After getting under the house, he quickly determined that the odor was coming from the laundry area, not the dryer vent. It was the foul smell of a skunk. The dryer vent was indeed in need of cleaning; reassembling the ductwork, he used screws and tape, so I feel it's very serviceable. The gentleman was considerate and flexible because I asked him to give our wood insert chimney a mid-season cleaning. Having a strong draw is essential since it provides over 60% of our heat.
