Fresh fried chicken - three thighs - and cold slaw. This order came out cheaper for me than the "three piece dark meat chicken." I didn't do this order, because they ONLY allowed one thigh and two legs. Not used to not being able to make a change like that, but, whatever. The chicken is STILL delicious. Ambiance is the same. I'd still recommen

We fittingly tried Southland on our way back south to NC from VA. Except for the fried chicken, it…read morereally didn't highlight North Carolina's culinary talents very well. I tried the chopped, they called it minced, BBQ. It was very finely chopped, without any texture, and heavily seasoned with a vinegar-based sauce. It was definitely not the best Eastern NC 'Q I've eaten. At least the slaw seemed freshly made. I paid an up charge for sweet potato fries and was rewarded with a heaping helping of undercooked frozen sweet potato fries that were closer to tasteless than tasty. The hush puppies were just balls of bready blandness - yuck. My dining companion tried the fried chicken and pulled pork combo. She thought the fried chicken was good and based on the number of other Customers ordering it, this is Southland's main draw. The pulled pork was stringy strands of pork seasoned like the chopped 'Q; she tried a couple of bites and gave up. Our server was not attentive and seemed like she didn't really care too much. The tasty fried chicken knocked Southland out of the running for a 1-star review, but all-in-all our meal just wasn't very good and really doesn't paint NC BBQ in a positive light.

There is a way better atmosphere in this room than the others. The waitress was great. Very attentive and has good recommendations. We started with the crab dip, which was phenomenal. I got the French quarter chicken and shrimp pasta, and my daughter got something that was a pesto based sauce. I liked my dish, but my daughter truly disliked hers. She barely touched it so we brought it home and my husband ate the rest and he also disliked it.

The bacon wrapped Scallops were perfect as they are wrapped in bacon and deep fired so the bacon is crisp, unlike if you tried to bake it. Overall not bad.

And when I asked for the corn salsa on my bowl the worker corrected me and said "that was guacamole", it was so far from guacamole... it was watery and a yellowish grey color. The food was expensive for sub par food and I was honestly worried I would get sick just from how it looked. The worker also informed me that the bathroom was out of order and had been for some time so had to go to the store down the road. The only reason I gave it 3 stars was for the worker. He was nice and informative on any questions I had. My advice is if you want a burrito or bowl just drive down the road and get chipotle.

We always get the same order, well I do at least because I absolutely love their chicken salad, I always ask for extra. I do love their fries over their sweet potato fries. The tables we were seated at outside were covered with dead gnats, cobwebs and spiders. When asked to clean them the waitstaff said "well its the trees". Mind you this is a tent covered area by the water... it was a huge disappointment as I was really looking forward to eating at a place I have loved & holds so many dear memories. I recommend improving waitstaff and getting a new manager. The manager, guy with the dark long hair is more concerned with socializing at the bar than taking care of his customers.
