Acai Bowl
Ria P.

Roots and rye may be like my new recent obsession. I fear I have gone so much that the guy on Lake just says extra granola right before I even say it and walk in. Anyways it's so so good. I could probably eat this everyday and not get tired of it. The overnight oats, acai, and granola are all just so yummy and it genuinely is the best acai bar with unlimited toppings!

My daughter recommended this place to me. She had açaí bowls with her friend. It's my first time. I ordered a small açaí bowl. The base I chose was overnight oats, young coconut, strawberries, and blueberries. For toppings, I had pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, dried cranberries, and cinnamon. The açaí bowl tastes so good and filling. That was my quick lunch and got energized. The service was prompt and easy.

I went to Roots & Rye yesterday. I got a small acai bowl. The base for my acai bowl included pitaya. The toppings for my acai bowl included a mix of berries, nuts, overnight oats, granola, seeds, beeswax, honey, and peanut butter. I was highly satified with the bowl I had. Every ingredient looked great. I didn't much enjoy the flavor or texture of the overnight oats and the beeswax.

Pretty solid acai spot. I love how customizable the bowls are. Picking and chooses from a plethora of toppings is always great. That way, you can get exactly what you want. There's an abundance of delicious, diverse toppings, which is what makes Roots & Rye stand out. I'm knocking off a star due to the quality of the ingredients. The acai is the frozen, sherbert-like ice-cream type. Not my preference when it comes to acai. And the bananas and strawberries were a little underripe. Still tasty! And I loved being able to add protein powder, peanut butter, and cacao nibs on top. So this is a good, quick acai bowl stop if you're looking for swift service, and customizabilty.

The acai bowls here are so refreshing, and I love all the options. I got a small and you can mix and match the bases. I got Blue Majik, Acai, and chia pudding as the bases. The fruits offered are bananas, strawberries, and blueberries. They also have a good selection of granolas, nut butters, etc to choose from. This is a small shop, definitely a place to pick up your order.

I've had roots & rye plenty of times and they never disappoint! Their acai bowls and smoothies are customizable. The fruits and veggies taste fresh. I typically order the acai smoothie and acai bowl. I like how they offer unlimited toppings and add ons. The store was clean and service was friendly!

My friend introduced me to this spot and no other açaí place can't compare for me. My go to combo for the base is chia pudding and açaí. Top it with blueberries, strawberries, and bananas. This is a straightforward shop. Order and enjoy your açaí outside in the sun. Service is met with a smile and efficiency. Another great combo

I recently have discovered how much I love Acai bowls! So I was excited to try a new spot in Pasadena when I was in the area. Parking here was difficult, this location is located in central Pasadena (near Lake) and every time I am in this area it gives me such high stress and anxiety because the drivers here seemed to be impatient and reckless as they drive in the city. The parking lot behind the row of businesses were packed. This was on a Friday night around 7pm. After 10 mins of circling the area, we finally found a spot. Once we got in, I wondered if they were open. It was dimly lit and really quiet inside. It looked like a ghost town, where there was no one in sight. Maybe I came during an off-peak time? The worker sitting in the way back saw us and came over and helped us with our order. This process was fast and I appreciated that, it was nicely packed with all the toppings and I was excited to try it out! I wished there were more options for fruits; there were only strawberries, bananas, and blueberries (maybe by the time I was there all the other ones were sold out?) My base had the matcha, acai, and chia pudding. I love matcha and this matcha felt like it punched me in the face to let me know they were invited to the party and acai and chia pudding were just there as decoration. I wished there was a better balance between the flavors (maybe I should've asked to try a sample) but not the stores fault. Now I know to probably stick to just the acai base. It was good but it didn't wow me, I don't think I'll go out of the way to come here but if I am by chance then I wouldn't mind stopping in

All I have to say is this place sets my bar high for acai bowls bc everything on it is so fresh and the portions are so generous. Like each small bowl is barely $10 for unlimited toppings. None of that $1 for each extra topping!

Blue majik
Amy L.

Small açaí shop on lake. I like their blue majik flavor (coconut, mango, pineapple, and blue algae(?)) because the texture is smoother than the açaí (which gets kinda icy). Blue majik does melt faster though, fyi. Unlimited toppings. Small bench in front of the store to sit at and people/traffic watch while you eat :)

Miranda C.

A solid acai bowl place. Classic base and topping options. They scoop and get your bowl out to you pretty quickly. I wish there were some tables inside or outside to sit and enjoy the bowl.

Melissa P.

Love the build it yourselves concept, unlimited toppings too! Overall, love how generous they are l with the base and toppings. Service here is super friendly and helpful. Ambiance is no frills and to the point. Ordered two medium bowls online totaling $27.98, and appreciated how they kept it in the freezer until I came by to pick up. The cacao nibs were super good!!

They are located in Mills Alley in Pasadena just look for the bright red sign and signage promoting some flavors. We came by after having dinner. The staff greeted us as we walked in. It was empty when we initially arrived then more customers filtered in shortly after. Staff allowed to sample their unique flavor options. **To note, they offer a few vegan flavors for those with dietary restrictions**. Always a huge plus and positive! The flavors are middle eastern inspired and the details are all listed. My wife and I sampled 2 flavors and we both enjoyed our selections. The flavors are memorable. We happily decided on the Sesame Halve (vegan) & Pistachio Konafa with Chocolate Shell (+$1.00) for myself. The presentation is one of a kind! The topping with the tiny little rose is a nice aesthetic and definitely their trademark. The location offers retro and colorful style seating for 10+ customers if I had to guess . Patio seats are also offered outside. Also, OG Pac-Man arcades are available inside. My wife loved her Sesame Halva and my Pistachio Konafa with Chocolate Shell totally reminded me of a Dubai Chocolate type of vibe with each bite! The whole first time visit was positive and would make me want to come by again to try something else! Presentation on point! Flavors on point! Vibes good! Tummies happy! Come by and just try! When we arrived, we were the only two there for a few minutes until more people came. We were greeted right away. We walked down a ramp that led us to their selections. It's a decent-sized shop with a few tables. Each table had a rose in a vase attached via velcro so you don't have to worry about tipping them over. The shop is also nicely decorated with wall art. It's been a few days since then and we can't stop thinking about coming back. They serve unique Middle-Eastern flavored ice cream. I ordered the Sesame Halva which is their vegan ice cream made of Halva ice cream with sesame & coconut. OMG, I've never tasted anything like this before. I love anything that has a sesame profile. If you like that nutty, sweet, and earthy flavor this one is for you. I could taste the coconut, but it wasn't overpowering. There were also little chunks of halva in there that added a slight bit of sweetness. The texture was similar to cookie dough, but softer. Aside from the taste, I loved the simple presentation of the small rose on top of the scoop. It made it look elegant. As you can tell, I am definitely coming back and highly recommend stopping by.

The Arabic coffee flavored ice cream was a 10/10, and the seasonal lemon pound cake flavor was also incredible. The Jacksons... You win free ice cream on me if you recognize the pattern. Yes, that's right: these are all siblings who have seamlessly worked together in their respective fields. I raise the list to include Mia and Mark Pedersen - the brother and sister team behind the ice creamery Moo Moo Mia with locations in both Montrose and Monrovia. You won't find Mia and Mark bickering or partaking in sibling rivalry; but you WILL find them creating quality, home made ice cream for Angelinos. Mark and Mia made their way from Denmark to Los Angeles in 2009 initially working in a Danish franchise despite both having a background in ice cream-making. When Covid hit in 2020 with its path of destruction to so many businesses; Mark and Mia decided they should cut their losses and create their own company that they can rely on their decision-making and thus Moo Moo Mia was born. Moo Moo Mia strives to produce Grade-A ice cream using crème de la crème ingredients such as milk from Scott Brother Dairy cows (another sibling company where cows roam free on 900 acres and are hormone free producing sensational milk) and offer unique flavor combinations. After a recent poor gelato experience at another LA business; my boyfriend and I decided to reward ourselves with ice cream from Moo Moo Mia on Honolulu in Montrose (this was our second time at this location). Nestled in the charming central Montrose corridor; Moo Moo Mia welcomes with a pastel color wheel façade/signage and a small square footage ice cream shop. When I say 'small'; I genuinely mean small as Moo Moo Mia is tiny with a display case/order counter and a claustrophobic standing room space with a few loose tables outside. This is definitely an "order and get out" establishment. Due to this congestion, Moo Moo Mia felt a bit hectic on both of our visits which always makes one feel guilty to ask for samples in order to not hold up the line. The flavor options at Moo Moo Mia aren't super extensive (there isn't that much to choose from) BUT there do have those unique combinations Mia and Mark boast of with pride. I have sampled a few flavors at Moo Moo Mia such as Honey Lavender (Sweet cream ice cream layered with delicate ribbons of lavender and finished with a touch of raw organic honey - so good with perfect lavender notes!), March flavor of ice cream with Luck Charms marshmallows and Sweet Taro. On our second visit, my boyfriend kept it simple with a single cone ($5.50) of Madagascar Vanilla Bean (Made with imported ground Madagascar vanilla beans) and a kid's cup ($4.25) of March's monthly flavor Coconut Ube for me. Mark and Mia aren't exaggerating about Moo Moo Mia's ice cream as it truly is quite good: creamy, thick and not overly sweet; the texture is perfection. The Honey Lavender holds my heart but the Coconut Ube was also delicious although it tasted of 95% ube with a small 5% after taste of coconut water. Good thing I like Ube! My boyfriend's vanilla was, in his words, "The best vanilla!" and I agree that Moo Moo Mia truly elevates a basic flavor making it extra special. The consensus is that the ice cream is wonderful, no doubt. The customer service at Moo Moo Mia leaves a lot to be desired, however. During both visits the associates were very dry, somewhat curt - although not rude, per se - and are literally only there to get the job done and that's it. Even though this isn't too terrible; it prevents Moo Moo Mia from being a perfect experience. Moo Moo Mia is a delicious and quality option for an ice cream treat that you can truly taste but the lack of numerous flavor options, the teen-tiny shop and the customer service are flaws that keep it from being exceptional. Despite this, Moo Moo Mia is recommended for all ice cream lovers - whether you have a sibling or not!
