I frequent this pie shop monthly bc I love the square vibe and I absolutely LOVE that they offer a dairy free cherry pie option that's Devine. HOWEVER, the reason for 3 stars is the coffee! I keep thinking every visit will improve and I think it's only gotten worse. We just went for the 2nd time this month and our lattes tasted like they were swirled it in an ash tray! I'm only harsh about it because half of their offerings are coffee drinks. Since I will continue to go, I will be happy to update my review if the coffee situation improves. Also... it's a universal frothing truth that if it whistles or it sounds like an airplane is taking off... your doing it wrong . This just heats up the milk not froths. Have you ever noticed how much people actually detest wedding cake? They make not talk about it much, but wow. Just mention that you're serving pie at your wedding instead of cake and watch those eyes light up like you announced you were giving away puppies and solid gold ingots as wedding favors. Since I was getting married in Round Top, I always knew I'd be serving Royers' pies for dessert instead of cake, simply because they're close and their pies are slices of heaven (pun very intended). What I didn't know is that Royers can actually do a WEDDING pie. I called, expecting to place an order for a buffet of a few pies laid out on the table. Then Tara explained they actually do a tiered wedding pie, just like the cake version, stacking five chocolate fudge pies of diminishing size on top of each other for a towering tower of deliciousness. My guests were absolutely crazy for it, snapping photos like crazy and stampeding over to the table when it was announced time to cut. Afterwards, people thanked me dozens of times over for not serving bland ol' wedding cake. As importantly, Royers was great to work with in the months leading up to the wedding, helping me to estimate what was needed to feed my head count, arranging updated invoices, and being perfectly on time to drop off the final product. For extra, they also returned later in the evening to help cut and serve it on their own dessert plates, which really helped me out in terms of logistics planning. It was all done very seamlessly, and my only regret is that so many guests left early (too cold, those wimps) that we had a whole pie left over in the morning. I had a basic hamburger and pie to go ...the hamburger was awesome ! a great piece of meat perfectly seasoned ,an awesome bun, and fresh veggies ...definitely a great choice, and less than $10... The pies are awesome and average around 5.25 per slice-not exactly a bargain, but they are awesome!...my only complaint is those mason jar tea glasses are not near big enough! it would save them a lot of waitress work to get larger jars. read more

How does this place have one review? Especially since it's about to open a new location in Austin (at the former Toy Joy location on the north end of the drag), I figured more folks would be talking about it. It's been churning out the most famous pies in Central Texas for years. Royers Cafe (http://www.yelp.com/biz/royers-round-top-cafe-round-top#hrid:1JDx958l7oa58AJlR3uQPA) is sort of the Threadgills of Round Top and is the best spot in town for lunch or dinner. The spin-off coffee shop/bakery around the corner, however, is the real treat. Slices are under $5 each and come with or without Amy's Ice Cream. I had lemon custard/blueberry. My wife had (I think) salted caramel fudge. My in-laws had hot pecan ... The selection was incredible. If you're with three friends (or if your group is really hungry) you can head over to the Cafe and get a pie sampler plate--four different slices to share (I didn't see it on the menu at RPH). Edit: never mind. The sampler plate is $25 at the cafe, or you can just come to Royers Pie Haven and get four slices for under $20. For some reason, they're cheaper over here! A week ago we had delicious "Not Your Mother's Apple Pie", a dirty iced chai and a refreshing cup of milk. The environment was clean and charming. Service was good, quick, a little pricy, but understandable for the location and unique experience. This past week we stopped by for ice cream. Unfortunately, the ice cream tasted like store brand vanilla and the chocolate syrup like the chalkiness of Hershey's. I could have bought better quality ice cream at the actual store for much less. I will do that next time on a hot day with the kids. In short: Go for the pie and drinks. This is obviously not an ice cream parlor. read more

After a tough day of shopping at Round Top, our group of 4 stopped in at Royer's Pie Haven for a sweet snack as we had heard a lot about the place. The young ladies were very helpful with their explanations, but the product was just okay. My wife did have the savory Margarita Chicken Pie which was quite tasty, but the Bob's Cherry Pie, the Texas Trash Pie, and the Monster Cookie all left something to be desired! The pie crust was not light and flaky, but rather soft. The cherries could be seen, but were tasteless. Likewise the Trash Pie was lacking in the taste department and the crust was soft as if it had been sitting around all day. Not the worst I have had, but certainly not the best, and for what they charge, I would expect much, much better! read more

I had heard that this place was legendary with regards to the pies that they make. I have to admit that I was salivating at making a visit to this place for years. I while on a trip to Port A decided to make this place my first destination while on that travel adventure across Texas. I have to say that Buds Pies are about as big as Texas. While there we enjoyed some lunch and pie for dessert. I was tempted to buy a whole pie to go, but I chickened out. I SWEAR that big apple pie was a foot thick. read more

Terribly disappointed. We stopped here because we'd heard the hype. Sadly, it's all hype. We ordered a slice of Not Your Mom's Apple Pie, a Ding Dong and a Sprite. The best part was the Sprite. This is the place cheesy inspirational quotes go to die or get written in Sharpie all over every.single.surface. First, when I asked for a chocolate meringue, the counter girl looked at me like I had 3 heads while she barked that "we don't DO cream pies!" What? In Texas at a small town pie shop I can't get a chocolate meringue pie? The crust of the pie has ground pecans in it, yet we were told specifically that it did not. Imagine my surprise when I (who am severely allergic) almost took a bite. The Ding Dong had so much hardened buttercream in it that I had to scrape it out to taste the cake. I should have left it in as the cake was dry and flavorless. And the prices? They are sure proud of their pie. Our bill was $24. Ridiculous. I have no idea what these other reviewers are talking about. First of all: don't get this neat little pie and coffee shop confused with Royer's Café... this is PIE HAVEN and it's HEAVEN. You don't wait to be seated, you order at the counter and seat yourself. No worries. There's plenty of places to sit and enjoy the great atmosphere at Round Top under the shady old live oak trees. Yes, there's a lot of décor to look at - I think it's funny. NO - they don't do cream pies! If you want a cream pie, go to any other dinky restaurant in Texas. They serve the BEST gourmet pies here, ever! I can't see how anyone can be disappointed in Pie Haven and I've had just about every pie they make... it's a good thing I work out a lot. As for the Ding-Dong: you had better be prepared to eat a good bit of chocolate covering and butter-cream goodness or share with a friend. The butter cream icing and chocolate covering is part of the point of having a Ding-Dong to start with. It's massive and it's wonderful! Pie Haven is our weekend treat and it's the best place in Round Top. Period. read more
