Played it for the 1st time and found the course to be well kept but quite challenging. The greens were in bad shape because they had just been aerated. $20 per cart fee is very high for a weekday afternoon. Also had to start on the back 9 which is not the best way to start this course. read more

Course was in pretty good shape and the greens were quick especially when putting downhill. A walkable course but some long distance treks from green to the next tee. The only drawback was the pace of play with groups sometimes playing from the wrong tees making for a long day on the course. Nonetheless it was a great day on the course (when isn't it?). read more

Always a tough track. Absolutely love the first few holes. Looks wide open but watch out. Plenty of deep bunkers and special areas where you cannot retrieve your ball from. All marked off. Front nine much easier then the challenging back nine. The greens can be treacherous. Fast and true. Good luck. read more

I just finished my first round at Rustic, and it won't be my last. This is one of the best courses in the greater Los Angeles area, and definitely one of the best values. This course is really all about short game. The fairways are just so wide and forgiving that it's really hard to loose balls on most tee shots. It's when you start attacking the greens that you're game will really be tested. The landing areas are all quite large, and the short cut is just as putt-able as the actual green. What makes the greens challenging is that they're all heavily undulated and fast. If you're unlucky enough to hit a green-side bunker you'll definitely have your work cut out for you getting out. The lips can be quite high, and the sand rather compacted. The thing I loved the most about Rustic Canyon is just how many options you have around the course. Almost all of the holes give you multiple landing areas depending on how aggressive you'd like to be. This is a course that can be played a number of different ways which is very refreshing when compared to many of the other courses in L.A.. And don't forget... This is a WALKING FRIENDLY course, which I highly recommend. It's very flat and beautiful. Take your time to take it in and get some exercise in the process. :) read more

Rustic Canyon Golf Course - View of #9 green. - Golf Near Me - Moorpark, California

I have loved this golf course since it first opened. It's a wonderfully designed and challenging course. I have to say, though , that I won't be back until they replace the pin sheets or use colored flags. It's one of the most difficult courses to gauge where the pins are due to the extended collars. Although I walked today one our players used a cart. The cart GPS also wasn't set up to give yardages to the pin placements. It was a very bad idea to do away with that much needed information. Rustic Canyon, let me know when you reinstate the pin placement system.Until then you have lost my business, read more

Great course but the staff / "private owner" (which they always blame all the "rules" on) are easily the most greedy of all the courses in the Ventura / LA area. We live nearby and our Junior Son plays there all the time, plays tournaments there, takes instruction from a Pro there and attends an Academy there. This course literally charges for EVERYTHING. Are you an adult who needs to simply drive the cart for your Junior? Yep, plan on paying a full green and cart fee to these bozos just to accompany your Jr on the course! Are you a parent who wants to be a spectator at your Junior's golf tournament? Yep, ONLY at Rustic Canyon will they enjoy charging you a full green fee just to watch your kid! My son and our family are regulars at many courses from OC to Santa Barbara and this is the only course which price gouges all the families who are just trying to bring their Juniors out to grow in the game. Also, they blame it on "everyone has to pay because of insurance and liability". That's BS. Charging someone a fee or not does not relieve the business of any liability whatsoever. If the course really has a concern with "liability" then just have the parent sign a waiver. Nope, it's not liability at all and we all know that. It's greed. Every. Single. Time. We bring our Son out to this course, we literally prep ourself for a "lecture" from the Pro Shop staff on all their rules. Courses like this are exactly why it is so hard to grow the game with this next generation. Ridiculous. read more

This is a great golf course. Hard and challenging. But now a days it's hard to get a decent tee times. Since the pandemic started, there are a lot of golfers out there. You have to get on the web site at the time to get an early time. If not, it's after 12 read more

Rude employees. Yelled at me on tee one, "if I don't like it I can leave" the gm came out, told us to keep up w group. Hole 9, accused me of bringing beer in. Hole #11 called police, lied said my group was drunk and disorderly. Removed us from course, and given a life time ban. No crime committed. 30 years on golf course's never had a more humilating experience. read more

I've played this course several times in past years, and it is one of the best tracks in So Cal, but based on other reviews here, looks like staff and poor customer service is just ruining the place. Last time played, I did notice the staff was dismissive and acted like they were doing golfers a favor by letting them play there. My mens club wanted to go back next spring for a tournament, but it is impossible to get a hold of anyone. Email form doesn't work on website, and I've literally called five times in the last week or so. They put you on hold and then please try again later. It's okay. Don't need to try again. It's a pity because it is a great track, but I wouldn't be surprised if this place is closed in a couple of years at this rate. read more

Yea this place sucks. Not sure how it was rated a top course but definitely not one of the tops these days. BEWARE - Carts are cart path only and they still charge 16$ per person. read more

This is strictly about the staff. Please, if you don't enjoy interacting with people without being condescending or just plain rude, find another place to work. This place deserves better. The golf is amazing there is no debating that. The guys in the pro shop were completely condescending to 3 of my Hispanic friends until they figured out me the white guy was with them. I also don't know what's worse the cart girl calling our group "scum of the earth" for not buying beers from her or the "we don't do that here" bullshit in the pro shop. We drove 2 hours for that ...... Do better read more

Nice course design ruined by crazy greens. Flat, links style course. Interesting options for the drive on several fairways. Generally good condition; right now the fairways are "dormant" but I would call them under watered and dry. Greens are hard and unreceptive to many shots. I had a few bounce off the green. Bunkers were in good shape with good sand. If your shot misses the small target on many greens, 3 and 4 putts are common. Feels like miniature golf; kept looking for a clown or windmill. Didn't enjoy the round even playing from the whites. Won't be going back until I'm a single handicap. read more

Had a tee time recently in the morning and it was a five hour round. Not a marshal in site. Such a shame that management obviously doesn't care about pace of play. It's a really great course but I can't say I'll be back soon. What a shame! read more

This is my favorite golf course so far in the LA area. It has a varied, challenging layout, and the views and setting are spectacular. It really feels very secluded and with nature. Very quiet and peaceful. The (hellish) bunkers seem natural and the whole course just blends in so well with the surrounding environment. I saw a rattlesnake here a couple times ago on the cart path so watch out for that. Sure, the greens are diabolical and you will probably three putt a bunch, but this is a really fun place to play with surprisingly forgiving fairways - you have a very wide landing zone on many holes. This course demands accuracy on approach shots and a good short game or you can really get eaten up. I love it. The pricing here is great too - it varies quite a bit from weekend morning to weekday afternoons (as it should given demand) and you can get on for a nice price if you are free at a time when they are not usually busy. Golfnow has some deals occasionally as well. They removed the GPS from the carts some time in the last year or so, don't know what is up with that?? Lame. read more

Great golf course with tons of personality. The front side is great with three par 5's and three par 3''s. Number 3 and number 7 may be two of the best short par 4 around. The back nine is a great test of golf. Enjoy read more

Although I love this golf course, on Saturday Feb 15, 2020, they may have overbooked two tourneys in the AM. Consequently we played 18 in 6:20. My friends and I play this course regularly and each has purchased Rustic's Senior Card which entitles us to a round of golf and cart rental for a total cost of $41 per golfer on a weekday. We usually play on a Thursday, but July 4 fell on a Thursday. We thought the course would either be closed or would charge a holiday fee, so we opted to play on Friday, July 5. We made our reservation as usual and AT NO TIME were we advised that holiday rates would apply. When we showed up on Friday, July 5 and presented our Senior Cards we were told that they would not honor the card. Instead of the $41.00 we would normally pay, the charge was $85.00! This is a deceptive practice in my opinion. July 5 is not a holiday. Would they not honor the Senior Card on Monday, July 8 as well, claiming it is part of the holiday weekend? It is incumbent upon any business to be clear and upfront when they do not intend to honor discount cards they have sold, for any reason. Had we been advised, in advance, that we were going to be charged more than double the usual rate, ON A NON-HOLIDAY DATE, we would have chosen to play elsewhere. Not the proper way to conduct business. read more

Not that great of a course. Some dirt golf cart paths (got all dusty from the cart in front of me.) won't let you on certain fairways with carts and won't let you in the parking lot to load and unload. Much better courses in Southern California and Ventura County. read more

This course is # 16 in the top 100 in California. It has got to be the best deal for the $. It is a tough layout and always in good shape. I play this course as much as I can and have never had any bad dealings with any of the staff in the pro shop, or the restaurant. There is no public course that can beat this in Ventura county. It is a links-style course with many false front greens and the greens are fast and some are very undulating. This is a test of golf and will put some people off, but it is a beautiful layout and the best bang for your $ you can get. I take anyone that comes in from out of town here, and it always takes our lunch- but it is an amazing time. read more

Interesting reading some of the reviews. We play here weekly, sometimes twice a week. While the greens sometimes seem like a miniature golf course, the overall experience is excellent NEVER have had a problem with any of the staff. Always very friendly. Links type course, beautiful setting. Only real complaint is no marshals on the course. Sometimes get players who think they are pros and can hold things up read more

We absolutely love this course and everyone here. This has been our home away from home for all of Covid. After many many golfing trips to Scotland, we know links golf. Rustic Canyon is very reminiscent of the best of Scottish links. Just imagine the ocean over the little hill and a bern or two running crossways. It's a gorgeous course, especially at sunset. Everyone is kind and respectful. We've loved all our single playing partners as well. Good place. (But don't come. We don't want it to get crowded. Terrible place...) read more

Judging by the other reviews, I guess I must be spoiled by good courses because this is by far one of the worst and poorly managed course in So. Cal. The only thing missing is the swinging candy cane and the windmills. The fairways are nasty brown and contaminated. Greens are OK. Driving range charges $5.00 for a SMALL (extra small) bucket of balls. Water coolers on the course are always empty then they make you pay for the over priced beverage cart that you are lucky to see twice in a round. I guess texting away under the trees pays better. This is by far now wheres close to an $86.00 round for golf. It might be worth $40. Do yourself a favor. Take your money elsewhere. Oh yea! Fire the Marshal, if there was one. They do not regulate the idiots that have no golf etiquette, which means they encourage the hackers to ruin it for the others. Fire everybody and start over!!!! read more

Ugliest possible golf course that is still playable. I asked for a wet towel and they replied with " sorry this is not a country club" Worst value for $75/round. The facilities are comparable to an inner city municipal course. Came with a group of 8. We all had lunch before our round. Everyone agreed that what they ordered was not very good. Food is comparable to high school cafeteria food. Not good at all, but edible. read more

First, I got a note from Sabrina, who said I was way too nice in my first review. She frankly would have given this place a -1 star if she could. I agree that I was too nice. I was trying to give the credit for past performances, but really I should have reviewed just on that performance. I revisited Rustic Canyon on Saturday with two dudes from work. We had an 11am tee time and didn't get out until about 11:20. Strike 1. The first hole moved along nicely, but when we got to #2, the waiting started. And we waited on every hole going forward. Strike 2. At the turn, we stopped for snacks and drinks. I tried to get a hot dog, but the girl didn't have any available and it would take 10-15 minutes to cook. Sure we had the time, since we were stacked up anyway. But I passed and had some chips instead. Strike 3. Golf is supposed to be played in 4 hours. Many places have a pace of play that is as little as 3:30, and as much as 4:30. Rustic Canyon's pace of play seems to be 5:30, since it took us 5:40 to finish. Unacceptable Rustic Canyon. Strike 4. Until they get some staff who give a crap and manage the course better, I think I'm done. I've tried and tried, but I just can't stand slow play and the "whatever" attitude. I highly recommend you pass and go to Moorpark Country Club, Malibu, Lost Canyons, or go to one of the muni's like Simi Hills, Encino or Balboa. PS: The photos that are attached to this business on Yelp aren't representative of the golf course. Ya know why? They don't have PEOPLE stacked up waiting to hit their ball! So I marked them as NOT HELPFUL! read more

Mucho Respect for this Golf Course. My all time favorite public course I've played for under 80 bucks. Golf Digest's Top 10 Public Course in California. Not quite a Pebble Beach, Spy Glass or Spanish Bay in terms of aesthetics or prestige, but I will throw this track in there with the Trump National's, PGA West, and Aviara in terms of how enjoyable this course is to play. There are not too many Links Style courses in California, especially ones that allow for every type of skilled golfer to enjoy. The layout is challenging enough for those single digit handicappers who want to play from the tips, and forgiving enough for those who are just learning the game, you won't lost your ball every other shot. My favorite aspect about this golf course (myself being an 8 HC) is that you can get super creative while planning your shots. You have large enough greens, usually running at about a 12 on a dry/hot day, to attack the pin, and you also have fairways that fade into the green if you feel like keeping it low and running the ball up 60 yards to the flag as well. If you are visiting LA, take the 40-minute drive north to play this course, you won't regret it. I would have given this place 5 stars but they really do need to hire some more cheerful people to work in the pro shop, everyone else is great! read more

I just walked off the course 6 hours and 20 minutes after teeing off. I live this place but that is ridiculous!

Hands down my favorite place to play golf in the area I consider Rustic my home course. I fell in love with this course when it opened up for play in 2002. You have to applaud a new course that actually favors walkers. This course is also challenging as well as very unique to the area. The greens are surrounded by very large aprons, kind of like a links course. You end up putting a lot because the aprons are cut so short. Course is always in great shape. The staff is really friendly and have been there a while - a testament to how much they like it. I don't go there to practice, just play. This is also still the best deal in the area, despite the fact that they've raised their rates each year for the last 3 years. 5 of 5 stars. read more

Really like the golf course here. It's rare you find a true Scottish links type golf course anywhere in the country, but especially here in Cali. Greens are trickly, lots of birdies on the front, not so many on the closing holes(especially 14, 16, 17, and 18. Price point is right, GPS is very outdated and needs upgrading. Range adequate but not good. My real issue here is management. THEY SUCK! They couldn't care less about the golfer, don't wanna hear any suggestions or input, and I guess what comes with a county run course, a bunch of civil serpents who can be a complete failure at the job and still have one. Would love to see a real operator here. Pro shop is barren and awful, and the food needs some serious attention! read more

Played Sat 15 Feb, round took 6.5hrs which is the longest I have experienced in over 30 years of playing golf all over the world. Course set up / conditions were not particularly tough. The reason for the slow play seemed to be a team match ahead for the Rustic Canyon Mens Club - which certainly included players who should know better. To add insult to injury, the bar/grill was closed after we finally got off the course just after 5pm. The course is justifiably regarded as being one of the best public tracks in Southern California. However they do not use Marshalls, and after playing several times I have come to the conclusion it is just poorly managed. Guess the quality of the course guarantees revenue so nobody needs to work too hard to earn it. Such a shame. read more

Played here this past saturday with 3 other friends. This course is a links style course. Facilities are first rate...nothing to spectacular, but enough to make you feel comfortable. Friendly staff and golf carts came with GPS, which is nice, since this course is long. Greens play fairly true, however are very fast. You can put from just abuot anywhere on the fringe, so practice your 20 footers before playing. Course of play was a little slow, but in Southern CA, you just get used to 5 hour rounds. Great course and will definitely play again. read more

I'm a little conflicted about writing this. The complaints I have may not be within their power to correct as the course is in a conservation area and they are probably restricted from making changes to the landscape. The course has been in nice shape the last few times I played and the staff is friendly and efficient. Pros: Excellent chipping and sand trap practice areas. Great atmosphere up in the hills above Moorpark and away from development Cons: The driving range balls are simply terrible. The only replace balls when they split. About half the balls in their bins are so worn and old that the sun has actually faded them to a new color. The greens on some of the holes are ridiculous. They either very large or just poorly shaped/contoured The distance between holes (especially on the back 9) can be daunting if you're walking. Overall, I'd recommend the course for accomplished golfers but many high-handicappers would probably get discouraged by this course. read more

Beware!! Do not hold a tournament here as they do not allow spectators to watch their kids play. Not one to usually complain about a business online but this beautiful golf course, just great track, needs to tighten up on customer service in the pro shop. My 8 year old son and I were treated like animals by the manager and a couple of other workers because we disagreed with having to pay a greens fees when the intention was for me to spectate/caddie to prepare him for his us kids tournament the next day. That policy should be disclosed to a potential customer during the process of having to register online and book the tee time in the first place. When people drive from good distances to play there every once in awhile they shouldn't be met with an ultimatum to either pay or leave. We don't deserve that. We could have made other arrangements in the vicinity. Moorpark, Tierra Rejada et cetera. Just as nice tracks but with very similar spectator policies to almost every other golf course we have ever been to. And try to be more accommodating. My son and I would prefer to not have to pair up with loud, chubby cigar smokers at 4:30 in the afternoon. When the 4:40 time doesn't have to. Just no respect for the customer experience anymore. Pay our outrageous price/insurance policy /lie or else. $120 for 13-14 holes for an 8 year old isn't going to blow anyone out of the water but it is going to cause conflict and isn't a very good value. And the pro shop guys, especially the manager need to relay there message professionally. Or online so people can make other arrangements at any other golf course... read more

This was my first round of golf West of the Mississippi and I am glad I chose this course to lose my Mountain/Desert golf virginity. Now I know there are better desert courses (honestly I do not know if it qualifies as a true desert course) and mountain courses but I really appreciated all it had to offer. It is open, wide, and undulating like a links course (it shouldn't be considered that because the wind doesn't have a chance to get blowing like an open terrain course). Being a Midwesterner I was taken aback by some of the beautiful vistas on the tee boxes. It was definitely a very fun track without being gimmicky, which can be a hard line to draw. Course backed up to over 7,000 yards but on many of the holes it didn't play that long because it was fast and firm. From my limited experience the staff are polite and helpful.
