My go to store on Pine St. I've been a Safeway shopper since my parents shopped at our hometown Safeway. This location has a transient population that has been moved back from the entry doors. I appreciate that, and carts are always available. I like the savings I get with the club card, and I get all my gas at this Safeway fuel station. I get help bagging my groceries and often I am helped out to my car and groceries are loaded for me. What a blessing for a 76 year old woman who moved here to be helped by her family, but whose family discontinued all help. The Safeway clerk's take the role of family for me. I appreciate that more than they know. I can find better prices elsewhere, but my loyalty is with Safeway. I have used grocery pickup and highly recommend that service. I've lived here for a year. Until I've gotten familiar with Redding, I have shopped here. I'm sorry to say this is a terrible store. The food is often expired. Staple products like broth and cheese, flour, things you don't expect to be outdated by months. Fruit and veggies go bad quickly. While I like the employees for the most part, I've decided to start shopping elsewhere. This store often has 1 check out open. With three or more 15 or less items open. They want you to go through self check out. If I was getting food at a decent price this would be ok. However, Safeway is not a discount store. This Safeway is guaranteed to be a hit and miss. It's a clean store, and it's open 24/7, which is nice if you need something overnight. It has a massive parking lot, and sometimes you will even see their security vehicle out there. Unfortunately, like the rest of this town, there's a lot of less-than-classy folk that hang around this location. I've been harassed a number of times outside this store by vagrants. Oftentimes I've bought (boxed) product to get home and find it was bad when opened. The staff varies between friendly and helpful, and rude and terrible. Prices aren't terrible, but having a club card is definitely a must. Overall, it's not the worst store, but I wouldn't recommend it. read more

Excellent produce section! Good sales! And the butcher will gladly serve single helping of your favorite meat to singles like myself. Then there's always the bonus of the gas discount. The prices are a little high but the clientele are of high caliber as well. You don't have to worry about being accosted in the parking lot as much as other stores nor catching a disease from the pavement. I almost hesitate to write this review. As a family, we've been eating Safeway's roasted chickens for years and consider them to be among the best available. However. On Saturday, July 5th 2014, my father bought one that never should have made it past any inspection. Maybe he didn't really look at it before he put it in the cart but the poor thing was desiccated, still had it's neck and, horror of horrors, there was a "spare" bone under it. Needless to say I returned it the next day and exchanged it for an edible one. Why the three star review then? This is actually pretty nice store if you don't mind how expensive it is but what is annoying is that it's not actually open 24 hours a day. It is open for 21 hours a day and they are closed from 2 a.m. until 5 a.m. They should advertise that they are open late not that they are open 24 hours a day. It seems like they keep changing the familiar locations that were perfect before the made alcohol, (I understand it's a higher mark up), smack dab in the middle front of the store. Try & find sand which bags, (I finally did), but why bury them so far away from everything. Sushi bar person is great but their (take a number), to get something made is summarily ignored quite often. PS, if you fill your bag & put on counter, I've been told to not: Please remove contents sir as I'm unable to lift? (Or take out 1 item at a time)? This Safeway is clean and you can usually easily find what you need. Great floral and produce section!! The staff however.. Wow. I've been here too many times to count and 8 out of 10 times rude and hateful staff. It's fine if you are just in and out, but the customer service desk has the WORST staff. Never a fun experience. When you post a sign saying "Please see customer service if you need assistance" please understand that people are going to come to you. It's not ok for you to be hateful about it when they do... This is one of my most favorite stores to shop at for groceries- here, Trade Joes and Holiday. The store is clean, well organized with kind and helpful employees. The floral Dept is incredible and I have spent a great deal over the last several years buying flowers and floral arrangements for friends, family and colleagues there. I appreciate this store and have been shopping at Safeway since I was a young child with my parents. I enjoy drinking quality wines in a lower price tear because I feel that there is something special about the wine being the compliment to the meal or the dinner table and not so much the wine always being the main center piece. Then again, I dont know jack sh*t about wines and I couldnt tell you the difference between a 1999 Rombauer merlot vs. a bottle of "two buck chuck". Oh, what to say, what to say? This is one of two Safeway locations in this town and this is by far my preferred location. However, the past few times I have been here they have been consistently out of their advertised sales items WHAT??? We all know they put that crap on sale so you will come in and buy other stuff you need and at a much higher cost than you can get it from other stores in the area. which of course I do. Let's face it, Safeway is not cheap by any means and I'm not one to chase a bargain, who has time for that? Regardless, here's my take on this location lately, sometimes they have no shopping carts available to pick up outside the store or only a few which are filled with trash (left behind sales ads, etc), do not have advertised sales item in stock or have not restocked them, pretty much no staff on the floor either to ask if they have more in the back (I'll be honest, I'm probably not one to ask either but it just plain pisses me off), only a few registers open and slow ass checkers. read more

Since I moved back to Redding from Dunsmuir in Febuary (no I didn't get kicked out of Dunsmuir) I've been shopping at Safeway. A few time a week I'll go to the sandwich deli and get the $2.49 breakfast with fresh OJ for .99cents. That, along with a coffee from the Starbucks inside the store, I'm good to go until dinner time. With the club card the prices are comparable to Winco's without having to shop in their zoo-like atmosphere. However, I put some of their clerks through some real nonsense and I'm so happy that they didn't kill me. The first incident was when I tried to check out some booze with the self-help checkout machines. It never crossed my mind about not being able to buy liquor. The lady ripped the booze out of my arms, reversed the transaction, and made me wait in line to check out. I could tell she was pissed off but she held her temper and Safeway didn't lose their liquor license. Then, on another day, I went to the self help machine again, and proceeded to screw up the transaction: not once, but three times. The clerk was very nice and patient and helped me through it. As I approached her to thank her for her help, a bottle of Synergy kombucha that I had packed fell out of the cart and exploded onto the floor. She just laughed it off and gave me another one. By this time, I didn't want to hurt anyone, so I got out of the store as fast as I could. I'm not good with mechanics; like, walking and chewing gum at the same time, so I had to be careful and this evening was no exception. I'm finding that will their Club card, the prices are comparable to Winco. I like Winco but this Safeway Store is closer. They have a nice prepared foods section and I find it a very pleasant place to shop. If only I don't break anything when I go into the store. If you acquire enough point, you can save .10 per gallon which usually comes out to about a nickel cheaper than Arco. So, now I'm going out to Safeway to pick up some eggs; this should be interesting. read more

Ok store but I feel like the cashiers are constantly sick. It has happened several times where the cashier or bagger has a cold & is coughing. That's great because they're touching every little thing you're bringing home. Also, my husband saw paramedics helping a guy who had overdosed in parking lot. Obviously not Safeway's fault, but that gives you an idea of the area....or of the entire town. read more

This review is on the GAS STATION attached to the store, but could potentially be relevant to both. Stopped by this gas station around 11pm a couple nights ago with our RV since the gas was a good price & we have Safeway gas points saved up. This reduced our per gallon price to $1.99 (this includes cash/debit price & Safeway points worth $1.00 off). Hence 2 stars, as opposed to 1. We were both exhausted & ready to call it a night. So I decided that while my husband filled-up it would be a good idea to get our four-legged child pottied. I saw a grassy patch off to the side that looked perfect. Unfortunately, the whole time I never noticed the infestation of cockroaches crawling everywhere until I happened to look down. Let's just say, I might have become slightly emotional after asking my husband why there were so many crickets at the gas station and hearing his response, "Baby, those aren't crickets." I'm going to need a moment of silence........ This was a big gas station platform, built to accommodate trucks & RVs, there were at least 100 roaches. No exaggeration. The Safeway Grocery store is located just across the parking lot. I hate to think about what might be found there. read more

Management needs to instruct their employees to check IDs for ALL credit card purchases! My credit card was stolen out of my car in the middle of the night and this person was able to run over $300 on my card at 4am and the employee did not ask for ID. Some young tweaker using a hot pink metallic credit card doesn't make you think maybe the card wasn't his or could be stolen. The employee had the only opportunity to prevent fraud and did not do so. I will not support a business who does not value its customers privacy. What is the point in writing see ID on the back of your card if the employees aren't even going to do their job. The employee said "oh because it was over 200 I should have checked ID and the manager said no you should have checked ID because it was credit". Absolutely infuriating and adds insult to injury. read more

Pretty much this Safeway is as good as Safeways get. Other than Costco, I'd do the majority of my shopping here. Great place to get prescriptions filled, there's a lovely young brunette pharmacist who's always happy to help and always amazes me how much they know about drugs - it's also comforting to know they have your best interests at heart! Got some of my immunizations there from the aforementioned pharmacist and they were about as pleasant as those can be! TIP: buy the brownies from the bakery if they have the walnuts in them, those with the chocolate chips aren't nearly as good! read more

This store has a major customer service problem, especially late at night. I understand the night shift is busy re-stocking and customers might be an inconvenience, but if the store is open 24/7, customer service should be the same 24/7. My latest issue has to do with the cashier whining about breaking my $100 dollar bill on a $12 purchase. She mumbled "just what I needed" as she took the bill. Very rude. I have been a Safeway member for over a decade, and have been very happy shopping there until recently. I write checks every week, and regularly spend over a thousand $$ a month. In all the years of shopping at Safeway, I have NEVER bounced a check, and rarely if ever write a check for an amount over my purchase. However, I last week, I was not permitted to get $25 back, and two weeks prior, I had to spend 20 minutes with a manager in order to write a check at all. Those of us in the know stop by California establishments and pick up fairly priced "Hootch", before going North over the border. Especially the rare and exotic ones that aren't even attainable at our Oregon Stores. The price gets even HIGHER for "Special Order" drink items. SO, I stop HERE, in Redding, Fuel up at the Safeway Gas Station (no such facility @ the Redding Costco), and check out the booze prices at both Safeway and the Payless drug next door before heading for Costco and Trader Joe's (both north up "Churn Creek Rd." and well worth the stops).... Don't miss the LAST "In 'n Out Burger" in Cali across from Costco either (Trader Joe's is further North on Hilltop Dr., so don't get on the Freeway YET!!).. Now Pilgrim, you will be sufficiently equipped for ANY type of event that may come your way. Don't forget to call your fave neighbor and ask if He/She needs a bottle of Galliano's, (et al) or another difficult to find Libation... You'll be MUCH appreciated and moreso, regularly "Invited", in your local surroundings... OH, cheap wine by the case here too.... Now, when you get home, you can render yourself sedated, Libated, or sufficiently "Buzzed"... Always remember to NOT "Drink & Drive", and don't be obnoxious.... Especially to your spouse and kids... Today I went to go buy some ice cream from this Safeway and had an unfortunate interaction with the lady checker in the independent checkout line. She said out loud that she "doesn't like pitbulls because they are vicious." Um, excuse me, but I am the proud owner of a very sweet pitty, so it obviously offended me. All dogs act according to how they are raised by their owners. She needs to get some customer service education, or literally any education at all, before she speaks her mind in public and at work. I'm not easily offended, but her ignorant and completely unwarranted opinion was really unnecessary. Needless to say, I will be taking my business elsewhere. Winco and Target employees are much better behaved and way more polite. read more

So I'm giving this location a 5star based off of customer service given. The produces are also super awesome. Which brings me to my point. I am on a road trip and wanted some grapes but they looked super dirty. I asked the lady at the floral department if she could just rinse them off for me. A grocery store is a grocery store... right? I mean they basically have the same food and you like them for the intangilbles... the service, the store layout, maybe a brand of yogurt they have that others store don't. This store is incredibly unique in one distinct way... it's customers. Welcome to Psycho Safeway. A couple things about this place. Their theft protection is amazing. Let me illustrate. I was shopping here with a friend, we grabbed a cart. As we were shopping we realized they didn't have a few things we were looking for and so rather than go thru the checkout with this huge empty cart we grabbed a hand basket for the handfull of purchases and I went to return the cart outside the store... as I went thru the doors an alarm sounded and one of the wheels on my cart locked, as if I had run over a pebble or something that jammed up one of the wheels. I manhandled the cart out of the store and noticed several clerks running in my direction...I turned around to see who was behind me... no one was and as they approached they asked me tersely if they could help me with something! Come to find out... people load up carts and take the unpaid groceries out to their car all the time here... so they created a way to lock up carts that have entered the store but have not been through the checkout lines! One time as I was pulling in a man came running out of the store with two policemen chasing him... he got into a car... they grabbed him and tried to pull him out... he was able to break free and speed off with the cops in close pursuit. I looked around sure that we were part of some bad TV show... nope. Just another day at Psycho Safeway. The unique individuals and their sense of style that shop here are truly entertaining. I have yet to be disappointed. I am not critical of their choices, but immensely entertained by both their clothing or lack there of and it's effect on the nice shoppers who look perplexed and scared that they are in a hidden camera reality show of some sort. groceries are groceries... this place is free entertainment. read more

Went in just to get gas, left with an attitude, and half a tank. Some one in charge needs to put the cashier at the fuel station in check before someone who's a little less nice than me, does. I greeted him "good morning" and get a mumble in response, but whatever, it's 8AM. So I proceed to give him my money and tell him "$20 on 1 please" and he goes "$20?" So I reply "yes sir". Then he mumbles "Safeway card" and I couldn't hear him at first so I asked him to repeat, and he throws an attitude at me and goes "dO yOu haVe a SaFeWAy caRd". Gave him my damn safe way card and then again, he throws the same over enunciated smart ass condescending tone and asks if I want a receipt. I said no and walked out. He's lucky I didn't give the shit he gave me, back. After this shit I almost wish I didn't even give him the time of day to be courteous. I literally don't even do reviews and stuff like this. I went out of my way to sign up on yelp just to do this. That's how you know how shitty that experience was. And to the lovely and wonderful cashier this post is about. Safeway, Vons.. Same thing. Clean atmosphere, organized and great selection. However, this place is expensive as hell. Expect to pay 3x more for your groceries. Filled with soccer moms and bratty kids. The staff is rude as can be. Honestly, its not worth it. I tried shopping here to get away from the crazies at winco and walmart but I can't go broke over groceries. The only time I would shop here is if your using wic or for gas. This Safeway is my absolute favorite. I have been a loyal customer as long as I can remember. I particularly Love the pharmacy staff and actually moved from the Pine street location because of Ed, Wanda, and Angie. They have always been very helpful in when my insurance is not at all helpful. Wanda has many times gone out of her way to resolve problems that have come up every once in a while. She is ALWAYS nice and has a very upbeat attitude and always smiles when I say hello. Basically the staff in the Pharmacy is the reason I drive across town to shop. Just wanted to let them all know they are great to shop with. I have a quick comment on those that have complained about bad customer service in grocery or checkout. I cannot recall an unfriendly person ever, it's been quite the opposite as all employees always seek to help. Great Job!!! read more
