Steer/ride clear! Three visits to RPM Cycles from Simi Valley (six round trips in total) to tune up a recently purchased 2002 SV650 in very good condition and with less than 30K miles on it. The bike was idling fine and pulling strong, but had issues with fueling/performance while cruising and on deceleration. First Visit: - Six hours labor to adjust the valves ("way out") and go through the carbs ("not too bad"). - $577 (nearly $100 over the estimate). - Poor running on deceleration was corrected. - Very noticeable, unacceptable surging when running in the mid-RPM range (2.5-5.5K). Second Visit: - Additional $91 to tune cables and needles to address surging. - Asked about the additional charge and was told, "That's not what you brought the bike in for originally." Okay.... - Surging in mid-RPM range was corrected. - New problem with consistent, reproducible choppy throttle and bogging/hesitation under normal, spirited acceleration. - Called immediately upon arriving home to inform them of the problem. - Two more diagnostic rides on my part to confirm/understand the behavior so as to be able to relay an accurate description. Third Visit: - They had the bike three days. - Received call saying they can reproduce the problem but that the bike is rideable and that they consider it normal. - When pressed that it certainly is not normal, received comments: o I don't know what you want me to do about it. o We can't do anything else with the carbs (tuning/jetting) because it is illegal. o This is why Suzuki went to fuel injection the next model year. Wow. That they can't get a basic bike like this running correctly should give any prospective customer serious pause. This ranks in the top three worst service experiences during my 40+ years riding and driving across nearly 50 vehicles. Thank you for reading. Steer/ride clear! Note: 1. Dropped off a KLR that was running rough and backfiring. Not only did RPM fix my issues, they went beyond. Adjusted the brakes and clutch lever, rerouted my janky throttle cables, and corrected my barkbusters. The bike is running as good as new and ready for a few trips this fall! I made the mistake of taking my motorcycle to this shop. My motorcycle had a leaky head gasket, but was running normally. I asked Gary to perform a leak-down test, which would tell me the condition of my cylinder compression & valve seals. Gary called me a couple days later to tell me that I had the wrong spark plugs in it, although a quick internet search would've shown that they were the Iridium replacement plugs, same temperature, gap & all. Next, he tried to tell me that my brand new air filter needed to be replaced. It was less than a month old. He continued trying to 'convince' me to let him perform a valve adjustment, which I continued to decline. It happened to be a 20 valve, four cylinder engine and he quoted me 6+ hours to do the work. I laughed at him. Same bike, I had it done it in 4 hours, inside my apartment's carport. When I finally picked up the bike, all he had to tell me was that the bike had been "treated very badly". I asked for the results of the leak-down test in which I had paid the man $90 for. He said he didn't keep them, and that the bike was in really bad shape. What kind of mechanic does work that he can't account for? Stay clear of this rip-off shop. I'll keep taking my motorcycles to Cal Coast, across town. read more

Trouble-free visits and I am happy. You can walk to Winco or watch a movie at Regency Theater which are both one little block away. I feel, to do these guys justice, I need to start from the beginning. I've been to two shops prior to this for various types of work to be done to various bikes (primarily sport bikes). About 3 years ago I was at a shop and had a discrepancy with the owner as i felt I was missing some parts off my bike and they also didn't do one of the jobs I asked them to do while they had the bike apart. After a gentlemanly argument I went home, ordered the parts that were missing, did the job I asked the prior shop to do myself, and looked at other shops that I could go to. That's where RPM came in. A few months later I had some mechanical work that needed to be done that was a little over my head. I called up RPM and they had me bring it in the next day. Upon arrival I immediately hit it off with Gary (and eventually Jodie). The customer service they bring to the table is absolutely fantastic. Simply put, they're the kind of people that are just great to talk to and very knowledgeable to boot! They gave me a call a couple days later and my bike was good to go and back to running like a champ! I've run the gambit of various services with them and have had nothing but rock solid results. I know I can trust the reliability of my bike and its components thanks to this shop, and the last three years of being a devoted customer to them is a testament to that. Let me start by saying I actually live in OC and have my own mechanic for my bikes, I was out here in Ventura visiting my daughter when I had a bit of a fall. Nothing major, but the bike couldn't be ridden home in it's state so I called up a few of the local shops. The first shop wouldn't work on imports, the second wanted $50 and the third didn't answer. Finally Gary here at RPM Cycles answered and said just come on by. I showed up, he looked at it and had everything fixed in no time at all (besides the scuffs of course) and told me to have a safe ride home. The end of the story is this, Gary here runs a great shop and is an absolute wonder to have work on your bikes. Great shop! First, it's full of wonderful people that want to help you (Jody and Gary). Second they have a small selection of bikes but all are really cool and fairly unique. I just went in today to get a brake caliper fixed (made a dumb mistake trying to change my pads) and they had it done in thirty minutes and I ended up staying around talking and hanging out with everyone for hours, wound up buying a tank bag too. I bought a used R1100R that handled terribly, diving into corners, jerky acceleration. I thought it was a bad bike until I took it to Gary. He suggested Pirelli Angel GT tires and a dose of injector detergent. He gave me a great price on the tires, way below list. The bike now runs great, handles great.
