When you are in Jackson Heights, it's kinda hard to find a "bad" or "not so good" Bangladeshi/Indian/Pakistani restaurant. I mean they are all good, someway or other. Yet, there are places that you go over and over again. Roti Boti is one of them. I never leave Jackson Heights area without going to the Roti Boti at least once. I also get very confused about which dish to order. They are all (and equally) delicious. So much to choose from but only so little time to spend (or only so little space in my stomach... hehhee). Lunch counter, done Pakistani style. I didn't realize that everything would be so spicy and now I'm sitting here, writing a review, sweating my face off. I have to say, it's quite expensive for what it is. I got Chicken curry and Goat curry over rice and a (large) piece of nan - it came to $12! The goat was good, but oily. The chicken was moist, but also oily. There are plenty of ethnic lunch counter places in Astoria that do the same meats, and similar sauces for literally HALF the price. Pretty funky little place: lots of loud Bollywood movies and/or Pakistani news, a high potential for chaos at the counter, and lots of crusty stuff on the plates. Minus one star for sanitation. Stay out of the bathroom if you can. The food was spectacular, though. I don't care if I have to wipe the crusties off the plate, as long as I can pile some great stuff on the plate once I wipe the crusties off. The chicken in spinach was off the hook, the lamb was brilliant, the okra was pretty solid (if a bit oily for my taste), and the naan was pulled straight from the oven. We ate like truck drivers for a grand total of $14 for two people. Awesome. Sure this place looks a bit dingy inside, and they started off with a "B" rating that has now become an "A" but I can't help but come here when i'm drunk or simply craving some boneless chicken and naan!! It taste mighty good and its very cheap! Throw in a Mango Lassi for a sweet yogurt-like drink. I've never had anything beyond the boneless chicken, rice and naan because I'm a bit iffy about branching out because I really don't know how good this place actually is!! I've lived around the corner from this place for two years and finally went. FINALLY! Great for late night or really any time of day. Yes, the food runs a little heavy, but when you need some goat or lamb knuckle curry this is the best place to find it. Their tikka masala is also stellar, with just a hint of heat. Also, their naan is amazing and their rice tender. And their lassis are delicious. and everyone is very nice. We like this place, can you tell? It's great for when that curry craving hits you. We came here for a late night dinner with our friends. The food was okay but it was really disorganized. They keep messing up our orders. They keep bringing dishes that we didn't order out and not bring the dishes that we did order. At the end they charged us way too much. Our friends had the same thing and it was half of what we paid. Roti Boti Fresh N' Froti ...man, this place is good. Like way too good for scuzzy 21st street good. Walking through this area you're basically presented with "meh" cheap take out combination restaurants (anyone else have a serious issue with Mexican and Chinese food in the same place? Nobody wins!) and a few diamonds in the rough. Roti Boti is a bright shining star, though it doesn't look the part. Passing by you'll notice a large space devoid of any real personalization and a number of old school dudes chilling, talking about soccer ...or something... but trust me, enter! We decided to give it a go for some random take out (they don't deliver, wtf) and left with full tummies and lusting for more. Order 2 Chicken Kababs, 1 plate of Chicken Tiki Massala w/ Rice and an order of Naan. All of this food was enough to feed 2 VERY hungry people for...drumroll please...14 bucks. 14 dollars? Seriously? They gave us so much food I would have been totally fine expecting to pay double, but nope 14 bucks gets you some of the best chicken tiki massala I've ever had and a tremendous helping of it. The kebabs were perfectly spiced and oh so tasty to eat on the walk home nice and warm. The chicken tiki massala with rice and naan basically sent us into a dreamstate of uber foodie godliness. All that with some leftovers for the next day too. 5 Stars to the masters that are Roti Boti. read more

Roti Boti is an unassuming, workingman's Pakistani roti joint. Notice the taxicabs outside. Yes, that means the food here is good. Ignore that the cash register is sitting over some sort of microwave. Chicken tikka masala (a.k.a. non-Pakistani, pale face Westerner-type food) here is very good, super flavorful, and we order over rice. The rice is that multicolored goodness that rice should be. The naan is (almost) made before your eyes ... just stand on your tippy toes and peek in the window in the wall, and you can see it being made. Chicken tikka masala is what we eat here, with gulab jamun, lassis and other accoutrements. There are other options, certainly, but what we've tried, we were not accustomed to, and the options were rather oily, so we stick to CTM. Raita is always included. Note: while there are vegetarian options, this is not what I would call a vegetarian's restaurant. The prices are good, the takeout portions over rice are enough for two people. Roti Boti was the first local food I ate when I moved to Astoria 8 months ago, and I"m still thankful to my roommate for introducing me. From the outside, I probably never would have walked in. Decor is nothing and you can easily miss the restaurant if you aren't looking for it. But never walk by it if you're in the mood for Indian food. The daily menu seems to be pretty much whatever they felt like cooking that day,so it's definitely a place to get take-out from, not delivery. I'm completely comfortable ordering anything they've got available (although I haven't worked up the guts to try the goat yet). It's not the best place to sit and eat, but that could be changing soon. It seems like they recently purchased the space next door and will be expanding the restaurant and adding tables. When they do that, I'd probably be willing to sit down, but it's not there yet. Make sure you get the fresh Naan with your order. It only costs $1 and it makes the meal. This place has been around for a long time. They cater to late night taxi-cab drivers and single bachelors. I'm neither. This place is around the corner from my buddy's house and we eat here when his mom/grandma doesn't cook. It's not the best food you can get but it is Pakistani/Indian food. It has your standard choices. I usually get the chicken tikka masala with rice. Comes with a side of salad (cucumber and lettuce) w/ Yogurt Sauce. They charge a bit too much I think. $11 for a meal. Not very cool. The chicken tikka (butter chicken) is very delicious because it doesn't set my mouth on fire. Being brown you would think I would handle hot food easily right?- Nope. It's sweet and I like that. The guy at night gives you a massive portion so $11 for the plate is ok. The guy during the day- not so much. The place has gone downhill from when I was a child. Do I recommend their food though? Absolutely- It's good food. Maybe I'd give this place a 3.5 star rating. Thank you Action Bronson for putting me on to Roti Boti. So popping. Not the best ambiance in the place, but it's well worth it. Huge selection. I got some kind of sage & chicken + mystery chicken over rice. The meat was falling off the bones. I am still full 3 hours later. Pause. The guys working there don't do the best job explaining what each thing is. I've had my fair share of middle eastern/indian type food, but didn't recognize a few dishes, and I still didn't know after asking them. It all looked great though. Just gotta pick based on instinct. It came out to $10.50, which is actually a little more than I was expecting since the place looks so bare bone and run down. Definitely worth it though for the amount you get. Ahhhh... Roti Boti (although their sign says 'ROTIBOTI') - the original joint for spicy-food lovers with strong tongues and even stronger stomachs. My most-favorite, and rarely available, is the diced livers in some delicious, not-so-spicy sauce. I only saw it there 3 times in the past 2 years. When asked about it once the server answered that only 'the owner' makes it, and it doesn't happen too often - too bad for that. Besides that, they have heavenly naan bread, roasted boneless chicken on skewers and creamy salad dressing that is a real treat next to all that spice in everything else (no wonder they serve you a courtesy PITCHER of water when you're eating in. ---Warning! Here comes 'Debbie Downer': It was a Friday night, the place was packed with 3 or 4 families eating in (that's all the place could hold before the expansion in recent months) and even more men standing online for take-out. I ordered four items, which the man prepared and packed for me right away, and four naan breads, which he said had to be made. I found myself waiting for the naans for over twenty-five minutes, that's because I happened to space out with my phone. In the meantime the man took other people's takeout orders (including those who followed my order) and kept packing naan-after-naan, eight at a time and letting them be off to celebrate their meals. I was not sure what to make of this, at least I'm not going to attempt writing it here. But, the man only apologized when I walked up and asked politely "Where are all those men with all those naan breads, who ordered after me?" --- and here, I must emphasize 'ordered after me', because I would totally understand if they all called in for pick up; no, they ordered just as I did; walk-in. So, the man apologized, claiming a high holiday was underway, and that he was understaffed. On the contrary, I was in no rush, and ensured him not worry about me, because I would be coming back there over and over again, just like I have done in the past 2 years. I did mention politely, that there may people out there who may not be too 'patient', especially those not celebrating any holidays, but I understood and wished him a happy Ramadan. With all that being said, I ate there last week and loved the food again. The man seems to remember me now a little more. End of Debbie Downer--- Pros: Open 24/7; cheap and original food; plasma TV with some original Bollywood movies on it to watch while there. I am not sure what people see in this place, but the food was terrible. We ordered nehari, behari kabob and chicken tikka and not a single thing met the taste standard. The behari kabab were hard and dry (they were supposed to be soft and juicy) and literally shredded as you broke them and it had fat in it. The chicken was hard, and extremely dry. It felt like they used really cheap meat for both chicken and beef. Oh did I forget to mention that they microwave the BBQ and serve it to you? Yeah, it's not fresh at all and the meat felt really old and tasteless. The lamb nehari was tasteless as well. Like it was made from pre-packed masalas by inexperienced cooks. Definitely a big disappointment. I wish I could say "A" for authenticity, but it's far from what you call authentic Pakistani food. "F" for fail. You can make better tasting food at home. This place has gone down hill. Ate here with my brother in law and sister about a year ago and the place was bigger. They have no downsized and it's hard to find a spot to sit and eat. I remember the food being better about a year ago as well. I speak Urdu so you'd think it shouldn't be a problem talking to the cashier about what you want, etc but I'm not sure he really understood me. There also isn't any type of indication on who is next, etc. You just mill up to the serving dishes, look around and try to capture the guy's attention. The food was average. The kababs seemed dry and the chana were sort of thick. Nothing to write home about, just your average meal. Saving grace is that it wasn't more then about $10. read more

Nom, the perfect place to grab quick, take-home grubbin' My buddy and I proposed to eat at the first restaurant at the end of our street on a weekend lunch run. Great call.The dishes weren't labeled, but we took a chance on just ordering all the mystery vegetarian options over rice. Portions are generous for $7 bowl-- I had to finish it in two meals. Whilst walking on the busy Astoria Blvd street, my sister and I happened upon Roti Boti. Living in Astoria all our lives, we never stepped foot in this place! Immediately, my sister and I craved samosas, and were drawn by the positive aura this establishment gave off, and this is 1am! As soon as we enter, we were plunged in an array of incredible aromas that just were heavenly. Already hooked, the man behind the counter started a very welcoming conversation, and it lead to various tastings of dishes, delicious flavors, and welcoming smiles all around. He offered we should taste everything! We made up our minds to order, and he was already taking care of everything. He tells us to sit down, and that the food will be brought out to us, again being very welcoming. In an instant, a jug of water and an appetizer of salad was put on the table, by the extremely nice waitress. The portions were immense! The food was incredible, healthy, and all the most delicious. Real, fresh, authentic Indian Cuisine that is truly nothing less than spectacular. As we became fuller by the seconds, we were checked up on by the waitress, asking if we needed anything else, but we were so full and satisfied, we had to decline. Even at the end of the meal they checked up on us! This place is definitely a great, local spot that you should definitely visit! A++ read more

Chick pea curry I had the other day was as salty as hell! This place can cook good food, but saltiness is very inconsistent. It wasn't the first time I had this crazy salty curry here. It's great for what it is, semi-cafeteria style restaurant. It's a little intimidating when you walk in as there is no one to ask you if you need a table or what the process is. The selection is great and nicely spiced too boot. Atmosphere wise, fugetaboutit... at its peak it's loud, undecorated and my friend and I were even asked to change tables in the middle our dinner to accommodate a larger party. I went to Roti Boti the other day, usually I just order naan to go, but decided on a full meal this time. I got the chicken/spinach saag, and after eating it, not sure if they left it out too long, but I got a major stomach virus and spent 48 hours in the restroom..not pretty! And it was from bacteria in the chicken...another thing I noticed while I was there, they don't use gloves, and that was just gross...he touched the naan with his bare hands. Anyone who eats here so be wary so as not to get sick. I lived in India for 2 years, ate street food, etc and never got sick, and here in my own neighborhood it happened. read more

I drop by here quite often with my cousins who live in Astoria... the food won't dissapoint you, but definitely get take out! The place is pretty dirty looking on the inside, and doesn't seem to be very clean. It's a hearty joint to just pay a cheap price and take a good tasting meal home. Try the butter chicken... It's different than most butter chicken dishes at other restaraunts. They're pretty generous with the size of their meals. The menu is expansive, good for both vegetarians, and meat lovers. While the neighborhood is a little.......not upscale, it is well worth the trek from the subway. This was the last meal I choose to eat before I moved away from NYC. They've newly remodeled the dining area and there is even a brand new flat screen playing non stop bollywood. The Chick Peas are like mana from heaven. Once you put the first spoonful in our mouth, you will be shocked at how good it really is. And the second spoonful is even better! The Spinach Chicken is top notch. Careful of the Chicken Tikka, as it is spicy enough to cause a heart attack, but I would say that if you die from eating here, you will die a very happy and full individual. I used to eat there almost every day back in the early 2000's when it was newly opened. They had some of the best food around , especially the chicken chargha and chick peas were really tasty, not to forget the freshly cooked chicken tikka and the imported fish. read more

I love Dal Tadka. Went in and ordered it and they said they had 3 kinds. ?? I said give me the spiciest - he said they were all spicy. I think he just gave me a little bit of this and that from the cafeteria-style line. Didn't make the debit card minimum so I rounded it out with meatballs and samosas. One of my friends recommended this place for take-out. So this was my first time getting take-out from Roti Boti and it was awesome. We ordered 20 chicken kababs and 14 pieces of naan for $44. $1.50 for each chicken kabab and $1 for each piece of naan. They also added a complimentary salad with dressing with the order, which is a plus. the chicken kababs were spicy, but just the right amount of spiciness. They also added a yogurt sauce for people that need it to lessen the effect of the spices. I'll definitely get take-out from this place again. They have a few tables, but I enjoy eating in a homey environment, which is not what this place gave me a feel of when I picked up the take-out.
