So I'd been curious about the poutine at this place, ever since the first time I came here and saw the big sign outside advertising their poutine. When I read that the gravy for their Classic Poutine was vegetarian, I knew that I *had* to come here and try it. So...finally tried it. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't superb either. Not really sure how they managed to score 1st place for a Poutine Challenge in 2014. Granted, it was a Butter Chicken poutine that took home the prize and not the Classic Poutine, but still... The cheese curds did have some ooey gooeyness going for them which is always good to see. I'd have liked to have seen a lot more of both the cheese curds and the gravy though on my poutine. I think my daughter's plate of poutine had a bit more gravy than mine. Overall though, I feel that there could have been more of both the cheese curds and the gravy. Flavor was pretty good. Not something I need to come back and have again though. read more

Coffee shop atmosphere but with more substantial food options - diner food like burgers and poutine plus the standard premade wraps and baked goods. Coffee/tea and beer/wine to drink. Lots of seating. It seemed like I came at an off time, and it was nice and quiet. Veggie burger: The falafel patty was a little crumbly but very tasty. I got the salad for my side, and was glad to see that it was a pretty substantial pile of salad since it costs $3 to upgrade from fries. Everything in the salad was fresh. I liked the cranberries and crushed walnuts. The vinaigrette was more oily than I would've liked. Vanilla blender (with espresso): Okay. Nice taste and not too sweet. As an iced latte I would've had no complaints, but as a blended drink, I thought it could've used more ice... but maybe I just waited too long to drink it. Looking at the baked goods display, I saw they have the same sandwiches/wraps and baked goods that you see at quite a few cafes in Vancouver that don't do their own food prep... I've tried most of the baked goods at various other places and would say they're so-so. I do like the deep dutch brownie but everything else is just too sweet and that's the only thing you can taste. I would definitely recommend ordering off the menu for something put together in house rather than getting something out of the case. read more

Ordered the Classic Breakfast for $7.99 and I was pleasantly surprised. The food came quickly and the plate was heaped with food. 2 eggs perfectly scrambled with perfect bacon slices, a thick slice of toast and a healthy portion of hash brown potatoes. Everything was piping hot. A lot more than I was expecting for $8. The staff were friendly and professional. They quickly cleared and cleaned the tables for new customers, which is something I despair of in most coffee shops these days. The baked goods look fresh and the menu is diverse. Free wifi as well. Why would you go across the street to the "national" chain that is owned by a Brazilian conglomerate? I will return. read more

Roots Cafe is located on the corner of Main and 49th, just a few blocks away from Langara College. I've been here once before, over a year ago, when meeting my husband after his Saturday morning class. (I wish my accounting class was on Saturday and not Wednesday evening!) I don't recall much from my first visit except that they sold wine. So after my horrific commute to school tonight (see my Translink review), I headed to Roots Cafe for a couple glasses of wine before class. (Trust me, I needed it!) At $5 a glass, the price was reasonable, although it appears that they do 5oz pours, not 6. And the wine was just so-so, although that didn't stop me from getting a second glass! I also had a tandoori chicken wrap, and it was delicious. While this cafe is nothing spectacular, I'm grateful it was there. Food, coffee, booze, and WiFi -- it does the job. read more

An alternative coffee shop for people who hate Starbucks. Coffee is fine. The dark mocha is excellent. They claim to make prize winning poutine. I ain't eating poutine if I only have a few days in the Asian food capital of the Western hemisphere. But the poutine might be pretty good. As far as I can tell, their neighborhood, Punjabi Village is surprisingly short on non-chain-coffee-houses relative to the rest of Vancouver. (Vancouverites - if I am wrong about this, send me a blast.) Roots would just fade into the woodwork if it was located in my heavily-coffee-house-intense hometown. The cheese curds are from Montreal and had a stringyness to them, not like the stuff you get from New York Fries. How can you go wrong with poutine mixed with butter chicken!!!???? I also tried the one of the specials of the day, beef brisket pie stewed in stout beer, That was pretty tasty too. Mind you, I make beef brisket at home Chinese style so this was a little sweeter than what I am used to, but, that doesn't mean that it wasn't good. Far from that. It was tasty. A friend of mine was visiting from Toronto, so he, my wife and I decided to stop here for lunch before his flight. It's one of those cafe's where you order your food at a cash register and you pick it up at the counter when ready. It wasn't super busy, so we thought it would be pretty quick. We ordered all at once on the same bill so everything would come out at the same time, but it didn't. They give you this little buzzer to let you know when you're food is ready. After 15 minutes we get a buzz and my friend's calzone, which is pre-made, so you just have to heat it up is ready. That kind of makes sense, and we thought the fish sandwich and macaroni and cheese should be on its way shortly. After 15 minutes, I told my friend to eat his food or else it would get cold, so he started. Another 15 minutes passes and after he was finished and we were still talking, the fish sandwich finally comes out and then 5 minutes after that the macaroni and cheese comes out. I don't know why it took so long to to prepare basically deep fryer and pre made food and I don't know why they thought it would be a good idea to space the food out 30 minutes apart. The staff did not even acknowledge how long the food was taking and seemed pretty indifferent when I mentioned how late the food was coming out. The food itself is good, but it is pretty standard diner food that is mostly premade and warmed up. It would improve with better customer service and organization. read more

[Take out warning] We got take out for the office and it fell overwhelmingly short. I had the chicken burger, and the chicken patty was... lets just say, one cm thick at the best. Thats sad for a chicken burger. My other coworkers specified to leave out specific sauces, and things that they didn't want in their burgers and they simply did not accommodate - if this was an allergy scenario, it would be a no go. All their burgers come with fries, and we even specified that we want ketchup with the order, but they ended up giving us 2-3 small containers of ketchup for an order of 10 people... uhhh what? Beside the franchise coffee shops, this is another good little café on Main St. I just picked this café to meet with my friend for chic chatting. My mocha was great!! My friend's green tea latte was fantastic too! Staffs were friendly and we got an extra 2 cups of hot water after an hour chatting. I LOOOOVVEEE Roots Cafe. There's something about the combination of comfort foods that they offer, the music they play, and even the eclectic combination of seating that they have that makes the place so darn inviting. My go-to has been the Butter chicken Poutine for years but recently I gave their Angus Beef Burger (10.95) a try and it's AMAZING. the Bun is nicely toasted and is slightly crispy. The beef patty is fairly thick and juicy, though there's something about the surface of it that makes me think they cook it some other way aside from grilling. In either case, it's seasoned really nicely and has a good balance of BBQ sauce and mayo. It's served with some super crispy "Costco style" french fries. Me thinks they use an air fryer for their deep frying in order to keep everything from being too greasy. read more

My partner and I live across the street so have visited this café many times. The service is always so friendly and my personal favorite drink is their dark mocha (I get it with soy). They have many milk alternatives which is really nice. If you go before 11 they sell inexpensive breakfasts that are very filling, and the potatoes are really well seasoned and yummy. Eh, extremely average, nothing special. I was in town for a very fast overnight trip and wanted something for breakfast . Yelp reviews looked good and nothing else was open in a 2 mile radius of where I stayed. Coffee is good, standard latte. No complaints. Breakfast menu is limited and weird. Nothing looked good. Cucumber on a breakfast sandwich ? Yuck. The pastries were all pre-packaged, nothing seemed fresh or appetizing. I ended up with mac & cheese, which i know is a weird beeakfast choice, but the meatless options were so limited. While carby, it seemed least likely to be covered in grease. The mac & cheese was beautiful, straight from the oven with a nicely broiled top. Unfortunately, it was also flavorless and had a layer of grease at the bottom. I asked for red pepper flakes and they had none. Only Sriracha & Frank's red. I HATE food waste, but it was so greasy, i could only get through about a quarter of it. I could feel it in my body the entire day. I am not familiar with this town, so i have no idea about other options. If you just want a cup of coffee and free wifi, this might be the place. As far as local neighborhood cafes goes, Roots is a mainstay. Owned by a mother and daughter combo, they bring a lot of homely goodness in their food, coffee and staff. I love their cafe latte with extra espresso, butter chicken poutine (which btw won awards for best poutine in the city) and last, their banana chocolate loaf. Yum yum yum, gimme some! What an outstanding independent cafe in the heart of Vancouver's little India! The Victoria Arduino espresso machine was a big surprise and the high quality JJbean single origin we had in our french press couldn't have been better. I was super-stoked to see they also carry Eight-Fold-Eats gluten free (and vegan) baked goods. The place is big and bright, has wireless and comfortable seating and even a patio. We were served by the owners who we found to be genuine, down to earth and friendly. I know we'll be coming back again when we visit this very unique neighbourhood. read more

All set to be wowed. I ordered a Cappuccino and went to use the facilities. It was a disaster paper overflowing from the bin, no soap in the dispenser ! Paper coming off the roller ? The 2-star is just for the sauce of butter chicken fries. Overpriced, average taste and bad service. Just moved to this neighborhood and saw the reviews so decided to give this a try. Roots is only 2 mins walk from my place. Saw Free WiFi sign on the outside of the cafe. Went there at around 4:30 in the afternoon. There were quite a number of students there who were chatting pretty loud. Went in to order Butter Chicken Fries and Matcha Latte. Butter chicken fries tasted good with all the sauce and cheese but the chicken pieces were smaller than the size of my one tooth, and I only got a total of 6 tiny pieces. For a $10+ fries I expected a little more meat than that. The matcha latte looked green enough but all I could taste is the milk. No matcha flavor at all. But the worst of all is the rudeness of the cashier. As I was paying by card, the machine restarted itself half way so I decided to pay with cash instead. I paid $20 for my $15 something bill and the cashier gave me changes with toonies. I was going to give a 10% tip so I was looking through my coin purse for a loonie. Maybe the cashier thought I wasn't going to tip her and that's when she started acting rude. I went to sit at the corner of the cafe. I laid out my laptop and stuff and realized I needed the WiFi password. I looked around but didn't see it posted anywhere. So when I went to the counter for my latte I asked the cashier what their WiFi password is. She said it but I wasn't sure how it spells. She gave an impatient sigh and spelled me half of the password and then said 'you know it's the same password written outside the cafe.' and then she walked away. Hello?!? I have all my belongings out at my seat and there were a lot of other people in the cafe. But fine, I walked outside and look at every single spot on the window and door and NO PASSWORD POSTED. In the neighborhood there are tons of different food choices and with the price I was paying I could have gotten something better and tastier with much bigger and filling portion. And the refusal of a WiFi password wasn't allowing me to relax there and do some work while eating. Definitely NOT going back. read more

After coming a few times and it being closed - I aimed for midday and I was successful! I believe this location was briefly a Blenz Coffee and so I was surprised to see Roots here when I moved into the neighbourhood. I was happy there was something close by for my non-indocanadian self to indulge in. What does this non-indocanadian get? ... Butter Chicken Poutine. I made sure to ask about the hours, because they hadn't been posted outside. Yelp (and other websites) claimed Roots Cafe was "open late" and "open until 12am". Right now they're slow and closing at 8pm, though come September they'll be open until midnight some nights. read more

Of course I went for a jog beforehand so I wouldn't feel so guilty eating an entire bowl of greasy fries and butter sauce mid week. Service: 4/5 - Very friendly, greetings when you enter - Orders placed at the front and they call out the order when its ready for pickup - think coffee shop but with made to order food too Decor: 3/5 - I really liked the space, there are alot of small seats, tables for 2, a couch area in the middle for groups. Window-stool seating if you want to people watch. They also have seating outside - My only grudge was it was a little dirty. The floors are covered in dust and dirt and scraps. Food: 3/5 Butter chicken poutine - They've even won an award for it according to the certificate up front. - it has huge potential but it really should just be called butter sauce poutine. I was lucky to find 5 morsels of chicken the size of dice. The sauce is good, the cheese is soft and gooey. They add a dollop of sambal sauce, and its garnished with raw onion and parsley or cilantro - for almost 10$ more chicken is warranted. I also had an americano - it was good, The atmosphere is nice if you want to get some work done with a cup of coffee and a snack. We recently moved across from this cafe and we are pleasantly surprised! There was awhile there that I was addicted to their calzones...man they're good. The mocha was my go to drink from there for awhile. I probably gained 10 pounds just from drinking the mocha everyday for awhile there But now I am sweaaaaaring by their seasonal peppermint mocha. My whole household agrees it's better than Starbucks- my mouth is watering just thinking about it. It's REALLLLLLY sweet, so you have to have a sweet tooth, but if you like the Starbucks peppermint mocha you'll love this one. We've tried a couple of the poutines but the Butter Chicken poutine is my fave. Again, mouth watering just thinking about it kinda thing. Several times we've had breaky here too, the breakfast sandwich is worth it- and they even have a reaaaallly cheap "big breakfast", eggs sausage and toast, hashbrowns the whole bit. It is a little bland, but it's so cheap it's way better than a Tim Hortons breakfast and if you drown it in hot sauce and HP, you'll be happy. All in all it's a really cute cafe that essentially feels like a whole ass restaurant which means you don't technically have to be vaccinated and you can still enjoy a restaurant type experience. 10/10 recommend. read more

Extremely rude server ( the tall young Indian guy). Never coming back. Ive been here two times. The first time I loved the place for its message (local cafe with friendly comfy environment) and serving as a community meeting point etc. The staff were friendly and we ordered food and drinks and things were good. We spent some time working on our project and left planning on coming again. The second time was vastly different. We occupied the same corner seat as the last time, (we were three and had 3 laptops so pulled in an extra table). Suddenly the music on the sound system starts blaring really loud. Everyone in the place was disturbed and so I went up to counter and politely asked her to maybe see if they could turn the music down. She apologized but then 2 minutes later, the server ( tall thin young Indian guy) walks up to us and very rudely asked us to not use 2 tables. We were surprised since there were 6 empty tables in the cafe and no real rush. So we asked him what the issue was. And he says" anyway you guys come in every week and dont buy anything". this was baffling since this was only our second time there. We did buy things the first time and were planning on it this time too but of course after such treatment, theres no way we will ever set foot in the place again. There was another gentleman who had complained about the sound volume too but the server seemed to have picked us to bully because we were brown and an easier target in his mind. Totally unacceptable service. Cafes are in the business of being a third place to hang out (after work and home), meet, and buy drinks and food as you spend time there. The money comes from building a relationship. Not selectively mis treating customers on their second visit. Very unfortunate since I would much rather support a cafe like this over a starbucks. But with servers like this, I would prefer not to be yelled at for no reason and go somewhere else. read more

I had the classic poutine. It was okay. I don't think it was worth the $8 price tag. The cheese curds were chilled, the gravy a little bland, but the fries were good. They have a free dispenser of ice water but there were several flies around the cafe. I haven't tried their coffees, so I can't comment on those. Bottom line: it was okay. Just okay. We were drawn to roots because it looked clean, modern and friendly from the exterior and we had seen the coming and going of regulars and other customers. It looked like a friendly, popular place to go in our new neighbourhood so we thought'd we'd scope it out! We were not disappointed -- the staff were friendly, the food was great and the atmosphere was very comfortable. We had been mourning the loss of our usual cafe as a result of our move, but I think we've found a home at Roots. I ordered the $6.95 classic breakfast and it was tasty and hot, however, only the eggs were freshly made. They have quite an extensive menu but I am not sure they actually have a kitchen. The food I saw being made was all precooked with a restaurant oven used to complete the cooking. The man that took my order and money also put my breakfast together without wearing gloves. I had written a post a few days ago asking for a location to plug in my computer, have free wifi, decent coffee, and nibbles. The location wasn't terribly important. WOW, did you guys deliver. I received a few recommendations, but several had mentioned Roots, so I thought that it would be the place to start. After the 1hr+ commute on public transportation, I'm not disappointed (yet). I just arrived. Very clean, well kept place. Nice relaxing music...and SUGAR FREE/VEGAN/DELICIOUS TREATS!!!!!!! Not to mention a $5 breakfast w/ a great little side salad (instead of the standard hash and toast). The coffee is alright. But I can plug in my computer, have free fast wifi, and looks like I'll be able to just sit here all day, and it shouldn't be a problem. Y'all should come here without a doubt, no matter how far the commute. This is definitely going to be my new thesis hangout! Super friendly service, and the owner was surprised/pleased that the place had been yelped about and that people liked it! Definitely worth the commute! Hope to see you here sometime! I've walked by this place on more than one occasion, however, finally walked in over the weekend. I am semi frequently in and around little India for grocery, however, this has always skipped my radar even though it's shamefully right by the bus stop. I am glad that I finally walked in, long over due. The décor of the place is sleek, clean and modern. It is easily missable as it doesn't fit the rest of the feel of the traditional stores nearby. Outside the store front is a really warm and cute story about the café. You get a real sense of community from one generation to another. The owner was super friendly and patient. The best coffee house experience I have had in a long time. This café is close to my home and carries both gluten and sugar free treats. The combination of the two are hard to find. Finally a café that can specifically cater to my culinary needs. I tried the lavender chocolate sugar/gluten free bar. Just the right amount of lavender that complements the chocolate. A treat that felt guilt free in my mouth. This is just 29 blocks away from my favourite record store, perfect time to walk and savour my treats. The hot drinks are the usual suspects that came in a coffee shop with fair market prices. I will defiantly be back more than once as everyone seems to be raving about the butter chicken poutine. I was a regular at Roots Cafe when they were a franchised location of Bean Around the World and can I just say - they were great back then and they are FANTASTIC now! First of all, as someone that is trying to make healthier food choices, I so appreciate the variety of goods that Roots keeps in stock (and fresh!!) using ethically-sourced ingredients by local bakeries and food artisans. Sugar-free, gluten-free, dairy-free are all options that Roots not only offer, but embrace. It's not enough to have those options, but to make 'em taste great is their goal. All that being said, if you're looking for good old fashioned comfort food, they have that there too! My favourite is the butter chicken poutine! Picture perfectly-fried french fries, yummy cheese, butter chicken sauce, chunks of chicken, cilantro and their awesome chile sauce to give it an extra kick of heat. YUM. OH and they have those no-longer-available in Canada relics: Vanilla Coke and Cherry Coke. As for the service, I have nothing but love for all who work there. They know me by name, what sort of drinks and food I generally order, and even what classes I'm taking at Langara. The wifi is fast and there's always plenty of room to set up with your laptops or iPads. The people working will always change the music volume, or choice, and turn on the big screen tv if you're itching to watch that soccer or hockey game. Oh, and they're licensed. Bazinga!! The coffee is good and the cafe is spacious and relaxed, a perfect alternative to the library and Starbucks for studying. They have homemade goodies from fries, pastas, and sandwiches to smoothies and even beer. It's comfy and a nice getaway for a quick coffee and a cram session filled with impromptu meals and snacks. read more

OMG! The Curry Chicken Poutine here is absolutely amazing. I would travel all the way from DT for this dish, butter chicken, cheese curds and killer fries. I also had the Chicken buger with curry mayo and it was so, so good. Cooked fresh to order, this cafe is serving up some seriously premium fare. They became Roots Cafe in January 2012 and are slowly making changes. As of March, they have a full cafe menu, organic espresso, homemade chai, and are open until 8pm. However, they also have plans to get licensed and will then be open until midnight. They also have soy, rice milk, and almond milk for hot drinks. Last summer (while still a franchise BatW) they had gelato, which I hope they'll offer again. There is 1hr free street parking in the neighbourhood and it is a great location in Vancouver's Little India, right on the corner of Main Street and 49th Avenue. read more

This is a nice cafe to meet up with friends or study. There's no music playing in the background so you can actually hear your conversation. Also, cafe isn't too busy. I came here to meet up with a friend and ordered a XL chai tea latte in a mug ~$4.80. The mug was fairly large. The Chai tea latte wasn't very good (1 star). It tasted watery like they didn't steep enough chai for a long time. I would say their cafe/tea prices are slightly lower than say Starbucks. I think their other lattes look more promising so next time I come in I'll try that. read more
