Update on my attempt to get a good Nathan's hot dog. Safeway still hasn't figured out how to not serve burnt hot dogs. They put the hot dogs in a pan directly on the hot metal warmer surface which still burns the bun after a while. Safeway needs to invert the pan so the hot dog doesn't sit on direct heat. I bought two for lunch hoping that buying them mid-day the bun would not be overheated. The bun was burnt but still eatable. I will try again earlier and hope Safeway figures out how to keep the hot dogs warm without burning the bun and/or hot dog. I still like the other heated food. I saw a burger that looked good and hope to try one next time they make some. read more

Gayle and I were in the Bay Area last weekend to facilitate a grandchildren reunion of sorts. We stayed the night at a daughter-in-law's house and enjoyed a wonderful Peruvian meal and some nice family time. However, this household doesn't drink coffee, even though the did stock a small Mr. Coffee and filters. Luckily, the nearest Safeway is a short walk away. We purchased a brick of Peets and I was pleasantly surprised that my Safeway Club Card number (tied to my old Albany land line) was still valid. That took a ridiculously price and lowered it to a only slightly expensive one. But we take our breaks where we find them, especially when it comes to our traditional wake up drink. read more

Bobby, a manager apparently, handled a system failure with extremely poor customer service. After wasting an hour shopping, I went to checkout with Apple Pay. The register froze after I tapped my card. I was told my Chase card "jammed the system" and that it was stuck in an endless loop. We stood there, staring at each other with no solutions until eventually the lady a different register said she can switch it to hers. Same issue there. First employee said, "I hate Chase cards. This always happens!!" he said their POS system always malfunctions when somebody taps a Chase card. Both of the two cashiers insisted this is a normal problem that happens at Safeway and Costco. They didn't say sorry, just said yeah your card is the problem. My card did not decline... They even showed me the screen glitching. This apparently has been a long-term pattern for them at this location whenever somebody pays with a Chase card... and no this doesn't happen at Costco. After a very circular conversation, I asked the cashier to get a manager, and she refused. The other employee backed her up that a manager won't help. I asked if there is a manager here and she said yes, but he's not gonna do anything. I asked her to please get him to see if anything can be done. Eventually the disgruntled "manager", Bobby, arrived. He looked at the screen, suggested retrying something that had already failed, both employees said that wasn't gonna work, and he walked away without acknowledging me. I asked Bobby if there's anything else that can be done to reset the system or manual card entry as I spent quite a while trying to get my groceries. He looked at me impatiently, said no and continued walking away. I understand that systems are imperfect, but it was shitty service to blame this on me, not acknowledge their own system failure, an apology, nor a single alternative solution. The young man who was originally helping me offered to pay for my groceries himself if I paid him back. He said he does it all the time for other customers that have this issue. That was kind, but no employee should feel responsible for covering corporate system failures and poor management out of their own pocket. I declined because I'm not confident I'll be going back to that area anytime soon, I left without my groceries. I stepped outside and called my boyfriend who gave me his virtual card to try (not a Chase card) and came inside a few minutes later to see if they could try that, and they said no they are already putting away my items. I ordered a marble cake with whipped cream and I received the wrong with lemon jelly, called to speak to customer service and a gentleman picked up I informed him what I ordered and how I'm a little down because the ruined the birthday party and he accused me of ordering it excuse me. So I came in the store with my receipt around 10pm and one register was open and I asked the BOBBY if I spoke to him on the phone and HE WAS EXTREMELY RUDE. Safeway Blackhawk's seafood department has 2 kinds of tuna poke, spicy and non-spicy! The shoyu, non-spicy version often runs out by the end of the day. Actually like buying poke at Safeway better than the bulk store down the hill as I can buy as little or as much poke according to my needs. Quality is on par or slightly better than the poke from the aforementioned bulk store. Better yet, Safeway staff is very customer focused. On this occasion, Aditin (not sure of spelling) was awesome. A customer before me got every last bit of the displayed poke. When Aditin saw my disappointment, he checked the back fridge. He offered to make fresh poke on the spot when he found all the ingredients. He cut up the fish and green onions, mixing them with the rest of the stuff. I was shocked but delighted that he went above and beyond the norm. So while this particular Safeway location is crowded, with narrow aisles, and a cramped parking lot, I will continue to shop here. read more

In terms of groceries they have a lot of different variety and items in stock. This review is mainly for the workers, they have a pessimistic attitude and are rude like many others have mentioned. There is a guy that works in the customer service that is really lazy. Safeway has a policy where they take 25 CRV cans in exchange for $1.25. The first time I tried, this guy says it was after 8 pm and it was too late to make the transaction. The next time, he said they had to be bagged up in clear plastic bags. I had them bagged up in opaque t shirt bags but he didn't take it. There is another woman that works in the customer service department, and she took the 25 cans in an opaque t shirt bag with no problem at all. She gets 5 stars. read more

I'm guessing that the reason for the poor reviews is that Blackhawk people can't wait more than thirty seconds in line and are immune to the supply chain shortages that affect the rest of the country. For the rest of us, it's actually quite a pleasant, clean, friendly Safeway with some unique finds. I have not seen fresh-made guacamole at any other Safeway, for example, nor so many varieties of pre-cut and ready to eat fresh fruits and veggies. Have you seen organic fig jam, or heck, just regular fig jam at any other Safeway? The bathrooms are also clean, a rarity in a Safeway, and the rest of the store is neat and well-stocked. There were also several checkers and no wait time when we came in around noon on a Wednesday. When I used to live in Alamo, I frequented the Safeway at Danville Blvd and Stone Valley Rd because it was significantly closer. My loss, this place is so much nicer. I had all the prescription drugs transferred to this Safeway pharmacy. In filling the order for a 3-month supply of latanoprost eye drops, the pharmacist gave me 2 containers. Each 2.5 ml container lasts for 25 days, per every pharmacy I have used for the last 15+ years, per several eye clinic websites and my Dr's note. My personal experience is also in line with this 25 days period. Yet, the pharmacist refuses to even look at all these evidence and rules that the medicine per bottle should last for 42 days and dispensed only 2 containers. She calls it the Safeway policy, and ends the discussion. She was polite but would not consider even consulting with her manager. This Safeway would not take the phone call, and the did not permit me to leave a message. I have no idea why people use this pharmacy. To get screwed? read more

This review is only for the Safeway Tik Tok Wok Chinese Buffet in the Deli section of the store. I was running an errand near the Blackhawk Safeway Store and decided to see what their Asian Buffet was like. This one differs a bit from the other supermarket Asian Buffets in that you get your own plate and select your own food choices using tongs or ladles to add them to your paper plate. The price is the same as their salad bar - $7.99/lb. In most other stores I've seen, the food is behind the glass case counter and a service person puts your plate/carton together. The pricing at these places where the plate is assembled for you charge by the number of choices you make rather than by the pound. I liked this 'self service' better because you can vary the amounts of each choice you make and it all gets charged at the same rate of $7.99/lb. That mean you have a lot more freedom of choice - a little of this, a lot of that, etc. I made up a carton of 3 items (Orange Chicken, Chicken w/ green beans, Kung Pao Chicken) plus the Chicken Chow Mein. I guess I got a little carried away with the portions. It ended up costing me $13.06. I thought it would be about $10! That's OK because I couldn't eat it all anyway and took about 1/2 of it home for later. The various items were surprisingly good. The green bean tasted fresh/crispy and the chicken pieces were nice and tender with a nice sauce. The two other chicken items were nicely sauced and the ratio of chicken to veggies on the Kung Pao Chicken was excellent. There were a couple of negatives. Chicken was the prevailing protein. It would have been better to have a wider selection other than being almost all chicken-based items. The other negative - no indoor seating. That day was no problem because it was a nice, beautiful, sunny day and I ate my lunch at one of several communal metal umbrella tables and chairs set up just outside the door. I had a really really weird experience today at Safeway. I parked by the cart area so I could get a returned cart to tote around an infant seat with my kid it in, and my other 2 kids. I had my infant seat in the basket area, my middle in the seating area, and my oldest was helping me push the cart in. I was stopped by a worker telling me I couldn't go in with a returned cart. Like, what?! Really?! So he made me take all my kids and put them on the floor. Why?! The cart has been sitting in the sun and the germs were probably killed off. Worst service ever. You advertise that you accept bottle returns but 2 out of 3 times I try the people at the store have no idea how to accept bottles. If you charge California bottle tax you need to be able to accept the bottles. For such a large organization it would be nice if you cared for the environment and not just profits. I was thinking about buying the Recurve Rambo Last Blood Bow when I heard, "This is not nonfat yogurt!" I returned to this store even though I am within close distance to 3 Safeway' stores. The people are cordial, patient, and they do not "Flip Out" over wearing a mask! World's worst Safeway bathroom experience. They recently changed the signs to unisex, which is fine, but they need to make some improvements on the overall experience. There was no toilet paper holder. They had a huge roll of toilet paper on the changing table. Awkward. What if someone needs the changing table? What if someone had a blow out on the changing table and then the toilet paper roll was placed there? Very gross all around. In addition the paper towel roll was next to the toilet paper roll. This review concerns delivery from the Camino Tassahara Danville store. I've been a customer of safeway delivery for a long time. But recently It's been degenerating rapidly. Items come with past due dates on them, apples rotting from inside, etc. Today was the tipping point: I had an order that was scheduled from 9am - 10am. They did not show up. I received no communication from them of any kind. I called into customer service and waited for 25 minutes before getting through. Upon inquiry as to the status of my order, I was told that due to a labor shortage and that the store was undergoing training, my groceries would be delivered "several hours from now." Why no communication from them? "Because they were too busy." I asked to talk to a supervisor at the central customer service number. I was on hold for another 15 minutes before being told that no one was answering. The very considerate customer service rep said they'd take a message and contact the store directly and have that manager talk with me. No call was forthcoming. They are making the cable companies examples of exemplary customer service by comparison. I ended up later going down to Nob Hill and buying groceries. Hey, and I learned they now deliver, as well as Walmart, Wholefoods, etc. It's time to try another option. Best of luck to anyone who braves delivery from this store. read more

I've had challenges with this local Safeway's deli department before. It's frustrating that I can't find anyone there who is willing & able to communicate clearly with me as a customer. I can't describe the number of times I've received substandard service or been given the wrong food because the people who work behind the counter simply cannot be bothered to communicate well. Tonight, I went into the store to find out about ordering several large platters for a memorial service. I'm going to need finger food, fruit, meats, cheeses, etc. Along with all of that, I'll buy drinks, plates, cups, flatware, napkins, garbage bags, ice, etc. I'm figuring I'll be spending several hundred dollars on this one purchase. At the deli counter, there's a sign that says, "We Cater" and "Ask an Associate." Counter-person who stepped up to help is one of the people with whom I've had significant problems in the past. She doesn't listen; she mumbles & cannot be heard; she has an incredibly short temper; she never knows what the options are. Horrible customer service. She says, "What do you want?" I'm thinking, "We're off to a good start," but I point to the "We Cater" sign and say, "I need to find out about that. Catering service." She says, "What? Cater?" She's not confused. She's obstinate. I say, "The sign says you cater and to ask an associate. So, I'm asking." I smile. She says, "You want a sandwich?" This is not an invitation. It sounds more like a threat. I say, "I need to know about catering." I'm still smiling. She says, "I don't know anything about catering." Now she sounds like she's offended that no one ever told her anything about catering before. I say, "Shouldn't you know? I mean, don't you work here?" I've lost my smile. I'm not sure where it went. She says, "This counter is for ordering sandwiches." Now she's angry. Now *I* am angry. I knew I shouldn't've gone in there to try to have this conversation. Then, I come to Yelp to write a review. I see virtually identical reviews with messages from the store manager who suggests customers try to communicate through the on-line chat system. So, I try that and bump into a chat rep who's even more incompetent & frustrating than the deli person. Now, I'm even angrier, and I'm going to have to find a different place to buy my food. Good thing there are at least a half-dozen other options nearby that don't have anything to do with Safeway or its management. === UPDATE AFTER DAWN'S MESSAGE: So... I did exactly what she suggested. I went to the Safeway corporate website, clicked on "Contact Us" and searched for any instructions on getting in touch with my local management team. Nothing. Not a big surprise because this is the same page I'd visited to start the chat session. (...which is another funny thing about Dawn's message. She said that the chat function is primarily for home deliveries & member rewards, but in other replies to critical reviews that raise issues essentially identical to mine, she points people to this chat...) I call the main toll-free number, wait on hold for nearly 20 minutes and end up talking with a fairly snotty CSR who tells me that he can only take my phone number and pass it on to my local store. The manager there will call me back at his/her convenience. I'm wondering how that might help me with the immediate issue I have with ordering catering for the memorial service I'm planning, so I ask. He has to admit that it doesn't. I.e.: Safeway isn't interested in helping me with that purchase at any level -- the counter-person whose job it is doesn't want to take the order; the chat & customer service representatives don't know how to put me in touch with the supervising manager; Dawn tells me to go to the website and place the order there, but the point is: I DON'T TRUST SAFEWAY TO DO WHAT THEY CLAIM THEY WILL DO.
