OK so my friend Jen Cowan suggested, nay, demanded, that I check out Runza. It's a fast food chain that I guess is regional and their fare is super quick and reasonably priced (even gas here is ridiculously cheap at $2.84/gal!!!!). Anyhow, I got the frings, which I thought would be some frankenstein-esque merging of friends and onion rings, but instead was both fries and onion rings mixed together, so I had to dock a star for that. Otherwise the cheese runza I got was pretty good albeit a bit greasy but hey this is fast food we're talking about. I felt that it would be a great preventative measure if you go out drinking and/or in the morning after drinking. Either way, it's an interesting stuffed bread with meat and cheese on the inside. It was kinda creepy how the bread has this incision on the bottom where I guess the insert the meat and cheese from. Anyhow, that sounds a bit gnarly but check out their corporate site to read the official PR scoop.

Yep, I had to take a picture to show the friends back in L.A. what I was so excited about.

"Try a Runza, a tasty Runza, ground beef and spices, wrapped in golden bread. There's no meal or sandwich like so you've really got to try it, it's a Runza, a meal in a bunza!" That was the jingle from their television commercials from back when I lived in Council Bluffs, and it pretty much sums up what the sandwich is. I wish they would put that ditty on their own web site, if only for nostalgia purposes. A trip back to the Midwest is just not complete without indulging in an original recipe Runza. (If you like, they have Italian and other styles there, too, but I prefer the original.) Anyway, I was back a couple of weeks ago, and as with previous trips, I was not disappointed. I do not even know where to begin to look for something that tastes like this in Los Angeles. And the girls behind the counter were very cheerful and friendly, especially after I sang the jingle for them. This is something completely different in fast service dining.

There is a dedicated parking in Council Bluffs however, it's a bit small. You may have to choose street parking for restaurant access. Both locations are open all day which offers a nice selection for mid afternoon dining. Daily specials and happy hours are available throughout the week. Check their website for details We were pleasantly greeted and quickly seated and jumped right into their selection of dips while we try to make a decision on our main meal. What I really like about their menu is they do allow for a pick two or pick three options that includes your own choice of sides. Their street corn side is one of my favorites. The Council Bluffs location offers more of a sports bar atmosphere while their Omaha location has outdoor seating if you're looking for a place to sit in the middle of the summer (LOL). Really great food, great service, and great atmosphere. What more could you ask for?

Her work ethic and attention to detail led me to believe she was either the owner of the franchise or the cleaning crew contracted to clean the store. She was - I believe - finishing cleaning exterior windows when I arrived. The temperature was around 22 degrees at 0' dark 30 when I arrived. She greeted me, took my order, presented my food in a timely manner, and went outside to finish cleaning at least one exterior window. She also did some exterior maintenance with a large mat, etc. I had asked her before I received my food if the area I intended to sit was closed. She informed me it wasn't. As I ate, I marveled at how much she was doing as she was so meticulous about replacing tables and chairs. It's hard to get/find good help these days, which is what led me to my previous assumption. Out of curiosity of an answer to my assumption, I asked her if it was a corporate store or franchise. She informed me it was a franchise. I asked if she was the owner. She said "I'm not even a manager" to my complete and utter surprise. I legitimately just knew she was going to be an owner based on her work ethic and apparent level of care and pride she seemingly took with regard to the store. She's a keeper!

The fries barely had any in them. Sometimes there's fries that have fallen in the bag so I double checked in the bag. There wasn't a single fry in the bag. They were all in the cup in the bottom so I actually pulled into a parking stall, walked in, showed it to them and said hey I ordered a large fry. The kid walks over to the fries grabs a cup throws it in the bag comes over to me and hand it to me and then walks away, didn't say a word so if they haven't changed their philosophy and how they do business in three years, I think that's a pretty strong indicator on how the businesses run when you get the exact same customer service three years apart, , whoever runs the place doesn't care.

One of my friends has been here with his co-workers a few times but I haven't been here before. (Maybe one time many many years ago that I don't remember....) We walk in on a Monday night and there were a few people there. It's a small place so I'm glad we were able to get a table. When we sat down, the bartender, (waitress as well), came right over and took our drink orders and eventually our food orders. I wanted to try their renowned broasted chicken. (A device essentially uses pressure cooking and light frying to create a thin crispy skin and juicy interior). The chicken was some of the best 'fried' chicken that I've ever had, seriously. Super crispy skin and juice inside. Reminds me a little of Korean fried chicken. The texas toast was yummy, the cole slaw was creamy (if you like creamy slaw), and the crispy tots were crispy delicious. My friend got a broasted chicken sammich and he loved it too. (High praise coming from him.) My friends and I have been wanting to go back and get more broasted chicken since we left. On Fridays, they have a 4 piece special for $13.99 that I'll have to take advantage of soon. All in all, this little bar/restaurant has some amazing food that I just didn't expect after driving and running past it for years. Can't wait to go back.
