    Stretching the taffy.
    Brittany M.

Such a cute little store right on the main street. As we were waking up they were making and stretching the taffy in the front of the store. It's fun to watch them making it from the street. They have so many different flavors! They even have some sugar free options. I was a little disappointed that when I went they were out of some flavors. I picked out a 1/2 pound of assorted flavors and paid around $4.50. The taffy is delicious (and I'm normally not a taffy fan), but I would stop by again if I was in town.

I'm from the Northeast and love me some saltwater taffy. This, however, was just regular taffy. Still, the service was great, the taffy flavors were pretty unique, and the taffy itself was enough to satisfy my sweet tooth.

As to the truffles and stuff we bought - we did not have that concern because they did not last long. YUM!

I really want to give this a higher rating, but I can't…read more Pro's: 1. If you're tourist, its proximity to the motels on Mt. Rushmore road is handy as you'll drive right by it if you're going to Mt. Rushmore. 2. If you're a total chocolate addict and MUST have some chocolate, it's quick and easy here. 3. The staff are very nice. 4. They do have very, very cute gifts. But, as a chocolate snob, I don't taste the best ingredients in their truffles. It tastes like there's some sort of emulsifier/hardner in their chocolate, paraffin? Artificial ingredients or stabilizers, preservatives? Not the best brand of chocolate to begin with, slightly too hard for the true consistency a Truffle should be. If you're wanting a quick treat, or a cute gift for someone, this is the place to go to, but if you're a serious chocolate lover or Truffle snob, it's worth the 45 minute drive north to Deadwood and go to Chubby Chipmonk instead. They might have fabulous caramels, or brittle, or other goodies, but not the Truffles.

My husband and I spent oodles of dollars there over the years. I have since moved from the area, and on a recent visit "back home," I was dismayed at the changes to what used to be a charming little store, and a real gem in the Black Hills. The business was recently sold, and the new owners have turned it into a pitiful version of the charming business it was for years and years. They got rid of all of the vintage antiques. They now devote almost half of the store to fabric and quilting supplies. It's ironic that they carry such a vast amount of kitschy made-in-China crap, especially when so much of it touts ultra-right conservative, "patriotic" sentiment. I left the store feeling disappointed, offended, and just downright sad. Because I still have family in the Black Hills, I will come back often for visits, but will never spend another dollar in the store I once loved.

We bought a slightly off-color placard, and while chatting with the proprietor, learned that the saying was something her husband's grandmother used to say. Stop by and get the whole story!
