We were in town wondering where to eat so of course I hopped on yelp and found this gem. We made a reservation which seems to be a great idea as the place seems busy. The restaurant is so comfortable and the staff are very friendly and welcoming. i started off with a glass of pinot and we ordered the vegetable lumpia for an appetizer. It was very delicious. My entree was the linguini and chicken alfredo. I am still raving about it. The portion size was large so i took some home. Now here is the thing you must not miss---the triple chocolate cheesecake!!! My mouth is watering. If I lived in town I think I would go broke because I would be eating here so much. I've been to Montero's a couple times now and each time was solid. Great wait staff and hosts, clean well lit dining areas, and delicious food options. This visit I got the French Quarter and my son got the El Hefe burger. He asked for medium to medium well and it was a little over cooked but he said it was still great. We happened to come here on Valentine's Day without thinking and for their special menu they had house made donuts that tasted like churros and beignets. I grew up very near Louisiana and while I would say their other dishes that are Louisiana inspired taste NOTHING like anything from Louisiana, I would say their donuts NAIL the beignets flavor and texture. Atmosphere: This is a more upscale classy restaurant for the local area. You can come in dressed in jeans and a graphic tee or you can show up in a suit. The dining area is clean and comfortable. We had to push the booth seats a little closer because we were both too far from the table. Food: They have a variety of options however, they seem to have more sea food choices than others. I got the prime rib which was meh...They cooked it right but it was not as tender as I would have liked. Service: Excellent, the staff is diverse and friendly. Highlight of this establishment. We are visiting from out of town and were super excited to find this lovely restaurant with an extensive vegan menu. The ambience is nice, and the staff were friendly and helpful. Once we ordered our two vegan meals, a basket of various breads and butter was brought to the table. When I finally reconnected with the waitress to ask her if any of this was vegan friendly, I was told that it wasn't and that she would bring some that was. She returned to the table to inform me that they no longer had vegan bread or butter. The menu explained that all meals except pasta dishes came with two sides but when I attempted to order two sides I was told that the vegan meals only come with one side. I ordered the vegan Caesar salad which also had a $2.50 up charge and was quite tiny for the additional price. All of the meals, not just the vegan dishes, were close to $20, so between that and the up charge, I was disappointed at all of the serving sizes. That being said, all of the food was fantastic! The manager also checked in with us a couple of times which was appreciated. I'm still giving four stars because ultimately, given the selection of vegan options and the quality of the food, we would definitely go back. read more

We used to love Montero's it was our special occasion go to . Granted it has been about 6 months since we have been because like the rest of the world money is tight and we have been cutting back on going out. But tonight we decided to treat ourselves. And we were so disappointed Our experience was truly disheartening. The menu had changed our favorite item the scallops was removed which I understand happens but the rest of the menu was surprisingly limited and uninspired, offering few appealing options When the meals that we did decide on arrived, they were cold, stale, and lacked any freshness or flavor We politely brought our concerns to the manager, hoping for a simple acknowledgment or solution. Instead, we were brushed off with indifference and no effort to make things right. Instead he said " Well hopefully you at least enjoyed each other's company" I enjoy my husband's company sitting on my couch for free!! That lack of accountability was the final straw. Dining out should feel welcoming and satisfying. Unfortunately, this visit left us disappointed, unheard, and still hungry. We won't be returning. read more

Cute restaurant in Elizabeth City! I definitely would've drove by without realizing it was a restaurant! I ordered the Montero's Prime Rib which was rubbed with rosemary and garlic, slow roasted and served with au jus. Greek Tofu Bites: Crispy on the outside and creamy on the inside, these tofu bites are perfectly deep fried, tossed in our lemon-herb seasoning and served with both marinara and roasted red pepper aioli. Bangin' cauliflower; Lightly breaded and deep fried, tossed with our plant-based bangin' sauce and served over shaved cabbage. This restaurant had ALOT of vegan/vegetarian options! And they were all so flavorful! Ahah clearly I balanced my prime rib with vegan options too! They have areas for a private dinning area for a slightly larger party. Plenty of room for large parties. My boyfriend and I dinned in last night and they were able to seat us quickly even though there were a lot of reservations for big parties. We ordered the chicken poblano soup and calamari to start. From what I've heard this is one of the best restaurants in Elizabeth city and I had to come and try it myself. This restaurant is in fact very different from the others around you can come dressed nicely and enjoy really good food. There is a total of 5 different rooms which I thought was so unique each room has a different color theme. We made a reservation arrived in time and barely had to wait 5 minutes upon arrival. Now quick reminder I am originally from New York so the building is unique to me it is not the restaurant front that I am accustom to we really drove right past it and didn't know it was a restaurant but the inside is beautiful! My mother and daughter accompanied me on this night and the following was our dining experience. For appetizer we got the Bangin' Shrimp and it was fried to perfection, the shrimp is on top of a bed of slaw and it had very good flavor and the right amount of spice the sauce was so good. For entrees my mother got the Brown sugar encrusted pork chops which was topped with sautéed onions and paired with corn and cheddar mashed potatoes. She said she enjoyed it, it had good flavor. My daughter got the kids pizza with tater tots I mean it might just be pizza but she enjoyed it (kids lol) and I got the Maple Glazed Salmon which was paired with spinach and red onion and mashed potato. They do offer 1/2 or full potion plates and I got the full now I didn't expect 2 pieces of salmon at all however let me tell you this everything on my plate was cooked well I asked for my salmon medium and it was cooked right, it was not heavy I literally ate it all and still had room for dessert!!!!! For dessert I ordered the warm chocolate brownie which comes with vanilla ice cream, chocolate and caramel drizzle we all ate it and it was nice and warm delicious! [Coronavirus review] I came in search of vegetarian food in an area that I wasn't optimistic about. They were doing dine-in at 50% capacity when I dropped in - no one really knows what the future holds as of this date, but reduced capacity may be the standard for a while. They had hand sanitizer at the door and insisted that people wear masks when they weren't at their socially distant tables. The inside was a fascinating old house, but my room smelled a bit dank for some reason. I found no shortage of clearly labeled plant-based options on the menu; some are fried in the same fryer with other non-plant ingredients and are even noted as such on the menu, giving you an abundance of control over what you're eating. I went Southern, sampling a gumbo with fried okra that was quite satisfying. Honestly, I had trouble finding vegetarian gumbo and/or okra at restaurants in New Orleans, so I was happy enough to find it here. The tempeh tacos I added were a bit of a strange build-your-own affair. The tempeh was ground and in a lot of liquid, which was very messy and overwhelmed the tortillas. Tastewise it was solid, and a good way to get some protein in. It's really good for plant-based cuisine, you won't have any trouble finding something interesting that suits your needs. I wasn't enthused with their non-alcoholic beverage selection. I will say that they are taking reservations - online, by email, or by phone - and given the limited hours and capacity and the fact that they are putting out a quality menu, I would suggest making a reservation. read more

We moved to the area a few years ago and have visited Montero's about 10 times. Only one time was a seasonal special disappointing. And they made it right with us when we had to send it back. ALL other items we've ordered with parties both large and small have been simply delicious. Must try the toasted ravioli and any risotto dish! Very diverse menu with something for everyone...even vegans ;-) And they will customize anything to your liking. Attire is anything from black tie to t-shirts; I've seen everything in between, and all are welcome. ** Pro tip: Hours are somewhat limited, so make sure to verify before you plan to stop in. Closed Sundays and Mondays. ** CATERING - Gets its own 5stars! We've used Montero's a couple times for pick up catering for large parties at our home in Currituck near the McShell, and it is the ONLY place we will call and recommend! We heard about this place from some YouTube vlogs when planning our Elizabeth City/Outer Banks trip and decided to give it a try. We made a reservation on open table but people were still able to walk up and be seated within 15-30 minutes. The restaurant is set in a nice house with many rooms, including a banquet room. The menu is very extensive and includes a lot of options, including for those that are vegetarian/vegan (which is why we selected this). Our server Dawn really cared about us and made our experience fun. I ordered the summer seafood pasta and thought it was good - they had a half and full options and I selected the half as I was not super hungry. The seafood pasta had a couple pieces of shrimp, crab, and shallots with linguini pasta. It was light (and not heavy or creamy) so I enjoyed it. It also came with a side and I selected a side salad The menu has a ton of meat options as well. They're known for their prime rib but I wasn't super hungry to try it. Overall if you're passing through Elizabeth City and you're wanting a nice sit down place for lunch or dinner, add this to your list! Just note the days of the week they are closed! read more

My fiancé took me to Montero's for our anniversary last night. Neither of us had been before but he knew it was a good special occasion spot. They did not disappoint! First, I love that you can get a smaller portion if you like. We ordered the small crab dip appetizer, the steak special, the shrimp and grits, side salads and a bottle of white wine. The service was great, can't remember the server's name- maybe Madison (long dark hair), she was very personable and answered all questions we had. The owner was on site and checking on everyone, which I love. We took our leftovers but the shrimp and grits were so amazing I couldn't go to bed without eating the rest. Oh wow! Montero's is phenomenal! Best place in Elizabeth City. I had the special for this Friday night which was sesame crusted Tuna, which I got medium, on a bed of lo mein noodles with squash, zucchini, broccoli, carrots, onions and ponzu sauce! It was amazing! Cooked to perfection and the baked sweet potato on the side was exceptional. The bread and muffins they give out before your meal will definitely fill you up because you can't stop eating them. The hush puppies were also amazing and I wanted to eat them forever.... the overall experience and environment of this restaurant was one to be reckoned with. Our hotel front desk representative suggested this place. Visiting from NYC, I appreciate the greenery outside the restaurant and the environment, overall. Now let's get to the menu.. Montero's offers a variety of dishes and a good amount of vegan (No one in my party is vegan) and gluten conscious options. The owner walked around the dining area connecting with his guests and making sure everything was going well. Nice personal touch. Something we are not used to in NYC. I ordered half portion (1 piece of salmon instead of 2 pieces, had I ordered a full portion) of the blackened salmon with cheesy mashed potato and asparagus. My son had a full portion of the summer seafood pasta dish with a side of fries. Nice sized portion and very tasty and filling. I'd love to have one open up in NYC but truth is, the homeliness will not be preserved. Will have to visit again the next time we come back. Montero's is a true hidden gem. read more
