The Acai Bowl is wonderful with humongous selection of toppings, mixes and base ingredients for a delicious Acai taste both sweet, crunchy and healthy in one bowl. Now it might seem you could just add everything, some flavors just don't agree and should not be mixed in some cases. Nevertheless, it is your choice, and it could be your favorites from childhood, or just a craving. YUM!! I've been to the roots & rye location in silverlake but this was my first time trying out this location! Definitely my new #1 go to spot for acai bowls. I got a small size ($7) which comes with unlimited bases, granola, and all the toppings you can think of. As someone who is incredibly indecisive when it comes to ordering I was a little overwhelmed seeing all the different base options but shoutout to the super friendly workers for assuring me that yes, i could get all of them LOL. The bases I chose were: Acai, Blue Majik (beautiful light blue base made of pinapple, mango, coconut & spirulina), Matcha, Pitaya (aka dragonfruit), Chia Pudding & Cherimoya (SO good but i think it was a seasonal option). Overall, I liked this place. A friend and I met up here to get bowls. Once I saw that they offered avocado toast, being the total basic that I am, I ordered that too. The bases for the bowls are okay, but I wouldn't say they're amazing. They taste fresh but are kind of bland. Definitely, if you are not a huge fan of added sugars, you'll probably appreciate the face that they aren't that sweet. The matcha base is super mild but still tastes like matcha powder, so even if you're not the biggest fan of strong matcha, this would probably be okay for you. Avocado Toast: I am always kind of baffled when places screw up avocado toast considering it's pretty easy to make. It's literally two main ingredients, typically with some salt and chili flakes on top. I make it at home all the time and it comes out fine. But this place was a total miss with theirs. First of all, the bread is not like a thick country bread-- it's pretty thin and therefore gets all soggy under the weight of the avocado. The avocado itself was brown :( Really disappointing that they felt comfortable sending this out, please see pics lol But, overall, I think it is 4 stars because their main menu item, the acai bowl, is pretty decent and they basically have endless toppings and ways to customize your bowl, which is awesome. I've always craved acai bowls randomly in the past but never really put in the effort to find a good one nearby. I asked a friend recently and she recommended me to Roots & Rye so I looked up their locations and found that there was a new one located in Pasadena on Del Mar. There is also a second location in Pasadena that is on Colorado. The Del Mar location is closest to me so I started my online order. The ordering process is very easy: choose a size, base(s), various toppings (fruits, dried fruits, seeds, etc.) and sauces (honey/agave/peanut or almond butter, etc.). The customer service is extremely friendly and welcoming, even if I just go in to tell my name and pick up my order. They make you feel super welcomed so it's a nice start to my day or a nice pick me up. :) I really like how they don't charge ANYTHING EXTRA for additional toppings. Not like some places where they only allow you to choose up to 3 or 5. This place essentially lets you choose anything and possibly everything you'd like. You could choose every single base, topping and sauce if your heart desires!!! But the lid would probably be hard to close... :3 I really can't think of anything negative to say! I usually get the medium size to share with my boyfriend. It's $9 and no tax I believe, but don't quote me on that. I usually buy acai bowls 2-3 times a week at this store on Del Mar and Lake Ave. There are not as many choices as Vital Cane but the quality is ok. I order the same items every time and the size of the bowl varies day by day. Weekend is bigger and weekday especially on Tuesday is smaller. It really depends on the server. Sometimes, there is no line but the server is in a rush. I requested banana and strawberry as toppings and ended up having only 1 chopped strawberry and 1/3 banana and the base given was so little. I hope the size of the bowl can be more consistent. Very fresh and I was completely satiated and satisfied. It's located next to Real Food Daily, free 90 minute parking open lot behind it. And, toppings are unlimited too, unlike so many other places that charge per topping or charge after a certain number of toppings. They dont have that many options to chose from(fruit wise) but toppings they have many options. Only fruit option was Strawberry, banana and blueberry. Which i'm fine with. This place has gone down in quality since it first opened a couple years ago. I remember when it first opened the workers were extremely engaged, the acai and smoothies were decently priced, and the product was always something I was excited to eat. But I went in for a smoothie just a few days ago, the workers felt exhausted, tired, and the smoothie I got was watery, tasteless, and had the wrong ingredients. It was overall a pretty low quality experience. And the prices went up from $8 to $10 dollars. I have 2 different experiences, online ordering and store walk-in. I first ordered online because I saw their sign outside, "$2 off" for those who order for their first time on their website. The process was simple and I just followed each question, chose my desired toppings, and got this about 8 minutes after (there was a small line out the door during the time). After receiving the bowl, there seemed to be less toppings than you'd usually get if you were to do walk-in. I noticed only few pieces of literally all the toppings I chose. Their lid is flat and doesn't give enough space because the bowl is already stuffed to the top with acai. If you don't care for toppings, I'd say get this option. You'll save $2 and time going inside. HOWEVER, if you're like me and believe your toppings make the bowl, then order inside. They make your bowls SO much prettier and presentable, and you could even ask for extra toppings if it doesn't seem like enough the first time! read more
