I was looking for some fresh fruit and decided to give Roots Market a try. I found some pleasant surprises, when I went to explore. First, the fresh fruit section was small and the fruit was very expensive. So, I deducted a star. But, the store itself was pretty large. I did buy some strawberries and bananas. The surprises came in the ready to eat section. There was a ton of homemade soups, which looked delicious. I thought the prepared salads also looked really tasty. I ended up leaving with a Greek salad, which was fresh and delicious. Lots of feta cheese, lettuce, red peppers, olives and Greek dressing. Another, pleasant surprise was the bread section. There were a lot of freshly made breads. I bought a sourdough bread that was really good. It was hard to choose from the many different selections. The vegetable selections were plentiful and looked really nice. The service was excellent. I was checked out in a jiffy. My grocery helper was so nice and accommodating. The store was clean and well organized. I am sure the quality of food is higher, than a regular supermarket. I would probably return for the prepared foods and breads. But, the cost is pretty high. Of course I found a lot of natural, healthy finds. Their fresh desserts section was impressive. It was also nice to find that they have a hot food station. I'm a fan of Roots, as they have a nice selection of organic, all-natural, non-GMO, fair trade, and earth-friendly produce and items. For those who are vegetarians/vegans and/or has a GF sensitivity, you can find many options here, too! I like their ready-made sammies, such as the Curry 'Chicken' Salad wrap (a whole wheat wrap filled with organic baby spinach and grilled 'chicken' salad), the Garden Hummus Wrap (a spinach wrap willed with organic baby spinach, organic carrots, organic sprouts, organic red bell pepper, organic cucumber, and hummus), and, the Falafel Wrap (a spinach wrap filled with housemade falafel, organic cabbage, organic carrots, organic tomatoes, organic dill pickles, and tzatziki sauce). The wine/beer/cider/hard kombucha selection is pretty nice. The worst part of this organics/naturals grocer is the produce. I'm routinely shocked at how wilted and sad the veggies are. Tiny holistic grocery store that features a lot of goodies for folks looking to change their diet from meat-heavy to vegan. But the reason why I visited the store (and this is the reason why I go to organic shops) is for vitamins and skincare. I will say, they have a solid section for taking care of the body etc., but the vitamin section could be a bit better. Simply put -- it doesn't compare to Mom's Organic vitamin section. Had to update my review because I've come here quite regularly since we've been on shut-down since it's super close to home. They have really stepped up -sanitizing carts and passing out gloves best of all they N have a line to get in. Customer service had blown me away. One employee going above and beyond & they remember you from week to week. They also now have Ethiopian food from Bete restaurant in downtown Silver Spring which comes prepackaged- it's delicious, and vegan and perfect. Prices are still more than MOMs, but I'm getting some good deals now as a Roots member. I'm officially a fan. read more

Roots Market is a Vegan's paradise (I'm not Vegan or Vegetarian) but I enjoy Vegan options and eating clean....sometimes. I came here for a Vegan Festival last weekend and I enjoyed it very much! This grocery store reminded me of MOM's Organic x 10. They have more options, hot bar, bakery section, fresh finds, and fully stocked shelves of plant based goods. I tried the birthday cake vegan donut and I enjoyed every bite! I wish I could have tried the hot bar but I ordered food outside at the event. Roots is slightly more expensive than MOM's but health is wealth so it definitely pays to eat healthy. I hope they open a location closer to my area because Olney is a bit of a hike from me. No matter if I'm looking for cashew cheese, have questions re: shea butter, requesting a fresh batch of soft pretzels or more curry 'chix' salad; doesn't matter, they always willing to accommodate! Roots is my go to for specific items. I love that they carry things I can't necessarily find in other stores. I like all of the steps they take to make reduce their imprint. You can opt for your receipts to be emailed-which I love! One less receipt to fall into my purse and sentenced to live out the rest of their days there . The staff is very knowledgeable of the store and are always willing and able to assist you in any way. I like knowing that everything I purchase is wholesome and is something you feel good about feeding your family. I can't lie, I think some things are pretty pricey and with a family of four, (and two that are currently eating me out of house and home- seriously, where do they put it all?!!), I cannot do my entire weeks worth of shopping here, but I still come for some of my weekly haul. So far, my favorite go to is the laundry soaps, the make your own trail mixes (the variety of nuts, fruit, etc), dried berries and teas.(love, love, LOVE the tra section), and of course snacks for my two product testers. They are conveniently right off the ICC which is a plus. Check them out when you're in the area! read more

Roots, I've shopped at Whole Foods, Mom's and Yes Markets. I know Whole Foods, Mom's and Yes Markets. I am a fan of Whole Foods, Mom's and Yes Markets, and Roots, you're no Whole Foods, Mom's or Yes Markets. On the plus side, Roots supposedly has local wine and beer tasting on the weekends, but I came here at 6 PM on Saturday and I did not see anyone at the beer keg. There was a stand for sampling local coffee at the customer service counter, I noticed raw sugar and organic sugar but no cream. I asked one of the employees if anyone could provide some creamer, she tossed the question off to another employee who said no. This would never happen at Mom's Organic Market. I did see a clearance section, there was even beer on the rack, but it was only $4 off the regular price of $16.99, it would have been nice if it was 50% off or more. What gives my rating the 2 stars is bad customer service and perceived carelessness of the staff. I saw someone stocking the shelves with his pants hanging down, boxers showing!! Granted, it's stocking shelves, but can you at least be considerate of other customers when you're on the clock? Off the clock you can do what you want. read more

The Roots Market is a cool local chain of grocery stores that covets local, sustainable real foods. I love the selection, the commitment to quality and the local business aspects of this market. There are many great choices for your produce, home care, health care, pet care, and other needs. There's a good selection at the salad bar, some decent food at the hot food bar, and a fair number of options for liquor/ alcohol, coffee, juice, and other beverages. They have many bulk items, though many are pre-packaged in towers of plastic "eco-containers" that greet you as you walk into the store. They seem to line the walls quite well, as the fresh produce will definitely draw you in first. The asymmetrical layout makes it a more enjoyable, but perhaps more of a haphazard shopping experience. There is so much going on in this store, and the design will keep you wandering about for just a bit longer than you anticipated. The shelving units also feel much taller than other stores... maybe it's just me! They have some baked goods available, but the selection of these and most other items seems to me to be inferior to the one up in Clarksville (I definitely like that store better). There were a few cupcakes and a couple other representative baked goods - all of which for the in-house varieties seemed to be vegan, most of which seemed to be gluten free (chocolate chocolate cupcakes, cornbread, thumbprint cookies). They make many "salads' in the store with a good vegan and vegetarian selection using fake meats and fake mayonnaise - good for those who want to try out veg items more often. The staff here also seem less friendly. I have been here quite a few times when up in the Olney area, but only when I was behaving as they wouldn't appreciate me to behave did I receive any attention. It's a business, of course, so be sure not to talk too much about it or take pictures to share, because, apparently, they need to stay competitive, so pictures are not welcome. Sorry Yelpers- no pics for this market. I respect their proprietary interest. There were a bunch of staff members restocking and organizing the store, and they made me feel like I was in the way. Also, there were at least a half-dozen "sampling areas" of treats like fruit and snacks, but they were pretty much decimated - only crumbs remaining for the ravenous or starving folks. Even when I checked out, there were 3 clerks, but none of them seemed interested in helping me, but one reluctantly rang me up as he continued chatting with another cashier. I wonder if it is the management team here that causes the staff to appear so unfriendly? Who knows... but it is a markedly better experience at the store in Clarksville. All the same, if I am stuck up around here and need a fast snack, the food from their salad bar or pre-made refrigerated section will be an easy and healthful choice..... until I can go somewhere else better. read more

This is a wonderful, totally organic market, but it is way out of the way. As N S mentioned, it isn't a place you can stop by on your way to somewhere. It makes me want to be a healthier person. Only, I'm addicted to Reese's, but I am willing to cheat on them. They sell Divine and Theo's organic chocolate bars for $2.99. Hello Milk & Cookies flavor! Their micro brew beer selection is quite large. They also have a pretty large selection of gluten-free products. The workers are helpful and friendly. I've shopped at roots market often on but very occasionally since 2017 The roots market has a business model that is very similar to Whole Foods and "my organic market " but seems to do a better job of stocking small production unique food items that you would normally get in the other two organic markets A lot of the private books are very expensive because they are from high-quality low production producers As for the customer skills of a lot of their staff you're going to expect to be pretty low If they happen to hire one or two people with great personalities concierge skills and attention to customers feelings they're not gonna be able to hold out that person so probably find opportunities elsewhere The location of the roots market and the parking lot is very difficult because Georgia Avenue is the side of being a major highway I stop by roots this past Saturday and I got a certain kind of high quality vegetables and fruit that I seem to like and I couldn't find it elsewhere in other markets so I came back and drove a 45 minute drive to purchase them As far as the customer service is concerned I find fruits very cramped and the staff to be lackluster at answering questions read more

I've soured on Roots over the years, if only slightly. Still, there are plenty of natural and healthy and hard to find special things here, but it's getting harder and harder to find a good deal, and they've gone more and more towards pushing alcohol and cosmetics and prepared foods and not whole food ingredients, and the local MOM's have gotten more numerous and better by comparison. I'm still inclined to stop by when I'm in the area, but it's no longer a destination for me, which says both that there are good options for health food markets out there and that Roots has slipped a bit on price and selection from when I first started going there. read more

I love that they sell a good amount of prepared foods that are very clearly labeled and HEALTHY (fresh ingredients, simple recipes, etc.) The drawback is overall selection and like others have mentioned, the prices do seem higher than what I'd pay at similar stores. This is the best grocery store in Montgomery County when it comes to the latest and greatest vegan options and varieties. Their hot bar always includes vegan options. Their salad bar contains beyond meat chicken, their deli can actually make you a vegan sandwich or sub. They are totally stocked up on the latest vegan products and their produce section is super fresh. I know they can be costly but it pays off in the convenience of having so many vegan options including baked goods, health and beauty products, and even the soup bar will have vegan options. I sure wish they would open one in Frederick county. What a dream! read more

I'm a big fan of the Roots brand. I usually go to the Clarksville location because it's right around the corner from my office. But I've made it to this location a few times and both are great. The stores are consistent in selection and customer service. Roots carries a lot of great vegan cheese brands that are hard to find elsewhere. Additionally I love their prepared food buffet, in house made peanut butter, dried fruit and baked goods. The prices are on the higher end. But they have great deals and sales if you follow them on social media. Parking is easy. read more

Weekly Roots shopper, my family love Roots, they always have a very well thought out selection, and stock many quality items I can't find other places, it is definitely pricey, but when we shop here we are in and out quickly, because we don't quibble over a host of questionable ingredients. The staff are warm and quick to offer assistance, even taking my cellie to personally notify me when one of my staple Essential Oils that was sold out that day was back in stock! The whole bean coffee is very good, the beer n wine section is tastefully selected the hot bar has healthy soups and fresh variety of salad fixings, the personal hygiene isles are stocked with very high quality products. It's clear someone is very thoroughly researching which products are high quality and ensuring they stock them I only took off one star because the produce prices can be astronomical read more

You certainly get what you pay for at Roots Market. The prices are very high for the produce because all of the produce is organic. But the prices are justified! Haters will continue to hate. Roots strives for non-GMO produce and products whenever possible. Roots also strives for local, fair trade, and sustainable food products. All of these caring aspects require the customer to pay more; however, as opposed to the environment or the animals or the cocoa growers feeling the burden, the customers pay a little more so that we can ensure the highest quality and integrity of our food. In other words, we can pay a few more dollars so that we can have pesticide-free food. We can pay a few more dollars so that we know our chocolate cake is vegan-friendly and that our dark chocolate was made in a fair-trade environment where no human rights violations have occurred. We can pay a few more dollars to offset the effects of climate change. Overall, Roots Market is a gift from the vegan gods. They don't even sell real chicken salad; they only sell vegan chicken salad. No one here wants to buy any meat because most of us are vegan or vegetarian. Get that chicken out of here! Roots Market is a gift from the environmentally-conscious gods. Tofu abounds. Quinoa is sold here in a variety of colors. Roots offers a variety of free samples. They even have free guacamole to try! I helped myself to 3-4 teaspoons of guacamole with tortilla chips. The vegan and gluten-free baked goods are to die for. They also have a huge selection of dark chocolates. They also sell all varieties of Amy's Pizza and Soy Delicious coconut ice cream. The organic gala apples are out of this world delicious. They cost $3.50 a pound, but they taste way better than the gala apples at Trader Joe's and Wegmans. I have been to both the Clarksville and Olney locations. Both are fantastic. This place reminds you of a grocery store that is a cross-hybrid of a Whole Foods and a Trader Joe's. In a small amount of space, they are able to pack just about all the major organic branded items that Whole Foods sells. That being said, this place is atrociously expensive (a good ~30% more expensive than Whole Foods) and it is unfathomable to think that there are many customers from this area of MD who have pockets deep enough to keep this business afloat. Surprisingly, this store carries beer and wine (a surprise since only 1 store from each chain is able to carry wine and beer in MoCo) and stocks a variety of nice beer (all major dogfish beers, Heavy Seas (Md microbrewery beer), Hefweizen UFO, and a variety of others. Nevetheless, I cannot recommend anyone shopping here for groceries and it saddens me to say that people should be going to Whole Foods b/c it's a lot cheaper. read more

Recently went to The Roots to buy some craft beers/ciders. While they do have a great selection, it's just a total rip off. I found the same exact beer I had purchased at Total Wine & More (about 20min away, but well worth the trip) for more than HALF the price difference. I paid $6.99 for one 16oz bottle of Crabbies ginger beer at The Roots, in comparison to the $9.99 I paid at Total Wine & More for a 4pack of 12oz beers. That's 48oz for $9.99 compared to 16oz for $6.99 at The Roots. That's a ridiculous price increase. Will never buy beer/wine their again. Selection is great but if you're anything like me, you wouldn't want to pay more, much more, for less. read more

Good local and organic beer and wine selection. It is good to see a place that is selling organic beer in MoCo. Great vegan selection in all departments: check. All of their baked goods are vegan, and let me tell you - they are MIND BLOWINGLY delicious. I just had their Elvis Peanut Butter Banana cupcake today, and it is by far their very BEST cupcake yet. My all-time Pistachio cupcake will have to wait. I love that they have beyond meat options in their hot bar most of the time, but in their salad bar all of the time. The veggies and fruits are always fresh, and their pre-packaged vegan burritos and salads are so amazing and convenient! I wish the vegan mexican burritos weren't 8 bucks but hey I'm grateful they carry them and at least I can indulge once in a while on them. I drive by Roots on my way to a business I own in Olney. I live in DC and have great options for grocery shopping, but I always make a point to support Roots. There is a wide selection of local organic produce. The produce team members are also extremely helpful. I needed a pie pumpkin and could not find one in DC. I called Roots and they set 3 pie pumpkins aside for me so I could choose the best one. They even gave me advice on which would be best for my specific recipe. The salad bar is a great fast food option. It is set off to the side, so some people miss it. It's clean and fresh and reasonably priced for the quality. One gem in this store is their discounted rack. I think a lot of people miss this rack or don't take advantage of it. I almost always find something to buy that is sold at a steep discount. Sometimes Roots buys items that they discontinue due to lack of consumer interest. I found a really affordable jar of coconut almond butter on the discount rack. The discount section is located in the back of the store before the meat section. I also really enjoy the raw food section. It is a small end cap with only raw food items. If you are in a hurry, they have a lot of prepared foods in the refrigerated section. Again, no reason to eat unhealthy fast food when Roots has so many grab-and-go options. They have indoor and outdoor seating, utensils, etc. I am a licensed health coach and offer grocery store tours for my clients. I only do my tours at Roots. Roots makes it very difficult to make an unhealthy buying decision. read more

I find interesting organic items to purchase here on occasion, including the delicious breads. But the cheese shop is top notch. Shop manager Lelia's recommendations have always hit the mark. Roots is great to have in Olney -- & the selection for the most part is pretty sweet. If you're looking for snacks -- this is the place. Great selection of chips, nuts, crackers, cheeses, chocolates and other munchables. The produce selection is decent - lots of local choices. The meats, however, leave a lot to be desired. If you're a carnivore, like me, you may find yourself crying in the aisle. Too bad they don't offer a better selection -- though I have to say it has improved a bit since they opened a few years back. The spice section, however, is paltry and unimaginative. -- Not what one expects when they shop at a "whole foods" type of store. My main gripe about Roots is that more than once I've had to check the expiration dates to realize that I've purchased an outdated dairy product. It's unfortunate that they will let stuff sit on the shelves for too long. It's turned me off a bit to shopping there regularly -- I'll usually just go to Harris Teeter or Giant for yogurts & dairy just because I've been let down at Roots before. Moo. The cows might be happy, but this cowgirl isn't. All said, though, Roots is an ambitious, lovely store with its heart in the right place.
