This is a hidden gem!!! Wish we had stopped in years ago. The customer service is about the best I have seen for the area and the food was good. Personally I wish the burger patties had more flavor to them but some salt and pepper makes them ok. Great lil spot in rural Illinois. Stopped in here for breakfast before my first client meeting today. This place is SUPER clean! You actually order at the counter like a fast food place and they bring your food to you! I ordered the country fried steak, eggs, hash browns, toast and coffee. Everything was great and cooked just right. Very inexpensive dining for a great quality meal. I may stop in here for lunch on my way back to St Louis. read more

Brand new restaurant. This is a Fast Food/Sit down restaurant. You order at the counter, and go sit down, and they bring it to you freshly made (Similar to Dorreens, if you been there) I actually liked the Route 4 diner. Lauren probably had a simple child's burger, yes those can be paper thin. But order the 'Route 4 Burger' it is a lot better, They have a nice sauce to it, similar to CA burger chains. Fries are average. The Fish is very good, and on the first visit, I had fried chicken. The Chicken wings were also good. It has nice open space, and has a very clean environment. 2nd time ate here. We remember it from last year and stopped. All we could remember from last year's visit was seems so very clean. Still very clean looking. An employee is always wiping tables. I would say leaning towards expensive. They are fast food. You order and sit down. I had a beef gyro. Same price for 1 as Arby's 2 gyro and it's smaller. Just small and simple. Wife got Chicken and dumplings. HORRIBLE. Nothing but a thick bowl of white Elmer's Glue. Absolutely zero taste. Yuk, yuk, yuk. Just a big thick like oatmeal bowl of wet flour. I can't say enough. Someone had no idea how to cook this. The lady cleaned off the table while we there and never asked how we liked the food or what was wrong. Yet, she took an entire, full bowl of Chicken and dumplings away. I believe it was never cooked long enough to get rid of the flour taste. Ordered the Bluegill Dinner with Potato Salad and Baked Beans on the side. I have seen elsewhere that they say the food is similar to Doreen's, not far from wrong, except more selection at Doreen's. What can I say, Well, the Potato Salad left much to want, as it almost seemed to be on the way to runny, possibly getting Old. The Baked Beans, well, they had the consistency of Pork and Beans except no Pork, I have tasted Far better from a can of Busch's Baked. Fact is, I would suggest they use them, instead. I would also look at running over to WalMart and getting their Amish Potato Salad, that would be an improvement. The fish?? I know it says Bluegill, but my taste buds tells me that it was NOT. Went here because it looked brand new, very clean and sooo promising. The first sign of problems (which we ignored) was that there was only 1 car in the entire parking lot. We figured since it was 8 o'clock in the evening, we simply missed the dinner rush. Anyhow, the menu was pretty extensive. In fact, a bit overwhelming to be honest (problem no. 2). After reading the entire selection of food, we finally placed our order about 5-10 mins later. We got our food pretty quickly, which we appreciated since we were already starving. However, they forgot two drinks (problem no. 3). Seven of the nine of us were very disappointed. The other two felt the food was pretty good. Personally, I ate 3 Soft Taco Supremes for $3.55. Their food had no taste (problem no. 4)!!! I am a HUGE fan of sour cream and I couldn't even tell they put some in it (though you can clearly see it). I would have rather gone to Taco Bell (which can be seen down the street as you stand at their front door). Finally, my son got the chicken strip basket meal. Nearly halfway through, he found pieces of hair in his fries (problem no. 5). At 12 yrs old, he often doesn't get phased by gross things but this caused him to push his food away. He didn't even want McDonalds (which can be seen down the street as you stand at their front door) after that...he had lost his appetite. The staff had been so warm and welcoming when we came in, we just didn't want to complain. I would love to give them a compliment about their food but I honestly don't feel it is deserved. My one recommendation is to limit their selection of food and concentrate on making those items excellent. So, if you want a good meal, stay safe and go to McDs, Taco Bell, Pizza Hut or Subway. I went through the drive thru today and got burgers and fries for my husband, daughter and myself. There was a cat begging at my car door in the drive thru while I ordered. I now know why the cat was there. The burgers were the quality of cat food. They were really not good. I would rather go to McDonald's and eat the burgers there. Maybe something else on the menu is better and I ordered the wrong thing. It looks like a nice place and I was excited to try something new but we are very disappointed. Also I saw the have a nacho cheese dispenser which to me does not belong in a restaurant. They are for concession stands. If you are going to eat here I really recommend avoiding the burgers. We come to Sparta for the SCTP Nationals and last year discovered Route Four. This year we discovered the survived their first year in business and the food and service was just as wonderful. The restaurant is very clean and so are the bathrooms. I would recommend this place. read more
