Out for a drive around Quabbin Reservior on a rainy Saturday in August brought us to Rose 32 Bread, a delightful bakery/cafe in Gilbertville, that was given high marks by fellow Yelper, Don P. His judgement is well respected, and was spot on in this case. We had just recently eaten lunch, so we didn't sit at a table to eat. But I'd checked their website and their Local Loaf of bread, as they call it, caught my attention, as well as those wonderful croissants that Don P had raved about. I had to sample both. I tried the bread as soon as we got back in my truck to leave. It's described on the website as being made from 2 kinds of wheat grown by, and milled at Four Star Farms in Northfield, MA. The bread has a flavor reminiscent of a great sourdough bread, with a wonderfully chewy crust. I eat it as a dessert, with just sweet cream butter. Next time I come, I'll try their "Gilbertville Loaf", made from wheat grown in this little town of 2990 people, and ground to flour right in this bakery. It couldn't get any better or fresher than that. The croissants lived up to their advance billing. They were soft and buttery inside, slightly chewy outside. I'm not well versed in croissant "language", but these were everything our fellow Yelper claimed them to be. Another shout out to you, Don, for making me aware of this bakery that I've so often driven by in the past. It's a wonderful cafe, a true "hidden gem", in every sense of the phrase, in a very small town, where you'd not expect this level of quality. I'll return soon! read more

This bakery/cafe is totally way out there, close to the middle of nowhere. But, if your in the area and want to eat some delicious pastries or have a healthy meal, than this is the place for you. And the pecan sticky buns are the best that I've had in the USA. I think they use real local butter and maple syrup... I didn't ask b/c the flavor is enough to break a healthy gluten free streak. But the sticky bun has the consistency of a croissant with a maple syrup glaze. The hazelnut cake is also divine. I couldn't even stop to take a photo of it. It had about 6 different layers and was a very complicated and delicious pastry, well worth the indulgence. The owners used to own several bakeries in California, but decided to relocate here. This place a definitely a gem. Plan a whole driving in the country trip around stopping here for lunch and definitely leave room for the pastries!! read more

The pastries are too sweet - they're overpriced for the quality. The bread is okay. Most loaves I've ever gotten have been a little burnt. I couldn't taste any spice in the buffalo sourdough. This place is fine, just not great. read more

The people that work here are so nice and pleasant! There is a large variety of drinks, breads, sweets and lunch items. All the pastries looked absolutely amazing, I wanted one of everything. Nice patio area as well. Must be a popular spot because people were parked on the street. read more

Croissants are now up to $3.00 each, and I've been told quality has greatly deteriorated. Good friends who buy bread here weekly say the croissants are always doughy/wet/raw in the middle. According to a pastry chef colleague, this is likely a dough staging issue or they're being baked while cold and/or at too high a temperature. This bakery keeps raising prices and in spite of now being open only four days per week, it seems to be profit driven = quantity over quality these days. read more

OK this place is great! I'm very particular about my pastries and baked goods and this place knows what they are doing! Amazing assortment of French pastries (I cant wait to come back to try them all!). We tried the Carrot Cake which was perfect. Coffee was excellent! And i'm a coffee snob, so take my word for it! I had a turkey sandwich which was good-especially on the home made bread-I think that's what really made it. My husband opted for the breakfast sandwich and I took a bite and I was instantly jealous! Amazing! Seating is scarce in this place, and you will probably end up having to share a large table with strangers, though we were lucky enough to score a little table for two in the back. I'm thinking that in warmer months a patio opens up with outdoor seating so we will DEFINITELY be back when it gets warmer. They have a parking lot, but it fills up quick! This is an amazing bakery utilizing local Hardwick wheat from the Whitesfield Farm in their sourdough and wood-fired oven. Their focacia is excellent, as were the multiple unique pastries and pies that reflect the owners prior experience in the urban setting at west coast (San Francisco), where I lived previously. Staffs were polite and helpful in introducing the tasty choices. Deli looks delicious as well but I have yet to try. Though I live 1.5 hours away in Boston, I would definitely stop by if I'm near the area. read more

I've been back for more punishment! The one star is based solely on the OWNERS bad, unprofessional, obnoxious attitude. One of THE WORST customer service/appreciation experiences ever .. anywhere (as in my life). Delicious breakfasts (scrambled eggs with ham & potatoes, cooked perfectly), especially if you can digest gluten. Many nearby residents, including me, have gluten intolerance and wish they'd at least offer Udi's gluten free bread, like all cafes & restaurants do now. As most reviews tell you the owner is quite rude (the staff is pretty cold and snooty). With multiple requests to carry some gluten free treats, over the last couple of years, there is also a very unfriendly reply. Even crappy local diners offer flourless chocolate cake or some local gluten free bread. They do great business because the food is good but they need customer service training, for sure! read more

This is one of our FAVORITE places to eat.... super casual, super delicious, and great staff. You order your food at the counter/register and they bring it to you. They have "communal" types tables, which is such a nice concept. You can say hello to your fellow gastronomicals, or keep to yourself.... dinners' choice. We've been going there for lunch or breakfast since they opened, and we've never had a bad meal. The breads & bakery goods are AMAZING! We always take goodies home for later. We LOVE their decadent chocolate mousse! We have too many favorites to list here, we recommend trying everything! I can't speak to the other folks who have had bad experiences, but my wife and I had a wonderful to-go meal from here this past weekend. Turkey BLT on cranberry raisin bread, chef salad and a cinnamon pecan bun. No beverages. Damage: $18 The chef salad was AMAZING! Literally the best we have ever had. No boiled ham and american cheese here. We're talking saprosetta, mortadella, chunked turkey, swiss cheese and local farm cheese. Steamed green beans, tomato, onion over a bed of all field greens and spinach, no filler lettuce. And a delicious balsamic vinaigrette. Plus they throw in a couple of slices of baguette. The turkey blt was delicious. The ingredients worked perfectly together on the store made cranberry raisin toast. Served with a bag of Lay's (My only complaint. Get some local chips or just a pickle, but skip the Lay's. It hurts the image.) The Cinnamon-pecan bun...OMFG! Deliciousness in a buttery, flaky, sticky sweet, toasted pecan covered, massive roll! I can't wait to go back and try the coffee and tea. Judging by the crowd, they're racking up quite a following. P.S. Local & Organic breads at a very reasonable price. Many under $4 a loaf. Great place and worth the drive! Discovered this place recently and went with my parents and two young kids- both under 3. All our sandwiches were delicious, eggs were great, and the pastries were so worth it! I changed my rating from 4 stars having breakfast there once to 5 stars because I just bought 5 kinds of bread to bring home and they were so delicious and...perfectly crispy on the outside and unbelievably soft inside. So I made a sample platter with balsamic vinegar and olive oil. My favorite was the Moroccan Olive. Can't wait to make a tuna melt sandwich with the Ciabbatta. Well worth the 1 hr round trip commute since you can freeze the extra bread until the next trip. read more

Loved the experience here. Not only were the baked goods that we purchased delicious but the service was incredible. The place was packed at just after 12 on a Sunday but the young ladies behind the counter were all so professional & friendly. We were on our way in 15 minutes! We tried a chocolate roll ( like a round pain du chocolate), a sticky bun, a black bottom cupcake & a loaf of 9 grain walnut bread. Our iced lattes were outstanding as well -- kudos to getting fresh coffee from Barrington Coffee Roasters in Lee. We'll definitely be back soon. Great little bakery with good coffee and sandwiches. It was incredibly busy during my visit here and I suspect that's usually the case in the fall. While I have been spoiled by living a ten minute walk from one of the best bread bakeries in New England, I can still appreciate Rose32's offerings. The bread is definitely worth stopping in for. Yummy bread, best around. The service has pretty standard every time we have been here; they got the job done! I usually buy multiple pastries or cookies and things like that. I'm what I've had I can say that everything has been pretty delicious. The chocolate crinkle cookies are really really delicious and fudgy inside. I love that a place of such cutting edge flavors and fresh ingredients is in the humble community of gilbertville. It's a perfect place to get a few loaves of french baguettes, or for some tasty dessert treats! It's also perfect to grab a delicious lunch or breakfast. If you do your research you will learn that the owners are very seasoned and well respected in the culinary world. This place rocks!! We came across it by accident a few years ago while cycling in the area. Got a quick sandwich and a baguette to go that time. We were in the area again, so I said we must go for breakfast. Wonderful coffee drinks and organic local teas. I got the kale, green pepper breakfast hash with their oatmeal walnut toast. My husband got an egg, sausage and cheese breakfast sandwich on a cheddar onion biscuit. Divine!! They have a beautiful bakery case of house made cinnamon rolls, tea cakes, cookies and some of the best bread I've ever had! I ended up buying a cranberry raisin loaf this time. Great for turkey sandwiches. They have a few large community tables and both indoor and outdoor seating under cute red umbrellas. This place has a steady stream of loyal customers! Rose 32 is a small deli and a bakery on Rt 32 in Hardwick, MA (pretty sure the building used to be an auto body shop) very nice and clean! The lunch menu is limited. Wish they had more choices. I may have reviewed this before or I may have refrained in a vain effort to keep the lines from growing longer out the door. The food is pricey but it is the best. If you want better pastry plan a trip to Quebec and even then you might be hard pressed. Top shelf bread, sandwiches, cakes also. To be fair, there is one standout shortcoming. The coffee. A place of this caliber should offer a nice dark roast to compliment the outstanding pastry. The bread is the best thing here. Had a soy cappuccino and it was eh. Brew tea is over priced ($4 for a small cup!) and hardly any veg options because almost everything has meat. No vegan pastry options. Every time I've gone I've sampled the bread though and its always great, as is the aesthetic of the cafe and outdoor seating. Have yet to try the iced coffee. We drove out to meet a friend for lunch with our six month old and got there a little early. No line, so we grabbed some seats at a table by the door. We dragged a high chair over, got situated, and began chatting up our table-mates. Everything looked delicious, but we chose to wait for the last in our party to order (and as we did, the place became steadily busier). Ten or so minutes went by, our friend showed up and just as he went to sit, an employee/owner/someone in charge rushed over and told us we needed to get up and get in line and order before sitting as that was their policy and she was sure we'd understand. Everyone at the table audibly gasped. We obligingly hauled the baby back out of the high chair and joined the line but in the end decided to bail since there was clearly going to be nowhere for us to sit. Horrible. Of course if we had been instructed to order before sitting when we got there we of course would have done so. Waiting until we'd been there for some time and until the place was quite busy was unconscionable. I should also add we drove out from Hadley, about a 45 minute drive, because we'd heard lovely things. I now assume those rave reviews refer to the food and not the staff. read more
