I came to this coffee shop because of all the good reviews. However, it was actually a little disappointing. Their brew is on the bland side and flavorless for me. Yep, this is another local coffee place in Metro-Detroit for you to add to your foodie list to check out. The walk-up window is a game-changer during these COVID times. Small place inside but digging the minimalist decor. Coffee crew is welcoming and helpful, genuine group of people who are dedicated to perfecting your order. My classic go-to is a Cortado w/ Oat, which was tasty and strong. Since they're located downtown Clawson, it's perfect to just stroll around the shops and then make a pit stop for caffeine. They have some seasonal items (like the Draper and Hot Cider), merch, and coffee beans for sale. Heard their Frozen Lattes are fantastic too, so that's on my list to try next. read more

I keep coming here because it's convenient and local, but I'm begging for the coffee to be better. Maybe everyone else who recently discovered a Starbucks macchiato is not a true macchiato will leave a glowing 4 or 5 stars here, but I can't justify that. Since pretty much the beginning, the coffee has a harsher taste than it should. I've tried several of their single origins over the past year and a half, and a few of there blends. My favorites? The Mexican they had last year, as well as the Oh Fudge holiday blend. Why? Because they were balanced. And really chocolatey too, but balanced. As opposed to some of their other single origins, which again seem ascerbic to a degree. The flavor notes are there, they're just not polished smooth. That Ethiopia last year with the raspberry flavor note? It was great at first, then as it cooled, it got harsh. That was from the pot in the cafe, and at home wasn't better. It was really noticeable with the Kenya. Just not balanced or rounded out. Smooth is the opposite of what the coffee tastes like. So that leads me to believe it's the roaster who isn't roasting to the right profile, or their drip pot just isn't extracting right or some other combination of things. Maybe this is their style and they like it that way, well I don't, and I've been routinely driving out of my way to DOCR in RO to get a solid pourover. They close at 4 which is a bummer. Anyhoo, it's nice to have another specialty coffee roaster in town, they do some fun seasonal drinks, and the lattes and espresso is decent. I just really think the single origins could be better, a lot better, but hey, they're new. read more

Everyone here are nice but the coffee isn't the greatest. First of all, it's extremely strong! We all six had gotten coffees and all of us had a stomach ache later from it. It tasted really weird too. I've tried numerous amounts of coffee shops and has never had an experience like this. I sadly won't be back. read more

Good place to stop in and get your coffee! Not tons of space to linger, but worth stopping in for their tasty coffee. Have a few fun options that they switch out and then they have your regular coffee you'd expect to see. Nice add to the Clawson area. I understand that they want to keep it small and unique and I'm sure part of it is because they're still feeling out what the customers want, but I would like to see more options to choose from for drinks and treats. read more

My favorite coffee shop to visit! I am a coffee connoisseur and love visiting Sabbath for both my fresh cappuccino but also my favorite beans. They grind beans to your desired finish (coarse to fine). The people are always great...and the pastries at the register are always tempting! The location is very close to some of my favorites: WTF, 3 Cats and Mojave.. It's a perfect stop to cap off a meal. read more

I saw their stories on the news and social media, so I had to go check them out. I have to say that that latte with a shot of vanilla bean was the best coffee shop beverage I have had in a long time. WOW! It was full of flavor. It was piping hot and everything tasted fresh, authentic & delicious. My wife liked her coffee too-it wasn't her first choice because it was a light/medium roast and she likes dark roast, but the quality was good. I hope they have continued success because the owners and employees seem sincere and down to Earth. One of the owners made my latte and we were chatting it up a bit while I waited. I was greeted immediately upon entering the business and my order was promptly taken. It took maybe five minutes for me to order and get my drinks-awesome! The coffee shop was incredibly appealing to the eyes-lot's of cool and modern decorations and colors. It was also clean. I will be back soon for another latte. read more

Last week I came in for a latte and ended up having a really helpful conversation with Trevor about my failed attempts to make a good cup of pour-over decaf with Sabbath beans (or any beans, for that matter). We talked about the challenges of decaf, specific tweaks to my water temp, beans:water ratio, pouring pattern, and grind. I am so happy to say I'm on day 4 of good coffee! My partner and I have to avoid caffeine due to health complications, but I still love coffee, and I'm glad to see the stigma and snobbery about decaf is lessening. Trevor was immensely helpful and saved me from dishonoring another bag of beans with my amateur skills. For the curious, my new successful setup is this: - 25g Sabbath decaf beans - Ground to a 16 on a Baratza Encore - 201 degree water temp using a Stagg EKG electric kettle - Using a glass V60, pouring ~75g water in a steady swirl to bloom for 30-45s - Then pouring the remainder of a total of about 400g of water, as the volume of the V60 cone allows (remembering that my swirl technique is super important here, too!) - Aiming to get total brew time around 3:30-4:00 minutes Thank you, Trevor! read more

Sabbath was a super cute little coffee shop and I can't wait to see what they do post-covid time!!! We got one of their special drinks and an iced latte as well as some of the donuts they sell there (Dooped Donuts) They were busy but the two baristas were so friendly and excited to be there. Stopped in at Sabbath a couple weeks ago before they officially opened - Trevor was kind enough to hook us up with a sample cup. The Ethiopia on tap was tasty and just what we needed. This morning, I swung by to grab a pound of Ritual, only to be notified that the purchase of a pound came with a complimentary cup of batch brew. The batch brew hit the spot. A shot of Ritual (Ethiopia + Guatemala) espresso is five stars - rich and decadent. The owners are coffee connoisseurs, kind people, and clearly passionate about their shop. Hands down the friendliest staff you'll ever encounter. They're passionate about coffee, and dang do they know what they're doing! They are the quintessential neighborhood coffee shop! It's a tiny store front with an area to order coffee at this point in time. The coffee is PHENOMENAL! The iced latte really showcases the espresso flavor and it's amazingly smooth and complex! Loved it! Really great coffee with an extremely friendly vibe! I got an iced skim milk latte, it was delicious! I've ventured far and wide to find the best coffee shops in Detroit. I've gone as far as Lansing and Ann Arbor in search of the best coffee. This place beats all coffee shops that I've been to and I can start naming dozens. Their unique menu and seasonal menu really set this place apart from other coffee shops by miles. Okay FIVE Stars for me is REALLY RARE! I have been hearing about this place on instagram & a few coworkers talk about this shop! Im impressed!! I live about 40 mins from here but work 15 mins from this place - I have been saying before 2020 comes to a close I Need to try this place! The green wall is super refreshing & I love the fluorescent light! This place 100% passes the vibe check! Their coffee is Great too! I chatted with the owner for a bit - He told me about the espresso machine & the roasting process. I LOVE coffee culture so I could have stood there for an hour talking to him! I was surprised that they roast their beans light/med I feel like most people lean towards a bold cup of coffee but the coffee here was lighter in body while still being really flavourful I was really impressed. I have a few blond favourites & this house coffee that they had prepared definitely made it into the top 10! Its out of the way for sure but I do want to visit again soon! read more

I'm really happy that this place exists! I've been partial to local craft coffee for several years and was pleased to see a new offering so close to home! I've been buying bags regularly for a while now and enjoy my regular trips in there for a drip (free when you buy a bag of beans) and a bag to take home for the week. I've really enjoyed all of the varieties so far and hope this becomes a long time staple here in the area. read more

Tried the frozen latte, it's ok. Very weak for a latte. Tastes like it was sweetened too which I'm not a big fan of. I like to taste the expresso. Maybe it was a weak batch? Next time I'll order a regular coffee and see if it's strong enough. read more

Sabbath Coffee Roasters specializes in finding the best beans, ethically sourced from around the world. Our Ritual Ethiopian blend is a perfect example of our team's relentless efforts to find the best coffee beans, even if that means they are 7,500 miles away. Every blend is expertly roasted daily to bring out the full flavor.

History

Established in 2015.

Trevor and Miranda Graham grew Sabbath Coffee Roasters around the idea that coffee offers rest. After meeting over a cup of coffee in 2012, the couple married two short years later and their love for coffee only grew more feverishly. As the couple found themselves working more and more and seeing less and less of each other, they realized just how special simply sharing a cup of coffee together meant to them. Their growing curiosity to dive deeper into the science of coffee led them to purchase a small home roaster (and set off smoke alarms, on multiple occasions, in their apartment complex.) After much experimentation they started passing out samples to friends and family. Slowly, these samples turned into purchases, leading them to the curation of Sabbath Coffee Roasters. We want to share that special feeling of a freshly roasted cup of coffee, which is why we launched our Clawson, Michigan location in October 2020.

The two hour class was informative and immensely helpful, including both didactic and hands on approaches. We reviewed the basics, spent some time learning to steam the perfect textured milk, and each had at least two attempts to practice the heart shaped art. The drink did not disappoint, he uses quality ingredients and it was very evident. Coffee was delicious and it had a hint of brown sugar come through without being a diabetics nightmare.
