He gave me an hour window on the following Monday afternoon that he would show up to do the estimate. On Monday that hour came and went so I decided to call him up to see if he was still going to show, more mumbling and some excuse about a windshield wiper being the cause of his tardiness and then he said he would be there in 5 or 10 minutes. After waiting another 30 minutes I decided just to go back to work and if he ever showed up the wife was there to take care of it. She called me 20 minutes later saying that besides being a complete dick he also threw a kick towards our dog (who stands a very tall 14 inches from the ground and has never been unpleasant to anyone in his life). We easily came to the decision not to hire Howard for this simple job, but can you imagine the horror story I would be telling if we did.

This last time, we had three Junipers go down in the backyard because of the late Spring snow. I got a hold of Howard, and he told me he would be out the next day for an estimate. They are quite a busy crew, and I was glad to just get an estimate early. He came out and saw how bad they were and said he would do them as soon as possible, but couldn't promise anything soon. One thing with them, is they will give you and estimate, but you may have to wait a week or so for the crew. He got out here a few days later, and called the night before. I wasn't expecting it so soon, but was grateful. They did and outstanding job removing them, grinding the stumps and removing all the debris. It was exactly as they have done two other times. Their service is worth the wait, and we have never been disappointed.

After visits from five other tree services/arborists, Elvis came by and offered the best overall combo of expertise and price without trying to upsell. This was late October and he told us he could get us on the schedule for early December and would call to set that up. I came home from work yesterday and was very pleased with what I found. My front yard looks much better and if it ever snows, I'm not worried about branches falling on my roof or any car parked in the driveway. Mission accomplished! Bonus goods: Elvis removed some small bushes from my yard and not only hauled away debris from this job, but took some large tree limbs and debris that broke off months ago--at no additional charge! This was huge and much appreciated. He also gave us advice on how to remove an unsightly shrub that came with the house. Minor issues: 1) After the initial estimate and agreement in October, I had to call Steel City in late November to check in and see if we were still on for our projected time frame. 2) I had planned on using a credit card to pay, but they add 3% to the bill. While I understand the need to recoup processor fees, folks who cannot drop large sums of money up front should be aware of this. I would hire them again based on expertise, concern for customer needs, pricing, and quality of work--especially the prices, which were substantially less than other arborists. Elvis went above and beyond the call of duty.
