Food wasn't fresh. The Hummus didn't taste anything like it should - was plain and the taste of preservatives was highly noticeable. The salad was tasteless and the portion was tiny. The chicken shawarma was not freshly cut to order but standing and waiting already cut probably since the morning or even the previous day. It was very noticeable in the taste. The rice was ok. Staff is all very nice. The guys are all smiling and you can tell their hearts are in the right place. But you can also tell this is their first restaurant. The place is totally disorganized, so everyone looks kind of confused. You have to order through a thick pane of glass, so there's no way they can actually hear you. Each of us had to repeat everything a few times, and gesture and point a lot. I had the chicken shawarma and it was really just not good. I stopped eating it after a few bites. The hummus was bland - not terrible, but definitely nothing to rave about. A friend had the falafel and didn't like it at all - ate only one of the three. The hummus tastes like it came out of a can (not a jar or tub, but a can), which is to say it has a surprisingly smooth and whipped texture, and has the flavor of very old olive oil, and nothing else. Terrible. Chicken shawarma was also relatively tasteless, and had lots of gristle, instead of choice tender pieces. Small portion as well. Ordered through uber eats, so food was cold when it arrived. Not a big deal since everything can be reheated easily. But nothing can help the blandness of the entire meal. Not sure where all the very positive reviews come from, maybe it's about inconsistency, but it seems that this place has been open at least 6 months, so no excuse not to have your operation down at this read more

This place is great, simple and AMAZING FOOD... on first sight, I didn't think it was going to be enough food. But once I finished I was stuffed, and the flavors, to die for. The food is so good, and it was VEGAN!! My friend got the chicken plate and couldn't stop eating it. Recently moved back to Chicago and came back to Rumi after nearly three years - still amazing, just like when they first opened. Today I had the chicken shawarma plate and fries and everything was cooked perfectly and tasted delicious. But then...I tried the falafel and wow, I had completely forgot how amazing their falafel is (my husband later reminded me that we always thought they had best falafel in the city hands down). The people who own/work at this place are so sweet and the atmosphere is very friendly! The food is also really reasonable and the portion sizes are great, but the reason for the 3 stars is because the food is just not that flavorful. It's a little bland and plain seasoning wise compared to other Mediterranean places I've tried. It's a new restaurant though so maybe with some time they'll master their dishes since they all seem so passionate about it. read more

Incredible food at a great price. The portion sizes are excellent for the price you pay, and there are both vegetarian and meat options. After our meal, one of the employees brought us a free slice of cake and wished us a happy New Years. Solid Mediterranean food on a street that is jam-packed with options. Very nice place to sit and eat but when I was there it was completely empty. I was a little worried but gave them a try anyway.... and I'm so glad I did! The food was outstanding and cost a lot less than I expected - definitely one of the best 'bang for your buck' options in this neighborhood. I believe a lot of their business is carry out. I was here for the first time last night, the atmosphere was superb. I love it when restaurants go the extra mile and put up decorations that represent what they're about instead of the usual basic décor. I've eaten a lot of falafel sandwiches in Chicago over the years and Rumi is one of the newest and one of the best. The falafels are fresher and have more spices than most places in the city. The other ingredients are very fresh too. We didn't realize it's pick your own ingredients (like Chipotle) at first so heads up for that. read more

This is the place to be for some awesome Middle Eastern food. All the meats were cooked to perfection and the seasoning was very flavorful. Very few Middle Eastern Restaurants make good Lamb Shish Kabobs but Rumi Grill's were exceptionally good. So was the falafel and chicken shawerma. And all ingredients are fresh. SERIOUSLY amazing! I've been there twice now and am so excited to have a new place to get my falafel fix. Everything is super fresh...they literally mold the chickpeas and throw them into the fryer for each falafel order. Pair that with warm pita, multiple crisp salad options and AMAZING hummus and you have a winner. Let's just say I wish this was any other Mediterranean place that Chicago offers. Bland food, skimpy portions, poorly executed. Got a chicken shwarma salad which consisted of 90% lettuce, 5% meat and 5% toppings. And the meat wasn't even freshly shaved from the spit, it was sitting in a tray and probably had been for the past hour. One of the employees had zero grasp of english and was having trouble understanding orders from other customers.
