You pay for a diagnosis, but that is deducted if you get your car fixed there - which I think is very fair. You will pay a deposit up front before they work on your car, but that also makes sense. You have been warned: DO NOT TRUST THIS SHOP. They replaced my 2004 Honda Odyssey trans 2 1/2 years ago and it stopped shifting gears (under 30k miles since Roy's replaced it). I went here because they had good reviews and the shop I trust was too busy and couldn't get to it for a couple weeks and I couldn't wait that long w/out a vehicle. After Roy's trans failed I went to my trusted shop and found out Roy's had replaced my Honda van v6 trans with an Acura v6 trans (smaller and weaker - one of the reasons it failed). That explains why when Roy's returned my vehicle the trans never did work/shift like the original trans and the trans fluid was WAY overfilled (they probably put in the van's trans fluid amount into the smaller Acura trans). Also, the shifting issues were due to low pressure because they used a cheap aftermarket torque converter which usually only last 2 - 3 years (the other reason it failed). They also bypassed the normal Honda van radiator trans cooler and incorrectly mounted and used the trans cooler that came with the Acura trans instead (because they used the wrong transmission, an Acura trans instead of a Honda van trans). Don't make the same mistake I did by going here, I will never go back to this shop again. read more

Don't judge a book by its cover. Roy's is on the corner of Raymond and Kimberly in Fullerton's industrial area and it looks a little rough around the edges - not that the shop is dirty or unkempt, because it is well maintained. Rightly or wrongly, this is generally the type of place I avoid. I called Roy's because I wanted to get my transmission fluid changed before an upcoming road trip and I was having trouble finding a reasonable shop that had availability. I spoke with Frank who informed me that they were booked for the week. He told me that he could work on it between jobs if I were willing to let him have the car for the day. On the phone, Frank was professional, knowledgeable and polite, so I agreed. Rather than taking all day, Frank had the car done in just a few hours. And his price for doing the work was about half of the dealership's price. He was not the cheapest (one place offered to do it for $75 less), but I think he was the best choice and I'm very happy. Frank does such a great job and promises to be done when he says. I had take my 2016 Suburban to my local auto care location due to issues with the shifting and a loud noise. They told me it was a bad vacuum pump so $600 later I got the car back and initially it wasn't making the noise but as I drove it up hill, the noise came back and it was still shifting weird. My husbands work truck's (he is self employed) transmission went out while driving to check a job for work the next day. The transmission in my 2013 Ford Fusion Titanium didn't feel right for a few minutes after driving around a very hilly area on one of the hottest days this summer. It felt as if the 3rd gear slipped twice, which is something the transmission had never done before in over 5 years of ownership and 90,000 miles traveled. My first guess was that the transmission got a bit too hot on that day, but I knew it had to be checked by an expert. Transmissions are complex devices and very expensive to repair/replace, so it's best to fix any and all minor issues before they turn in catastrophic failure. So, I took it to Roy's transmission and told Frank about the issue I had experienced. I spoke with him and told him that I wanted a transmission cooler installed and an ATF flush/refill. In the end, the cooler wasn't necessary as the factory one appeared to be functioning well and should be enough to keep the transmission within normal operating temperatures. But what it needed was high-grade ATF and friction modifier, according to Frank. I've been driving the car for about a week and a half and the transmission is working as expected. It does exactly what it's supposed to do without any problems. It's still a bit early to claim victory, but so far so good. Frank was honest and provided an actual estimate range (worst/best case scenario) based on the symptoms I provided. All other businesses either required more information or asked to see the car before a quote could be provided. The whole process was very simple and straightforward. And most importantly, the fix was effective and the price was very reasonable. I'll update my review in a few months after I have driven the car for a few more thousand miles. read more

Not only is he knowledgeable on transmissions, but he treats his customers with dignity and respect. Recently I decided to install my freshly rebuilt transmission and broke an internal part. I removed the transmission and took it back. I explained the problem and Frank knew exactly what I did. He tore the transmission down, repaired it, and reassembled. Any place else I would have (And probably should have) been charged (+ or - $1K). Frank waived the fee and showed me how to prevent the damage when reinstalling. My 66' Chevy was in a wreck about a year and half ago and ended up ruining my transmission/engine, needing to swap out my 327 for a 305 and my 2 speed powerglide transmission for a 700R4 Transmission. I will be succient and comprehensive in this review. I have never left a review, but in this experience one is unequivocally warranted. I stress, if you want exceptional customer service and unparalleled workmanship BRING your vehicle to this place. I had an extremely stubborn transmission leak (my personal mechanic tried 5 times to fix the leak from multiple facets). A reputable transmission shop was my last option. After taking my truck (95 22RE) to a few well known shops for an estimate, I decided to have Roys give me an estimate. I can verily see why they have such grand reviews. The first time - they resealed everything lower in price than Leon's (Garden Grove) and a reputable AAMCO (Orange). Side note - (A reseal was what every shop ascertained was needed to fix all my minor leaks). After Roy's did the reseal, unfortunately the transmission still leaked a small amount (over drive solenoid was faulty, even though my mechanic changed it with a new one). Of course in the reseal they also replaced the two O - rings on the solenoid but there was still a leak somewhere. I called them back and told them it is still leaking somewhere, without any issue they immediately took my Truck in to see why. They spent a diligent 2 days diagnosing the esoteric problem and found out why it still leaked. They replaced the faulty part free of charge. After I got it back, I kept looking underneath thinking no way it is fixed (was the seventh time someone had touched it), but to my amazement it has never leaked since, dry dry dry! It is such a relief that they took the time to figure out why it still leaked and then replaced the problem even though it ate into their profit and time. Amazing exceptional experience here. God bless them and may this shop stay open a long time because it is almost impossible to find a honest automobile shop that shows respect to the customer and gets the job done. I am sure the other well known shops would have added an additional charge for the solenoid and made me feel like they are doing me a favor. read more

I've had two transmission repairs done by Roy's. After the second repair, I started having problems with the car not moving from a start. The issue was VERY intermittent and numerous attempts by Frank to have the problem occur while they were test-driving it, didn't happen. Finally one day I started having problems again so it was back to Roy's. Frank test drove the car and it finally acted up :) Hurray, vindication. They took the car back and pulled the transmission and went completely through the transmission again. The problem turned out to be the pump in the trans and maybe a seal that was bad. I have nothing but praise for Frank and Chester. They're both "good guys" and have done all they could and more to resolve the problem. I highly recommend them! Thanks Guys read more

Great shop! They rebuilt my 47RE in my 2002 Dodge Ram 2500 with a 5.9 Cummins in 2 days. Upon discussion with Frank, we decided to do some upgrades while the transmission was out - mainly a billet torque converter. My tranny had gone downhill gradually over the years (224,000 miles to be exact) and was in need of help. I didn't realize just how much until I got it back! WOW! What a difference! It feels really nice and smooth, shifts nice and feels tight.
