There was a time before the 99 and the 2000 and as that song was blared throughout the city of New Orleans, I find myself reminiscing, not on That Thang being backed up but on whenever I eat chocolate I'm subconsciously chasing the high this place had given me. We went with them for our wedding cake. Flavors were great and right but the cake wasn't even supposed to be white or heavily iced. It look NOTHING like the photo references discussed or sent. Also, it was an hour late to the venue during which we were unable to contact anyone via email or phone. For the price paid, which was about double from other local bakeries, we expected it to be correct. When reading reviews you should look at the very bottom as well, because somehow all their "bad reviews" are located there and I'm sure mine will be added soon enough. When my fiancé and I came in for our cake tasting appointment it was obvious there was a miscommunication between the employees about who booked our cake tasting, and it was most certainly taken out on us. Which they later apologized for and redeemed themselves. Which I should have known better because that was "red flag number one", but I brushed it aside like we all do. The only reason I gave them "two stars" is because their cakes are delicious, which is very sad because their employees and customer service are unprofessional and rude. When you email the Royal Cakery for any of your cake needs, it sends it to one email, and any employee can reply. Which later creates so much confusion with so many people replying, and a lot of "I don't know who I talked to." Trust me, it's a complete mess. We were going back and forth in pricing and sending pictures like the normal wedding cake process goes, and we were about to send the contract when one morning I get an email (keep in mind this was all in an email). "Another bride came in and booked a huge order on your same date, sorry we won't be able to make your cakes. Best wishes." I kid you not, ALL IN AN EMAIL. Of course I called and they had the nerve to tell me "Mam this is the wedding industry, first come, first served." After I already paid for a cake tasting, which is part of the down payment to secure your date. Please, please do yourself a favor and do not waste your time and money on service like this, especially from "Royal Cakery." This is a beautiful time and you are already spending so much money, spend it on the good ones. Everything was great with them! It was easy to schedule a consultation. You will try a lot of cake during it but it is helpful because they will help you mix & match the things you like. We ended up with a three tier wedding cake with beautiful frosting in our wedding colors. We ended up with more cake than we needed due to no shows but everyone loved the cake! Lots of our guests admitted to having 2-4 slices. It was that good. We can't wait for our anniversary when we get to have our top tier! WORD OF WARNING TO BRIDES LOOKING FOR A CAKE!! If you have more than $1200 to spend on a wedding cake for 250 people, please disregard and drive out to New Orleans East....I'm sure you'll find exactly what you're looking for. Okay..now that the normal brides-to-be on a budget are still with me...do NOT waste your time here. Sure their cakes are beautiful, sure they'll taste alright, but you will leave heartbroken and in tears if you make this your first stop...and your fiance will be pissed that he just drove all the way out there for nothing. So...here's how it goes. "Oh sure honey we can make any cake you want" ...then they bring out slices of cake and glasses of milk. It's good....but I thought that Haydels was way better (and I found out 1/4 of the price). Then they spend an hour designing your cake....then, comes the part when you ask "so...how much is this?" They give you this astronomically huge number (mine was $1200) and you start thinking "Oh my goodness...I'll never be able to afford a cake! Is this how much they all are???" And you start telling them you're on a budget and asking how to cut corners...they pretty much tell you its impossible. Haydel's did a much better job and are accomodating to people of all pocketbook sizes. So if your daddy warbucks isn't footing the bill, and if you're not trying to impress your friends with the place you got your cake from...do not even think about going here. My mother paid $1700 for her wedding cake back in 2013. While the cake was pleasant, not only was the owner's customer service terrible, but the cake had the wrong filling. We did not complain because we were caught up in a hectic wedding week. However, I am finally getting around to writing a review. The owner (if it is the same one from '13) needs a reality check; someone needs to tell her that she is running a supposedly professional business and should act as such. I haven't actually received my cake yet but was referred to Royal Cakery from a friend. So far, I have only had one phone conversation and the rest of the details of our son's Pokemon cake has been discussed via emails over the course of a few days. I have been extremely pleased with the customer service I have received thus far. Shirelle has been quick to respond to all my questions even though our cake isn't one of their big money makers like a wedding cake. I have tasted their white almond cake at a friend's birthday party and knew this was the cakery for our family. Absolute worst customer service I've ever experienced in my entire life. We made an appointment for a cake tasting for our wedding, and when we walked in, the grown woman handling our tasting took one look at me and my fiancé and said have a seat, no greeting or welcome, so I was already on edge by how we were treated. She was very impatient and annoyed while instructing me to fill out the consultation form, even grabbing the pen out of my hand. I was tempted to walk out of the poor excuse of a business at this time, but instead took a couple deep breaths. I am convinced that the person helping us was discriminative based on our age and race, and I will be reporting to the BBB. I begrudgingly even paid the $20 consultation fee (which was probably put in place so they could still make money off the large sum of people who don't use them, due to their lack of customer service.) I emailed the owner my complaint, receiving no response. Therefore, I will continue to tell all the brides I know about my terrible experience. Don't waste your time driving all the way out there. I stand by my first impression that this business is highly unprofessional and has no integrity. Service of that kind would never be tolerated in the public arena. Do not recommend for my worst enemy to have to sit through a consultation and feel oppressed the entire time. 1 star because I am forced. read more

Not only was every cake we tried more delicious than the next, they were more than happy to design a cake no matter what. My wedding cake was beautiful and delicious. For the past three years, I've tried to give them more business but their absolutely HORRIBLE service and record keeping has not made that possible. If my sister didn't check on her ordered a couple weeks before her wedding, she would have had someone else's cake. Easily one of the most unprofessional groups of people I have ever tried to work with. Short story: We gave them a deposit of $500 to do our bride and groom cake. The bride cake was estimated at $1200 and the groom cake was estimated at $300. After a series of unforeseen circumstances we decided to only have our groom cake done by Royal Cakery. I even told them they could keep the remainder of the deposit as a bonus because they complained that they didn't know how to refund us. (not sure why they can't figure that out) Then within just a few weeks of the wedding - she took our contract, scratched out the $300 price and wrote $1100 and sent us the balance. Her only explanation was that she didn't think at first it would be that difficult. We decided to work with someone else and were VERY VERY pleased with their service. Royal Cakery refuses to answer any emails or phone calls on this matter and they even refused to address the Better Business Bureau of Louisiana when I filed a claim demanding our deposit returned. They kept our $500 for doing absolutely nothing but lying to us and giving us the runaround for 6 months. read more

The cakes always taste better than I imagined, and will look above and beyond what my original idea may have been. Royal Cakery is always in high demand and her team works under tremendous pressure. They are busy baking ninjas, so you need to be patient with them while they gin out their creations, your patience will be worth the effort and will be rewarded. My husband and I were married on May 10, 2014 and I would like to start off by saying that this was the BEST cake my family and I have ever had, and previously working in the wedding industry in the New Orleans area, I have tasted a lot of cakes! We had a lot of guests in from out of town and truly wanted to impress everyone and have a little something for each person's taste buds. We went with a White Chocolate cake and Cream Cheese pecan icing and the traditional almond cake with a strawberry filling and butter cream on the outside. I wanted something very different, different colored layers with some very detailed piping and they made it happen! Mrs. Shirelle and her team were absolutely amazing and all of our guests raved about the cake and how delicious and beautiful it was. To a few of the reviews below, I went to our consultation and filled out a form and was told that the deposit was needed to reserve the date, which I believe we sent a few weeks after the consultation, after sending photos of what I wanted and discussing the number and layers in more detail., etc. They take such pride in their work, and they are not a corp. bakery, so what I loved is that she thinks about things and makes sure to follow up and share her thoughts with you, whereas you do not get that type of service with other bakeries in the area. Also her cakes are not frozen and are made FRESH and DELICIOUS! For other tastings at other bakeries we were brought slices of cake that looked like finger sandwiches on paper plates in ziplock bags that you could taste the freezer burn or all the frostings tasted the exact same, etc. Our experience with Royal Cakery was such a breath of fresh air in such a stressful time and we could not have been more thankful and pleased! I don't know how you could not love this place! I have been to a lot of weddings and have had a lot of bad cake. We didn't have a budget to our wedding so it was not like we "settled" for The Royal Cakery. We lived in NOLA and 90% of our guests were from out of town and staying at the hotel. They left with slices of cake and we had people coming back for more after they left the party. For the groom's cake I had something unique in mind and there was nothing like it in their book or on the Internet. It was a vision that they made come true. I explained what I wanted and one of the bakers said it wasn't really "do-able", but we talked and mulled over technical idea and finally came to a place where she said 'we will try and do our best'. I didn't see the final product or a drawing before my wedding day. IT WAS AMAZING and exactly what I pictured in my head (it was a Saints cake-half exposed dome with players on the field and my husband was in the huddle). I submitted it to the Saints and it was featured on one of their social media sites at one point. At the end of the night, they wrapped up the top layer cake and told us how we are supposed to eat it on our first anniversary. Shortly after the wedding we moved. We put our cake in a cooler for a 12 hour drive and put it back in a freezer a day later. So much was going on and we didn't have a chance to cut it until about a year and a half or so after our wedding. IT WAS THE BEST CAKE WE EVER HAD even a year and a half later!!! They aren't open every day and are not as accessible as a regular retail store. It may take some phone tag and leaving messages and that can be frustrating for some people because our culture is used to the 24/7 availability, but don't let that get to you. Trust these wonderful ladies. It is now our first baby's first Birthday and we are making a special trip to NOLA from SC to get our son's 1st Birthday cake. I am just getting round to writing a review myself. I was throwing a party for my mother back in February 2012 and although I was a fool to go through it I did. Only because I my mother is really picky about cake and this particular cake/flavor I'd only experienced at Royal Cakery. So I continued with my service. I first called and stated my purpose which I explained to the lady (who answered the phone as if she didn't care to be bothered..smh) that I was giving a party for about 150 people and asked what do I need to do to book it. She rudely stated, oh we don't do birthday cakes we specialize only in wedding cakes! I said, oh really well that's not what your website states, your website advertises birthday cakes, shower cakes, other special occasion cakes with pictures in your gallery. Her reply was well we only do wedding cakes, and I said well the cake that I want to order isn't any ordinary cake I'm having a big party and I need it to serve at least 150 persons which is the size of a small wedding cake, so now are you still going to refuse my business, and that heffa hung up on me!!! I was hotter than fish grease, I wanted to cut up, drive over there on there next business day and act a fool, but I remained calm. Just when I should have been completely DONE with their unprofessional tails. I called a friend whom I know recently had a wedding with them and got her to call and book the cake and that is how I got my birthday cake book. Although very delish, I will give them the credit for taste and appearance, beautiful work but they alllllllllll need to take some sort of business/how to be professional even when you don't feel like being at work class A.S.A.P. I finally went to sit down with the lady Sherill's sister about the design and let me tell you she had a look on her face like she did not want to see me, I spoke when I walked into the bakery (because I was raised that way) and I had to pray to hold my composure, she was actin like she was doing me a favor. ahem excuse me ma'am I AM PAYING FOR THIS YOU ARE NOT DOING FOR FREE!!!! I had a very hilarious friend with me and she could see that I was about to 9th ward pop off, so she cracked a joke and the heffa laughed, and me too. However, PROFESSIONALISM is definitely something they lack and if Sherill plans on keeping her small bakery business, I suggest that she gets some professional training for her sister and the rest of her family members that work in her bakery, they always said it's bad to do business with family and friends sometimes because they will run you business in the ground!! Well Sherill if you're reading this, just look at it 50% of the reviews are negative, so that should tell you something. It's not that hard to put a smile on your face to greet people and be polite when dealing with them, it's called giving good customer service. Another note: if the only thing you specialize in are wedding cakes, then I suggest you remove the fact that you state on your website that you do them, there is no such thing as we do other cakes during slow season, people get married in every month. You either do it or you don't. but if that's the case you need to specify that exact information on your website before you find yourself in a lawsuit for false advertisement, cell phones do record conversations and as unprofessional as your staff is they will get you all caught up in a nice lawsuit. If you are considering Royal Cakery, stop what you are doing and contact Pure Cake NOW. I did not use Royal Cakery for my wedding cake because they lost my reservation. Several months before my wedding, I went for a consultation and tasting. I assured the owner that I had no other appointments; I wanted to book Royal Cakery for my wedding, and I was willing to sign a contract and pay a deposit if necessary that day. Not necessary, I was told. Contact us a few months before your wedding to finalize your design, she said. All I needed to do was complete a consultation form. As instructed, I contacted the bakery a few months before my date to finalize design and to remind them of the specifics of our meeting--number of guests, flavors, colors, etc. I received an email saying that they were booked for my date. Thank goodness I had NOT paid a deposit--with that type of record keeping, who knows if I'd ever get it back! I didn't have time to spare to argue with them. Fortunately, my planner contacted Pure Cake as soon as I let him know about the cancellation. Pure Cake is far more delicious, and their designers are more creative. Sure, Royal Cakery could probably make anything from Pinterest, but then, that's what you'd have--a cake that looks like everyone else's. read more
