Driving through the Deadwood-Lead area just wasting time, we originally drove past the Chubby Chipmunk, but then decided to go back after not much else in the area was open yet. Glad we did. The interior is cozy, a little small and a little cramped with everything in there, but helpful staff and samples out to try some goodies. Lots to choose from. We actually limited ourselves to a 6 pack of truffles. There are traditional chocolate candies, but the truffles are cute. They have different designs and some are topped with edible glitter. If you're traveling around, either bring them back to wherever you're staying or get something to keep them cool if you're not going to eat them right away. read more

Did I see the Chipmunks here? Yup, I sure did! Alvin, Simon, and Theodore were all outside the shop. They were among the props outside the little Chocolate shop. If you are claustrophobic, then do not go inside the shop. There was a total of about 9 people inside the shop when we were there, and it was a bit too cramped for the limited space inside. Most of the truffles are displayed in the case at the counter. Other merchandise and chocolate is located throughout the store. They even sell Ice Cream from a local South Dakota vendor. I was tempted to purchase a pint, but they were sold out of the flavors I wanted to try. We ended up purchasing six assorted Truffles and a Chocolate bar. Everything was pretty good. My personal favorite was the New York Cheesecake flavor. I recommend dropping by this local chocolate shop if you are anywhere near Deadwood, South Dakota. How can you resist? I mentioned it to the owner, she wasn't familiar with it, so I hope she comes and checks it out! This place could be incredible only for the fact that they have a Truffle vending machine outside! Yes. A vending machine dispensing $2 truffles. I hear on some mornings when they open it's sometimes empty! This is one of those hole in the wall places that will get more popular little by little. Deadwood is a small community with nice travel appeal, I hope that the tourist trade keeps this place alive! There isn't a bad piece of chocolate in this place. Try the key lime... strawberry princess parfait.. orange with dark chocolate... I am at an airport waiting for my connecting flight and I realized I forgot my acorn shaped tin in the fridge where we were staying. Best truffles ever. Got that. Best ever. Try the deadwood toffee, moose toffee, salted caramel, root beer float, key lime, etc. You get the idea. All are great and it really depends on your tastes. They always have three truffles cut up as samples so you can taste a small selection but at a cost under $3. a truffle you can't go wrong. The only reason this gets a four and not a five star rating is because they could stand to hire a few more people at the counter during the busy season. I would never recommend that they move though as their location is charming and part of the Chubby Chipmunk experience. It's in what I'm guessing was an old 1920's era gas station, so the public part of it is where you'd pay for your gas. You can imagine how tiny that is. But that's part of its charm. The way they've got the little business decorated is adorable, with signed pictures of the HBO cast of Deadwood, the dark wood and low lighting. It's perfect. Hands down, the BEST truffles I've ever had. In fact, during the winter, I've shipped them to friends on the east coast. Yes, they're that good. They do ship, but seasonally only so the chocolates won't melt in the mail. If you're a chocolate snob, then ask to sample a few truffles. Unlike other chocolatiers, they do not use paraffin wax or other preservatives, or dry milk or other things discriminating to the palette. You can taste the butter, the cream, the high end ingredients. The counter help isn't the friendliest, but when you make something like that near perfection, a little attitude is acceptable. read more

Amazing chocolates...the truffles of course are to die for, but I especially love that all the way in the Black Hills of South Dakota this Ohio girl can get some Jeni's ice cream (look it up if you're not familiar, you'll want to become well-acquainted). CC sells Jeni's pints, and is the only place in all of South Dakota to do so. So not only can I get the most amazing truffles (coconut is by far my favorite, followed by the Calamity Patty, which is more like a deconstructed flat truffle full of caramel) I can get a piece of home in the form of amazing ice cream. Chubby Chipmunk is worth it just to stop and see the place, as the decor is super cute and kitschy. If it's not business hours, don't worry you can still get some goodies from the truffle vending machine located outside the front entrance. The owner, whose name is slipping me now, is SUCH a sweet lady...she stood and talked to us for awhile and was completely patient while my newbie friend took forever deciding what truffles she wanted to pack up and take home to her husband. In cooler months, CC will ship truffles anywhere in the US. And if you're in the rapid city area but can't make it all the way up to deadwood, they now have a second location in the Alex Johnson hotel in Rapid City. I personally prefer the old-school kitschy style of the deadwood shop, but both locations offer the chocolate truffles, patties and bars that CC is famous for. Definitely worth a stop. read more

This place is addicting. We went to visit my wife's parents for a family gathering. Her dad said that we had to try this place and he was right. You can taste the love and care that goes into making these high-end chocolate treats. In the week that we visited the Deadwood area we must have stopped by at least 6 times. If I could give negative stars I would for the staff at this establishment. After seeing a blurb on TV about Chubby Chipmunk, it was all my 4 year old could talk about when he found we'd be driving through SD on our way to CO. After driving all day, including through copious stretches of construction , we reached our destination. Dilapidated, filthy, the truffles looked OK. When the worker told us there were no restrooms, even for a child and pregnant woman who would have been paying customers, we took our business to Mountain Treats in Hill City.
