Shopping in a supermarket while on vacation seemed to be a faux pas, but as a local who travels often enough, it's quite necessary to do these shopping trips to stay on point with the budget!
That's the case in point when I stopped at the Safeway here adjacent to the Lahaina Cannery Mall in West Maui after knocking off another one on a recent hot Sunday in January 2016. I remember shopping here before this last visit, so I'll file a review here. On this visit, I was looking for ice cream as a required reward for a nice treat after what I had done in the morning. Ice cream and good quality wine, which was a perfect combination to a nice Sunday: marathon + ice cream + wine. Ain't nothing better than that! Besides, ice cream is very much more of value when you buy in larger containers versus a single or double scoop at a ice cream parlor for the same price range. Safeway is your national supermarket chain, which has a bunch of locations in Hawaii. A few on Maui alone. The prices are fair here and you may find a bargain or two, if you hunt good enough! The experience here is good, as always.
Safeway has always prided itself on giving the customers a good deal on anything and everything they sell. Good quality products at an affordable and competitive pricing helps make Safeway a reliable brand for any local and visitor alike. It's a trusted brand that everyone loves and it basically has everything a supermarket has - and more. Like a Walmart, but with better variety, but not like expensive Whole Foods. Somewhere in the middle to cater to working families to the communities it serves. They accept the major credit cards, as always, as well as cash. They have a rewards program too, but I rarely shop at Safeway anyway. The supermarket itself is meticulously organized and very clean.
This Safeway is in a good location for locals who live in the Lahaina area and for visitors who don't want to drive to and from Wailuku or Kahului area for things they need but don't want to spend the time driving. The service at check out was as typical as you can make it out to be. They say hi and ask you how you are doing, which is nice. While it is a good reason to fine here to stock up on liquor and other groceries, there are many other foods and culinary options within the store to be your own celebrity chef for a meal or two. Parking here is limited due to it being the Lahaina Cannery Mall and all its stores, but the lot is big enough to accommodate everyone, but just make sure that you come during non peak times to ensure a space.
The last few times I came here to shop, I had to come after 7:30pm on a Sunday night and this place was already quite full up. Enjoy the supermarket here in the heart of Lahaina, or else you'll have to find it elsewhere in Kihei or Kahului / Wailuku.
