Hit upon this place a couple of months back when I was looking to get some waxing done - bikini, leg, and eyebrow, to be precise. I originally went to Tantra because they've pretty much got the cheapest rates around for spa-style waxing. Go ahead, search the rest of the Metro area for cheaper - you won't find it. Of course, you might be able to land something less expensive at a seedy strip mall somewhere, but if somebody's going to be slathering hot wax all over choice parts of my body and tearing the hair out, I'll pay a higher premium to be assured of an infection-free experience. However, that doesn't mean I want to be out a month's paycheck over hair removal. That being said, Tantra is a dream. As others have mentioned it's in a bit of a bizarre location, but not hard at all to find and has plenty of parking. The salon itself has a very "Eastern temple" feel about it, with wicker furniture, wooden icons, dark maroon walls and lots of Indian fabrics. The staff is all very attentive and really enjoyable to talk with, even if they ARE ripping hair out from your body at the root. But the whole experience was excellent. They served me tea before the treatment, and the room was very clean and peaceful without having that "you're-at-the-doctor's" sterile feel to it. Kristen did my waxing and, well, I mean, it went the way all waxings go. I found her services efficient, and I was happy with my results. No infections, no undue soreness, and the products used were Aveda, so everything was extremely high quality. It's also nice to go to a spa for these sorts of things, as it makes the whole experience seem much more plush as opposed to going to a regular hair salon for the same services. If you want the feel and expertise of a spa crossed with the reasonable pricing of a mid-tier salon, Tantra is the name of the game. The one thing that was more expensive than what I normally go for was the eyebrow waxing (18$), but I do have to say that Kristen's a master at it. I don't know if I've ever had my eyebrows shaped as well at any other establishment. At any rate, I got the whole job done for just under 100 dollars (with generous tip included), which is definitely not an unfair price considering the quality of the services and the considerate-and-friendly-without-being-cloying attention of the staff. So if you're looking for a spa experience that is both luxurious but yet not bank-breaking, I highly, highly, highly suggest Tantra. I'm not a spa maven, but I felt pampered here without being foolishly overindulgent and I left feeling like a million bucks. Check it out, ladies (and gents!), you won't be disappointed. read more

I absolutely love this place. I would go here just because it smells so good. I've been here for bikini waxes, massages and a facial. Everyone here is sweet, gentle and fun to be around. You feel completely relaxed during your visits. I give it 4 stars because the facial I had was rough. I didn't realize they scrub your face that hard and I was left with bumps on my face for a day and my skin was sore. It was my first facial and I expected a gentle experience. Maybe I chose the wrong treatment, but either way....it wasn't a pleasant experience. The next day my skin felt better and the bumps diminished. Excellent reviews on Yelp Upon arrival you are instantly hit with a calming aroma that wafts around the entire spa. You will be greeted promptly by the friendly staff, they will also offer water/tea. Molly does a great pedicure, and is very concerned about your comfort. Lola is an eyebrow magician and facial/massage wonder. The staff seems to want to get to know you while you are there. They stock little treasures in the front room including Aveda and Woodsprite Organic Body lines to name a couple. The spa sits on the second floor of a small retail building. There's a door and narrow stairway up to the second floor. As you emerge from the climb, you transition to a calming environment that has the right scents, background music, and visuals to put you in the right place. There's a small shop area that has many Aveda products and other women-would-like-it stuff. Tantra has become my regular place for massages. I've gone through a couple of people, and have settled on Nicole. Many have a standard routine that they go through. Nicole talks to you in the beginning to find out what's going on and then she feels the areas that tense and need some work. I'm typically very tight in shoulders, neck, and lower back. She does a great job in getting those muscles to relax. Also, she incorporates some stretching which is unique and helpful. It's hard to find a reliable massage since they vary widely. I've found my go-to person/place now! I've also had mani-pedi from Molly. Not having much to compare or relate to, I thought it was very good. If I did it more regularly, I would go to Molly. Tantra is a low-key place that is not overly commercial and has great environment. More of a hippy-ish/new-agish place than modern spa that belongs in a fancy shopping mall. It's a great place to go if you are less suburban and looking for uniqueness. read more

Like all Michiganders who have battled through the relentless winter storms this season, I was in need of a little retreat; somewhere I could restore my weary, winter bones and chapped wind-burned skin. Having heard good things about Tantra, I decided to give them a try and booked a bliss package (90 minute facial/90 minute hot stone massage.) It's an Aveda spa, so the moment you walk in you are greeted by the classic Aveda "Shampure" aroma. Soothing, for sure. The decor is done in earth tones and has an Eastern/Bohemian vibe going on. They also have a "green boutique" - full of Aveda and Zum products. It's curated with other lovely items, like pieces of art, scarves, journals and bags. I was welcomed quite nicely into the spa, offered water and a nice selection of Yogi teas. It helped me to settle right in and chillax. So onto the services - Facial - I had Lola perform my facial and she was incredible. I feel like she really took the time to perform each step of the facial thoroughly. We chatted easily (not too much, not too little) about beauty products and different techniques. The massage she performed on my shoulders, arms, neck and feet was AH-MAZING. Massage - Susie performed my hot stone massage. It is in my all-time, top five favorite massages of all time. Susie is a gifted masseuse. She is intuitive. She knew how much pressure I could tolerate. And the scalp massage. Oh. The. Scalp. Massage. It was pure bliss. It was like time stopped and I didn't even know where I was anymore. Yeah. It was that good. So yeah, five stars. Value is completely aligned with the price of the services. Wonderful, relaxing atmosphere. Talented service providers. Completely enjoyable experience. THE BEST pedicure I've ever had! Plus a knock-your-socks-off great massage to boot! I went for a massage and pedicure and was treated like a queen all afternoon long by Tantra's wonderful staff. Kristen's massage was amazing. She really tailored her treatment to exactly what I wanted. Not just your run-of-the-mill back and body rub. I've gotten massages all over the world and this one compares to my favorite masseuses in Sweden or Turkey. And Diane's pedicure was out of this world. Nearly 2 hours of TLC for my toes. How do you beat that? Also, it should be noted that these are two of the sweetest, nicest ladies you could meet. The staff was wonderfully attentive and kind. The space is very Zen without being too fussy or "salonish" (that over-stylized, over-polished look that can tend to feel sterile and cold). The prices are very reasonable, especially considering the level of attention you get. And the monthly specials on the wall looked really good too (waxing treatments at deep discount. This might be the fastest I've ever written a review, considering I just got home from my appointment an hour and a half ago! But I had to sing their praises right away...it was THAT good. I visited Tantra today for some pampering prior to my upcoming wedding. The spa was a bit difficult to locate initially, situated on the top floor of a free-standing retail building. But the interior is beautifully appointed. It struck just the right chord - clean but not "clinical," plush but not overdone, zen but not to the point of cheesiness. Every person I encountered was warm, friendly, and very welcoming; not even a remote air of snobbiness to be found from anyone (the main reason I avoid a lot of spas in the Royal Oak/Birmingham area). I loved their retail area and the unique products they carry (in addition to the more well-known line Aveda). I got a one hour massage with Suzie and a pedi/shellac mani with Molly. I was so overwhelmingly satisfied with both services. The massage was first, and it just may have been the best massage I have ever had. I carry a lot of tension in my neck and upper back, and Suzie managed to alleviate that while still giving me a comfortable and relaxing experience. She was so conscientious about pressure, temperature, and all the "little" things that can truly make or break a massage. One of my favourite parts was the scalp massage - just absolutely wonderful. The whole treatment was fabulous and just what the doctor ordered for a slightly stressed-out bride two days before the wedding. Next I had my pedi and my mani with Molly. Again, she was very conscientious and friendly, also very personable and easy to talk to. My pedicure was great - she removed my dead skin without any discomfort for me and polished my nails beautifully. My shellac manicure was also great. I have short, thin, "eggshell" nails that I have always been embarrassed of but she truly made them look beautiful. Couldn't ask for more for a wedding manicure. I scheduled a facial and Rosemary Mint pedicure for Tantra in 8/12. As I entered to walk upstairs, I noticed that it was quite hot, and there was no air conditioning. I was worried about that. I had never had a facial, and my facial with Yvette was amazing. The pedicure was nice also, but the brochure and online states it should include a paraffin dip which I did not receive. I also got the Tantra pedicure, and not the Rosemary mint, so there was a mixup with my appointment. I guess they don't do the paraffin dips anymore, due to being a green spa. I really enjoyed my spa experience, and plan to go back again. As far as no A/C, I forgot to ask if it was out, but it was not too hot, I think because of the ceiling fans. read more

I am a fan of spas, but I am also super picky. I don't have much luck with finding what I like. It doesn't help that I'm not really a fan of massages. Crazy, I know. Well, I injured my neck and I have "Boulders" in my shoulders according to my chiropractor. This is sadly true. I carry all of my tension in my upper back & shoulders. He said that I need to get those knots worked out in order to get relief. Thanks to Laura K, I decided to check Tantra out. I set up a 30 minute massage with Nicole. I wanted to take it slow and didn't see a need for 60 minutes when all I need is my back done. I'm on a mission! Nicole did an abosultely wonderful job. I have had several massages in my life, and I have to say she is the best. She's not too rough and doesn't make me feel like she's just giving me a back rub. I really enjoy her service and will continue to go to her to keep my back healthy! I think the prices are reasonable too. It's also very private. I was the only person in the place during both of my massages. I'm totally ok with that. My next service is a pedicure by the lovely Molly, who I have heard is great! I first went here about two years ago when searching for a place to get body waxing which makes me nervous just saying those two words together. They use Aveda products which was a major bonus for me trying the location. I'm so glad I gulped down my anxiety and let them do their work because not only were they extremely professional but made me feel like "this bikini wax is no big deal." The bed has a heated pad which was great since I was only wearing a wrap around robe. Love the calming music and scents. Since my first time I've tried a few other estheticians but I found the gal that works best with me and I'll move my schedule around so I can have my appointment with her. If you want a body waxing the main tip I have is to grow your desired waxing area hair to banshee/yeti/caveman length. The longer it is the easier it makes it for the esthetician. it it's too long then i'm sure they can just cut it. But this also helps your little baby hairs grow in too- so they can remove as much as possible at the same time. Sounds undesirable but your results will be- so I always stop here before a vacay. I used to only have ONE DAY at a pool because of razor burn. Thanks to Tantra this is no more!! I have not tried the other services yet but it is always a possibility. read more

I'm finally breaking up with this place after several bad experiences. I have gotten brow waxes here maybe ten times, and a few too many times my skin came off too, leaving me with a scab under my brow for several days. However, this place is really close to home and has flexible hours, which I appreciate, so I kept scheduling. Yesterday, I called and scheduled an appointment for this morning. I showed up today and they forgot to add my appointment to the calendar. Instead of an apology or an attempt to reschedule, I got a shrug of the shoulders, telling me they were booked solid and couldn't help me. I recently went to Tantra and had a facial, which was great, and also a brow wax. The woman performing my facial was very kind and good at her job, but also waxed the inside/ front part of my eyebrow off. I didn't notice it at first due to the lighting and talking a lot during my facial with her. I noticed it when I went home, and emailed Yvette, the owner...she agreed to refund me $20 per my request, but denied to refund me my tip, or even offer me a service because I was rightfully unhappy about my brow wax. She did not take accountability about what happened, but instead said "I'm sorry you feel like you no longer like the way your eyebrows look". It wasn't that I didn't like them, due to not liking the arch or something else, it was that a rather big portion of my eyebrow was waxed off. I think that she handled the situation a bit snobbishly, and would expect a more honest, vulnerable and "real" response. It's as if she was too concerned about liability and her reputation to just be honest and open with me- and be genuine. I would've not canceled my facial next month if she were to just have been kinder to me. I would expect more for a small, local spa in Ferndale. Sorry, but I only support business that are humble about their mess-ups. read more

Really? No one has reviewed Tantra yet? Shame on you! Tantra is on the 2nd floor of a building that is kind of "off the strip" of the 9&Woodward downtown of Ferndale. (It's in the Iris Fashion Boutique building on the corner of Cambourne and Woodward) It is totally unexpected, and totally worth the trip. The best word that I could use to describe the vibe at Tantra is earthy.. and that might not even be a good word to describe it at all. Bohemian maybe. I discovered Tantra a couple of years ago when I was trying to think of a good "thank you" to my mom and sisters for throwing me a bridal shower. Tantra had a girls night out type of party package where you could get up to 8? people together to get mini-spa services. We did 15 minutes facials, chair massages and manicures. They have a cozy little room where we waited between services and were able to bring in our own treats and beverages to enjoy as well. It was great and they all LOVED it. I was hooked- and have since been back with my husband for massages and facials. Yvette, the owner, gives AMAZING facials. It is so relaxing- and they inlclude hand, foot and scalp massages as well. I am not a "spa" kind of girl- but to me, this is not what I expect from a spa. It is better- way better. It has a more homey feel, it is more private, and it is amazing. read more

I bought my mom a gift certificate for a facial, massage and pedicure at Tantra for Mother's Day. While I have never been to Tantra myself, I chose it based on all of the glowing Yelps. My mom doesn't have a whole lot of spa-going experience, so I wanted to send her somewhere she would feel comfortable. She finally got around to using it this past weekend and couldn't say enough good things. She said that the staff was friendly, warm and attentive, the atmosphere was inviting and relaxing, and the services and products were top-notch. I have been meaning to write this review ever since I returned from my family visit in Michigan. Tantra is an absolutely wonderful spa, top notch in every way! I recently took my parents and treated my self. My mom received the Peace facial/massage package and my father got the Assudha body and back treatments. I received the Self-Renewing facial and back treatment. We were all in heaven, and the relaxation effect lasted long after we had left the spa. Yvette, Nicole, Molly and Heather were fantastic.
