Considering all the street side + brick and mortar taco choices along Roosevelt, it's not hard to consider Sabor Mexicano as average of the pack. Everything from the $2.50 prices to the taco choices down to the very name scream typical. Their one saving grace? Being located right next to the Jackson Heights subway station. Many of the nearby street side taquerias offer some type of specialty, where as Sabor Mexicano offers the usual line up of edibles that most folks here have come to expect. The usual star of the show, the tacos are nothing out of the ordinary; some solid choices from chorizo to carnitas, but without much lime or salsa, the tortillas get dry a little too quickly. Then there is everything else - quesadillas, tortas, and even the occasional cemita. Either the bread is too stiff on the torta / cemita, but the quesadillas marginally win for having a nice crispy exterior. At $4, they're still more expensive than La Quesadilla Sabrosa, who still makes the superior product for cheaper. No bueno. And because they're often so inundated (especially late night and during rush hour), it's not exactly expected one will get great service. Make sure you know exactly what you want prior to ordering (asking questions might not get much feedback), and be hungry, not picky. That's the way to maximize Sabor Mexicano. It's easily better than most tacos in the city and for the price, size and flavor it's one of the best in the city, yes I mean all five boroughs. Cheap tacos = win! I first encountered this taco truck when a friend of mine was introducing me to less-known gems of my old hood, Jackson Heights. I had seen this truck a lot whenever I passed through 74th Street, but I never stopped because I didn't know how the food was. But it's definitely a must try. Tacos are only $2.50 each (supposedly they used to be $2.00) and come with a heap of meat. So far I've had chorizo and beef tongue, and both were delicious. Also, definitely try the sauces. I'm not sure what's in the red bottle (BBQ sauce?) but the yellow bottle is spicy (yay!). My friend had also recommended the cuitlacoche (spelling?) quesadilla, which I didn't get a chance to try that night because they ran out! Anyway, just be aware that crowds might form here, and supposedly this truck is 24/7! I will be back for sure. read more

Sabor Mexicano, just outside the Roosevelt Ave. E, F, R, M subway stop , is always full of people lined up to get their Meixcan cravings. This food cart serves up a few items, Tacos ($2.50), Quesadillas ($4.00), Tortas ($5.00), and Cemitas ($6.00). Taco prices did recently go up to $2.50, but even at the price, it is a steal, with the exception of Mi Mexico Lindo Tacos, who are still serving $2.00 tacos. I've tried 3 tacos at this cart so far, the pollo (chicken), carnitas (pork) and chorizo (sausage). In addition to the staple ingredient, each taco is also topped off with onions and cilantro on a double flour tortilla, the truly authentic way to 'em. The pollo is probably my least favorite. Although the chicken is tender and moist, it didn't seem to hold a lot of flavor. It was good, but with the likes of the pork and sausage tacos, I would definitely recommend the latter two. The pork has some superb marinaded flavors making for an outstanding taco. The pork is grilled so it's a little crisp on the edges, yet still moist on the inside. My favorite of the three. If you want something a little more interesting, the sausage, packs some very good flavor as well as a hint of heat. The chorizo is a bit fatty, but let's not forget sausage is supposed to be a fatty meat. Served on the side is a lime wedge for each taco, and several pieces of raw radish to give some crunchy texture. Portions are decent, with two tacos to appease the hunger of a moderate appetite, and three tacos with someone that has a decent appetite. The pollo quesadillas ($4.00) are also great here. Don't expect your typical flat American version (i.e. TGIF's, Applebee's) of two thin tortillas with meat and cheese and melted on the inside. Sabor Mexicano serves a mean quesadilla. The tortilla shell was crispy and not too greasy, and inside was a mix of chicken, lettuce, and cheese. We first thought of the cheese as ricotta cheese but in a feta cheese texture, but another Yelper had claimed it as Oaxaca cheese, so I'll go with that. It was tasty and filling. It was shockingly good, and I'd pair a quesadilla with a taco or two to make a $9.00 lunch/dinner. There are also two hot sauces available. The green hot sauce, which I believe is a mixture of chili, cilantro and lime and the red hot sauce which seemed to be chili and some other ingredients. The red hot sauce was good, but the green hot sauce seemed to amp up the heat a bit and added an extra layer of complexity from the cilantro and lime. Sabor Mexicano makes some awesome tacos and quesadillas. I will definitely have to stop by here again to fulfill some of my Mexican cravings. If you find this food cart a little too busy, there is another Sabor Mexicano, which is a food truck rather than a cart. It is located one or two blocks east on the North side of Roosevelt Ave. I'm not sure if they are affiliated at all, but they have similar items at the same prices. read more

I wish I traveled via the Roosevelt transit hub more often. These are killer tacos ($2) and quesadillas ($3), on par with any I've ever had. So much flavor, and a few vegetarian options other than cheese, such as huitaloche (corn smut) and champinon (mushroom). I practically dream about these. read more

I was walking around to check out a few places to live at and saw this taco truck right next to the subway station and there were 2 on each side of the street. Everything look delicious and I keep telling myself that I am full but when is the last time I ate a good mexican place?? Anyway I couldn't resist so I stop by and got myself 2 taco's(asada and al pastor-beef and pork). It cost me $2 each alittle steep for taco;s but I couldn't resist. The pork was delicious and very juicy esspecially w.the green sauce and tons of marinated jalapanos and onion and tons of homemade hot sauce. My friend ate the asada and her was even better then mine. I was extremely happy that I got to try it and can't wait to come back for more!! California might have better taco's then NYC but after living in Vermont for 6 months, anything real mexican food is better so maybe that is why I gave them a 4 lol read more

This place is more than "just a taco cart" as another yelper alleges. Firstly, they are there 24 hours a day 7 days a week right outside the Roosevelt Avenue transit hub. Very convenient. Secondly, they have a very wide range of foods other than tacos, notably the quesadillas, but you can also get a burrito or a torta. I haven't had many of their tacos but the quesadillas are super-delicious and a great value at $3 each. They are made with a huge hand-made corn tortilla, melted Oaxaca cheese (similar to mozzarella), your choice of meats, lettuce, onions, guacamole, sour cream, and finished with a sprinkle of cotija cheese (similar to parmesan). mmmmmm Usually one piping hot quesadilla from Sabor Mexicano is enough to fill me up even if I haven't eaten all day. Wash that down with a bottle of mexican soda and you've got yourself a meal. You can tell Sabor Mexicano is the king of taco carts because they have the longest line, and I would bet that many of the customers at the other carts are just spill-over from them. read more

This review is strictly for the quesadilla. My favorite by far is the huitlacoche, which is always tough to describe to those who haven't yet been taken by its delicate flavor. Still not exactly sure what corn smut is. Be prepared to get your hands dirty with this one. Nice blend of herbs in the corn meets black bean juice-looking concoction. Mixed with slightly milky yet neutral oaxaca cheese, a generous helping of crema and sprinkled with grated cotija - this $4 delight hits the spot every time. Perfect sized snack for those late nights after stumbling off the train with an insatiable desire for munchies and light enough not to make you regret it in the morning. The only reason why it doesn't get 5 stars is the sporadic availability of said huitlacoche, where I will need to compromise with tinga, pastor or flor de calabaza. Despite how solid those three (and others) are, the huitlacoche is the bonafide star here, so consider yourself quite lucky if you are able to taste it without repeated failed attempts. read more

My hubby and I passed by this taco cart and decided to try the quesadilla. We actually ordered two carnitas quesadilla but slightly disappointed that we were served only one. Because I don't want to wait another 30 minutes because of the long line of customers (good sign!), we decided to just go with the one. When we got home, we tasted the quesadilla and it was yummy! This place is in the same league as Tacolandia, however, it is just a vendor with a cart outside the Roosevelt Avenue-Jackson Heights subway station, and their are open in rain, snow or sweltering heat, at 6 am on a weekday to 5 am on a weekend... Admirable is all I can say to describe the hard work that is put in by the owner of the cart. A variety of tidbits and snacky Mexican delights are available here, quick service and a very strategic location ensures its business. OK....first let me just clear up a few things some of the other reviewers don't seem to understand: First...someone said $2 is "a little steep" for a taco. I don't really know where you usually buy tacos but $2 is pretty much standard for every taco stand in Jackson Heights...and throughout NYC. Particularly when every taco you get from this place is loaded up to the point where most people can't eat more than two. Secondly....I'm sick of reading idiots questioning the hygiene and cleanliness of places like this. It's a STREET VENDOR. If you've evefr worked in this industry they're highly regulated in NYC and if they weren't clean they'd be shut down. Plus...what frame of reference do you even have to rate the cleanliness of a food stand? When you eat at a sit down restaurant and don't see the kitchen how do you know it's clean? Bottom line is this place has been there running 24/7 for years so they must be doing something right. If they were dirty and served food that made people sick they wouldn't have a long line virtually around the clock. I've been living a few blocks from the subway station where this cart is for a while. It is without a doubt the undisputed king of taco stands in Jackson Heights, which speaks volumes since the neighborhood has about 10 taco stands per block on Roosevelt Ave. between 74th St and Junction Blvd. I eaten at all of them over my time living here and I eat here enough to have been jokingly accused by my girlfriend of having an affair with the girl who works nights. Anyway...the tacos and Quesadillas are absolutely amazing, what else can I say. Whoever posted something about the place being unhealthy needs to get real. Everything in this truck is made fresh, so in the scale of unhealthy food it's miles above the fast food garbage many New Yorkers shove down their gullets every day. If you don't like this place you have no taste in street food so head across the street to McDonalds and call it a day.
