I recently visited friends in Berkeley and was not able to get my gel manicure service before I left home. I relied strictly on yelp reviews to find a good salon in the area. I was saying I was very pleased with the gel manicure that I received, except for the use of the filing drill around my cuticles as that always produces some hang nails for me within a week. I called ahead to see if they could take me because I did not have a premade appointment. They were able to quickly fit me in within a couple of hours. I could have gone to wait, but I did not want to waste my time in the area since there's so much to do! The salon is classy inside, with many stations on both sides of the salon. The stations were very clean. It had a soothing vibe and it's probably the largest salon I have ever been to. The pedicure stations are on one side of the salon and the manicure stations are on the other, which was partly why I think the atmosphere was more soothing than some salons where it can get very loud. The gel polish color choices were immense, which was wonderful. The bathrooms were clean as well, which I always use as a determining factor about whether I would go back. As a side note, they had a bidet toilet seat, which I had not seen in a salon before. I only made a note of that, but did not try it. I would definitely go back to this salon again, but I would make it clear that I don't want the filing drill used around my cuticles. read more

I get a basic gentleman's manicure (no gel, paint, or coating) with a buff. I am very "tender-handed" especially when it comes to shaping and my cuticles, in addition I like zero growth and the shape to be as circular or oval as possible. I will say my first visit was impeccable. The guy that checked me in was friendly and fun, and after I made my concerns with him, he chose Lisa because she is experienced and has very light touch. My tech went completely old school meaning she even did the buff by hand, not with the rotary tool, to ensure my comfort. My nails weren't "as rounded as I like", so she kept adjusting them until I was satisfied. She was polite then entire time and the wrist and arm massage was just the right pressure. I'm a frequent customer here because It's close to where I live and they have a great color selection. This is 4 out of 5 stars for a few reasons: 1) poor consistency. If you're lucky with a good nail tech, you'll get someone who is thorough with nail shape and texture of polish. Otherwise the work is often sloppy. 2) aggressiveness. Some nail techs here will have you walk out with bleeding cuticles. 3) this is new, but the last time I got shellac removed a few days ago, I noticed the aluminum foil was being reused and it gave me the ick. Not sure if they hygienic at all. Had I known, I would've requested her to grab a new set of cut outs but I figured it out too late. Not all nail techs do this btw. Seems just one. 4) pricing is as expected these days. I do shellac polish change for finger nails only and it comes out $30 which is criminal but average for nail salons. TIP: make sure you have cash on you because they don't accept putting the tip on the credit card. This is a hassle. They do have an ATM machine but like come on... make a venmo. read more

Cons: Not worth the money for the poor quality. Did not fully take off my prior nail polish (see picture). Overall poor quality and rushed job. The scrub was painful. The nail polish must have been old because of the poor-quality way it went on and after an hour did not dry properly. Ordered basic paint and it was $50 for mani-pedi plus had to tip in cash. Used foot cheese-grater like scrapers which can potentially spread infection and are (as some sources on the internet would suggest) banned for health reasons. Do not waste your time or money going here. I came in to get chrome gel nails with tips and they charged me $75. I was fine with that at the time because when I left, they looked fine. However, within less than one week, all of my nails began to chip and come off. In the photo, you can see the first nail tip that broke off, just a few days after getting them done simply by opening a car door. Within a week, all of the tips that they had "glued" on had completely come off and the majority of the gel polish left on my fingers had chipped and come off as well. They were done horribly and it is clear that they did not put in any effort or time. So disappointed to scrub this salon from my list, but walking in w/healthy longs nails and in less than two weeks having 8 of 10 nails snagging on everything and splitting so far into the nail bed that I'm bleeding is unacceptable. I used to frequent this salon regularly, so I felt confident dropping in periodically for convenience as I'd done for this gel mani + pedi service. I've to wear bandages on three fingers to protect them from catching, pulling and bleeding. The nails were cut back, so having none of these issues w/natural nails at least 2X the length is maddening. They sell gel as a way to prevent breakage, but it's going to take my nails at least a month or more to recover. The other 5 nails are nubs as I had to cut them where the sides started to split from being weakened. The ends of nails of course chipped from cutting. Just a nightmare experience. The gel was done by the manager who was busy commanding the room -- her manner was gruff, but there IS a lot going on at once. I can look beyond that part of the experience. The untenable part is that by the end of week two, I have 8 nails that looked like I grind rocks for a living. Very disappointed. read more

Once she cut my cuticles I asked if ok to run and pay meter across the street. She made me pay then and there which was fine but that shouldn't end service. I just moved here from Phoenix, AZ and my nails were in pretty bad shape after the heavy lifting involved in my move. I had a dip manicure from my previous salon that was about 3 weeks old. Several of my nails were chipped and broken. I'm not sure the name of my nail tech (wish I had gotten that!), but she was quick and did a great job. I am pretty picky about my nails, and when someone works quickly, that can sometimes mean the work isn't great. My nail tech did a beautiful job on my dip manicure, so her quickness was not a bad thing at all. They have a large selection of gel, dip, and regular polish colors to choose from. They are very busy in there, but they manage things well. Lots of pedicure chairs and manicure stations. I called before coming to make an appointment. Let me start with the good. Although I do not come regularly, I have been a long time patron of Royal Oak Nails (several years). The primary reason I continue to come back is because the quality of the manicure/pedicure services are excellent. Also, they have many nail techs, pedicure/nail chairs, so there is not usually a long wait. In addition, the prices are reasonable. That said, for at least the past year, the service has not been 5 star. There are things that are easy to do such as greet someone pleasantly when they enter. This just has not happened for a very long time. I understand they are busy, but a pleasant greeting, or a few times even a greeting at all, is a very small thing that can take your business from good to great. Also, the techs have changed quite a bit. The new techs still provide a quality manicure/pedicure (except in just one case) but the last few I have had have not been personable. This has nothing to do with a language barrier or speaking limited English. The male tech I had last week had an attitude and was borderline rude (his demeanor). It seemed like he didn't want to work that day or maybe he just didn't want to service me. He pushed my hands and feet in a rude way while providing my services. He did a very good job on both my manicure/pedicure but his level of customer service was terrible. To me, excellent customer service can take a business from good to great. This is why Royal Oak Nails cannot receive 5 stars even though I leave with a beautiful manicure/pedicure. I have been continually trying to find a new spot that is more of the total package but have had no luck. I try a new spot, it doesn't work out, then I come back to Royal Oak Nails. Vin played no games when he did my nails. I have only had dip nails once before and I wasn't too sure if I wanted it again but now I am a believer. My nails turned out beautifully. When he finished my nails I was mesmerized by my nails that it made me forget I did not receive a lot of the things that shops normally offer you when you're paying a lot of money to get your nails done. I noticed that when a lot of people got their nails finished they would offer you a hand massage or even rub in the oil on your fingers to ensure you are not getting it on your belongings. My nail tech did not do either which was a disappointment. I spent close to $50 and he was more focused on getting the other client in his chair then making me feel like I was a wanted customer. The nails are beautiful don't get me wrong but I am bring on service as well. This place caters more to getting as many people in the chair and hope they come back.
