This is a huge Safeway in an odd location near apartments and homes, there is a Starbucks on the inside too. The food is good on some occasions, and some important information is that they re-stock on Tuesdays, so on the weekends they don't have much there. The people are very helpful when you need to find stuff and the staff are sweet. read more

The store itself is just fine. My cashier (Keith) was a rude A-hole and should be fired. He hates his job. He hates people and I'm pretty sure he hates his life. I guess this is the only job he could get. Didn't even greet me and went downhill from there. Because the line was long, I turned all the bar codes toward the scanner for him. I told him I did it so he wouldn't have to turn each item over or around. (slow as hell like he did with the customers before me.) Did he say thanks? Nope! Smiling, I said: "No thanks or nothing?" Silence. I said:"I was a cashier years ago and I would have appreciated a customer doing that." He said: "I don't care." I said: "I was just being nice, trying to make your day." He totally ignored that. Very obvious that in a one on one situational job, he wants no customer interaction at all. Shoulder shugging, sighing. A whole ass "whatever attitude". I'm in town visiting and I told him: "I'm not used to your kind of negativity." He said: "I deal with negativity all day." I said: "So you think the answer is to create more negativity?" He just shrugged and said: "I don't care one way or the other." I didn't need to be fawned over. Just a simple hello or thanks would have sufficed. What a pitiful lowlife human being. It's difficult to know where to begin. Upon entering, the store had an unusual odor and was not particularly clean. One positive is that they offer a selection of wine. However, when I went to check out, the 375 ml bottle I selected didn't have a price tag, and the cashier attempted to charge me $16. When I questioned the price, I was met with visible annoyance and asked to return to the wine aisle myself to check--despite the fact that, as I had already noted, there was no price listed. A staff member from the wine section eventually told me it was likely $8, half the original amount. Unfortunately, the overall experience included poor customer service, a lack of professionalism, and a pricing issue that came across as questionable. I'm unlikely to return. read more

The Olney location has got to be the worst grocery store in Safeway's chain. The employees are rude, the aisles clogged with stocking carts, the directional signs for where to find staples are often wrong. It all adds up to how Albertsons manages their stores - Have the highest grocery prices in the U.S. and pay their employees substandard wages, resulting in high turnover and keeping only the most incompetent on board. I really like like going to this location because it's always stocked with different wines and beverages. Even in the food part its well stocked. And if you trying yo compare you food and a wine there is always someone to ask for help. I recently purchased a new wine by Misfit winery Coconut & lime it's so refreshing. This Safeway was renovated not too long ago and has outdoor parking in front and garage parking around back. You can walk to the butterfly garden with benches in the rear or Rita's ice cream behind it with the kids. This is one of the few grocery stores either beer and wine and they always have a special going and great selection. This is the cheapest I r seen my fave santa margarita Pinot Grigio - right now if you buy 6 it's $16 a bottle. It's 22 at the military shops. I went to my local Cloverly Safeway to ask about having a birthday cake made, they were so rude and not willing to help I decided to go to the Olney Safeway. I am SO happy I did. Everyone was wonderful. I tried to explain what I wanted for the design, but felt I didn't give a good description, so I went back the next day with a photo I found on the internet. They did a fantastic job!!! This is the best Safeway in the area, my Husband drives to Olney instead of going to the store 3 minutes from our house. I understand why. This is a very clean and large Safeway, which also has a vast beer and wine selection and a full-service Starbucks toward the left set of double doors. The parking lot is huge and so is the parking garage in the rear. Despite there being severs grocery stores in the area, including Giant, Harris Teeter, and (less comparable) Roots, this store is busy busy busy. I was in and out quickly, though, to pick up a pharmacy prescription. The pharmacy techs and pharmacists were all friendly, professional, and attentive. I felt encouraged to return to this location. Exiting the parking lot can be a bit cumbersome because of the major road it's on and off of! read more

Please train your cashier's to greet the customer. Yesterday (Friday, 5/25/2019, between 5 and 6), I went to the Express check out aisle. Lady didn't acknowledge me whatsoever. Didn't even look at me. Said "thanks" at the very end when handing me my receipt, I'll give her that. She didn't ask if I wanted bags, (I didn't- I was literally holding my store bought bags in my hand). So I had to remove the stuff she put it in the plastic bags and put them in my own. Now that I think about it, she probably charged me for those bags I obviously didn't need... Look, I don't even want a conversation. But as a customer, it's incredibly awkward to be standing there while a store employee doesn't acknowledge your existence. Maybe she doesn't realize- please tell her- IT'S RUDE. read more

I'm not a huge fan of Safeway but this store could change my mind. As soon as we entered I noticed how nice the floral section is and then a stand full of succulents caught my eye. They had some single plants and some with a nice arrangement of multiples. I don't need any more plants but couldn't resist one with a nice variety. We picked up some oranges and then headed to the beer/wine section. Rich had been told they carry beer from a local brewery that he likes. I was amazed at the number of different wine and beer choices. And the cheese section was awesome. A lot to choose from and some cheese selections packed to serve or to give as a hostess gift. We asked an employee where we would find the Brookville Beer Farm beer and he offered to show us. I was wearing a shirt with a baseball team's logo and he asked me if I was a fan. He and Rich immediately got into a discussion of baseball, their favorite teams and players. It was a nice, pleasant exchange. They didn't have the specific beer Rich was looking for but he managed to find a different "favorite" to buy. When we checked out the cashier asked if we had a bonus card. Since we don't usually shop there I said "no, but I'm going to apply for one next time we're here." She used her store card and saved us a nice amount of money. Nice! They're short staffed so the answers I have received and their customer service is less than marginal. Bought the high priced shrimp the other day. The $20/lb kind. Next evening I opened the package from the fish counter and the shrimp was bad. One day. Couldn't have been very fresh when I bought them. They smelled obviously bad - so I threw them out for garbage pick up the next morning. Went back yesterday to get credit - or new, hopefully fresh shrimp. Both receipt and shrimp were long gone - sorry - I don't collect pieces of paper and/or bad shrimp. Manager of the store was rude and offensive. No good will for long time customer, who BTW, signed in with phone # when I bought the shrimp. Why bother to have a system with customers if Safeway keeps no records. Another bad company/system with offensive personnel. I'll take my business elsewhere! read more

I had the best experience at the Olney Safeway today! Usually I shop closer to home at Giant in Colesville or Safeway in Cloverly--with generally less than positive experiences. At the Olney Safeway I had a lovely conversation with employee Joe about wines (he spent a long time with me making sure I got exactly what I want). I got my booster shot from the friendly and competent pharmacist, and met a chatty and efficient young cashier. I found shelves stocked. I purchased a lb of wild shrimp on May 8, 2023. I froze the shrimp as soon as I got home and had planned on making a shrimp/asparagus/pasta meal on Thursday. Thursday morning I took the shrimp our of the freezer and thawed it in the frig. When it came time for me to peel the shrimp, they were bad. they smelled so bad that I couldn't stand it. I wanted to drive up to Safeway to get my money back but my husband said no and to just not buy seafood there anymore. This isn't the first time we've had problems with their seafood. It's frozen, thawed, refrozen and thawed again. No more for me. read more

I wish I could give this store 5 stars considering the condition, variety, and friendliness (of most) staff, but the past two times I've come here I've had a cashier, named Tracey, who is extremely bitter and has me leaving the store in a bad mood. She speaks to me (and other costumers) like children/is very demanding with the way she speaks, will not offer to help bag your groceries if you brought your bags, and has probably the worst costumer service I've ever experienced. The first time I encountered her I just assumed that maybe she was in a bad mood, but today showed me that she's just a rude person. I transferred all of my prescriptions from CVS to Safeway because CVS stopped participating with the Blink Health Plan which saved me more money than having an AARP RX plan. The pharmacy is located at the rear of the store and is rather small however, the staff is very efficient and very polite. Almost two years after my review and upon reading other reviewer's complaints I am dumbfounded that Safeway has done NOTHING to fix their checkout problem. It is simply not staffed enough. What they have done in the meanwhile is add more self checkout stations. That's great as I don't mind doing my own check out but some people don't like to have to do it. Safeway has to realize the only reason they have so many people lined up in the self check line is because the line at the ONE staffed checkout is 3-4 people deep Not sure what is up here and am wondering if this is a systemic problem with this chain or just with this store. Maybe they are all going the way of gas stations and banks and the like making people pump their own gas and use an ATM. Yes, I am showing my age but there are enough seniors in Olney that prefer to have a person and not a monitor check them out. read more

For example, I went to Safeway this morning to grab a couple quick items and there was only ONE register open. 6 out of the 9 self-checkouts were out of commission. I was at the pharmacy today picking up a prescription. I have been to this pharmacy multiple times over the past year, and I had already been at least once for the specific medication I was picking up today. I had to use my old California ID card (which obviously had a California address on it), and the pharmacist said that she couldn't take an ID without my current address. As I said, I have been there multiple times before, always with this same ID, and once before for this same medication, and I had never had a problem picking it up. I had my empty prescription bottle from last month, which had my current address on it. When I showed it to the pharmacist, she said that I could have put any address on that...? I also had paperwork from my doctors office with me, with all my information on it, and she once again said "well you could have put any address on that as well". Um... what? She then went on to tell me that "when you move to Maryland, you have 30 days to update your address...." blah blah blah, "if you get pulled over this isn't acceptable" ... completely out of line, in my opinion. Long story short, she essentially told me to my face that she thought I came out here allll the way across the country from California, to use a fake address in order to pick up a prescription? It was a weird experience at a pharmacy I've been going to for MONTHS, all while my 7 month old baby was crying in her stroller next to me and a line was forming. It just did not make sense. She even asked to see mail to prove I lived here. Why would I have mail with me in the grocery store? It was so weird. read more

Safeway is an alright experience, but if I'm being honest....harris teeter is THE experience. Maybe a year ago I got hagendaz strawberry ice cream. The ice cream had such freezer burn that It wasn't even edible. But to go into the store and return it? That's a waste of my time. I forgot about this pint of ice cream. Until tonight. I was eating a pint of Baskin Robins gold medal ribbon flavor. And what do I taste? Frost. I don't know why I'm surprised. Every time I go to the ice cream isle at the Safeway in Olney, it's frostier than the North Pole. More frost in that freezer than Aaron carters hair in the 90s. Chase said it best: "The best Safeway I've ever been to in my lifetime". That's literally what I thought when I pulled up. First thing I saw was the underground parking garage! So crazy! Half the malls I've been to don't even have that accommodation, let alone a grocery store. This is the first Safeway I've seen with a "cafe" (for lack of a better term). You can order prepared food. Breakfasts, sandwiches, fries, etc. Salad bar, olive bar, and so much more. Beer & wine! And for great prices! The produce section was the largest produce section I've ever seen. It was bigger than my entire grocery store I think. I was here for like 2 minutes to grab something late at night, but still, I was super impressed. read more

The best Safeway I've ever been to in my lifetime. I've been going to Giant across the street for groceries since they were doing some major upgrades to the building, but WOW. Amazing job refreshing the store environment ! the place looks gorgeous from the outside and inside, and especially they separated a huge section of beer & wine right on the side not to mention a huge parking lot behind the building in case of snow or crazy windy days. It was useful for me to get my groceries to the trunk without how-many-miles-per-hour wind blowing at my face. Def. 5 stars. ! read more

Poorly stocked store with rude cashiers. Came in today (9/25/18) around 5 p.m. and checked out in the express lane. Cashier girl was very rude and had a poor attitude when asking my friend and me about needing bags. Have had better, friendlier service in the city. And prices and deals are way better at Harris Teeter. I usually come here since it easy to pick up wine along with my groceries and the cakes are of decent price and quality for whenever my family has a birthday. But the stuffy attitude of these young suburban girls completely disgusts me. read more

It used to be a great place to buy groceries. Seems like this area (which happens to be surrounded by a lot of Caucasians) is difficult for members of other races (myself included). I have encountered in a few occasions some of these Caucasians to be racist. My last encounter involved an Older Guy who yelled at me, insulted me and told me to leave the Store. I was so upset, I just left I could have fallen under his provocation. I am glad I did not, reported the incident to the Manger later, but nothing has been done. Called the Police, they are useless and did not respond. We do not appreciate racist people like these, we are going to have to fight back. Not taking this anymore. We are humans also, and we eat also. I was advised next time to report the incident the moment it takes place. God have mercy of idiots like these. The Store does not care, just want to make money. The store is clean but the check out area typically has a longer than anticipated wait time at the self check out(on weekends). It would be nice if they had a lane for 15 items or less. I tried their delivery service. I selected a 4 hour window between 3 and 7. It's 10:00. They never called to say they were running late. I called about the order at 8:30 and they said they would call me back. I don't know if they plan on leaving my groceries outside overnight or if they are t coming at all. Shameful. I was on my way to go shop here with my children (mind you are 4 and 7). I parked in the garage instead of the parking lot because there were no spaces. I see one of the employees walking into this blue nissan with the safeway name tag on it and at first I minded my business. When I was finished shopping, the car was still there and I saw smoke coming out of the car and it smelled just like marijuana. I didn't want my kids smelling it so I had to hurry back into my car but I saw the name tag which said either Victor or Vincent, something with a V. I didn't know safeway approved of this behavior. I had to struggle to give this Safeway two stars. The best feature is the covered parking, which is useful on rainy and snowy days. Unfortunately, their produce is expensive compared to other supermarkets and of only average quality. They are often out of stock of basic produce items, such as green beans. Also, some of the parking lot lights are chronically out so the parking lot is rather dark in some areas. I'd give this Safeway a higher rating if they would just hire some more cashiers. Often, they have just one full service line open and the self-checkout is stacked with a 10 minute line. I've spoken with the manager on duty about the shortage of cashiers several times. The response is always "we are short on cashiers". WELL THEN HIRE SOME MORE CASHIERS! read more

When I finally got through after holding, the pharmacist gave me a smart aleck answer about how they had so many callers they didn't have time to give flu shots. She just lost our business.
