I went to Himalayan Fusion with my friend (local) and tried the Chicken Biryani and Chicken Tikka Masala, and both dishes were absolutely fantastic. The biryani was fragrant, colorful, and perfectly spiced. Just the right amount of heat! The chicken was tender, and the portion was generous enough that I had leftovers (and it was just as good the next day). The tikka masala was rich, creamy, and full of flavor. The sauce was delicious and the chicken was cooked perfectly. Service was friendly, welcoming, and kind. We were served quickly and had a wonderful chat with our waiter. The restaurant had a warm, welcoming vibe, with the most stunning artwork above the bar. If you're craving great Indian/Himalayan flavors, Himalayan Fusion is absolutely worth the visit. Himalayan Fusion provides simple, no frills, no nonsense, quality Indian/Himalayan food on a self-serve buffer style system. Unlike other buffets, they did not meet me at the door and escort me to a table, ask me to order a drink, or instruct me on how and where to eat/drink. Rather, you seat yourself and help yourself to the buffet line when ready. They automatically brought me glasses of water without asking, which I appreciated. The servers were very polite and helped me pay my bill immediately when asked. The buffet selection is pretty limited with only 8 or so large stations at one time. This may be a problem for picky eaters but I found most dishes quite tasty - curried chickpeas, cucumber tomato salad, chicken masala, sticky basmati rice, daal, lentil stew, garlic nan, among others. I certainly got my fill and was satisfied with the quality of the food which was fragrant and a bit spicy but not overly so. On the downside, the food in the communal serving dishes do not stay hot that long and some of my food was a bit cold, disappointing when eating curried chickpeas and chicken. But fresh pans come out of the kitchen into the serving area every 10 or 20 minutes, so you can get hot food if you are willing to be patient. The self-service buffet area is a bit hard to navigate. It's not that spacious and the square layout of the room is better as a dining room than a buffet area because it lacks any sort of natural route for diners to pass through. Expect the service area to get crowded and jammed up as departing people squeeze past people coming in. Don't expect a large buffet line with one directional traffic like you would at on a cruise ship or dedicated buffet restaurant. This is a normal sized restaurant that dedicates space to a self-service model. I would certainly recommend this to friends and return for another meal. read more

Loved this restaurant for its ambiance, its food & the enthusiasm & caring of its owner, Priti (she may have pronounced her name Briti, so I apologize if I am wrong). On a bone-chilling cold day this month, we were glad to find warmth in colorful wall art, pillows, lunch buffet dishes & a nice conversation with Priti, who emigrated from Nepal when she was 17, lived in Washington, DC & came to Charlottesville with her husband. She asks each customer if they are enjoying their meal & checks in on customers that you can tell from the conversation that they are regulars & that personal attention is rare these days in restaurants. Lunch buffet dishes run the gamut of Indian, Nepalese & even a bit of Chinese; all good & served in frequently refilled & lovely copper-colored chafing dishes. I even got a wave & a smile from the gentlemen working in the see-through kitchen as they prepared naan after naan. There is a full bar & bar seating, wall murals both colorful, funky & one of them even a little scary. Seating is on chairs & wall benches with long cushions & many pillows. Very comfy. The cardamom-inflected milky tea & milled wheat with sugar (Suji Halwa) were the perfect ending before we went back out to brave the cold. read more

I have tried three middle east curry places in this area. This is my least like one. I am not authentic, so I don't know how it tastes for the authentic people. But the curry just does not have the nice and intriguing smell or taste as I normally expect to have. And the spliciness is higher than other restaurants. The meat was chunky and super dry to chew. I enjoy eating Tibetan, Nepalese, and Indian food so I was really excited to try a restaurant that offered some of all three. First difficulty: I ordered chicken momos as an appetizer and lamb korma for my main...only for the waitbeing to return in 3 minutes to tell me there was no lamb available. In this place, that is a disaster, since they offer lamb, chicken and veggie options for their dishes and one-third was out of commission on a Wednesday night. Worse: why not make sure the staff knows this so they can prevent that order in the first place and steer guests to other choices from the start? (In restaurant trade, that's known as "86", as in "86 the chicken kiev" so no more orders are taken for food that can't be prepared). Okay, so I revised my order from chicken momos and lamb korma to something different: veggie momos and chicken korma. 3 minutes later, my waitbeing has returned--they don't have enough veggie momos to make a full order (8). No problem, I said, I'll take a half order. 25 minutes later, the whole order shows up simultaneously, momos and korma, served all at once. Now, by this point I'd eaten my way to the bottom of the complimentary papadums and was wondering when my order might show. I will say, my food was hot, freshly made, and tasted good, so full marks on that front. But then I was ignored...as in, no one came back to check if I liked the food or needed more of anything like water while I ate the food presented. And I was at a table in the center of the restaurant. Positive point: my korma and half order of momos cost a grand $22, so great value. I admit the word fusion always scares me. With rare exceptions, it usually is synonymous with unauthentic and confused for me. I finally got over my prejudice and gave Himalayan Fusion a try this weekend, and I was so glad I did! My friends and I were there for dinner on a Saturday night and were seated promptly. The restaurant was spacious, with beautiful decor. The servers were friendly and brought us water and refillable chips promptly. We ordered five entrees to share, and every dish was phenomenal. I particularly enjoyed the Aloo Golbi, the Chicken Korma, and the Chicken Tikka Masala. Every dish was sizzling warm and made with care, with perfectly balanced flavors. One of my friends ordered the leechee drink, which I stole a sip of, and it was perfectly sweet and refreshing. Our server was very pleased we cleaned off all our food. I've been to Himalayan several times in the past, for their restaurant week menu and for their lunch buffets. For restaurant week, I ordered the Vegetable Samosas, Baigun Bharta, and Carrot Pudding. The samosas came with two delicious sauces and the carrot pudding was good, but overly sweet if you finished the whole serving. On a regular day, I would recommend going for their lunch buffet. Because it has a Himalayan/Nepalese flair, it has some great dishes that aren't served in other Indian buffets. The price is also great! In addition, they validate parking so you don't have to struggle to find parking in the Downtown Mall. read more

This place has unreal good Indian food. Everything that was ordered was amazing. The garlic naan was unlike any naan I have had before - you must get it! The main dishes were reasonably priced and served in very cool bowls! They seemed like small portions when they came out but there was actually a lot of meat in the bowls. Although it took some time for the food to come out it was all delicious and a variety of interesting flavors. The place is very trendy inside. There is exposed brick with painted murals on the walls. The atmosphere really added to the experience. The staff were super friendly and helpful. You should probably go here with a group so you can try a variety of dishes and don't miss out on anything. Okay I really wanted to give Himalayan Fusion more stars, but I couldn't go higher than three. I've heard mixed reviews from my friends but I always wanted to try it for myself. After never getting the chance to go during undergrad, I finally stopped by for dinner a few months ago. So let me start with the good which was the food and the ambiance. I ordered the Malai Kebab because I was feeling particularly vanilla that night and you can't go wrong with some good ole chicken. And it was a great dish, good flavor, and a sizable portion in my opinion. I was satisfied with the food. I also loved how you could get a discount on your meal if you did a live performance for the restaurant. They can provide the guitar, you just have to bring your talent lol. One of my friends performed a few times and it was a nice overall vibe. But that leads me to the less enjoy able part of my dining experience was just that everything took way too long. We arrived on time for our reservation but we still had to wait ~10min before being seated. It took even longer for our table to get water and silverware. And then maybe 30 minutes in, we asked if we could have our order taken. Then the fact that my friend had ample opportunity to perform multiple times with sufficient breaks in between performances before getting our food... we were there for nearly two hours and one of my friends had to ask for their food to-go and leave because we really were not expecting to be there for that long. All that being said though, I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt that they might have been understaffed on a busy alumni weekend evening and the stars just did not align for any of us that night. We all enjoyed the food and our servers were being as courteous and apologetic as possible which I really appreciated. I would definitely still go back here, but maybe at a less busy time! read more

Visiting Charlottesville, and stopped in to sample the lunch buffet. It's simple yet tasty. Unfortunately, the tikka masala brought with it a surprise -- a long, sharp metal shaving that I had to pull from my mouth. The server was not concerned when I showed him, and continued bussing tables. So I approached the manager, and he apologized, but that was it. I suggested to both that they pull the dish from the buffet, but I don't believe that happened. This could have been a serious issue. First time back in years. Had been great then, but must be under new ownership bc was a super disappointing meal. Will travel many miles for decent Tibetan momos. These are not momos.They are just dumplings. Meat ones steamed are ok. Not goood. Not avg Chinese restauarant level. But edible. Veg ones steamed - I tasted two, left the rest. "Fried momos" and beef momos basically ended up being dinner, though neither was anything special. All momos served with same thick spicy sauce which overpowers them. Garlic naan...how can you screw up garlic naan? (1) serve cold (2) burn it a little (3) put too little garlic on it to give it any real flavor. One bite. Yecchh. Server "Sorry"...but yep I paid for it bc the servers here bring you water, a qr code and your food and that's it. Order and pay online. Although if you order a tasting sample like I did - which would seem to bring them more money - they will definitely come by every 5 minutes and say "that's a lot of food, are you ok?" without stopping. Beyond potentially aggravating someone I never really did see the goal of them asking that or why they seemed not at all interested in reasons why I was not eating much of the food they brought. Want hot tea? Tough luck bc you found the only Tibetan, Nepalese, Indian restaurant with no tea. Same for chopsticks, The buns taste good but the description leads one to believe there is other food in them or on them. That is not the case. They arrive on top of a thin layer of tasteless onion slaw. One bun for 1-2 people is enough to get the taste but they are by no means amazing enough that you'll have to have more than a few bites and I'm guessing if you ask for butter or dipping sauce, you'll probably get the same thick red spicy saice as with every other dish. Lots of good restaurants on the downtown mall. Skip this one and let it die or turn itself around so we can get some actual momos on the scene. read more

Absolutely delicious food in a great location and setting. ALSO: There was a letter left on all of the tables by one of our servers about how they are trying to build an atmosphere that is better for workers. This means less emphasis on "customer is always right," forced "friendliness" and other ways in which the capitalist economy forces workers to adopt forms of emotional labor that are particularly exploitative of those who are not neurotypical. It's a great initiative that, as a customer, I couldn't support more - solidarity with the person doing it, and good on management for what was called a "neutral to open" attitude toward it. All of the staff members are very friendly and welcoming, which creates a pleasant atmosphere. Last weekend, I had a craving for Indian food. We hadn't tried Himalayan Fusion yet, but it's relatively close to us, and we had a coupon, so we decided to give it a shot on Saturday night. Most restaurants on the weekend are pretty packed, but they had plenty of open tables, which we should have taken as a sign that it would be disappointing. They brought out the traditional papadum and sauces. So far, so good. We started off with the vegetable samosas. This were okay, but they were lacking flavor, and they definitely could have been better. The meal continued to go downhill from there. I ordered the Bhendi masala, which is normally my favorite Indian dish. The okra was overcooked to a very poor consistency, and there were so many green peppers that it completely overwhelmed the flavor of the dish. We also ordered garlic naan on the side. It was so bland and lacked flavor as well. I would not return to Himalayan Fusion. If you want excellent Indian, make the trek up to 29 to Milan. read more

The food was good and the service was good. It appears that things have changed since some of the past reviews. For example, one of the things we ordered was Lamb Vindaloo, which was plenty spicy for me and too spicy for my girlfriend. Definitely only for people who really like spicy food. The naan was good and definitely not like pizza crust. Also, the rice was fine; it was not mushy. My one complaint is the mojito my girlfriend ordered. She said it was not very good and the mint leaves looked awful. The portion sizes are good as long as you order an appetizer. I agree with the other reviews that state the portions are small. However, they are just small in comparison to the giant portions we're used to where you have to take home half your meal because there was too much to finish. We were really full by the end of our meal but we ordered an appetizer and finished off our main courses. My favorite part though was that they have Chimay on tap and serve it in Chimay glasses. This has nothing to do with the rating I gave--because this is an Indian restaurant and I don't care too much about their beer selection--but I thought it was remarkable.
