Dragon Garden Buffet

This is my wife's favorite place in Washington to eat. And for Chinese buffet, it is pretty good…read more You can order off a menu, but most folks just go for the buffet. After being shown to your seat and your drink order taken, you can begin filling your plate immediately. They have a good selection of chicken from mild to very spicy, and, if you get there after 3:30pm, they have crab legs that are pretty good (this coming from a non-seafood person). They do not have General Tso's chicken, however, and if you order it off their menu, they will serve you the Sesame Chicken on the buffet, General Tso's style (over white rice with steamed broccoli on the side). They also lack other Chinese staples such as egg foo yung and orange/lemon chicken. Their egg rolls are good, and they provide chopsticks upon request. The pricing is very fair, as well. One last point: This little place has over two dozen cameras. It has more cameras per square foot than Walmart, by a wide margin, and that's saying something. I'm not sure why. Don't pocket their egg rolls to take home, I suppose.

If the interior looks…read moregrungy, bordering on dirty, then I question the kitchen, the place we should really be concerned since we don't see behind closed doors. In fact, I held off on using the restroom, because of the condition of the dining room. I was liberal in giving 2 stars (vs 1 star) only because the sushi offered was decent in quantity and quality for a buffet, and extra effort was put into the fried rice with diced veggies and meat; the sushi chef did his job. However, beyond that, we weren't impressed. I tried a bite or two different chicken dishes, General Tso and Sesame Chicken, and some sort of a peppered chicken; they were doughy, heavy laden and soggy, as if they'd been swimming in a broth the entire day, and I couldn't honestly identify the meat. The offerings on the buffet were typical but quality fell short. I'm hopeful management will make the effort to clean up its act and offer a cleaner way to enjoy a meal out with a decent variety of options. Ok enough beating up this establishment; the plus side is it's an inexpensive choice for families in an AYCE environment. Decide for yourself, but I'd suggest choosing the hibachi grill where you choose (and see) your ingredients and watch it being cooked fresh. Otherwise, maybe avoid this place altogether... There has to be better choices in the area, or God save us all.

We went there on St. Patrick's Day and had one of the best Reubens ever, along with absolutely the best fries ever. It is such a pretty restaurant and when you walk in and see the water and the boats you totally relax. It's like you're on vacation. Our server Christie, was so, so nice, and didn't blink an eye when I changed my drink. We are looking forward to going back there for dinner. The people at the bar were raving about the shrimp. We gotta try that next time.

***This is a review for Saltwater's seasonal Thanksgiving buffet, open to reservations only***…read more Oh, Saltwater Grill... where do I begin? Let's begin with the gravy, or lack there of. It's Thanksgiving. Unless the chef has UNWAVERING, super-heroic confidence the turkey is going to be ultra-moist, gravy needs to be on standby. Even IF the turkey is perfect, what about the mashed potatoes? The dressing? Gravy is the cohesiveness that brings it all together, the savior lifeblood of the holiday dinner plate. (FYI, the turkey needed said gravy.) Let's check in with the alternate entree offerings: chicken & dumplings or shrimp & grits. They're lucrative ideas for options other than turkey & ham. But... the execution was lacking. The chicken & dumplings had a cloying, sweetish flavor. I couldn't put my finger on it; maybe I was getting undertones of nutmeg & allspice in my bites. It was, um, unique (to be polite). The shrimp & grits. Bless it, I just don't know what to say. The grits be gritting, not creamy & smooth like they should be for this dish. The shrimp swimming in the sauce in the adjacent pan struck me as the tiny salad shrimp most of us have seen before. Speaking of the 'sauce': This wasn't a thoughtful carrier vehicle for ANY type of shrimp, great or small. It seemed to be a thinned out mornay with no thought or attempt at flavor. Ah, wait. There is always dessert batting last to save the day! It's the last thing that touches your palate, erasing all vestiges of earlier misgivings. Except... NO pumpkin pie or variation thereof. NO pecan pie or attempted version. There was red velvet cake, flourless chocolate torte & a snickerdoodle'ish crumb cake available. The crumb cake would have to be my go to to close out this meal. For reserved, timed seatings of patrons the dining area was never overwhelmingly crowded. With that said, overall service was subpar. We never received beverage refills (everyone drinking water or tea, no difficult orders) & plates were cleared slowly. Well, that's that. We know to make better choices next year. However, you don't know what you don't know until you know. Now we know. p.s. - It's a good thing I have pumpkin pie stashed at home.

It seemed to be the only place around. The less obvious reason was that the food is pretty good. This is a large establishment with a bar and at least one private room that was dark when we arrived. The first two folks we interacted with were under 14 but they pointed us along the way to an open table. For better or worse, it seemed like one woman was taking care of the whole restaurant, which, during our visit was probably 40 people. They offer a large menu as well as a full buffet with salad bar and soup. We were here for hot dogs so we each got a hot dog and a salad (grilled chicken for Mom. fried chicken for me). As we waited for the food to come out there was a lovely semi-organized chaos. As folks saw friends and caught up on life, the server deftly managing conversations and serving drinks and, occasionally a very young person dropping off menus at tables because she insisted on helping. Our food arrived hot and looked great. The hot dogs were made mostly their house way which was standard Carolina dog style plus ketchup. Mom got corn fritters with her which are always good. The salads were hardy and tasted fresh. I jumped up once to get a bit of extra dressing from the salad bar instead of having the server run back to the kitchen. Overall, this was a great stop and I can see why it's popular. I'd love to try the buffet, but not sure when I'll find myself in these parts again.

Taco pizza? Hawaiian pizza with SPAM?? Hamburger pizza? Honestly speaking, I am wondering what kind of restaurant I am at, a pizza parlor or something that comes out of a late night fridge experiment. Well, I wouldn't be surprised if the place offered to make a turd pizza with them. Talking about food, it seems that the pizza spent around thirty seconds in an oven when it was sent to me. Undercooked, struggling, it was so raw that one might say it is still bread dough. Seriously, even frozen pizzas cooked in microwave are better off. Speaking about salad, the lettuce looked like it was taken straight from a subway kitchen. Just some depressing shredded strips. Unfortunately, the atmosphere of the place was also discouraging. I sat there, looking at my plate and wondering whether it was my wrong meal choice or wrong path in life in general. I took three bites, THREE.. and my stomach immediately started protesting like it was a blue haired crybaby. At that point, I decided my health (and sanity) were more important than finishing whatever that was. Overall, if you're looking for pizza that tastes like it was cooked by a flashlight and seasoned with disappointment, this is your spot. Otherwise, you might want to go up the street to wendys.

When you arrive get your name on the list at the counter and stand around with the other folks waiting for a table and stare at the case of cakes that look so very good. I was there during the prime rib special that is two days a week and seems to be a popular choice from what I could hear. The other patrons were friendly while we waited. I'm not sure how long it took to be seated but when my name was called I was put into a booth. At the other tables and booths I noticed the waitstaff knowing the names of the other patrons so that is always a good sign. My waitress was friendly and gave some recommendations. I ordered a piece of cake to go first thing as I wanted to be sure I got a slice of the pig pickin' with the pineapple and mandarin oranges. Bread and hush puppies were brought out with my beverage. I was even offered more if I chose. I went with the filet mignon and shrimp as I couldn't decide between the two so went with an option on the menu to get both. I also got a baked potato and mac n cheese. The potato was huge. Both the filet and the shrimp were great as was the baked potato. I wasn't a fan of the mac n cheese as much so when I got full I was ok not finishing or taking that with me. I will be back the next time I am in Greenville, NC.
