When I say I miss country cooking oh my. This place hit the spot. Our family is in town for a wedding and we were hungry. Stopped at this place one block from our Airbnb. Delicious!! They were understaffed but the southern hospitality overcame all of the waiting we had to do. Shout out to everyone who showed up to work today!! You all deserve a raise!! Thanks for the good memories. read more

Colonial Cafe - The Country Link Breakfast w/eggs & cheese, a biscuit and grits. And of course my favorite country link. - American Near Me - Elizabeth City, North Carolina

The food was very good and the service excellent. Cali (I think was her name) was holding down the fort all on her own. She made sure we had refills and everything we needed. Although she was very busy, she greeted us from a distance the moment we walked through the door. True customer service. read more

This is not a gourmet establishment. It is down home at its best. It is my favorite breakfast spot. Large servings at a reasonable price. The service is quick and friendly. read more

My family and I ventured out for breakfast one morning during our brief stay in Elizabeth City. There aren't many options in the small town, but we did eventually find Colonial Cafe, a very traditional breakfast and lunch cafe. The breakfast menu is full of omelets, biscuit sandwiches, pancakes, and plenty of bigger platters. I settled on the fried chicken biscuit, cajun style ($6.99). Their biscuits are really good alone, but adding some spice from the chicken was an excellent choice. I really enjoyed this sandwich. I also had some of my daughter's biscuits & gravy ($8.99 with a choice of home fries, grits, or baked apples). I would have ordered this had she not done so. But I knew there would be plenty leftover. This was a good serving of biscuits & gravy, again their biscuits are fresh baked and good on their own, but when topped with homemade sausage gravy you can't go wrong! read more

Had breakfast today and I think they can read your mind because it came fast! Faster then fast food! Eggs were perfect and coffee was dark like I like it. Prices are reasonable in today's world. Just go check it out. read more

Opens early so an excellent spot to carbo load before a race. Nice diner breakfast joint. No oil smells. Clean. Eggs , bacon, waffles, pancakes and more. Friendly and prompt service. Ate breakfast twice. Highly recommend for good food and friendly service. read more

Came for Saturday morning breakfast thinking it's gonna be fast and cheap. I picked the wrong day. We are told early on that 3 servers called out so it's gonna be a long wait w only one waitress. Not being a hurry I sit down anyway w two kids who aren't the best waiters (bc they're kids.). The people just in front of us right away and their food comes before our order is even taken. We wait over 40 minutes before the cook comes out himself to take the order bc the waitress is choosing to take bar orders and not sure what else before taking anyone else's order despite saying I'll be right back to take that order. Food is really good diner fare, biscuits are awesome and pancakes fluffy. The kitchen staff are nice trying to make up for things but the sole waitress clearly is unable to accommodate a crazy situation even w kitchen staff are ringing people out and delivering food. The diner is an old classic diner and looks as you'd expect. I know the staffing was a fluke but I probably won't return bc it was really mishandled. read more

Pleasant breakfast shop . Often busy as locals eat here often. Wife had biscuits and gravy while I had omelet. Biscuits seemed fresh not frozen and grill reheated. Will return. read more

Food is adequate only. Ambiance is old but interesting. Service used to very good before so many of the great service people quit. Our last weekly visit 5 of us the service was extremly poor. That will be our last of Colonial Cafe for us. read more

Have been there for breakfast and lunch a half dozen times, usually with several kids. Everyone has been happy with the food and service every time we've been. If you like a classic diner feel with home cooked style food, you'll like this place. read more

Very nice people. Hubn and I loved breakfast. Happy place easy yes for breakfast on a Friday morning

I thought this would be just another little basic breakfast spot. And it is. But they kill it when it comes to nreakfast. I've only been about 3 times, yes for nreakfast, but I never leave disappointed. All the morning time meats are cooked to a beautiful caramelized doneness. The eggs are always light and fluffy, which is always good. You need to try their biscuits and gravy, fluffy biscuits with THICK gravy, yum!! Home fries are good too. I got a side of sliced tomatoes with all my meals so far. I would recommend you try this place out. I will be back for breakfast most likely, maybe even to try the lunch menu. read more

Our favorite place to come to in town. We have been here for a few years now. Between the whole food industry going down and customer service being non existent almost everywhere nowadays , Colonial Cafe never fails. They feel like home and make you feel like family. Everyone here is so hard working, they go above and beyond. Everything we have had on the menu from breakfast to lunches, pancakes to burgers, we are always beyond satisfied. Never a let down here and worth the money and time to be dining in this establishment. We would come here over any other place in the area because we know we will not be disappointed. read more

Breakfast menu. Ate at this local restaurant this morning. Arrived and was greeted with energetic happy staff that welcomed my wife and I. I already felt like part of their family. Ordered classic breakfast with pancake eggs bacon and grits. My wife had cheese biscuit pancake and bacon. Everything came out with 10 minutes and was hot. Bacon was cooked to order and perfect. Pancakes were soft and fluffy and moist. Staff was very attentive and stopped over often. Prices are great which leaves more money for tipping. Thank you Colonial Cafe. read more

An old school Cafe. A place that's been around maybe since Moses was a lad. It shows it's age a bit but so do I... It's not a fancy bistro, I don't think I saw a hipster anywhere but the coffee was fresh and hot and the breakfast menu was solid. Its my understanding it is breakfast only these days I had the $8 breakfast. EGGS over medium cooked perfectly (not every place gets it right , sausage, toast and home fries. No frills bells or whistles just a solid breakfast with good service for a reasonable price. A reasonable price for the 2023/2024 economy. Happy New Years everybody. read more

This place has really gone downhill. It's sad. We ride down from Virginia Beach periodically for breakfast or lunch because of our previous experience. Today they couldn't even make a BLT, because they didn't have any lettuce or sliced tomatoes and they aren't serving lunch. They don't have the wonderful homemade potatoes, only shredded hash browns. Very disappointing. Even the bacon and eggs today were below average. So we got bacon, eggs, toast and and egg sandwich. read more

Best place in town (e-city) for sushi but prices are so high! Didn't pay this much for sushi in Alaska and cost of living is way way higher there. read more

Stopped off here for a quick lunch while in Elizabeth City and I thought the food was decent but not amazing. The staff was friendly and welcoming, though! I had a chicken philly sub, which was okay but a little small. The fries were very good, which bumped this up to a fourth star. Based on the menu and atmosphere, I feel like this is probably better as a brunch stop. read more

The dirty bird is one of the best breakfasts I have EVER had! I ordered it with an extra piece of chicken and cleaned my plate. Could not stop eating it. And the potatos are amazing! Everything freshly made. Can't wait to go back! read more

This is a no frills and thrills kind of place. The best part were the pancakes, eggs and juice. We ordered the dirty birdie and hungry Henry. The home fries were a small side of fried potato's seasoned good but could've used more on the plate. This was just an ok for me and I probably wouldn't be back. The service was good and the food did come out hot. read more

We love Colonial Cafe. Good breakfast, friendly service. We usually get omelets, pancakes, or, if feeling cheeky, The Dirty Bird. Server Beth is a gem. Their home fried breakfast potatoes are among the best....there's a whole lengthy, multi-step process they use to get the potatoes crispy. read more

Open early in the morning but great portions and prices. It is a more home cooked food that's good for you.

Pleasantly surprised. Ended up here on a whim and really satisfied with the amazing service, food, and quick delivery of hot food. Order the Cajun fried chicken sandwich and it was to die for. Will most definitely be back here to try breakfast soon read more

Loved it. The wife made me go there because she heard it was good. We went on a Saturday and it was great! We were seated quickly and Beth was a fantastic waitress. The food was delicious, hot, and there was plenty of it. The pancakes were the highlight of the meal. The place looked like it had plenty of regular customers but we were treated like we were a regular too. Very friendly staff and excellent food. read more

I travel a lot with my husband on business and we are always looking for a good breakfast to start our day and we found a gem. It's at the one of the Furthers spots of the state of NC. First time visiting Elizabeth city and I was not disappointing. In these times of social distancing I felt safe but well served. The staff was Super friendly and really glad to see us, at least that is how they made us feel. We had a great special order and the coffee and unsweetened tea were both very good. They offer specialty creamers with the coffee. I hope to be back soon. read more

We sampled a couple of NC favorites for comparison to TX. Shrimp and grits were seasoned differently: bacon, green bell pepper, black pepper, sage (maybe - tasted a bit like poultry seasonings), and other seasoning I'm sure (a wee bit salty for my taste, but not excessive). It was tasty. Also tried the biscuits and gravy. Good flavor in the sausage gravy. Interestingly the biscuits were less "fluffy" than what I typically get in TX. All in all, a good breakfast that'll stick with us all day. We left nothing on our plates! We'll probably not ever be back this way, but if we were, we'd stop again. read more

Long awaited opening did not disappoint! We had the classic breakfast with homemade raisin bread toast fried eggs, bacon and phenomenal hash browns. The service was amazing and the food was superb. We come here at least once a week, and today I was completely flabbergasted by the service. They were short handed in the kitchen, got it no big deal. Our waitress told us she was unable to take our order because the cook was trying to get caught up. Mean while, other people were placing orders that came in after us. Really disappointed. We will be back because the food is so good, and probably update the review depending on service. read more
