Little better on this visit. I still don't feel the place is as comfortable as I like. I do not feel relaxed inside--very hustle bustle. Outside? Very HOT. Had the barbacoa--bout the same--okay. I was with a group of parents and we'd all just put our munchkins on the bus to camp. They wanted a place where they could get beer and this was the closest place on University from the "dump your kids" spot. Nice beer selection, but I only had a Coke. Still, service was quicker and parking was fine. I'm glad the new wore off. I don't have to hate myself for choosing to eat here. That being said...I will still opt for Torchy's. The food is amazing. Eating here made me sad. I drove by it the other weekend and thought "Another taco joint, awesome"...but after having had it, I wish I had never saw it. Located in a converted gas station off University & Greenville, I sauntered down here, hungry and thirsty, after a scorching 18 miler Saturday morning. Beers were in bottle on ice - fairly decent selection to choose from, including PBR and Schlitz. Those choices made me laugh. Cash register guy was either on his first day, or was completely clueless. I tried ordering a brisket taco - he asked a manager if they served it yet, and she said "Not until 11AM - breakfast only." That pretty much ruined the entire experience for me. We then asked for queso while we made our breakfast taco selection - "Nope, not ready." Seriously? We finally chose off the fairly limited breakfast menu and paid. Said cashier goes to use a bottle opener on a Bud Light, and I twist off the other cap in front of him. He goes "Wow, didn't know you could do that." Wait around a few minutes for the food to come out - our name is called, and the chips and salsa are missing from the plate, even though it's clearly on the receipt. Have to ask for it - it takes about 5 minutes for a (different) guy to fumble around, unwrap plastic wrap from over the salsa container, and get our chips and salsa. Overall - the tacos were just alright. 3 tiny slivers of Hormel Sausage made up the jalapeno sausage taco with egg. There really wasn't much taste until I put on a whopping amount of the Habanero sauce, which, was quite tasty. (And spicy) Our other taco was the bacon and egg taco - again, not much flavor or taste to it without the hot sauce. (Bacon was nice and crispy, I will give them that) Chips were completely devoid of any salt on them. I left that place disappointed, slightly poorer, still hungry, and dissatisfied with the fairly incompetent service. Cheap, fast, low priced, and freshly made just for you. What more can you ask for? Rusty Taco offers lunch and breakfast tacos. The tacos are small but priced very low so you feel no guilt ordering a few of them. My personal favorite are the baja shrimp tacos which have the most perfect sauce. Far better than the Torchy's equivalent in my opinion...primarily for the sauce. Torchy's has a larger shrimp taco and adds pickled onions to theirs, but the sauce on this Rusty version is something I dream about. The place has an extremely hipster vibe to it. This place would fit in well in Austin or SF. The seating is a bit weird...either barstools or these extremely long tables which you have to share with other people. Plenty of outdoor seating which is a bit silly because it's Texas...nobody sits outdoors unless it's that one week of the year in which that is possible. For the price point, it's a great location. Prices per taco range between $2 and 3. They also have decent chips & salsa. I have never tried their queso but imagine it would have a hard time comparing to Torchy's. They have a basket of little pre-packaged hot sauces & salsas to choose from to compliment their tacos. I am enamored with their habanero sauce. It is super hot but it is just the perfect flavor. I water it down with the mild salsas to enjoy it. They serve coke products in the fountain and have sugar cane sodas in bottles available. Parking here can be a challenge at 12:30 during the lunch rush. The parking lot out front is odd...so BEWARE when leaving your parking space. It may look like there's a ramp down to the street where you expect it but there is not! The ramp is unusually placed near the corner of the intersection so I constantly see cars flying off the curb trying to get out of the strangely shaped front parking lot. Just before I drafted this, I read some of your reviews and was shocked at some of the scores. I knew that Leslie Brenner of the DMN had mixed feelings but she and I often don't agree as much as me and some of you Yelpers. I am not going to say Rusty Taco was the best ever (your position is safe Torchy's) but my visits have been delightful. Yes, I get a kick out of the converted, open gas station. Yes, I like the fact that tacos are $2 bucks and chips and salsa will ring you up an extra dollar. Each visit has been met by some splendid customer service that my favorite doesn't even attempt to try. The tacos sampled were inconsistent with the brisket and pork being juicy and tasty but the chicken rating a huge disappointment. The salsas and guac were pleasnat additions (Hey, Fuzzy's you might want to think about that salsa component!) I will visit RT again if I am on that side of town. My husband went here and he was very disappointed. The flour tortillas wasn't done and he didn't have any vegetables it wasn't tasty and presentation was terrible. Drove by and saw this gas station converted into a cool looking taco place.. Finding parking was impossible lol.. saturday afternoon and ever spot was full.. I go in and order 5 tacos.. Beef Fajita ... Chunks of Beef, steak like.. was good, but not much on flavor.. Doused it with the hot sauce.. and green sauce.. both of which had blah flavor.. not spicey I also tried the shrimp taco..which was the best overall. spicey, flavor.. Chicken fajita..was ok, Pork Piccadillo- Beef with potato.. all were just blah, not much flavoring.. but not horrible.. The tacos were small, but for the price not worth it.. 2.$ each I wont be back,cause it was too bland for me.. Rusty, oh Rusty. You're definitely rusty and showed that you need to practice a little more on your taco making skills. We had lunch with some friends yesterday and got to say that I was terribly disappointed. We ordered one of each of the tacos served here and none was good. The least bad was the fish taco but then again, it was primarily cole slaw with 3-4 tiny pieces of fish. The chips and queso, on the other hand, were pretty good although the queso doesn't seem to be for sharing (as the serving is really small). Since it's a new restaurant and they probably are still working on the details (both on the food and the service) I will give them one month to get their stuff together - both flavor and service wise. Queso is good, but the only decent tacos here are the breakfast tacos. Regardless, taco portions are so small that you're lucky you can taste anything other than the tortilla. The lack of flavor doesn't help. Also, what's so good about $2 per taco when you have to order 6 just to get a taste and a full tummy? This place isn't on par with other good taco joints around town and I usually leave somewhat hungry and unsatisfied. Why have I gone here more than once? wow. I went before even checking on yelp and regret it. Like everyone else's reviews, the wait was LONG and the quality not worth the wait. Oh and to everyone that keeps saying "you can't beat that price", YES YOU CAN: everyone does. Fuel city is only around a buck fifty. With only two registers and two cooks, i don't' think it's going to get any better as they grow. I don't really see them as sticking around. In simple terms - I'm disappointed. After receiving much hype and early opening buzz, I expected to receive a tasty taco experience. Unfortunately, that tasty taco experience would have to wait for another day. My girlfriend and I went to Rusty early on a Sunday afternoon, hoping to get some breakfast tacos. We were dismayed to learn that Rusty stopped selling breakfast at 11am. On a Sunday. In Dallas. Really? So we reverted to lunch tacos. I went with a Brisket Taco and a Picadillo (ground beef, potatoes and spices). The Brisket was dry and flavorless. The Picadillo's ground beef tasted like the ground beef you get at Taco Bell, only less greasy. We also ordered a side of chips and salsa. The chips were decent, and held up to the chunky (and very spicy) salsa. Overall, the best thing that Rusty Taco has going for it are the prices. But even that isn't a great differentiator in this town. You can get better tacos for similar prices at places like Tacos Y Mas or El Atoron. If you're thinking about checking out Rusty Taco - skip it. read more

Hey guess what- it's tacos. But here are a few things that maybe you didn't know. Some people are genetically predisposed to think that cilantro tastes like soap. I am not one of these people- but if you are: know that they put almost a salad of cilantro on many of their tacos. You might ask for them to take it easy or skip it all together. They play 90s country music here. Not my favorite, but I can deal. Pass me a beer. They have a fair selection of beers, and margaritas. They have parking in front and in back. Back lot is much bigger. They have outdoor seating on two sides of the building, so chances are you can find a nice shady spot. I wish I could give this place 10 stars. It. Is. Effing. Delicious. I love tacos. And I also love beer. Put the two together and you got yourself one extra happy curly haired girl (and I'm not just alluding to myself. I'm sure other curly haired girls would agree if you were to take a poll). This place is so fantastic. Small, simple and tasty as all get-out. It's super cheap, too, which makes it taste that much better. $2 for a taco, $3 if you get fancy. The beer is standardly priced as well, and the chips and salsa (spicy and good) is dirt cheap. The perfect "joint" to visit when it's warm out and you just wanna eat tacos, drink mexican beer and enjoy the day. Allison C and I thought we'd give it a shot today for lunch. Our reviews differ....maybe it's because we ordered differently. I wanted to give this a 2 based solely on the food but I had to bump it up a notch because it was clean, the cashiers were really nice and helpful, the service was fast and the parking was great given it's on Greenville. I ordered the pork and pineapple and the fish taco. I'm with Allison, I didn't think they were as small as others have mentioned - 2 was enough for me with chips and dip. The first few bites of the pork were good but then they had a wierd after taste...and then it was just gross - half eaten taco in trash...blech. Taco #2...was just ok. The fish was fresh, so were the toppings but it didn't have alot of flavor - wasn't as good as Hacienda on Henderson's. I also got the guac and chips. The guac was really good once I picked all the pieces of chopped tomato out, but I won't hold that against them....just a personal preference. All in all, Allison said she'd go back - I said I wouldn't for lunch, but maybe to try the breakfast tacos. read more

Ugh. First of all, it took 15 minutes to get three breakfast tacos. (I know it is a new place but there were only 7 people there). We are talking 2 egg and cheese and 1 egg, cheese, and fresh jalapenos. Needless to say, I was very late to work. Besides being slow, they didn't seem to care about cleanliness. I witnessed one guy wipe his face with his hands and then proceed to touch the bacon and the pot it was cooking in. Then the lady manager decided to clean her wound and dress it next to the register. Someone needs to teach them that those things should be done in the back of the house. I don't want to see your bloody tissue. Got my tacos to work, gave the egg and cheese to my friend, and unwrapped mine to find that they used pickled jalapenos instead of fresh. Fine, I will eat them anyways. I regretted my decision after my first bite was full of egg and a JALAPENO STEM. Gross, spit that puppy out and searched for more. Yep, 2 stems in my taco, lucky me. Went today to check this place out around 6:30 with a friend. Been waiting for this place to open for over a month, and couldn't wait to try it. The line wasn't out the door, but it was a tiny bit long. No problem. It took a little while to get my tacos, but considering how busy they were, I didn't mind. I do wish they would have had an extra person to help make them. The poor guy stuffing the tortillas did it in a slightly haphazard way, and I imagine it was because he was struggling to keep up. I ordered three chicken tacos and a margarita. They were nothing short of delicious. I will say they didn't have as much chicken as I would have liked. The tortilla looked like it swallowed the contents of it. Again, I attribute this to the extremely high demand. My frozen margarita was pretty tasty, and it went well with my meal. The place itself was really nicely laid out. Lots of room to sit, and a neat patio. It's all very open and even inside you could get the breeze from the garage windows. I will definitely be back to this place. They have some kinks to work out, but the same can be said for just about any new business. Noticed this place on the way down Greenville, you can't miss it. Thought I would give it a try as I haven't been on yelpville to see what's up lately. I ordered the #3 and #4 (beef and chicken fajita)...I was thinking "if they can make these solid, they have a chance for the rest and I'll be back". They weren't good at all. The chicken was cut in squares and the beef was tasteless (even after lots of sauces on top). Too bad, they missed the mark on a good location. The only thing that was good was the cold beer and the patio. Maybe you could just enjoy the beer and the patio, and not eat the tacos :-) Pass on this, and keep going to your regular spots. read more

Not the best taco in town, but certainly a good one. The "Rusty Taco" was delicious with pineapple tangy flair. I also had the brisket taco which was mediocre, but not bad. The salsas may lack fire, but they do have flavor. Not everything needs to set your mouth aflame, and there is something to be said for flavor. The service was pleasant and the interior is simple and a bit Austinesque: a little bit hipster with a divey feel. My friends and I enjoyed sitting down for our tacos and beer. Also, I love that "Rusty Taco" can be found in Urban Dictionary, and that you can buy a t-shirt with said phrase on it. Muh-ha-ha, unsuspecting out-of-towners. read more

I was very excited to try this place, and I am sorry to say I was extremely disappointed. Disappointment #1: We went on Sunday around noon hopeing to get some breakfast tacos, only to find that they stop serving breakfast at 11:45am!! Why in the world would you stop serving breakfast on a WEEKEND at 11:45am? I was then forced to make a last minute order decision off of their regular menu. Disappontment #2: I ordered the #1 and #4. Both tacos were room temperature - not very appetizing, and I bit down on several unidentified hard pieces in my #4. I have to give them props for the concept and design, but it was not well executed at all! From now on, I will be sticking to my all-time favorite taco shop, Taco Joint. I live a couple of blocks from the RT and after reading the early reviews, thought I would give it a few more weeks for them to work out the kinks before trying them out. It was 5:30pm on Wednesday after driving by and seeing only 4 cars in the parking lot, decided today was the day. There were 2 registers and no line so my order only took a few minutes. I ordered almost 1 of every taco with a side of guacamole and took the whole shebang to go. Each taco was individually wrapped in foil with an extra paper sack of chips and red and green hot sauces. There are several pictures already here of tacos but not very many labeled so I've added my own. The easiest taco not to "f' up was the picadillo - basically just ground beef and cubed potatoes - hash, but in this version no spicy sauce. Seriously, I have made my daughter a spicier (read: flavorful) version since her teeth came in when she was a tot. Also, it was so greasy that I had trouble hanging onto it (notice the sheen in the pic). It was all down hill from there. I'm glad I saved the shrimp taco until the end because it was so salty I couldn't taste anything else after trying it - like a salt lick on the foil. The tortillas could have been the cheapest brand at any grocery store - they were literally cracking (yes, cracking/breaking) as I bit into each one. The only reason they get 2 stars is because the guacamole was actually decent with a nice bite to it - just lacked a bit of lemon juice. Beers are $2.50 domestic; $3.50 for international (e.g., Corona); and the 'ritas are $5 which I thought was pretty expensive considering how small the cup is (maybe 10oz? - check out pic). There is little seating indoors and sparse shade in front. The picnic tables on the side patio are not covered - WTH?!? Texas in the summer with 100+digits for weeks at a time and no shade? There is no other way to put it - this place sucks. I see that an earlier reviewer gave it 4 stars and I'm shocked since they have eaten at Fuel City and should know better. If a place is called "_______ Taco", then they should be rated heavily on their main fare - tacos, and not solely on some side dish. Anyone who reads my reviews know how much I try to support smaller businesses but this place is a wreck. There are so many better options just south of this location that it is worth driving down the road for a couple of miles to lower Greenville, Ross/Henderson, or down Mockingbird to Sol's Taco Lounge. read more

Dearest Rusty, thank you for a relatively expedient and tasty lunch experience. Your communal seating allowed my coworker and I to meet your friend, Randy, who gaves us the lowdown on your new business and sang your praises the entire time we were waiting for our food and scarfing it down. Here's the scoop on our experience: Having read other Yelp reviews about timing issues etc., my coworker and I decided to dash out for an early lunch and we were greeted, quite by the grace of god, by a sweet parking spot in back. We nearly run in, given the line is quickly becoming long and butting up against the door. We give the place a visual once over and a few minutes later end up by the cashier where I have chosen to parktake in a #2 (roasted pork), a #4 (chicken), and a #9 (anchiote pork); all on corn tortillas. Now, the tacos are a little bit on the smallish side so you'll have to order more if you're a big eater. I'm a "medium" eater, so three were more than enough. I have to say that I was looking forward to the #2 the most since it was supposed to be pulled/shredded, but it turned out to be my least favorite for the afternoon. The tortillas themselves were a little too room temperature (e.g., not steaming hot), and the meat was dry. I will say that even though the tortillas weren't steaming hot, they were still good and freshly made. The chicken taco was something I could take or leave but my favorite, albeit the meat was a little dry too, was the #9. I love me some pork and I especially love me some pork with pineapple. The Rusty Taco (#9) was definitely my favorite and I'd be most happy to run by Rusty's again. Overall, it was a pretty good dining experience: We got there early, and were in and out in 30 minutes flat. Now, there were some other folks that had come in and ordered long before we did who were still waiting for their orders by the time we'd finished eating. Now, from what Rusty's friend was telling us, they kept running around of the prepped food for the more popular tacos, which is probably why some folks were still waiting. My guess is that because this place just opened, they're going to experience some growing pains over the first couple of weeks. I'll be happy to try them out again soon. Went to eat here to try their tacos and it wasn't even that great...one of their tacos I tried was the roasted pork taco. One bite and I had to spit it out..the cheese they put on there was gross. The tortilla was hard and not even good. The other taco I had was the fajita one and it wasn't as bad as the pork. It was edible. I still think fuel city tacos are the best. They are authentic even though it's a little ghetto selling tacos inside a gas station. Line is crazy long even at 2 am. I have to agree with Brett's review. We went later around 1:45 so I didn't have a hard time finding a parking spot. The line was long but really fast. The tacos are a little bit bigger than fuel city. The ambience is really nice. If you sit inside you still get the breeze from outside because they have garage windows that open up to the outside. This location used to be a brake shop so you still have that vibe. Tons of outside seating available for those nice hot summer days. And they have beer and margaritas. Both affordable at 2.50, 2.50 and 5.00 dollars. I really think in the end what will save this place is the outside patio area. I ordered the fish taco (grilled) and the baja shrimp taco. My friend had the pork taco and the brisket taco. The grilled fish taco was just ok. The cabbage didn't add a lot to it. In fact I think it made it worse. It lacked flavor overall for me. The baja shrimp taco was a little better. I liked the spicy sauce that came on it. The pork and brisket tacos both lacked flavor as well. I think it would help if they added onion, cilantro and jalapeno as toppings like Fuel City. The chips and salsa were pretty good. I will definitely give them another shot and hope they work out some of the flavor issues. So all in all I would say it is OK and worth another try. read more

There are not too many places you can get in and get out having eaten a couple of tacos, chips and salsa and an ice cold beer with only spending under 8 bucks. With a great vibe, this little joint does it right. Their fish/shrimp tacos can be a little tiny, but their only $2! And most others are much more packed with meaty goodness. Rusty Taco was OKAY. Basically, I think of this joint as a "last-minute, I don't feel like cooking and this is cheap fare" kind of place. OR, in our case on Saturday, the parking lot to Start (next door, where we were trying to go) was royally clogged so we decided to go here. This place may look like an old gas station but let me tell you they have delicious tacos aaaaaand they are super cheap! They have a variety of breakfast tacos too -which are served all day I might add. It's got a great patio so when it's nice wether I love sitting outside on their picnic tables. They probably have more outdoor seating than indoor seating. It's a great place to come for breakfast lunch or dinner! They also serve beer and margaritas so you can hang out all night :) Most of their tacos are served on corn tortillas but you can always change it to flour. They are pretty generous with the toppings that come on the tacos which is awesome because who doesn't want a nice helping of pico on their taco?! They also have three sauces you can add to your tacos and the orange one has quite the kick. The red is pretty mild and similar to their salsa. If you get any salsa, queso, or guac it comes with unlimited fresh chips! They are soo good when they are hot! read more

This will be one of the more unusual reviews, since I'm reviewing what I did not get vs. what I did. Stopped by for initial attempt Friday, 7/30, was 10:01 according to my watch (and phone, car clock, but I digress)...patio half full with patrons, checked the hours on the door (Friday open until 11:00); walked in, no one at terminal but we perused the menu....dude bringing in chairs said "oh, we might be closed, but you need to check with her" (her being cashier on laptop just out of view). So, to my somewhat surprise, she said "sorry, we're closed"....boom. That's it. I did one of the look down at watch look back at her gestures; saw that staff was wrapping up food, so no banter about them checking clocks (a snarky "did you know Dallas observes daylight savings time" sounded good at the time, but of course, that's counter-productive). So, lesson learned...attempted to get some relatively 'late' night tacos and hours of operation, I guess, are just guidelines. FAIL. I enjoyed my summertime stop at Rusty Taco. Accompanied with good, fun-loving company - I scarfed down three of their miniature tacos generously doused in all three of their signature, spicy sauces. There is not much left to the imagination with the set-up: it's a renovated gas-station with an expansive patio with ample seating and those quintessential 'Texas' attributes. Or at least how my mind registers 'Texas' decor. Think gravel patio, used Corona bottles serving as salt and papper dispensers, Corona branded beer boxes that, and whimsical Vaquero iron statues. The service is simple. You order at the counter and they bring you your food or call your name. The waitress was helpful and guided us to the restaurant's favorite tacos. She even prevented me from ordering just one taco as they are the size of your palm. After a tough time deciding what to order I finally landed on the Rajas Tacos - grilled veggies, poblano peppers, mushrooms, onions, queso fresco, the grilled fish taco, and the Black Bean taco - adorned with queso fresco, and a magical blend of peppers and spices. I'm kind of saddened by all of the poor reviews this place has gotten... Maybe I just go there on their good days? The only taco that disappointed me was the grilled fish taco that was dry as heck. Otherwise, everything I've gotten there was been juicy, tasty and scarfed down quite ravenously. I spent a nice chunk of the summer sitting around the pool, munching Rusty Tacos and sipping beer and margaritas. Yeah, they're not the BEST tacos every, but they're not as overpriced as some places and I've always had great service there. My gf and I use to really dig this place. We stopped in last Saturday before the St. Patty's parade to eat breakfast... big mistake. We both got food poisoning from the chorizo tacos. Looking back it makes sense because it looked to me like the cooks were busy watching the runners pass by then focusing on the grill. I'd had everything on the menu in previous visits, and for the most part it was always tasty. I would rate it lower, but my subsequent visits were always satisfactory. Yah - meh same as others' sentiments of "great location, looks fun, fun patio, funky chic aesthetic" yaddas - I've been there once and considering how many come-and-go restaurants there are in Dallas, a place has to have a bit of initial "wow-bam" factor- especially to be a taco place RIGHT NEXT to Desperados Tacos (a Dallas cult favorite MEXICAN AND TACO PLACE) so anyway - it still looked half like an oil and lube place inside - which I thought was a positive - because afterall, tacos are _street food_ and a lot of places make too big of a deal of tacos IMHO (btw if you have never had the Fuel City tacos experience - it is a must-do for Dallas tacos) so anyway- at this Rusty Taco place I was underwhelmed overall the food wasn't great, considering such a heavily Tex-Mex-y place like Dallas - for me, it also had too much of a fast-food place sterility... like no one cared whether the place was there or not (customers, employees alike), other than that it is a dispensary for some cheap and edible things in a convenient location. It seems on the verge of being a comfy funky yummy taco joint, but it's sure not yet recommended for one seeking edible substances that are overall unremarkable but relatively healthy and convenient - and beer - unless you go to Parkit Market if I were to recommend anything to the restauranteurs: salsa/toppings bar - and get some real "wow" factor to the food flavorings kudos for the corn tortillas read more

I've only been to Rusty Taco for breakfast, and after really long runs. I would say it's another typical taco shop in the Dallas area without much differentiating it from other taco shops. I personally think that all the taco places in Dallas are fantastic, so THAT'S NOT A BAD THING! For breakfast, I had the egg/potato/cheese and the egg/chorizo/cheese tacos. They were pretty standard and good. One of my friends had the jalapeno sausage/egg/cheese taco, and it looked really tasty. I liked their selection of beers, too. Me likes: 1. The converted garage thing is cool. 2. Picnic style tables are great for big groups. 3. Service/cash rigister folks are friendly 4. Beer on ice. Decent selection too for beer snobbery. Me no likes: 1. Dry Meat 2. Dry tortilla 3. High prices for the (I can get wayyyyy better tacos for less than $1.50) 4. The line in which you have to stand in. Very inconveniently placed next to the doors. My overall impression is this place is for SMU kids needing something else other than cafeteria food. It's not really meant for someone that is choosy about where they spend their money. Hit up a real Taqueria. I'm not coming back unless the large group drags me there again. read more

They weren't kidding, the tacos are rusty...this is my second bad experience at this location. Workers always seem to have a terrible attitude and/or be under the influence. The chicken looked and tasted like it had been stored in the fridge for days. Hoping I don't get sick even though I left a whole bunch on the plate. read more

Cheap, bland tacos. If your price conscious then give it a try otherwise save your money and go to Fuel City Taco. I wasn't impressed at all the brisket tacos lacked flavor, the fish tacos had more slaw than fish. read more

So I live by a Rusty Taco and work next to the other location. You would think I'd be all Rusty Taco'd out but this is honestly such a quick and convenient place to grab a bite I'm a usual here. I can say there is a big difference from this location to the Harry Hines location in customer service; this location is more busy and the service isn't as great. There are only two things that are better about this location: 1. They have one of those flavor machines to mix in with your soda choice 2. The patio is awesome ( I love the fan!) The food is just as good as the other location though! read more

Okay, I was debating on whether or not to up my review to four stars, and after a couple more trips I can say I think I must. And here's why. I'm a big fan of reviewing a place for what it's good at. No, these aren't the greatest tacos in the universe. But that's okay. Not every place can be Fuel City. As long as you see Rusty Taco for what it is, it's actually a really cool spot. Food-wise: these tacos won't change your life, but some of them are good. The Baja Shrimp taco is my consistent favorite, as a matter of fact I'm having a craving for one right now. The fish and chicken were also good, the brisket and beef fajita, I've had better. One of the friends I was with said the pork was really good, but I'm not sure I trust his opinions. So take that for what it's worth. But here's the thing. You're getting some cheap tacos. Cheap bottled beer. $1 chips and salsa. Nom-o-riffic habanero sauce. And a pretty nice little patio/people-watching spot (as long as it's not too hot out). The bf and I grabbed a lazy early dinner there the other day...3 tacos each, chips and salsa and a couple of beers for about $15. Totally chill time. Awesome guys in khakis that didn't get the memo about fanny packs. Really chill, laid-back vibe. The patio is dog-friendly and they'll bring out treats and water. I wasn't going to bump Rusty Taco up to four stars but I've found myself wanting to go there more and more. It's definitely a perfect place to sit around, have a couple beers and chat it up with some friends in a casual environment. Just came from the pool and look like Swamp Thing's sunburned sister? No problem. Wearing your boyfriend's gym shorts and a wifebeater because your circa 1976 washing machine has locked your clothes in it's vicious grasp again? Come on in! I love unpretentious places, and I really feel like that's what Rusty Taco is. I'm rooting for this place. I really am. Shame on you, Yelpers for being so hard on poor little Rusty Taco. Do yourself a favor, and go get some cheap Baja Shrimp Tacos, chips and salsa and a couple of beers and hang out on the patio (maybe once it's not 100+ degrees, but still). Sorry, all you Rusty Taco lovers, I have to say "meh". Ordered the following $2 breakfast tacos: Brisket, Cheese & Egg. - Tasted more like Roast Beef and Egg waved over a slice of cheese. - 1 Star Chorizo, Cheese & Egg. - Tasted more like Sloppy Joe and Egg waved over the same slice. - 1 Star Smoked Jalapeño Sausage, Cheese & Egg. - The sausage was amazing! Didn't notice or care about the cheese (or egg) quotient. - 4 Stars Had the green tangy (medium) and orange habanero (hot) sauces, both of which were good (not "meh" and not "great"). The tacos were slightly bigger than what you would expect for a $1 taco and about 1/2 the size (and ingredients) of what you would expect in a $4.50 taco, so the $2 price tag is probably right. I will be back once more to discover whether the Smoked Jalapeño is the exception proving the rule or (hopefully) there are other items on the menu up to its level of deliciousness. If so, they will deserve a much higher rating. If not, I won't be back a third time and they are definitely still a 2 star in my view. read more
