There was a bit of a wait before my order was taken, but honestly, it worked out in my favor because it gave me plenty of time to look over the menu. There were so many tempting options that it was honestly hard to decide! I ultimately chose three items and enjoyed a few bites of each. Ham & Fontina Scone: This was my first time trying a scone, and I was pleasantly surprised. The texture reminded me of a dry biscuit, but the ham added a delicious savory flavor that I really enjoyed. Frittata Plate: The frittata was SO good! It wasn't too dry, and all of the flavors worked really well together. It was served with polenta, which reminded me of really fine grits, along with fruit. After trying it, I realized that one entrée would definitely be enough for me to enjoy on its own. Breakfast 'ZA: This was essentially a breakfast pizza topped with a fried egg, and the egg was such a nice touch. The 'ZA itself was really good, although I think adding something similar to a gravy or sauce would make it a little less dry. Even without it, though, the fried egg really took it to another level. Brown Sugar Shaken Espresso: I decided to try the Brown Sugar Shaken Espresso, which was the barista's pick. This was my first time having a shaken espresso, and I'm so glad I gave it a try! It was refreshing and perfect for a hot day. The inside of Trattoria ZaZa is nice, although it is somewhat small, so I opted to sit outside. It was a very warm day, but the awning provided plenty of shade and made the outdoor seating comfortable. I also appreciated that, even though the restaurant doesn't have traditional table service, someone periodically checked on me to make sure I didn't need anything else. Overall, I had a great brunch experience at Trattoria ZaZa. There were plenty of menu options, the food was flavorful, and I really enjoyed trying a few things that were new to me. I'd definitely be open to coming back and trying more of the menu!

I also really enjoyed the open-kitchen concept, as I always like being able to see the food being prepared. My only concern was with a couple of things I noticed in the kitchen. Since the kitchen is completely open and visible to guests, I think extra attention should be given to sanitation and overall presentation. I noticed one of the cooks drinking while preparing food, and another wiped his nose with his arm while working. Although he didn't use his hand, it still left me feeling a little uneasy. When guests can see directly into the kitchen, those small details really matter. Aside from that, we enjoyed our experience, and I do think this is a place worth trying at least once. The atmosphere, service, and recommendations from our server were definitely highlights of our visit.

Ruby Sunshine is a great brunch spot where every bite feels like a celebration of Southern flavors. On my recent visit, I was drawn to the Sweet Heat Chicken & French Toast Bites, and it turned out to be a dish worth writing home about. The presentation was as inviting as the atmosphere--bright and bustling, but not overwhelming. The dish arrived quickly despite the weekend brunch rush, and the aroma was an instant mood booster. The French Toast Bites were perfectly golden, with a slight crisp on the outside and a soft, pillowy center. Lightly dusted with powdered sugar and served with warm syrup, they offered just the right amount of sweetness without being overpowering. Then came the star of the plate: the Sweet Heat Chicken. The crispy, golden-brown chicken tenders were seasoned with a subtle kick of spice that paired beautifully with a touch of honey glaze. The balance between the heat and the sweetness was a revelation--bold enough to wake up your taste buds but mellowed by the sweetness of the French toast. What tied everything together was the mix of textures and flavors. The crunch of the chicken, the softness of the French toast, and the interplay of sweet, savory, and spicy elements created a harmonious bite every time. The staff at Ruby Sunshine added to the experience, with their friendly demeanor and attentive service, ensuring coffee cups were never empty and dishes were cleared promptly. The cozy, cheerful vibe made it easy to linger and enjoy every moment. If you're looking for a unique twist on classic brunch fare, the Sweet Heat Chicken & French Toast Bites are an absolute must-try. Ruby Sunshine has mastered the art of Southern comfort with a modern edge, and I can't wait to return to explore more of their creative menu. read more

I recently had brunch at Ruby Sunshine and while the vibe of the restaurant was really nice, my meal didn't quite live up to my expectations. The space itself is beautiful, lively, and perfect for a weekend brunch with friends. The staff was friendly when we arrived and checked on us throughout the visit, which I appreciated. I ordered the fish and grits and also asked for a side of bacon cooked crispy. The presentation looked great when the food first came out, but the flavor was a little disappointing. The fish was much saltier than I expected, which made it hard to fully enjoy the dish because that was the main thing I was looking forward to. The grits themselves were creamy and had a good texture, but the saltiness of the fish kind of overpowered everything else on the plate. The bacon was another downside. I asked for crispy, but it came out burned instead, which gave it a bitter taste. That was frustrating because crispy bacon and burnt bacon are definitely not the same. Overall, I still think this is a cute brunch spot with great energy and potential, but the food quality just didn't match the atmosphere during this visit. I might try it again and order something different next time. read more

A taste of NOLA here in Birmingham! There are not many places around here that you can get freshly made beignets and Ruby Sunshine definitely knows how to bring it! They always seem to have a seasonal special running which is always a plus. Right now, my favorite thing on their seasonal menu is their ooh-bae stuffed French toast! It is to die for! I visited with a classmate of mine and of course I had to order my favorite, and we split an order of their king cake beignets and let me tell you they did not disappoint! Our service as usual was top notch. The bill was to be as expected as we split the bill, around $50 with a 25% tip so roughly $25 each. The only negative thing I would say is if you have any dietary restrictions with pork (allergy, sensitivity, preference, religion, etc.) do not eat anything that is fried there. They fry just about everything in pork. Stick with the veggie tacos or the pancakes, French toast, beignets etc. read more

Visited this restaurant while in town for church, and unfortunately the experience was extremely disappointing. From the moment we arrived, it was clear that the level of service was not the same for everyone. We waited nearly 15 minutes before anyone acknowledged us, while a white party of three who arrived after us was greeted immediately and had their order taken right away. When our waitress finally approached the table, her attitude was dismissive and uninterested. Things only went downhill from there. Our food arrived on dirty plates, undercooked, and completely unappealing. For a place the locals spoke so highly of, the service and food quality were unacceptable. Based on the treatment we received -- which felt discriminatory toward African American customers -- this will be my first and last visit. read more

Ruby Sunshine hit another home run with this amazing dish. It was almost too beautiful to eat! To start things off the waiter was kind and greeted us warmly. We were seated at a clean booth and offered a drink. Myself and others with me were treated with kindness and hospitality. The food was hot and looked great. The taste was on point! I've made several trips to this location and the vibe has never let me down. All of these things come together to make Ruby Sunshine a solid bet for anyone looking for a great brunch! We had a picky 5 year old in tow who also found something great to eat. Came in at 2 PM to a 20-minute wait. We were sat in a booth that was wood and very uncomfortable. The service was good although the server went over the alcohol drink menu even after we ordered 2 waters and a Diet. I had my 9-year-old with us. I ordered the bacon burger. I asked for the bacon to be regular bacon and no tomato. The burger came with pigs candy bacon. The mayo listed on the menu was missing. The cheese was shredded and not melted causing it to fall off the burger when it was picked up to eat. All in all nothing special for $50. Food was good especially the fried green tomatoes. Parking was awful. There is such a small parking lot that lunch is not a good time to go here. Music was great and the shrimp and grits were my favorite things of the entire week. I'd recommend this for effective service and proper food handling. Hostess was very pleasant. Line to get on the wait-list moved efficiently. Our waitress, Caitlin, was wonderful! The restaurant is bright and has modern light fixtures. I really enjoyed the music! I'm an 80s baby & heard many of the songs that were popular when I was in grade school.

Thankfully free parking was available. I walked in at the perfect time, just as the breakfast grill was shutting down and the lunch grill was heating up. I was 5 minutes pass breakfast, as told by the waitress. She was so kind and told me that she would ask, if they (he) could prepare a breakfast for me. The answer was yes, but no grits. Oh well, let's try the omelette and hash brows. I'm really not into hash browns but these were delicious! Crispy and perfectly round. The omelette was also good and fluffy. The coffee was a good robust cup of coffee. This is a real old school diner. Counter seats with a few booths to the side. No frills here. Decent diner food with great friendly service. By the time I finished my breakfast, the lunch crowd was starting to come in for a seat at the counter and booths. I heard someone say, this is the best Philly cheesesteak in the area. Anyways, this was a pleasant place to have a good simple meal with some awesome service. The only reason I'm not giving 5* is because of not being able to get the grits, which was my fault for not getting there a little sooner. I will definitely come back.

I always loved the ambiance of this place as it is not only very inviting, but they also seem to offer so many food and drink options. I came early to class this past Thursday so I could try some of the menu options finally. They had a summer drink menu, and I knew I had to try the Pink Drink. I also ordered a breakfast burrito. The pink drink I enjoyed, but the breakfast burrito I will not be getting again. It lacked flavor to me. My friend Linh ordered grits that looked good. Service was a bit slow, but I could tell the cashier was working very hard.
