*Service Review / Not Food Review* TL;DR: Cheesecake arrived at an unsafe temp and had to throw it away, because no temperature control was given to the packaging. No exchange or refund was issued. Unfortunately, I had a poor service experience. I ordered a NY cheesecake for my girlfriend and had it shipped to California. I wanted to surprise her with her favorite dessert from the city of its origin. I thought it would've been a great experience for the both of us. After reading on Reddit of the best cheesecake places in NY, S&S was recommended a few times, so I figured I'd give it a try. I ordered it using their 2 day delivery service, since overnight would make it too expensive for me, but figured it'd be fine since there would probably be ice packs or something of the sort to help keep the cheesecake cool during its travel. The cheesecake arrived and to my surprise, it was just a normal cheesecake to-go box inside of a FedEx box, with no type of insulation to keep it temperature controlled. Sadly, upon a reading temperature of 64 degrees, it entered the temperature danger zone, and was unsafe to eat it, so I had to throw it away. I emailed the business and didn't receive a response, so I called them, and the owner talked to me. I tried to explain the situation, and he said, "I've been doing this for over 50 years. If you were worried about the temperature, maybe you should've ordered overnight. My cheesecake is fine at room temperature. I can leave mine out for two days at room temperature and it'd still taste great and be fine." There was no winning an exchange or refund on this man's part. I sadly had to take my losses and go. I understand ordering overnight would've been the best possible course of action, but I figured some type of care would've been considered for a dairy product that is being shipped through air, across the country. If your product can't be safe to eat upon arrival, why offer that service with that shipping time option? Crazy, how that store policy is not honored. So disappointed! I ordered a cheesecake to be shipped to California for my husband's birthday. It came in a regular FedEx box with no temperature control. This is a dairy product that was shipped across country. How is that safe to eat? Would you eat a cheesecake that's been sitting out in the heat for two days?!?! We were met with cheesecakes as far as the eye could see, and we picked up a plain, $22 (cash only) option for Thanksgiving dinner a few blocks away. The mark of a good cheesecake lies not in the add-ons but the basics, and this one was by far the best cheesecake my family and I have had in recent memory: The texture was firm but also melt-in-your-mouth creamy, the balance between sweet and savory was perfect, and the smallish (approximately 10" around) size was enough dessert for eight of us. The many times that I bought a cheesecake from S&S I got it from the bodega on the same block as the "restaurant-bakery" was closed. I therefore can't critique the service or the ambiance. Go back to a starter cheesecake from Ebinger's in Brooklyn through Lindy's in Manhattan (2nd best) then on to hundreds of bakeries and restaurants. From the bottom crust to the density of the cheese to the texture and finally the taste suffice to say it is the best I ever had. Oh, I forgot! I did find its equal. In a good number of restaurants I found them. When I inquired if they baked it in house I was advised that they came from S&S. Suffice to say it is the best I ever had. read more

Believe the hype, the cheesecake is perfect. CASH ONLY. Small, traditional cheesecake is about $17. Expensive? Yes. Worth it? 100%. Creamy, not too sweet, silky texture. Not a crack in sight. Crust stays on each piece and bite. During the week they allow people to come and pick up, when i came they were slow so you have to ring the bell or knock hard to be let in. A factory storefront is an unfinished cafe. This is not a typical retail operation, but the cheesecake is bomb. First, the door is locked so I call. A scary guy with a limp opens the door. No slices! The small size cheesecake is $17. If you get a hot out of the oven cheesecake you've scored big time. Some of the cheesecakes are frozen because it's mainly a food service and mail order operation. They ship to high end restaurants.The cheesecakes here have a custard like consistency and are in no way reminiscent of Juniors which is creamier, in a way, but very mass produced looking and tasting. I ordered a small cherry size, a large strawberry, and a large plain. I also had them in that order though in 3 different places (and more than one night). The cherry wasn't that great. I was definitely disappointed. The strawberry was vastly different and really solid. I was really surprised at how much better it was though still not necessarily amazing cheesecake. What does it mean when you give the rest of the cheesecake to the cats? I went to their store and it appears they are renovating it to make a cafe, I guess to serve cheesecake. I wanted a fresh cake so I got there early so as not to buy it from the bodega a few doors down. Years ago I never had a problem with that either, but the cake has changed. As I said below, I think they changed the recipe. It's dry, not creamy, a tough crust. I got a rock hard frozen cake that was dry, crumbly, stiff. I can't believe it. Why, for the love of all things holy, would you change this cheesecake? This cheesecake is as iconic as... Katz's pastrami. And Gertels Delancey Russian Coffee Cake. I don't like Juniors. I don't like the layer of cake at the bottom. I buy their cheese pie, as they call it, with pineapple on it, to get the creamy texture. It's still a far cry from the original S& S cheesecake. Having grown up in New Jersey. I was stoked to find frozen juniors at my local Costco for one time. My husband sent an S&s one here in Seattle for Mother's Day. The texture is amazing. If you order it by the slice, it's not too expensive. If they're closed (which they often are), then go to Van Cortlandt Grocery just 5 stores to the West on the same side of the street, and they sell S & S slices and whole cakes there for similar prices with much more extended hours. You have to come... ahem, sorry, had to clear my throat. You have to come and try this Cheesecake. It's worth making a pilgrimage out to the Bronx for (along with Gyro King, Greek Express, Duck-a-genie Burek, El Atoradero for Mexican, and Louie & Ernie's Pizza). You'll be glad that you, er, came. It's so smooth and silky and sinful. Heavy and filling and yet dreamy and swirly and orgasmic. It's typical NY-style Cheesecake but it's NY-style perfected. I am hardly in the Kingsbridge area and asked a few people within my circle if they were in the mood for cheesecake so we could finally get our S&S on. I easily found non-metered parking, which generally is not the norm in this area and walked directly across the street to S&S. This nondescript, factory-type, welded, steel-mesh, grey-painted, windowed entryway had a look that screamed 'beware do not enter'. The store itself slightly reminded me of an off-limits warehouse that shouldn't be entered by the public and was the most intriguing part of this journey, more so than the item I came for. After being buzzed in, and walking into a dark, dank area, a young lady came from the back with a pleasant and prideful demeanor. You could see that she was proud of her product with her infectious smile which in turn made me happy. After a very quick $17.00 exchange, I left with my purchase of a small plain cheesecake. I walked out of this old school spot, infectious with happiness and ready to boast to everyone how this cheesecake has been coined by many as the best in the Bronx. I couldn't wait.... Hold up!? How could this be? Bad batch maybe? Over baked maybe, as the top was slightly burnt? Or maybe that's just the norm. I was so disappointed, as I was looking forward to a creamy and smooth texture, not crumbly and dry; the flavor and texture was not to my liking. Within my circle, the feedback was half for and half against, sad to say I was on the side of against. The half that were for it, thanked me for the introduction and happily ravaged the remainder. I will chalk, no pun intended, this up as an off day or maybe this is a normal day as S&S will certainly be okay without me due to their long standing reputation and following. I now understand why the Golden Girls would eat all that cheesecake day in and day out - they must have had it delivered from S&S. I was initially drawn to this place by Yelp, but I quickly learned that this is a pretty famous place in its own right. S&S does one thing and one thing right: cheesecake. They have a few flavors available in two different sizes - that's it. Honestly, that's all you need - this place is no frills in the best way. The bakery doesn't have a storefront, it's just their kitchen (kinda looks like a hole in the wall). You ring the buzzer and are let in where there's a small table and a cooler showing the different cheesecakes they have. I went simple and got a small plain cheesecake. Honestly, so good ; it was fluffy and creamy without being too rich - truly the quintessential slice of cheesecake. Believe the other reviews - this place deserves the praise it gets. Let them get to room temperature and they were dry, not moist at all and not great tasting. They actually tasted stale. Were they previously frozen? Don't think they were baked today!
