I have not been to Rudy's in about 10 years or so. I have to say that the food is as good as usual. Tortillas fresh, salsa super chilled and fresh tasting, but the real star of the show, the bathroom. You know, when a restaurant gets to be older, the bathrooms start to look shabby. This restaurant was founded 28 years ago, and yet, the men's room was immaculate. It smelled clean and fresh and the porcelain was super white. I think people's tastes are changing, and Rudy's is a conventional LA Mexican joint, but it is really good food. The new generation of places popping up are not the same level in terms of quality. Server was SUPER NICE and accommodating. Just good people. Give them a try. I think you'll be happy you did. Ate here for the first time the other day with my better half. I ordered a 3 item combination of a beef taco, cheese enchilada and chile relleno and wife ordered a green wet burrito. We also ordered guacamole and a Modelo. First let me say that the service was over the top being both friendly and often. Now to the food. The guacamole was very good. The other meals were good but nothing to write home about. Very tasty, well prepared but very common. We also ordered (free) much spicier sauces than were originally served and they were good. Location: right on Myrtle Ave, this restaurant is definitely conveniently located! After a drink or meal here, you're able to walk around old town Monrovia (and who doesn't love that?!) Every Friday, there's the street fair which is when my boyfriend and I went, so I'm unable to speak on the parking since it was limited due to the fair. Ambiance: this place has a real mom and pop type feel, which I always love! Since it was during the street fair, it was a bit crowded, but we got seated immediately. Food: was okay. I got the ceviche (wouldn't recommend). I don't even know how to describe it, but it was not good ceviche lol. My boyfriend got a combo plate and liked his dish. We both got drinks. I got a margarita slush type drink which was a bit on the sweet side, and my boyfriend got a drink that I thought was horrific, but he really enjoyed it. To each their own! Service: was okay. Terrible quality food. Expensive. Not fresh. Chile relleno burrito Chile relleno tasted fine but there were way too many beans in the burrito. The burrito was also topped with a "sauce" that tasted very odd. It was not fresh, not seasoned, had no spice, and I believe had cinnamon which was unpleasant to taste. The burrito itself lacked seasoning, texture, and a fresh ingredient. Steak picado The steak was very tough and I was shocked to discover it was NOT SEASONED. It was very dry and didn't taste good. This happened to be a pricier menu item so I was very upset. Overall, Rudy's lacks quality, freshness, and tasty food. I could recommend a dish called chicken flautas, light flakey crust on the outside, healthy portion of chicken on the inside, dip that in sour cream and guacamole, salsa, tasty. Happy Hour! I have only been here for happy hour. 1/2 off drinks and the the drinks are not weak. A small little buffet of munchies like fried burritos, enchiladas, nachos, etc. Several kinds of salsas that are really good to go with your chips. So a thumbs up for a good happy hour. Rudy's was a backup place since our original thoughts of pizza at Flamzz were dashed because they decided to close an hour early. The place looked fairly busy so that gave us some confidence that this must be a good place. The inside of the restaurant looked pretty "well seasoned" but not neglected so that was another good sign. The wait staff was friendly and attentive and very helpful with menu questions and recommendations (the menu is extensive.) The food and drinks also came out promptly. All of this was very appreciated since we had a long day and were pretty beat. Unfortunately, the food was fairly mediocre...and considering I'm from the capitol of mediocre mexican food (Hawaii) that's saying a lot. The portions were decent but the food overall was pretty bland. I ordered a Beef Chimichanga and was pretty disappointed with it. The beef tasted like it needed to be seasoned a bit more and the shell wasn't really cooked thoroughly. Instead of a nice and crispy deep fried tortilla, it was still soft like it was fried shortly on a flat top. The rest of the table ordered a Chicken Chimi, similar situation as my Chimi, and a combination plate of Chicken taco and Chile relleno. I didn't try it but she said her combination plate was pretty good. Reading some of the older reviews it sounds like this has a pretty good reputation so maybe I was just there on the wrong night. I've been coming here since high school and it's always been a pleasant visit each time. Food is pretty good and comes with complimentary chips & salsa. Warm, fresh tortilla chips makes it addicting. They have a lunch menu for cheaper prices. Their burritos are huge! You can probably have leftovers for another meal. The fajita quesadilla (with your choice of meat) is also tasty. If I was to compare this place to other local Mexican restaurants , which there are many, it would be at the bottom of the barrel. The service was terrible and the food wasn't any where near places like Cabrera's or Margarita's which are only about ten minutes away geographically, but light years apart in culinary terms.
