Butter Chicken lunch special

Our group arrived around 12:30 on a Thursday afternoon in January. There is street parking in front of the restaurant but there is also a parking lot behind the building. It wasn't busy, and we were seated right away. The interior is large and spacious with high ceilings. They offer alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. Our server was friendly and helpful with the menu options. There is a special lunch menu, but you can also order from the main menu. The specials include an entree, cucumber/tomato salad, rice and choice of an appetizer. It all comes out together on one large platter. Once we ordered, it took a while to get our food, but we had a large group. The portions are generous, and everyone enjoyed what they ordered. I had the Butter Chicken with medium spice, and it was the right heat for me. The small cucumber salad came with a light vinaigrette that was very good. For my appetizer, I ordered the samosa which I didn't care for. It was a little greasy and mushy inside which just didn't appeal to me. The naan was delicious! The menu items are a bit on the pricey side but that seems to be the way of the world these days. We would return!

My husband and I love Indian food and this place is pretty good. We ordered takeout while staying in an airbnb here in Waynesboro. The staff was friendly and our food came out very quickly. When you order your food, they ask you what spice level you want (mild, medium, hot, extra hot, Indian hot). I chose medium for my paneer tikka masala and my husband chose hot for his chicken vindaloo. The spice levels are definitely not normal for Indian food. Neither of our dishes had much spice. It would be great for anyone that doesn't like heat, but if you do make sure to get the hottest option. The food was good, but not the best Indian food I've ever had. However, this is probably the best option around. The restaurant itself is very nice and would be perfect for a romantic dinner. We would probably return if we come back this way again!

The food was delicious! They have a lot of vegetarian options. My husband and I came for lunch and split the Navratilova Korma, Paneer Makhani, and Aloo Paratha. It was all so flavorful, I would order again! We also tried the masala chia tea. We will definitely be back again!

Vegetable Thali, Royal Indian Restaurant, Waynesboro

I don't live in Waynesboro, but I was there several nights over the course of the last week. I stopped at Royal Indian my first night there ended up coming back for two more visits -- the third time, my kids and husband were with me. They are open later than most restaurants, which helped me out since I had an obligation until 8pm. Most restaurants were closed by that point. The service was consistently excellent, the owner came to the table each time to check on us (especially when he was concerned we would find some of the dishes too spicy! He wanted to make sure we were ok -- very sweet). I love palak paneer, and this restaurant has my *absolute favorite version of palak paneer* across central Virginia. Also excellent, the goat curry (mild for my daughter, "Indian hot" for my husband -- both got rave reviews). Our server recommended the chicken lababdar and the methi chicken -- they were both excellent -- very similar, but definitely not the same. My son liked the Indo-Chinese dumplings and the vegetable pakora a lot; the sesame naan was delicious and the jalapeno pakora were great if you like spicy things! The first night I was there, I ordered the vegetable thali and it was wonderful. I am attaching a photo here. One thing that looked GREAT but I wasn't going to be drinking alcohol before driving 45 minutes home to Charlottesville were the COCKTAILS! Very creative and looked delicious. I think next time I go, I will order the paneer lababdar, the palak paneer, and some kind of naan. The mango lassis (my kids let me have a few sips!) were also absolutely delicious. I also like that the hot chai comes unsweetened.

Delicious food with friendly service. They seem a little overwhelmed right now, being new, but I'd expect this to be a great addition to the downtown Waynesboro restaurant collection.

Chilli Paneer Dry

Wonderful meal, wonderful drinks, wonderful service and wonderful restaurant overall. I have tried Royal India Palace so many times since their opening and I have never been disappointed. The food and drinks have always been great and I've never not liked anything. The ambience is always great. Always recommend this place and will be coming back again and again. Thank you for bringing such wonderful restaurant in Waynesboro

Whoa. I haven't found a gem like this in a while…read more Amidst a long drive what a delight to find an Indian food truck in this strange truck stop area in Virginia. All your basic northern Indian dishes are here both veg and meat. There is chicken curry, goat curry, several dals, aloo gobi etc. I had a solid dal and an oily and flavorful goat curry on the bone. Rice and naan are available. Note some dishes like the chicken curry and dals are ready to go but dishes like aloo gobi are made fresh and will take 15-20min. You can avoid the wait by calling ahead at 540-771-0011. You may ask how will I ever eat Indian food in the car? Well there are some picnic tables if you care to dine on site. Otherwise dal is a very good self contained choice. The world would be a better place if there was one of these spots at every truck stop in the USA. So pull off, order some food (get some gas while you wait) and come back for a refreshing feast. Nice people by the way!

There are a couple of tables if you want to sit down and eat but it's really a take out spot inside the gas station mini mart. They were doing a pretty steady business with truckers that seemed quite familiar with their food. That should tell you a little something.

From the outside it looks like a strip mall restaurant. So I was not expecting much. I didn't see a lot of people going in alone many people in the window, so I thought I was going to be the only guest at 11:30. Man, I was so wrong. I walked in and found that there was an entire dining room inside, and it was pretty busy for a lunch crowd. The waitress was nice and had good energy. She gave me a table and a menu. The choices were pretty standard. I went with the chicken 65 and the Korma. She asked me for a spice level and I told her to light me up. The lunch menu came with a salad or soup choice and I opted for the salad. It was very good.... Fresh and light. The food arrived and it was great. The appetizer was cooked fresh and tasty. The main course came with naan and a side dish. It was spicy as hell. And it was good. Very very good. I would recommend it if you are looking for Indian in Charlottesville.

Service is table-side but you pay at the desk. Portions are large and most people end up taking a box home. I'd say for two people, get two dishes to share and a single appetizer, too. They will allow a lot of alterations to your dishes and are careful to meet your spice tolerance. Do not expect a lot of answers on what exactly this or that dish is; the wait staff know how to put the orders in but not the intricacies of what separates chicken tikka from chicken tikka masala. The space is small, but I have gone with my wife and with 12 people and had no problems getting seating. Do check the times they are open, because if it's within 30 minutes of closing they can probably only get your food for you to-go. Most people like the skewered meat or korma-type foods. I'd say an order of naan is NOT sufficient for two people, so order double or a mix of two types (they have over 6 to choose from). If you don't do meat, they have fish dishes. And if you are vegetarian you'll be fine, but probably not a lot for a vegan. They also have a fusion East Asian section at the back of the menu. I've tried it and like it, but I'd say it's a bit heavier than the rest of the menu. TL;DR - If you don't know what something is, use their wifi and google it. It's a simpler process than asking the waitress who will ask the cook who will explain it to her so she can remember half of it and explain it to you. Also, usually a good idea to pair one meat dish with one vegetarian if you are splitting with someone. Maybe try one thing new and one old trusted item (saag paneer).

They did put out a single table for me to eat there, but it has nothing to offer in the way of ambience. Weather may also be a factor, and when I arrived at the post opening time they were still setting up. The reason I have a high opinion of the place is not any of those things, but that it offers the distinctive home-cooked taste of a cuisine that is not otherwise available in the region to my knowledge. It is vegetarian South Indian and most of the options revolve around lentils and spices. I sampled a preparation I hadn't had before of ildi, a steamed rice and lentil cake, with some mouthwatering spicy powder. My spicy dosa, which I made it clear I wanted really spicy, was indeed fiery, but also possessed the delightful crispness and mix of sour and savory flavors distinctive to this cuisine. I also note that sometimes the salt in sambar overwhelms me but I didn't have a particularly tough time here; the flavors of the spices were enough without the ridiculous oversalting that some restaurants do. It is a taste that I would be happy to come back for in the near term and I would try virtually everything they offer.
