My friend and I had both been curious about this place for a while so we went when my mom was in town. My friend and my mom both loved it and probably would give it five stars - I did like it but probably a little less (good food, but not a life changing meal which I know is a high bar). The chicken bastilla was mentioned a lot in reviews but I found it too sweet for a meal food, but my friend and mom liked it. I should have given 3.5 or 4 stars for this spot but due to their cash only policy, only 3 stars. The restaurant serves Moroccan food, with a wide range of choices of Tajine, Couscous and grilled stuff. In general, the food here were not pricy. Moreover, everyday it has some discounts, e.g., on Tajine Thursday the Tajine dishes are only $15. The restaurant also had many local decors. Sitting inside really made me feel as if I was having a meal in Morocco. I ordered the beet salad and Lamb Fez (lamb shank Tajine). Both dishes were generous in size. The salad tasted fresh but lacked flavor. I could hardly taste the acidity of lemon juice. The Tajine was really new to me. I only had chicken Tajine before and the ingredients were quite different from this one: the lamb shank was cooked with prunes, cinnamon, honey and caramelized onions, so that it had lots of sweetness (in fact, a bit too sweet for me). It was topped with some hard boiled eggs and almonds. Try blending the egg yolk with the sauce/broth and having it with the lamb. The almonds added some crisp ones to the fork-tender meat. Food came out in reasonable time but other than that, the service was so-so. While there was an ATM machine, when I asked about payment methods, they did not inform me of it; nor did my server inform me of the cash-only policy. Service was good and atmosphere was pleasant and quiet, an easy place to converse. However, I was very disappointed in the vegetable tagine. I expected delicious Moroccan spices (as stated in the menu) and the waiter assured me it would be flavorful, but it lacked flavor. It was also unsubstantial. I filled up on bread and added the olives and a little sauce (harissa?) provided to the table as an appetizer to make it more substantial and tasty. Others in my group were happy with their food and shared a bite of chicken bastila and marguez with me. Both of those dishes were delicious. Being Moroccan myself, I can confidently say this place is a SURE BET. The harira is EXCELLENT, especially during the cold winter months. The royal couscous is, in my opinion, one of the best choices on the menu. The lamb was fall-off-the-bone tender and extremely flavorful, the merguez sausage tasted just like the ones in Morocco, and the chicken added that extra touch so you can enjoy a bit of every meat. The couscous is served with its broth on the side, which you can pour over the dish, making it incredibly flavorful and juicy. The vegetables were fresh and high quality. My friend ordered the kefta and egg tagine, which was also extremely delicious and comforting, with a rich tomato sauce. And let's not even start on the Moroccan pastries, they were the perfect sweet touch to the meal. The staff was incredibly welcoming and kind. Service was good. Prices were standard for being in Chicago. Portion sizes were sufficient for two people. We ordered lamb fez and merguez. They were equally very tasty and filling. Lamb fez has a big piece of lamb in a stew with prunes, cinnamon, almonds, and honey. Hard boiled eggs are served with it. The lamb was cooked well, meat was very tender and juicy. Merguez is a dish with homemade sausage stuffed with ground lamb and beef. They're on top of couscous and vegetables. Sausage was bursting with flavor. Our Moroccan server was great! Very polite, funny and engaged, perhaps he was the owner or family? It was clear he really cared about his food and sharing it with us, educating us, and welcoming us. The decor is nice, we sat in a back room that had fabrics hanging from the ceiling that made it very cozy. Finally, the food was outstanding! I had lamb fez and the table shared a chicken bastilla. Wonderful tasty food delivered directly to the hotel. Unfortunately, I still had to get some work done for next day's presentation - hence having to drop plans to get out for dinner. I ordered an Uber Eat takeout from Shokran Moroccan - and I was not disappointed. Loved the Sweet Lamb Couscous which was simply wonderful all around (and provided a help line (see below*). The portion was very generous and the pita bread cold probably have been skipped. And I have to admit that I went back to nibble a bit on the remaining couscous as I continued to work... Beyond that, the Shrimp with lots of garlic in spiced tomato-chili pepper sauce was delicious. And last, the Shokran Salad - a mixture of greens, apples, raisins, walnuts and a (a bit sparse) dressing - was very refreshing and provided the "healthy balance". *PS: Even though I requested utensils, there were none provided. A year ago we travelled to Morocco and fell in love with the country, the people, the culture, the music and the food. We were looking for a special place for our wedding anniversary, and Husband suggested we go to Shokran, a Moroccan restaurant at 4027 West Irving Park Road in Chicago. Neither of us knew anything about it, but the photos of the food and the restaurant both looked interesting. We are SO glad we took a chance. The storefront is larger than it appears from the street, with three very different and welcoming rooms. Ahmed, our waiter, was pleasant, personable and helpful. And the food ~ absolutely delicious. We both chose the May special, a small chicken bastilla and a choice of one of three chicken tangines. My order was the Chicken Fes, which consisted of plump, tender apricots and chicken in a heavenly sauce. H chose a savory Chicken Casablanca, which had potatoes and olives - perfectly cooked with a tasty sauce. While we waited for our food to arrive, we enjoyed homemade pita with olive salad and drank delicious mint tea. Truly a little jewel. My first experience with Moroccan food. What a revelation! The Chicken Bastila was encased in a delicately flaky pastry. To die for. The Lamb Fez was falling-off-the-bone good, in a perfectly balanced sauce with prunes, cinnamon, almonds, and honey. The Sweet Chicken, on a bed of light couscous, was equally balanced. Was in a mood for some Moroccan food and was glad that I was within Shokran's delivery radius. I am fully blown away by how much the food tastes like it does in Morocco. Often restaurants dumb down recipes or skip ingredients to Americanize the dishes. Shokran didn't do that. The mixed grill of chicken and lamb kebabs, sausage, and merguez was delicious. None of the meat was dry and you can taste the spices. While the spicy potatoes were not peppery, they were full of flavor. The couscous with beans and raisin were a nice accompaniment and I'm hooked on their hummus. When life resumes some semblance of normalcy, I will have to go for a sit-down because these dishes deserve a proper encore. read more

It's a busy intersection here in Chicago, so it would be tough to find parking. Small corner place, almost missed it. Just walking in, oooh the smells of the food! Mmmm, you felt comfort of home cooked meal. This visit, I have started my Lenten journey of no meat until Easter (no red meat, pork or chicken). Complimentary pita bread served with a red sauce - delicious, and if you like black olives - I do, it is also given. Yummy! So it revved up my appetite. In this area there are plenty of not-so-great Mediterranean restaurants. Shokran is the exception. On a recent outing where a group of family shared appys, entrees, sides and tea. Every item ordered was superb. Even the sides which had rudimentary ingredients, every dish was seasoned and prepared expertly. Everyone was wowed and ate their fill. *Some menu items have a very basic description. Don't allow that to sway you from trying something different. Two entrees the fam weren't sure to try, which intrigued me: the sweet lamb (served over a bed of couscous w/ sautéed raisins & onions) and chicken bastilla. The bastilla is an appetizer. A meld of savory with a hint of sweet. It shouldn't be missed. Two details to know in advance; are they byob and are they now accepting credit cards. Last, there was one waiter which acted like a prick. Disrespectful and would not pay full attention. Maybe it was an off night for him or he just lacks customer courtesy. I came here with high hopes - I used to live in Philly and went to an absolutely amazing Moroccan place and I feared my memory of that food would not be met. However the food was just as delightful as I remembered. We ordered the chicken bastilla as an appetizer and it was amazing - essentially a chicken pastry with powdered sugar and cinnamon. We also ordered the sweet lamb which came with couscous and various fried fruit - also a winner. The side dish of roasted vegetables was not great - it was undercooked. Finally we ordered the Moroccan mint tea which was sweetened and delicious. Final shout out for the service: I sat in the front and it was quite cold and they allowed me to move to a warmer area - twice! They were so nice and accommodating.
