I adore this place! A local gem I've been shopping there since childhood. They have the best eggs, milk and fresh local produce. Even wine and beer! Today we went looking for a Christmas tree. We have been taking, and will continue to do so, the social limiting and wearing of masks. Normally we got to large grocery stores at least once a week but are limiting are shopping to smaller venues. Country Boy has become a go to for most of our perishables. They also adapted their store to accommodate the early need of their customers during a period of shortage of some essential item. They added toilet paper, paper towels, distilled water, and spring water to their inventory. They of course require mask, have a sanitary station for wiping carts, and new procedures for checking out, including wiping the belt between customers. As usual they carried spring flowers, hanging baskets and vegetables so that I could plant my garden without going to a big warehouse-type hardware/garden center. Everything I bought is flourishing, except my sunflowers. But I think that was my fault and they didn't get enough sun. I'm even harvesting tomatoes this year and I'm usually not very successful with that. Their fruits and vegetables are always fresh and delicious. I've even been buying some groceries there like salsa, mayo, sour cream, and eggs. They have a nice variety of unique cheeses in the refrigerator case. They've even consistently had flour in stock which I've noticed a lot of people were searching for in March and April. I have found that if we go early in the day they usually not too crowded and shopping and check-out are a breeze. read more

I'm this mentally and emotionally draining time with the coronavirus I bought my mom a dozen bright pink tulips to brighten her day! They were priced at $7.99 but should have been free: when my mom took them out of the packaging, the insides weee rotten and the leaves were wilted! She placed them in a vase: only one stood up like fresh tulips do! They were a waste of money! No flower "food" was included like the other bunches of flowers. All in all, DO NOT BUY FLOWERS HERE! Nope. Never again. I've been a Country Boy customer for over 40 years, from long before they moved to Glenmont, but after this latest interaction, I will never support their small business again. In the past I buy - and have delivered - a substantial amount of mulch from Country Boy. This season I purchased 125 bags of mulch. My gardener saved the empty packaging so I could double check what I'd received. 116 bags of mulch were delivered. Despite the rude discourse with the owner (who uses racist language, btw), he refused to budge on his delivery county. After all, he said he loaded the bags himself. I seriously doubt that since the bags were waterlogged and must weigh over 50 lbs each. The bottom line: the owner is dishonest, nasty and the mulch quality isn't all that great. I would dispute this charge through my credit card company, but the owner is psycho and don't want to worry about him doing something to me or my house. Although I like to support small businesses, I will be buying my mulch from someone else in the future. read more

They were my second family. My parents knew Mr. B parents when they were in Wheaton when they had a meat market I remember as a child going there. What a warm loving giving family they were. I worked there for many years they treated me as family. A year ago Mr.B in December passed away that broke my heart. Both of us would stay in touch I was going threw breast cancer and he had fell and falling sick we both would cheer each other up and send support to each other. He was my second Dad treated me like one of his what a fabulous loving family I'm lucky to have been included working with them all. I usually don't drive this far up Georgia Ave. H Mart is about as far as I get. So, when my friend spied this place, she wanted to stop in. We thought it was some kind of a lumber/ garden store. I do believe it was a Hechinger's in a former life, but has it really been 20 years? (El D. says he/she has been coming here for that long.) As we parked we noticed mostly men carrying out cases of beer. OK, so it's a lumber/garden/beer and wine store. Nope. It's much more. They are a small grocery /local produce store too. And their prices are cheap! Not just for the produce, but the beer and wine too. The two bags of mulch my pal bought were $2 cheaper than that big box chain store... the one with the orange sign. Locally grown squash was $0.99/lb. That's cheaper than the local farmers' markets. Now, it's not the prettiest place, or the brightest place, but the employees are friendly, and will load mulch into your trunk for you. read more

I came back to get mulch for my front yard. All of their mulch is local and reasonably priced. At the entrance there are samples to look and touch. A very friendly employee came to help me figure out which mulch word work best for my goal. I left with four bags of mulch and two soil conditioner bags for about 4$ each.. I don't remember how many pounds but it was about the same size as the stuff from Home Depot. He loaded the bags, brought them to the car and loaded them into the car for us. I plan on only coming here for mulch- buy from local farms rather than the multi billion dollar Scott company that makes crappy products. Produce is good. Prices are fair. Beer is on and off in price. Milk is priced low!! More reason for me visit country boy. read more

Had a really great experience getting bags of mulch delivered. The truck couldn't back right up to my property (I live in a townhouse), so the nice young man carried all 17 bags the extra 100 feet to my front yard. Plus they were able to deliver it the day after I called (a lot sooner than the few other places I was considering). Beware: do NOT buy wood from this store. We bought a cord of "seasoned" wood and had it delivered. The wood is either not seasoned properly or it's just wet, because after multiple attempts it does not burn. Stay away from this store. First time I went, ho-hum, wasn't impressed with much and walked out. I'm new to the area and gave it a second chance. This time as I was going in I heard the (white) owner screaming and swearing at an elderly black gentleman who had parked his car in "the wrong place" while his wife was shopping. I intervened gently but firmly 'cause I don't put up with this kind of mistreatment, then the owner's brother came over and they called the police on me and the old man just for standing in their parking lot -- while the elderly man was waiting for his wife, what was he going to do, leave her there? Grocery wise it can be a bit sparse, but the offerings for beer and party incidentals are solid. What I am most interested in reviewing them for are their plants and herbs. and I waited this long on purpose, so I could see how they performed. We bought a number of plants here for our potted garden. Cucumber, roma tomato, patio tomato, salsa pepper, and a variety of herbs (Basil, dill, thyme, and cilantro). We also bought an okra plant. All of them performed well. The herbs are still growing like mad. We had an explosion of excellent cucumbers, though a vacation where our waterer failed us has led to the demise of that plant :( The Patio tomato's sucked, but I chalk that up to that type of tomato. The plant itself performed wonderfully, as did the Roma plant, and the Romas have been great. The pepper plant was fantastic, and the "salsa" peppers (aka random ass long green-to-red peppers) have proven very versatile (pickled, pepper vinegar, in salads, bbq sauces...). We plan on hitting country boy up again next spring when we're planting more veggies for our little pot garden. It's really nice to be able to grab some cilantro right off the porch. read more

This place is a bit unknown to many but it has great customer service and has some great looking produce (although I haven't tried any yet). My company was in a tight spot when the entire region ran short on deicing products this winter. All of my "go-to" suppliers were of no help and after driving 1 hour west to Frederick and 1 hour south to Manassas to get small amounts of product from other companies I found Country Boy. They held my orders in their warehouse for a couple weeks (even when other customers were trying to buy it) and kept me informed of when the new orders of salt and products were being delivered next. They would call when the products arrived and to check when I would be picking them up because they already had them waiting outside for my crew to pickup. Although, I can get cheaper prices with my previous vendors I will always use these guys when I have to or if my current vendors let me down again I would consider switching altogether. I don't think Ron S. comments should even be allowed up on this site since 1) He was not involved in the incident and admits to walking in after the incident was already in progress 2) Brings racial epithets into the story which only shows he is the biased one and 3) says "this place isn't called country boy for nothing" which implies other nonrelated personal vendettas and is more keen on tarnishing this company's name than writing a legit and coherent review. read more

Love this family run country style store. My family has been buying all our flower and vegetable plants, eggs, milk, fruit, honey and vegetables at Country Boy for decades!. Large, fresh selection at prices usually lower than the big box stores. A lot of local farms provide their selection. Forget Home Depot, Giant Food, Shoppers Food, etc.. We really like how they keep up with the seasons. They even sell local beer! Great mannered owners and employees! P.S. Fresh produce & great prices, always. Family owned, which I love and staff that remembers me with each visit. In the fall, the grapefruit is the best in the area. I always go there for various lettuces, apples, mushrooms, herbs, plantains, and eggs. Also seasonally, you can get herbs and start your veggie garden, and around Christmas time get your Christmas tree and garland -- lots of options. We thought we found an undiscovered gem, but this place is a mess. Tried to buy lawn supplies here. Cashier messed up initial transaction several times. Days later when we needed to make a return, instead of putting money back on card we were charged a second time. Upon pointed out error, owner was rude, would not acknowledge mistake and cursed out my husband. I love this place. Small, but with a really cool vibe. I like the large beer and wine selection and the veggies are fresh. They have mulch in the spring and de-icer in the winter time. Think of this place as a cross between a road-side vegetable stand and a very eclectic grocery store you would find in the middle of nowhere and you will be in the right frame of mind to shop here. I have never been treated rudely by anyone at any time I have stopped by here. I have shopped on weekends, weekdays, Sunday afternoons, 5 minutes before closing time and more. Was in the other day, as I am a common shopper there and took my reusable bags. Bought some apples and beer. Was offered help to carry it to the car, as no other grocery store would do. And yes...my bags were accepted. I go in after work and this place is always clean and neat and I wouldn't dream of shopping anywhere else. I used to come here when I lived near Glenmont metro for a bit. Looks like your basic, run of the mill store with nothing at all fancy. Maybe that is why the prices tend to be pretty decent and even better, the quality is superior to Shoppers near by. Our family has been going to Country Boy for decades. We remember when they were in downtown Wheaton. It's a family run store. We love the freshness of their produce and that they try to stock from local farms. The apple selection in great. I especially love the Stamen Apples that come in harvest mid October. Looking for veggie seedlings to plant in your garden AND a cool craft beer selection? Then look no further as Country Boy Market will be your one stop shop. I've passed by this place many a time but since it isn't directly on the way to H Mart or Brookside Gardens I haven't made the stop in, that is until today. I was planning to stop by a hardware/garden supply store to pick up some vegetable and herb seedlings for this growing season and was in the neighborhood so finally made the stop in. And boy was I happy. They had a great selection of seedlings, especially tomatoes, at good prices and in good health. Much cheaper than your average big box hardware store for sure. Step inside to pay and what do you know, it's a market with a surprising craft beer area. Killed two birds with one stone as I had to get a quality IPA for a cookout later that day. Will definitely be back if I pass by the area. Make sure you do the same if you need to kill two birds with one stone like me. read more
