I love Rusty Taco. The atmosphere is pretty awesome and relaxed. The servers are very friendly and helpful. The shrimp tacos are the BEST. I just wish the portions were bigger thats why I only gave 4 stars. You gotta buy like 3 to fill you up but they're only 2 bucks a pop so it's not TOO bad. Their queso is good depending on the day. I am a taco fan and Rusty Taco delivers wonderful flavors. The steak is juicy and packed full of delight. The "Rusty Taco" taco was surprising. It comes with pineapple chunks, which one would think it may ruin a taco..but it gave the taco a very refreshing flavor. The margarita was the star of the show. Perfect mix of tequilla...rendering it STRONG! Was hesitant to order the frozen drink because it's typically weak at other establishments, but Rusty Taco did right by me. The atmosphere was very open and clean. It's located in an old gas station, making it very eclectic. They do have a taco eating contest, which 35 tacos so far is the record. Not sure the prize. Rusty Taco is your basic taco joint that serves Tex-Mex tacos quickly and deliciously. Not the most amazing taco I've ever had but perfect for a filling, tasty, and quick lunch. I've also tried their margaritas, which are just OK, not amazing. A tip: if you want flour tortillas (which you do), you need to ask--otherwise, they'll be served with corn tortillas. read more

First timer to Rusty Taco and I'm amazed with everything. Walking in and being greeted by the cashier at the front with a big smile brightened my day! The place looks so cozy and welcoming, I really enjoyed having lunch here. I ordered a #2 which is a Roasted Pork Taco rubbed with coarse pepper, sea salt and garlic, then roasted and served with cotija cheese and pickled red onions and a Brisket, Egg & Cheese Taco. We clearly ordered by the numbers from their posted menu, I got my own bottled soda and my friend ordered a frozen margarita. So far so good. The chips were extra, so we passed as we just wanted a snack anyway. But charging for chips is minus 1 star automatic. We ordered 5 different tacos, the first tray only had 4, so we asked which one did they miss, they couldn't tell and that was because it was the wrong order, so they just put two more tacos on top. So we paid for 5, got 7 and they still didn't get it right. Minus 1 star So I started eating, the meats were cold, room temperature at best. Not much to recommend the various ones I sampled; the beef was bland, the pork and chicken dry, the shrimp skimpy. Minus 1 more Then I got what appeared to be a manger's attention, I briefly recounted the screwed up order and cold fillings and he laughed. Rusty Taco was a place I have had on my taco radar for a little while now. It hasn't been my number one place to try, but being directly on the way back to Richardson from Lower Greenville one afternoon, I decided it was time to indulge. From my perspective, I would say Rusty Taco deserves 3.5 or 3.75 stars, hence giving them 4 to bump up their average. They have a pretty cool vibe, and the patio will easily be a go-to spot once God turns off the pre-heat and starts baking us in a couple months. The tacos themselves are pretty decent. I only had the brisket and the trademark Rusty as I was dining solo. The brisket was fantastic. They cooked it in a way to let the natural fats of the meat provide all the flavor without dousing it in BBQ sauce or copious spices. The Rusty taco was pretty good, but not my favorite in comparison. What the brisket achieved in understatement, the Rusty taco failed on with hyper-flavoring. The chips and salsa, at a cool $1, were a great complement to the tacos. You can see the gorgeous little chunks of sea salt glistening on the crispy triangles. The tomato-heavy salsa is a solid partner, but not anything that will send you to the Mensa soda machine to squelch an inferno in your mouth. They have three sauces at each table to spice it up! Green tomatillo, a red that is medium than the more orange sauce is habanero. The habanero sauce was diluted super watery and not at as spicy as I remember. I love spicy and that was my favorite thing about this place. I even checked all the bottles in the fridge most of them were watery with an exception of a few in the back but by then my taco had already broke in half from the amount the water in the sauce. Granted they had other sauce which didn't seem as watery as the habanero. Usually the tacos have 2 corn tortillas for durability but either they forgot or were running low because I ended up eating my tacos with a fork. The tacos weren't as great as I remembered either. The pulled pork was loaded with pickled onions and I think from the taste could have been parmesan cheese. The chicken fajita taco was delicious. The service fast and friendly. I have been eating at this Rusty Taco since it opened. I watched them re-invent a gas station and turn it into a place where you can get a great margarita on the rocks with salt, queso and chips that is superb and tacos that are chock-full of yummy meat and toppings AND are reasonably priced! If my husband and I hit this place during Happy Hour (as we did tonight) we can get 3 margaritas, chips, great guacamole, the best queso in Dallas, and 4 tacos (brisket, fried chicken, fajita chicken and fajita beef) for $30. This is our go-to for great tacos and queso and is a regular stop - we are so glad the Rusty is close to neighborhood. Tonight was the first time however, where there were a shortage of folks taking orders - guys from the grill kept it going, but I hope the great food AND service continues! Anyway, I was pleased to find a parking spot along the side patio and then pleased again to not find this place packed. I was not pleased to watch a young girl get frustrated and flustered trying to squeeze daddy's SUV into the spot next to me. She backed in and backed out at an odd angle half a dozen times WITHOUT ever moving her steering wheel! She rubbed up on the bumper of my car but luckily no damage. I would have went ape shit on her ass. Thankfully some guy eating on the patio walked over and talked her into how to move her steering wheel to pull in at a wider angle to be able to park. Jeebus. I bet she was sweaty. I ordered 3 tacos, the #7, shrimp, #8 fish, and #9 pork (the signature rusty taco, most like al pastor). The wait for our food wasn't bad at all and they serve each taco in a cardboard tray thingie and then place that on a circular, lined tray. I ate what I thought was my fried shrimp first, but it ended up being my fried fish. After eating both, they weren't very distinguishable. There was more shredded cabbage (red) than fish or shrimp and then a smidge of sauce. The pieces of protein were crisp I suppose, but were probably more batter than anything. The Rusty taco was somewhat better, but still. It came along with a couple of chunks of pineapple but the actual meat it self had a texture I'm not quite used to. Its flavor was not special and I expected a nice burst from the pineapples but it fell flat. As far as salsas, I tried the verde on my pastor. It wasn't particularly great, just average run of the mill. I also tried the pale orangeish one that REEKED of garlic and had a very strong spicy kick to it. Wasn't really a fan. I'm not a huge fan of the smokey red, so I didn't bother. Overall, I think its cool that yuppie white people have a hip place to get mexican style tacos, since many may fear legit Taquerias or gas station taco stands. They are fru-fru tacos. I have a very long and loving relationship with tacos. I went to college in San Antonio and a bean, bacon and cheese taco was a sure cure for a hang-over, especially if followed by a nap and some more beer. There were taco places all over. So, tacos are easy. Tacos are cheap. Tacos are God's food. How do you screw up tacos? Seriously, it's filling in a crispy corn tortilla or a soft, flour tortilla. Here's how - you make fru-fru tacos. Fried fish with cabbage. Fajitas that are not grilled strips of skirt steak but chunks of some other cut, dripping with grease. All served with a garden's worth of cilantro on a soft, white corn tortilla. At least they're small, so you're not disappointed as long as if it were a full-size taco. Also, for the number of staff, service seems very slow. I'm still working this out in my head. Breakfast tacos here are terrible. Their eggs are disgusting and they have no idea how to make/prepare a flour tortilla, they are always rock hard and completely unbendable/inedible.
