Ate there for lunch. Food had been out a long time. Rice was crunchy. I'd pass and head to the pizza place if I were you.

We were doing a hot dog tour down east and Martelle's seemed to be the only option in Hyde County…read more We pulled in and found the parking lot crowded for obvious reasons. It seemed to be the only place around. The less obvious reason was that the food is pretty good. This is a large establishment with a bar and at least one private room that was dark when we arrived. The first two folks we interacted with were under 14 but they pointed us along the way to an open table. For better or worse, it seemed like one woman was taking care of the whole restaurant, which, during our visit was probably 40 people. They offer a large menu as well as a full buffet with salad bar and soup. We were here for hot dogs so we each got a hot dog and a salad (grilled chicken for Mom. fried chicken for me). As we waited for the food to come out there was a lovely semi-organized chaos. As folks saw friends and caught up on life, the server deftly managing conversations and serving drinks and, occasionally a very young person dropping off menus at tables because she insisted on helping. Our food arrived hot and looked great. The hot dogs were made mostly their house way which was standard Carolina dog style plus ketchup. Mom got corn fritters with her which are always good. The salads were hardy and tasted fresh. I jumped up once to get a bit of extra dressing from the salad bar instead of having the server run back to the kitchen. Overall, this was a great stop and I can see why it's popular. I'd love to try the buffet, but not sure when I'll find myself in these parts again.

Great food with friendly and outstanding service. I liked the rustic atmosphere. I would highly…read morerecommend.

I've noticed if they did get a little bit of heat on some social media outlets, but I think people go into their thinking, they should be something that they're not. Rouses is a basic barbecue joint that serves up pretty good barbecue for that region. I always stop there on my way south or north on 95. services not white table and they don't walk around and ties in uniforms. So it's basically you know as I said before a basic barbecue joint.

The fried chicken is almost like a tempura, there is so much batter. The batter had no taste. There were only fried chicken thighs and drum sticks -- no breasts or wings. Every single vegetable was completely overcooked. The buffet was messy and the food was unappealingly presented. The deserts were a travesty -- everything too sweet, too processed, and too artificially flavored. They had a banana pudding -- a Southern staple -- that no one with any pride would ever serve. The chopped pork tasted like vinegar and had no depth. The accompanying cold slaw was sweeter than most desserts.
