Everything was not good. Husband had chili verde which he was kind of nervous about eating the pork. He also complained everything was salty. I had a beef shredded beef taco and a cheese enchilada rice and beans and nothing was what we would call good. And it all started with chips and salsa that were also not good. This place has great Mexican plates, however the shrimp ala diabla wasn't as spicy as described by the server. There were too few shrimps for the price. Nonetheless, the portions for the other dishes were good and everything tasted great. The Molcajete is a must try, but be warned that the spiciness can overwhelming for those who are not good with spicy food. I have to say I'm very surprised by the 4.5 star rating. I guess the 4.5 star rating is relative to being in the mountains. I found the food to be very mediocre. I got a combo with Chili Relleno, Tamale, and Cheese Enchilada. Everything was just sort of bland. The salsa, the red sauce--just about everything. On a positive note, the rice and beans were solid. When I was reading the reviews, and I saw a posted picture of the host of "Restaurant Impossible" to go along with a 4.5 star rating with well over 200 review, I was expecting a lot more. The food here was comparable to El Torito. Just average Mexican food. I live in So Cal and get all kinds of good and bad Mexican food. The 4.5 stars is misleading. OMG, if you have never tried them you have really missed out. This is by far my favorite restaurant on the Mountain. You have to try the Cadillac Margarita, the best. The fajitas are to die for. Hard to get a seat in winter, but summer is on the way and they have outdoor seating. read more

Found this local spot on a drive thru date day with the wife. We were hungry and looking for somewhere to chill for a bit. Reviews were good on yelp, so decided to try for ourselves. We got the taco plate and shared it. One beef taco, one chicken taco, and all beans. Wife loved the beans. Both tacos were good but the shredded beef taco was BOMB AF . I almost ordered an additional one a la carte, except I had filled up on the BOMB AF chips and salsa. Place has indoor and outdoor seating. You literally feel like you are sitting in a tree house at the too of the trees. Cool ambiance. Staff was friendly and service was great. Prices aren't too bad either. Not sure when we will be back in that area, but if you are by Running Springs/Lake Arrowhead area give them a try. read more

When visiting our lake getaway home with family we often take a trip to Rosalva's on the night we want to take break from cooking. Our visit on Sunday July 5th I expected to be no different. We were a party of 6, my husband, two kids and my parents. The pros: *The food was tasty, while not authentic Mexican it hits the spot given the limited options around the area. *Food arrived quickly, almost too quickly. *Tables were spaced out meeting social distance guidelines and I felt safe on the patio environment. *The wait to be seated given they are only using some tables was less than 15 minutes. *Reasonably priced for what you get. The Cons: *Our server who never did share her name approached our table did not say hello, welcome, or any inviting conversation other than what can I get you. I asked if she was taking drink or food orders and she replied all of it. *The limited menu offerings are posted on a board for you to look over and remember when are seated. No menus at the table so don't forget what you want to order or she will send you back to the board to check your number. *The server was put off that we did not have our number of the items we were ordering memorized... instead I just said taco/chille relleno combination. Oddly she being the employee did not know it either so she had to walk to the board to check it and returned with an eye roll. *Before we were able to finish our meals she returned to ask if we needed boxes and left the check on the table. NO thanks for coming, can I get you anything else, no come again. As we waited for our payment to get processed our server stood at the table next to us to take an order. The guest at the table asked for tacos, she asked if they wanted Mexican tacos or American tacos. When the guest asked what the difference was she replied "the Mexican tacos were a shade darker" and laughed. Maybe she thought that to be appropriate but I think even the guest was embarrassed at the insensitivity of her joke. I certainly was and found it offensive. I mean I have eaten Mexican food in many places, I think it's common knowledge they are either soft or hard shell tacos lady. I like this server also work in the restaurant business, upon re-opening we welcome back our guests with open arms and appreciate each one of them. Keep the economy going, be kind to those you serve and be kind to those that serve you. The ultimate take away is it's an average place to eat with typically decent enough service after all it is a hole in the wall but if you can avoid the miserable, older middle aged Caucasian lady with stringy reddish brown hair and a ponytail braid on top of her head you will be better off. read more

This place is totally worth it. We stopped here on our way to Lake Arrowhead from Big Bear. It was around and there were 4 of us. We wanted to eat some good food before heading for our lake tour. I had this place on my yelp search and it definitely looked good. Thanks fellow yelpers!!Parking can be tricky as this place is right off the highway. We were greeted as we entered and seated in a beautiful table overlooking the mountains. This place had a charm about it. It was cloudy that day and everything looked lovely. We ordered our sodas and were given fresh tortillas and salsas to start with. We placed our orders and everything looked very fresh. Everything was delicious. We got the taco plates and tostadas. A new Mexican restaurant opened on the mountain this fall. Hortencia's Mexican Grill is right next to the fabulous Lou Eddie's Pizza. We stopped in the other day, while picking up pizza, to grab a menu. The aroma brought us back for a taste. I ordered a chile verde plate ($10), a carne asada taco (Mexican style, of course; $2.25), and shared some flan ($4). The plate and taco were very good, and the flan was excellent. This is set to be a great local place for Mexican food; it's not fancy, but it is good. Upgraded to five stars. It's priced itself with consistently tasty food and good service. The small soft crunchy cubed ice!) and order from a typical and traditional Mexican American menu. There is combo plates to salads and cocktales and soups, etc. They also serve fajita plates, you get me. I ordered the #29, which is a cheese enchilada and chili relleno with rice, beans, sour cream and melted cheese. This is why this place gets 5 stars besides the amazing view. They were awesome. We walked in on a cloudy slightly rainy day with our dog. We asked if there was anywhere to sit with our pup and immediately let us to their outdoor patios wiped off tables and brought over a heater for us. Vanessa and Omar were awesome . They could not have been more friendly, courteous and attentive. We had chip and salsa before we even got to our table after we grabbed our pup. They both were great to our dog as well and pleasant to talk to. Now the food. We got chili verde plate and chili relleno and enchilada plate with a cup of menudo along with 2 drinks. $31 and we were full and happy. The relleno was de-stemmed and seeded and the chili verde was super tasty and homemade. At the end we got a bonus bone for our puppers. We will definitely be back. read more

We had seen Rosalva's when driving by, but we usually avoid Mexican food. My parents cook authentic Mexican food, so we get disappointed very easily when eating out. My husband was craving some Mexican food, and I wasn't in the mood to cook so we decided to try it. We got there right after they opened and got to choose our table. We ordered Micheladas, and we both ordered huevos con chorizó. They brought out some chips and salsa, which were fresh and good. The micheladas were a good size and the mix was really good. They had a chamoy and chili powder on the rim. It was delicious and refreshing for the warm weather. They brought out our plates and we were surprised of how much food you get. There was chorizo con huevo, rice, beans and sour cream. Oh! The first bite was so good, it reminded me of my moms cooking. It's very good and authentic. Boooooo. Food Poisoning. I used to love Hortencia's! I would've happily given this restaurant five stars, however, this weekend I got a combination plate with a side of food poisoning, so now it just gets a negative review and a call to the county department of public health. The rundown: On Sunday, my husband was out with his brother grabbing lunch in Lake Arrowhead. I stayed home to do chores and had not yet eaten anything that day, so on their way back, they stopped at Hortencia's in Skyforest to pick up food to-go. We've ordered take-out several times from here in the past, and the food was always great, just like it was when we've eaten at the restaurant. My husband bought me a combination plate with a cheese enchilada, a chicken tamale, refried beans, rice, lettuce, tomatoes, sour cream, guac, and tortilla chips. I ate the food within minutes of them receiving the order. Neither my husband nor my brother-in-law ate from Hortencia's that day -- I was the only one. Neither my husband nor my brother-in-law got sick that day, either. Again -- I was the only one. About five hours after finishing the meal, I began feeling incredibly nauseated -- I had not consumed any other food between the time I ate Hortencia's and the time I started feeling sick. From approximately 9:00 p.m. until 3:30 a.m. the next morning, I was ill with food poisoning and had a low-grade fever. I'll let your imagination fill in the blanks. Throughout Monday, I was pretty wiped out after a long night of being sick, but I no longer exhibited any symptoms beyond a sore stomach and fatigue. As of Tuesday, I was back to normal. Utilizing the powers of deduction, my husband and I concluded it had to have been Hortencia's food that made me sick. Up until the point that I ate that meal, I felt great and was not ill, plus, my husband and I had eaten all the same food together over the course of the previous three days -- and as mentioned earlier, neither my husband nor my brother-in-law got sick. I also didn't leave the house before eating the food, so I didn't pick up a "bug" elsewhere in public. On Wednesday following my ordeal, I gave the San Bernardino County Environmental Health Services Department a call to report my symptoms, because if others become sick from food-borne illness from Hortencia's in Skyforest, the county needs to know so the issue can be rectified. Also, my husband noticed that the friendly employees who are usually at the Hortencia's were not there on this last visit -- instead, there was a surly woman who chastised customers for using the main entrance and who had an overly sour disposition. Needless to say, this last visit was utterly disappointing and I may avoid both Hortencia's on the Rim for a while. read more

Considering the location its a pretty delicious deal! My girlfriend Natalie V Bock LOVED this fine location especially the margaritas and the chile rellenos. The actual restaurant is small and acquired but it works. In fact when they first sat us I thought it was a joke but it actually offered a lot of privacy. The dishes are platters to feed a trojan. This is a great stop especially if you are cruising into the area. Bathrooms are down stairs so be aware and facing out side near the kitchen. Great super size margaritas! Our visit was of 3 adults and it was Jan 3rd. 2018 on that night Natalie talked about her reflections of her life. Server was attentive and our platters of food was all yummi. The corner we sat on had a pretty view facing the side deck. This fine restaurant will for ever remind me of that precious fun dinner. Natalie surrendered her body on December 1st. 2019 due to brain cancer. Natural I look forward in my return to celebrate with a margarita, Natalie life and her memories. Came here with 7 people on Saturday and it was decent. The service was pretty fast honestly. That was one of the pros. We were sat outside on the upper deck and it was really nice. Weather was perfect and when it started to get a little cooler, they brought out heat lamps. A few complaints: -in the enchilada my niece had, the cheese wasn't melted. -they didn't bring out my flour tortillas for my carne asada entree (I actually forgot to tell them about this issue) -the food was ok; maybe I should've tried something else, but it tastes like ordinary Mexican food that I'm used to All in all, I think this place deserved a 3.5/5 based on our whole experience. I rounded it up to a 4/5 because the service was so quick and to be frank, a 3/5 would be too low. It was a little bit better than average. Nothing spectacular. Yum! We went for lunch today. Got a seat right away, service was great and we both liked the food. I was thrilled to see sopapillas on the menu. Well, they were on the dessert menu. I got an order plain with honey like we grew upon. Someone from the restaurant walked by after they were delivered and saw them. He thought they looked over cooked. Wow, I really enjoyed my meal here tonight. First off, there is no beer on tap but their bottled beer comes out once cold with a chilled glass. I got a cup of the albondiga soup and thought it was some of the best I've ever had. Even had a great sized chunk of meat in it. For my meal I got the fajitas trio which has chicken breast, steak and shrimp. There was not only a great amount of meat, but it was all very tasty.
