It used to be a great place for some cheap and delicious tacos but lately, the prices have gone up and the quantity and quality of the food has gone down. Our overcoming love of tacos resulted in also trying the pork, ground beef & fajita chicken. Disappointment was nowhere to be found. We recently moved here and ALMOST rented an apartment within walking distance of Rusty Taco. I can only imagine how fat & broke we almost were.... I'm usually not a fan of Mexican places that charge for chips and salsa, but this place is the exception to that rule. They only charge a buck and their chips are really good. The salsa always tastes fresh, and not like it comes from a jar. I first tried this place because every time i go to Fuzzy's tacos they put the stupid Feta cheese on my tacos even though I order them without. This has happened at EVERY Fuzzy's I've ever tried except one in Beaumont. So, one night wanting tacos I gave Rusty's a try. I am so glad I did. I have tried several of the tacos, and have yet to have a bad one. However, they have the best Baja Shrimp tacos I have ever had. I always get those now. I love their Baja sauce, and the shrimp are always cooked perfectly. The tortillas are very tasty, and all the vegetables are good. The fajita tacos are good as well, but every time I go, I just end up getting the shrimp ones. The staff is always very friendly, and will answer any questions you have about the menu. The queso is pretty good, its not the best, but far from the worst I have had. They have nice outdoor seating when the weather is nice, and you can always get your tacos to go. This place is amazing. Affordable and delicious tacos. The shrimp Baja taco was my favorite. It had fried shrimp topped with a creamy sauce and cabbage. Others to try are the fried chicken and the fajita beef tacos. The fajita beef was well seasoned and topped with onions. It would be second favorite taco here. Some others to mention are the roasted pork and the brisket tacos. I like the pork more than the brisket, but the cheese on them was a little to strong for me. From the start I thought this was an average taco place. I love tacos, but can't really find a place that stands out. BOY WAS I WRONG!!! This place is AWESOME!!! Went here for the first time today with my two friends after finding it through yelp. All together we got 2 black bean tacos, 2 chicken fajita tacos, 1 fried chicken tacos, and chips and salsa. Everything tasted great especially for the price. The only thing that we had a problem with was my sister is a vegetarian and she had gotten the black bean tacos. A taco and a half in she realized they had put brisket in it under the beans (which I'm pretty sure they don't normally do). She was devastated and very upset. We told the manager and he apologized several times, refunded our whole meal, and gave her two black bean tacos without meat to go, and told us next time we came in it was on the house. Good for lunch. Breakfast leaves me wanting - found the eggs too greasy for my taste. It's not fancy but many places like this aren't and that's OK. The food is okay and tacos are cheap. I always get the same thing when I come. I get the Picodillo and the shrimp tacos. I've had better Picodillo but the shrimp is very delicious. It comes with cabbage so it gives the taco the extra crunch you need. The Picodillo is overloaded with onions. I love onions but it gets overwhelming at times. The Picodillo is also kind of bland. You have to make sure you go during rush hour though so that the protein is always fresh. The staff is very nice though and restaurant is clean. Ok I am very surprised by the overwhelmingly positive reviews of this place. I've now been here at least 3-4 times since it opened since it's near my parents' house. Each time, I think I expect something better but it's always consistently delivered slightly below average. It may be that I always order the same consistently bad things on the menu or that I only eat this to go, but nevertheless. Blah. First, I'm a bit of a street taco snob I guess. Having dined on the finest street tacos from Mexico City to Chicago (chicago actually has amazing Mexican food with a large Mx population), I've developed a good taco palate. Hah. And when I say "fine," I mean street food fine: cheap AF and delicious AF. I love a street taco! All you need is some seasoned meat, onions, cilantro, lime and salsa optional on a corn tortilla. So rusty has the basics. But just something is off in the execution. 1) too much meat. Ok I know right what?! But we're in tx! However, I'd rather pay less/ taco and have a better balanced taco with less meat. The rusty taco with pulled pork and pineapple for example came just with one giant clump of dry pulled pork with a tortilla barely able to fold. The balance was totally off. Also, the meat is not cut into small enough pieces (does not apply to the pulled pork of course but for the other tacos...). You need the surface area on a smaller dice (eg in the chicken and beef fajita tacos) to get the spices which leads me to point two... 2) too little flavor on the meat. If we had loads of flavorful meat that I'd want to eat on its own, the above comment wouldn't be an issue. But in their case, you need salsa and loads of it to add some flavor to the dry meat. 3) not enough lime. Probably not an issue if I were eating there, but that little tiny barely there like wedge included in the take out order is just not enough. Again, it's desperately needed to add flavor to the bland fillings. Ok but I will give praise where it's due. The salsas are solid. I bet the original rusty could make a damn good taco judging by the salsa but sadly, not this offshoot. Also, not traditional Mexican but the Baja shrimp with grilled shrimp was also good. Nice balance. Good chipotle sauce. And thank goodness not a heavily breaded dry shrimp! Surprising to see the earlier review where they argued about there being grilled shrimp--I had it! Definitely passable! I'd give that taco a 3.5 or maybe even higher But Baja shrimp tacos aren't really my thing. Overall, I guess for Plano, a good simple street taco isn't easy to find so this will suffice. But if you're really keen on a good one, you'll have to venture downtown. read more

Officially made it to Dallas today, and the first stop was for food! Lunch at Rusty Taco was the perfect quick yet tasty local staple. We tried the BBQ Brisket Nachos (homemade barbecue sauce was truly the best and sweetest one I've ever had) as well as a Chicken Fajita Taco with Grilled Vegetables. The queso was also great and not spicy at all! (Fun tip - try squirting some salsa into the queso for even more flavor!) I am in love with their tacos. In my opinion, this is the best taco joint around. The prices are so low and the food tastes so great! It is usually pretty busy, so sometimes there is a small wait for your food, but it's worth the wait. Keep in mind it's busy because everyone loves the food! Came here on a Sunday for dinner. It was not too crowded and the vibe inside is cool. Everything is made to order so don't expect fast food. I had the roasted pork, shrimp and the brisket tacos. The brisket and shrimp was excellent, very soft and plenty of meat. The roasted pork on the other hand, was not so great. It smelled and tasted like cat food. I think this place generally puts out a good product and good for the price. I would just stay away from the roasted pork. They have a special on Tuesday so try that if you are unsure. read more

Came on a busy Saturday. The food was the same as the rest of the Rusty's I've been to. They were short staffed. I heard the lady at the counter trying to explain to another patron that someone had called in today. The three stars comes from all the little things. 1. They guy calling you for our orders is trying to be funny, and after sitting here for 30 minutes, it's so annoying. He just called someone the way you would call a dog. 2. I asked for limes for my beer and they gave me limes covered with cheese and cilantro. I mean, cool, extra cheese, but I had to lick all the limes before I squirted them in my Coronas. 3. They messed up one of our orders. NBD. They fixed it. 4. They don't take the rewards card the other Rusty's take. So, no free tacos here. I'm the end, ok. Not great. read more
