I'm surprised I haven't reviewed Ruby Hill already as my work friends and I have made it a tradition to come taste at least twice a year (with one of us being a member here). We have been able to try various tasting menus and as a group we really like their peacock zin, cuvee dray, and the sparkling. Recently we tried the wine train experience which worked out quite well since it was actually pretty sunny after a rainy November week. As we were celebrating some birthdays they decorated a chalkboard sign with our names and welcomed us with some sparkling. The guide warned us that there would be plenty of pours and some snacks at our final stop, so we grabbed a pack of crackers and some meat to tide us over. The train is really cute with barrel seats. However, be warned that it is quite a bumpy ride, so you may want to finish what's in your glass before it starts. It can also get pretty warm in the train, as we ended up not needing our jackets. We got to taste some of the grapes off the vines and many photo shoot opportunities as our guide told us some fun history tidbits. We ended at the water tower where there was more wine and a snack plate waiting for us. The decor in the water tower was really cute and festive for fall. The minimum for the train is 8 paid spots and the maximum is 14. The trolley could definitely comfortably fit that many. Their merch is really cute, and someone almost always find something to go home with. One last note, we love their French onion dip as well and look forward to having that each visit. read more

You can tell they really know their wines and love sharing that passion with guests. Flew in from Vegas to visit family and decided to go to Ruby Hill for some wine tasting. I wish I could say my visit was pleasant but unfortunately it was the most unwelcoming visit I've experienced. We arrived to our 1pm reservation for a tasting. My mother and I had visited this place in the past and had a very good experience we invited a friend to experience it with us. We were greeted with a glass of wine and told where we can find the rest of our party. We sat in the back area outside and waited for someone to assist us. After waiting about 10-15 mins John Q came over and asked how we were and if we had been helped. We told him no we hadn't been helped as of yet and he immediately ran inside to get us assistance. As we sat there I noticed Rhonda & Diane coming outside and looking around. Rhonda continued clearing glasses from other tables while Diane proceeded to help another table. As we continued waiting another party of 4 comes in and takes a seat. Diane proceeds to see them being seated and as she finished the table she was at she ran over to happily greet the new party. We then went to the front to inquire what the procedure for a tasting was as we hadn't been serviced at now 30 mins of waiting. I was then told again someone would be over. Diane finally came over after waiting for way longer than we should've with the most unwelcoming and dry tone. She seemed nervous & tense speaking with us. While half explaining the wines to our teenage daughters we had to politely let her know they were children and she can give her focus to the 3 adults rather than the 2 teenage girls. She proceeded to apologize and continue her speech of what wines were on the paper and the "history" of the wineries. Now I have experienced many wine tastings and usually the person giving us the information is very informative and knows what they are saying. She again was nervous and started stuttering over her words. After sitting through the most awkward intro we decided on the flight. Diane brought our flight out and we had to ask which ones were which as she just sat the flight down and walked away. After pointing out the wines instead of doing the tasting experience she went on to other tables in which you can see from her demeanor was visibly more comfortable than when she was at ours. We proceeded to do our OWN tasting and made the best of our situation after having to force Diane to talk to us and tell us she's been working there for 10 years she didn't want to offer us any type of conversation we had to make her speak to us and engage. the one and only time she gave us a suggestion of a wine that was her favorite in which we had to ask for that information as well. She never came to check on our table otherwise we had to go inside 3 times to get some assistance. And then to finish it off she offered us a free bottle of wine and in her words "yea I heard you weren't happy with the service we're going to give you a free bottle of wine as a sorry." It wasn't apologetic at all I then complained to one of the ladies that did the tasting check in who then got John Q back out to speak with us. He was very friendly and apologetic and almost surprised that Diane treated us this way as she is usually a favorite. It's unfortunate as this is one of our favorite spots to visit when I'm in town. Moving forward I hope Diane learns to treat ALL guest with the same respect. As a paying customer I wouldn't expect anything less than respectfulness as we were to her. read more

We had awesome tour guides, Tore & Phil, they were extremely knowledgeable and showed us a good time. We met inside the center where they have bottles and other stuff they sell, all kinds of cool stuff for your house. Then you go on this old school type of school bus and they take you on this tour around the grounds and tell you about the history of the winery. Tore knew a ton about the land, its neighbors, and both he & Phil knew a ton about the process of growing/harvesting grapes & making wine. It was super educational and informative. You also get to get out and see the vines, and go in this old water tower type room for a little bite to eat and chill before going back. I'd 100% do this tour again. read more

Went on the bus tour this time , we had 14 people. You need i believe 8 to book this bus tour, but I'm not too exact, the best thing to do is call ahead to book. The tour was about 2 hours, starts with a white sparkling wine. Then we stop in the middle of the wine vines to drink something made from those exact vines ! Then we stopped at the barrel room, see pictures posted. Then a wonderful wine and cheese at the former well tower, quite fun to learn how to decant a wine. We ended back at the place where the bus parks. James was a joy to see drive us around, please request him! And don't worry he's qualified he is a retired firefighter. My husband and I are members so we try to come here once or twice a quarter! We usually come on Sundays after 3ish with no reservation. Usually it's not busy or packed but if it is the staff always makes sure they find us a table inside or in one of their covered rooms since we bring our boys and it would get pretty chilly outside. They're kid and pet friendly so that's a huge plus for us cause we love bringing our kids. In terms of which flight to choose from, try all. Their wines are tasty and I always pick a few items from their shop like crackers and cheese. Overall I love coming here! read more

I've brought multiple friends here for wine tasting in separate occasions and it's always been a smooth and fun experience! Great ambiance with a variety of picturesque backgrounds to choose from. I've visited this winery several times and have always had a great experience--until recently. On my last couple of visits, we were served by someone new to us named John, and unfortunately, he made our group feel very unwelcome. My aunt is a member, and we were a party of seven there to enjoy a tasting. We also intended to purchase a bottle and open one from the pickup, with over an hour and a half before closing. With seven people, that's just about four small glasses per bottle. John approached our table in a very rude and confrontational manner, warning us that we would be asked to leave if we opened a pickup bottle. We assured him we had not, but instead of accepting that, he repeatedly said, "Don't lie to me," which was extremely uncomfortable and inappropriate. It's disappointing to feel so unwelcome in a place we've previously enjoyed so much. An experience like this truly affects how guests perceive the winery. Moving forward, we will be requesting a different server, as we would prefer to avoid a repeat of such an unpleasant interaction. read more

Amazing time .. I stumbled on this winery while in the area They don't allow out side food but have food to purchase. The offer a quarter membership for $150 if I am remembering correctly which includes 4 bottles of wine and free tastings .. it's actually a really good deal. But it's best to purchase at the beginning of the quarter ie. April!!! I look forward to coming back . JohnQ was our host and he was AMAZING clearly someone who enjoys his job. He was very informative and knowledgeable. He didn't try to up sale us and provided very good pairing suggestions. They had heaters for the outdoor area and indoor seating. We didn't have a reservation and were walks in and staff quickly got us seated despite having several reservations at the time we arrived. It was a good experience. read more

We stopped by Ruby Hill on the recommendation of one of the servers at another tasting room on a weekday. We couldn't be happier with the recommendation! Ruby Hill isn't a picturesque lookout point but they have a tasting area that is super comfy, with cozy cushioned chairs and some tables/chairs. Definitely a relaxed environment. The area is mostly shaded though some areas you could get some sun. There were plenty of people there for tastings, though tables were still available without a wait. The servers were great, very friendly and helpful. The pours were generous. They waived the tasting fee with the purchase of two bottles. We ended up purchasing two of their smaller production wines. One fun fact is that they have a specific wine that, when purchased, they make donations to Valley Humane Society -- and they had already donated over 75k! On that note, they are also super dog friendly, just make sure your pup is friendly/well behaved. Children are welcome to join as well (they should also be well behaved). read more

Ventured off to Livermore to check out the Vineyards. Little did I know it was just amazing like Napa. The distance is a bit far but decided to give it a chance. Many friends have gotten married at Rubyhill and I thought why not check out wine tasting. Non member 25pp or buy a bottle and it will cover the tasting. Gorgeous patio to chill and enjoy sips of wine. Definitely I will be coming back, they have their own private bus that takes you to 3 wineries and a pairing with cheese/crackers for 45pp. Salut! read more

Thank you John!! We got married at Casa Real on November 7 this year, and so after our rehearsal we went to Ruby Hill for some wine before our rehearsal dinner. I had contacted them to just set up a little *something* where we'd just have some wine before dinner but the staff went way above and beyond!! They picked out a few different wines, poured for everyone, and talked to us about the wine. But it was still super relaxed and allowed our evening to maintain the vibe we were going for. I'm glad that I got to try this winery with my now former ex-boyfriend as he's a member of them. We got to do the wine tasting, and it's so cool that they serve the wine glasses in this cascading glasses holder. So beautiful! I definitely enjoyed it, and my fave one was the Peacock Zin, in which he bought a couple bottles which we enjoyed afterwards. The grounds were beautiful, and I believe they were having a wedding there too in the other part of the place. Winery membership has its privileges I became a member of Ruby Hill because I absolutely LOVE the wine selection, atmosphere outdoor-fun open tasting space- and reservations whenever I like. The wine itself- lots of reds, from dry to robust taste. They have a sparkling as well as great whites. Patchwork Zen is delicious. I get 15% of as a member and free tasting for up to 4 people. I get about 4-5 bottles every three months never more thank $135. I can swap them at pick up. They have a great selection of vittles- cheeese, Olives, crackers and deli meat. My husband and I have decided to cancel our membership here after being members for a little over a year. We made reservations for Saturday, 8/27 to do a tasting and pick up our wine order. We found out that we can no longer sub the sparkling wine with our order. BUMMER, that is one of the main reasons we have chosen to stay a member here... =( when I asked why the answer was because the sparkling wine is a cheaper wine, however we were able to sub out with other wines that were only $2 more so it didn't make much sense to us if we are willing and have always paid the difference. We figured if we are going to pay $100 plus every few months we want to pay for wine we enjoy vs wine we are forced to buy. We loved being a member at ruby hill initially because of the flexibility with our membership and the option to choose which wines we want to bring home after we met the requirement. We enjoyed the fact that our money was actually going to our wine of choice, but now since that is no longer offered we have decided to go elsewhere sadly, especially after being members for a year now and inviting all of our friends and fam there for our wedding rehearsal and wedding day. We figured we live way too far (1.5 hours away) to not be able to pick up the wine of our choosing. We will still go back when we are in the area and grab a bottle of sparkling wine which is cheaper than being a member anyways. Very disappointing though and no real perk to being a member anymore. read more

Our group of 4 visited Ruby Hill on a Saturday afternoon and arrived with a reservation. Overall we had a good experience here. It was a pretty busy and the patio was a bit warm but overall a good time. We were seated in the covered patio, which filled up quickly and became very loud with large groups. The wines were alright but nothing too special. There are tastier wines in Livermore. The service was decent, but our hostess was not interested in providing the full experience of wine tasting as she wouldn't really tell us anything about the wines. She only told us to start the flight from top to bottom and use the QR code if we had any questions. Our group of 4 ordered 2 white wine flights and 2 red wine flights. I think we enjoyed the white wine flights a bit more, but there weren't any to write home about. Overall the grounds are very pretty but small. The driveway for cars is right in front, so it's tough to walk around there and the back of the winery was closed off (either due to covid or an event). They have a beautiful fountain out front where you can take photos, but that area is not shaded so the sun gets very hot. All in all we had a good time, but will probably make an advance reservation at another winery when we have guests in town again. read more

I went with my friend who is a member here and enjoyed my experience. Originally we were seated in a small cabana that was kind of dark. We had to pull up a chair for our party of 7, but we were able to move to a bigger area. It was a pleasant experience. There is a small market where you can purchase cheese, crackers, and other food pairings to enjoy with your wine! The wine comes out on a "rack" and you start from the highest and make your way down. I really liked that, as it doesn't take up too much space and have empty glasses just scattered. We had the jewel tasting and I fell in love with the 3rd wine. The Petit Verdot was so dreamy!!! I'm always up for a nice winery without the drive to Napa. A friend recommended Ruby Hills and I love wine tasting so we gave it a try. Weekends require reservations. We checked in and were taken to the patio area where we were seated. I liked the patio for the fresh air but also because they had heaters on to keep you warm (it was a chilly day). We tried two different flights. Although the hostess, I believe her name was Kiana, was friendly and came to check on us a few times, she didn't provide any history of the wines, only the order in which they should be tasted. The wines are just okay. It was pretty crowded so I may try it again during the week to see how it is. I'm not sure if it's because of Covid but for the charcuterie boards, you basically buy what you want from the deli and make it yourself. read more

Visited on a Friday afternoon for a tasting. The venue was beautiful - the indoor area was full so they opened the patio for us. It was a bit chilly but the heat helped as it warmed up. My 'first visit' was for school prom in 2011 so when this name popped up on my Yelp radar for a local winery, I knew it would be a nice place to spend time! On weekends they accommodate your outdoor tasting experiences through reservation only, rightfully so to provide adequate social distancing. I was able to snag an 11AM reservation last minute. Thank you for accommodating me even though I was 15 minute late :) My bf and I had the pleasure of being served by Kathy on a lovely Sunday morning and she was patient in taking us through their tasting menu. $20/person and they separate wines by red, white, and products for members. I explained to Kathy that in my previous wine tasting experience at another company, I didn't like their chardonnay but was interested in the white tastings at Ruby Hill. Kathy reassured me that if there's something we don't like, she'll be more than happy to switch it out because "if this is going straight to our hips, it might as well be something we enjoy! " There are snacks available for pairings but I don't think they serve full meals here. 2 hours later I can now say that just because you don't like a type of wine at a certain winery, it doesn't mean you'll dislike the next one at a different company. My friends boyfriend is a member here and I tagged along for some wine tasting for the first time at Ruby Hill. It was a piping hot Saturday midday, we didn't have reservations but was able to get a table without any issue. We got seated and then went to pick out some cheese and crackers for a small chaceuterie board. Small note, don't pick chocolate on a really hot day, it melted before I can even get to it lol. No brainer but I was craving chocolate.... The barrel room, tasting room both indoor and out were nice. Plenty of seating for both intimate and large parties. Once back at our table we got to tasting. Pours were typical size, wines were fab. Service was good but we didn't really like our server to be honest. She wasn't too friendly and I get it, it's an extremely hot day, dealing with people, maybe some wasted people but customer service could have been slightly better. Other then that, no complaints and they don't have to ask me twice about tagging along again, lol. read more

Tried two different flights with my best friend. The red and the reserve. Neither flights had wine that stood out to us, but also wasn't bad. Their Zinfandel had a really great aroma, but I am not much of a fan of Zin's flavor. The aroma was almost more herbal then of fruits. Might come back again to give it another try. read more

Came by for a Sunday afternoon tasting. Welcomed with a sign to wait for a host but stood around watching employees have conversations and laughs with one another, but not welcoming us into the establishment. Eventually when the front area employee finished her conversation, was informed of my options. Sad to learn that Ruby Hill's new business model is to store all their wine glasses at the bar, preventing patrons from performing tastings at the bar. It's sad they're doing this as wine tasting should be a social experience. A concept the staff seems to grasp well, but only with each other. Last upset to report was the concept of a wine tree. Again, the concept of wine tasting is a social one. After being seated, I selected from a tasting and was brought this wine tree. Minimal explanation was provided then the server sprinted away to return to whatever conversation she was likely having with someone more important than patrons. On a lighter note, the establishment is absolutely beautiful. I also love that they have light snacks (meats/crackers/cheeses/jams/chocolates) to enjoy with the wine. If you choose to come, come with friends because nobody else will embrace or socialize with you. PS I won't judge the wine... everyone's taste buds are different! read more

I came here with my sister who is a member and went wine tasting with her, my niece and another sister. I had a blast! The people who work there are very welcoming and warm and I appreciated them. I came a bit late, but felt like I was welcomed. I love the tasting set up that they have, and yes, I left with wine! I'd come here for anything at anytime. They host events as well and I hope that I'm able to attend one at some point. I loved the fact that the wine tasting came with a proper taste. Sometimes, the people are kind of stingy, depending on who's tasting. But for me, the pour was good and it allowed me to actually have the time and the room to compare the wines with each other and pair them with some food. While, I didn't get a membership, I have to say that if invited by a member - hint, hint sis - I will definitely come back and will be prepared to purchase even more wine to take with me. read more

Great wine and great friends. We found this tasting room after reading the great reviews, and liked that they were open on the days that most of the other wineries in the area were closed. We called and were told that we didn't need a reservation on a weekday, and to come on in. We were seated in the beautiful tasting room, and were promptly greeted with a taste of their sparkling wine while we looked over the menu and decided which tasting we wanted to order. I get migraine headaches when I drink red wine, so was thrilled to see that they have an all-white tasting. My fiancé is more of a red drinker, so had a few different tasting flights to choose from. The white tasting flight was refreshing and crisp (I'm not big on overly sweet wines, and was happy that none of the whites I tasted fell into that category). I enjoyed that they had so much more to offer than Chardonnay (my least favorite white), and we took home bottles of their sparkling, Sauvignon Blanc, and Rose. The membership here really makes sense if you live anywhere in the area and enjoy their wines - tasting is complimentary for members and you can come as often as you would like. We did end up joining and have since brought my dad with us on a return visit. We found that everyone that worked there was incredibly welcoming, helpful, and friendly. I haven't been wine tasting in years. What a special experience! Ruby Hill Winery is located in the Livermore Valley. On the weekends, reservations are required since they can get quite busy. Once we arrived and checked in, we were greeted warmly with a complimentary tasting of bubbly. They have gourmet deli items for purchase as well as merchandise for sale in the center of the tasting room. Our server brought us to our table in the outdoor patio. She seated us at a corner table so our location felt very intimate and private. The ambiance was perfect. The sun was shining and it wasn't too cold nor too hot out. The vibe here is very casual and comfortable. Very welcoming. I chose the Mixed Flight. All the wines were delicious. I couldn't decide on what to buy so I chose a red and a white wine to enjoy at home. I loved the Wine of the Month- 2018 Sangiovese and the 2020 Sauvignon Blanc. I'm not a big wine drinker like I was before, but Ruby Hill has changed my mind. I may have to start up again. LOL We had a lovely time and didn't feel rushed to leave.
