Exceeded my expectations. Amanda administered an amazing massage. That alone was 5-star. The establishment itself is clean, inviting, and thoughtful about the details. Yet, what really set it apart for me today was the customer service. I arrived for my much anticipated appointment (looking forward to it for days...) only to discover, I had no appointment. Not sure if it was a glitch in the online appointment software, or operator error on my end. But no matter--I was disappointed. Disappointed in the way you can only be when you think you are in for a blissful hour long massage only to discover--you're not. I've been meaning to write this for a while. If you're in the Detroit, Windsor, Canada or the Toledo, Ohio area and you're serious about massage or just want a great massage go to Breckel's Massage in Grosse Pointe, MI. The owner has been a massage therapist for thirty years and is very involved with her community. The other therapists are knowledgeable, patient, and cater to each client's need. All of the therapists have been practicing for many years and continue honing their skills and their ongoing massage education. Yes, there are other places to get a massage in the Detroit area. But, there are BIG differences in what you get. Time spent actually receiving a massage: The industry standard is usually 50 minutes or 80 minutes, at Breckel's its 60 or 90 minutes. Believe me there's a lot you can get out of an extra 10 minutes. Environment: You can get a massage elsewhere, like a casino. But do you really want to get a massage, be relaxed and then go out to a smoky, loud, neon lit casino just to get to your car to go home? Doesn't sound very relaxing or healing does it? Money: Yes, there are less expensive options when getting a massage. You can try those chains like Massage Envy or Massage Green, but they tend to hire new therapists right out of school. Some of them can be good therapists too, but more often than not they just don't have enough experience or knowledge to be of use. The therapists at Breckel's continue learning their craft at workshops and classes held all over the state and country. And see above about timing. Are you really getting a cheaper deal when you average the actual time receiving massage? It might be $10 cheaper but it also may be 15-20 minutes less. Remember the old saying- you get what you pay for. In conclusion, if you're serious about getting a good massage, if you value your time and your money, and if you want to feel better - there's only one choice in the Detroit metro area. Not sure where all these 5 star reviews are coming from but they roped me in. Went to see Sandy for a 90 minute massage. She had about 3 moves- got into some of the muscles in my back but my lower back is more sore today (and not in a good way). Arms and legs were worse- just rubbed her hand up and down forever with no actual working of the muscles- not how a real masseuse would have worked on someone . Might be ok for a 30 minute massage but 90 was a complete waste. I left early-won't be back. read more

Yesterday my wife and I went here to start her birthday. We had Cindy and Christina. Both of us left refreshed and relaxed. They were incredibly professional and acommodatjng. They asked specific questions to customize each of our treatments. We even got to chose the type of music and the scent we preferred. I've only gone here for one massage, but my masseuse was very professional. I didn't feel rushed and was pleasantly surprised that my massage lasted for the entire time. I've been to other places that charge for an hour but only massage for 50 minutes, taking time from the front end and back end for getting undressed/dressed. I've gone to Unique twice for a one hour massage and she is incredible! She just started working at Breckels but has massage experience from before (and you can tell). She is super sweet and very good. I hate when I go to get a massage and it's an hour and they only massage for 50 minutes. Breckels makes sure the massage is actually a full hour. They're thorough and conscientious. The actual place has a little bit of a weird vibe for me. I think it's just really dark and gloomy in the building. I can't quiet put my finger on it. There's a parking spot in the front that says one hour parking but the people at Breckles says it is fine to park there without putting in any coins (I never have any). read more

Decided to treat myself to a last minute massage and found Breckels was close and had really good reviews. I was able to book online Friday night for a next day appointment...score! I have to say this was the best massage I've ever had. The place was clean, cozy, room was nice and Betsy was phenomenal! I have been to Breckels 3 times now and i found their massages, rooms, and personnel to be outstanding! I have knots and stiffness in my upper back due to years of strain in my job and dental work. My massage each time by Amanda has left me feeling relief and calm by end of session. I like this is not part of a beauty salon but is nicely put together in a Holistic atmosphere. I honestly don't know how this place stays in business. I recently had a massage there at the last minute. And the first thing out of my mouth was, "is this someone's house?" There was a huge dog bed in the hallway. The woman told me it was their "therapy dog." I love animals and have been vegan for 20 years, but I don't think any animal should be in a spa or massage clinic. The place reeked of dog and was dirty. There were cardboard boxes lying around. If you want a relaxing spa environment do not go here. The first thing I did was smell the sheets when I was in the massage room. Thankfully they did not smell like dog so I proceeded. The massage itself was decent but the massage therapist could have been more attentive. She asked me if I preferred music or no music, and I stated my preference was "no music." She forgot and turned on the music and I had to remind her of my preference. read more

I recently moved to Michigan and was worried about finding a massage place as good as the one I left behind in my previous town. I am a long-time migraine sufferer, and I have found that many of my migraines are triggered by muscle tension in the upper back, shoulders, and neck. I consider a good masseur someone who knows exactly how to target the areas that are causing the problems and quickly bring about relief. I received just that at Breckels. Megan was amazing and was able to effectively work away the pain in 30 minutes. It was obvious that she was a professional and knew the technique of deep tissue well. She was very receptive to suggestions and was careful to find out exactly why I had come and what I needed. I have had multiple experiences at other establishments where I felt I had paid for a deep tissue massage and got only a weak version of a Swedish massage--if that. The setting is comfortable and quiet (an old house it appears). The therapists and staff are kind and welcoming. And the massage therapy is great.
