This is our first time at this location. Easy parking. Open and airy store, nicely decorated. Steve, the owner, is an Ebike enthusiast and answered all our questions. We've been looking for a while and we were happy to find a place we could test drive a good inventory. These Shaka bikes are very impressive. The price point is very good. DO NOT BUY THESE BAGS! LOCKS DON'T WORK! I purchased two pieces of TravelPro Max-LiteAir luggage from the Rooten's Travel Center, at 17775 Main Street, Irvine, CA phone 949-250-0774, on 05/21/2022. I used one larger of the two; ML Air H/S large Exp Spinner over the course of a trip on June 28 to July 13th. Upon reaching the final night before I was to fly home to LAX, I was unable to open the suitcase. My lock combination no longer worked. I spent several hours studying the TravelPro and Max-LiteAir site for help in resetting my lock, as well as watching numerous You Tube videos on resetting the lock; without success! I never was able to open my luggage at the conclusion of the trip. After returning home on July 13th, I assumed I would be able to take my luggage to the Rooten's Travel Center the next day and they would be able to assist me in resetting my lock. Much to my surprise the staff at Rooten's Travel Center were unable, or unwilling, to assist me on July 14th. They said I would need to take it to an airport! and have TSA unlock the case. This is what I eventually did and TSA was able to unlock my case. Now home, I have followed the luggage's included flyer on how to reset the lock, attempted to lock and unlock the smaller of the cases. Guess What? I am now unable to unlock my smaller case. Since I have had the new luggage for over their 2-week limited warrantee I am unable to get a refund on these cases from Rooten's Travel Center. I hope any future purchasers of luggage from Rooten's Travel Center, Irvine, Calif, or Max-Lite Air products, will have more success at customer service than I did. read more

I needed to get repairs on a Victorinox suitcase that I had purchased at Rooten's in Irvine several years ago. When I arrived, the sales associate informed that the store no longer sent luggage out for repairs unless it was Briggs and Riley. She gave the name of business "in Santa Ana" that does repairs, but when I asked for the address or phone number of that business, she said I could look it up. Not a ringing endorsement for customer service at such a high-end luggage store. Over the years, I have purchased at least six Tumi or Victorinox suitcases and briefcases from this store. I was looking for a present for my girlfriend and since she was planning to do some traveling in the near future I thought I'd try to get her a decent suitcase to carry her luggage around in. I do a LOT of research (entirely too much) before buying anything, especially gifts, so I researched brands and prices for almost a week before buying. Since this is a brick and mortar location I worried the prices here would be much higher than what you find online. The staff was very friendly and helpful too, so I wanted to give them my business. That being said there have been times where I've found an item online for significantly cheaper than at the store, and no matter how nice the people I can't justify the price difference. (I'm unfortunately nowhere near rich) So I compared prices and shopped brands and found that Rooten's is actually very competitive in their pricing, even in these days of amazon and zappos. I indeed tried very hard to see if there were better prices online but in the case of the suitcases I ended up buying, Rooten's was actually cheaper, and I didn't have to wait for it to ship! (I almost couldn't believe it) I spoke with Steve the owner, and he told me he likes to make sure they stay competitive because he knows how the competition and our current economy are. He even gave me a small additional discount on the piece I bought, making for even better savings than I was anticipating. He helped carry the suitcases to my car, thanked me for my business and asked me to put out the word for him, which considering my customer service experience I was more than glad to do. I think a website might help attract more local customers or let people know where they are as this location is in a sort of low traffic business plaza right next to John Wayne Airport. TLDR : Polite, friendly staff, very competitive prices and good selection. On one final note, I mentioned to Steve I was looking at Tumi and Rimowa but just couldn't afford it. Instead of telling me how great they are or trying to convince me to upgrade he said "These are great items and the quality is already so good you don't need to spend that much money. I would have tried to talk you out of it if you did." I felt better about my purchase, I didn't feel pressured to spend more, and I felt like I wanted to give them more business in the future. Isn't that what it's all about? I can't speak for anyone else's experiences, and working in customer service myself I know sometimes it's possible to try your best and still just have a customer who is unhappy with you, either through your own fault, or some misunderstanding with the customer. my personal experience with Rooten's luggage center however was very positive, and I hope yours will be too. read more

I met Steve Rooten yesterday, and ended up buying a Travelpro Platinum Elite carry-on spinner bag from him. It wasn't the cheapest price out there, but certainly wasn't the highest. What I really liked about the experience was that Steve lined up 3 different levels of similar bags: good, better, best. He went through each tier and explained the differences and in what circumstances one bag might be better than another. There was no pressure, he was happy to sell any of them to me. I was glad to support a local, long-standing business while also getting so much valuable information back. Rooten's is my absolute "go-to" store for luggage and business cases. The inventory is spectacular, and the sales staff is consistently knowledgeable and pleasant. One of many perks you will receive as a Rooten's customer is the way the staff backs up the quality of the merchandise. If you purchase from the right manufacturer (for me that is Briggs & Riley), the quality is effectively guaranteed for life. When I bring in a bag requiring repair, staff has offered me a loaner bag, and always made sure that my repairs took place on a reasonable timeline. Last time I went to Rooten's to pick up a repaired bag, Andy and Beth were fantastic, a credit to the store. The store costs a little more than others. Know why? It's worth it. read more

We're big fans of Rooten's, as can be verified by the amount of luggage in our house! However we were recently very disappointed at the attitude of the sales guy who "banned" my wife from shopping there as she had done too many returns! I honestly understand how frustrating returns can be, but I think that's kinda the requirement of any business these days? Since we've spent and still own close to $2K of luggage, and we have referred many of our friends from overseas I think the long term view and value of a Customer outweighs the inconvenience of returns. I don't know who wrote the previous reviews of this place and maybe it was once great but they stopped carrying all luggage but Briggs and Riley which is super expensive. They neglected to inform me of that when I called so I wasted hours driving there and back only to get treated in the most condescending way because I did not want to spend $2,000.00 for luggage. I really prefer to shop local but this place is the worst example of that. Sad. read more

I'm glad a couple other reviewers have mentioned the anger management issues at this store. I bought and then returned a Haliburton case for work - we ended up not needing it (it was a client gift we didn't end up giving the client). Rooten's policy was that it was completely returnable, and the store did refund my money. But, two hours after I made the return, the store manager called to yell at me. Apparently he thought we used the case on a shoot (we didn't, and I returned it unused/pristine within a day). I just kind of had to laugh as he screamed that I can never shop at Rooten's again. No problem there! In the time since, I've bought 3 travel bags and now my husband is getting luggage for Christmas - which I will buy online or Bags n Baggage. I'd be surprised if Rooten has many repeat customers. BTW, the sales associate at Bags n Baggage was very helpful in assisting me with a rollerboard - he actually convinced me to buy a less expensive (but more durable) bag and 2 years later I still LOVE that suitcase. Their selection sometimes isn't as complete as I would want but they are worth checking out. Unless you want to be berated and abused. In that case, head to Rootens. *My comment to management's comment on my review: It was late in 2008 when the incident occurred (I just thought to add this review as I was looking for where to purchase a Christmas gift) and I'm glad to hear there has been a change in management. My wife and I travel extensively throughout the world, using all modes of transportation, particularly trains. Therefore, our luggage needs to be as compact as possible. We agree with other posters that if you are looking for a "One-Stop" Travel store, Rootens is the place to go. Until we found Rootens, we purchased all of our travel supplies on-line. After our last big trip overseas, we needed to replace our luggage and much of our gear. We were frustrated because not one on-line travel site had every thing we needed. We Googled "travel store orange county california" and up popped Rootens as a white page listing. There is no website though. We believe that would significantly help bring in business. Once we found the place near JWA, we were amazed at the selection. The owner, Steve Rooten, has clearly done his reserch. He has everything you need; middle to high end luggage, packing managment systems, travel supplies and clothing, etc. We had also done our research before we went to the store. Naturally we were concerned that a brick and mortar business would cost more, but were very pleased. The prices are very competitive and of course, you don't have to pay shipping. Very important for us is that we can walk around the store and visualize everything we needed. Steve and his staff are extremely knowledgable about travel needs. They LISTEN and help direct you but don't push you. We bought a complete set of four pieces of Victorinox luggage and took them on a short five day trip. Sadly, they didn't work for us but it was past the 30 day return policy. Steve graciously gave us a 30% store credit for the returned luggage and we purchased new Rimowa. We are looking forward to using the new Rimowa on our next month long European cruise/train trip. Rootens also runs travel seminars that are excellent sources of information. We have picked up great tips such as using Eagle Creek Packing Cubes, which Rootens carries. These cubes cut packing and especially repacking down by at least half. They are particularly handy when going from hotel to hotel on a tour. We used them on our last trip and found them very helpful. If there is any take-away from this review, Rootens is at the very least competitive with on-line sites and can be cheaper with Steve's frequent in-store discounts. Hadnt been to Rootens in many years but recently went to buy new luggage. The woman that helped us was so knowledgeable, professional and patient and showed us some really cool features that the luggage we ended up buying, had. We loved the special edition color of the Briggs and Riley and Steve assisted us with our purchase as one piece was in stock and the other size was awaiting arrival. Rootens was the only place that still had the special edition plum color for purchase while even the Briggs and Riley site was showing "sold out". This transaction was quick and easy and smooth and we cannot recommend Rootens enough for any sort of travel related purchases, as well as general purchases as their store has a vast array of items for sale...including bikes. read more

Great service!! I went in the first time to have them ship my Briggs and Riley bag in for repairs. They spent a lot of time going over the bag and noting every instance of damage. The bag came back perfectly repaired, and the whole process couldn't have been smoother. A few weeks later, I called them asking for advice on how to get stains out of a piece of silver Briggs and Riley luggage. The staff gave me an excellent suggestion and for the first time in years my bag is looking brand new. The Short Version: Bad attitudes, condescending behavior, and a near-immediate attempt to up-sell me something far more expensive. The Long Version: I came into Rooten's Luggage Center because I live in the corner of Costa Mesa that's right by the border of Irvine and Santa Ana and because the Yelp reviews for Rooten's are somehow magically good. I brought in my large rolling suitcase, the fake-leather handle on top of it having been broken off due to rough handling by luggage handlers at the airport, to have the handle repaired. If I'd just come in and received a "sorry, we can't repair that brand," I'd have been mildly annoyed but not enough to write about it. Instead, what I got was one of the employees (didn't bother looking at names, a mistake in retrospect) telling me that the brand I had wasn't a good brand (it was part of a set my wife and I were given as a gift from a store that sells a variety of home goods) and that we were throwing away good money if we wanted to bother having it repaired. This was after the guy up front had barely glanced at it for 2 seconds. At this point, I was told that they only repair luxury brands in the store and that everything sold in store comes under warranty. I was informed that I could get a $50 trade-in "deal" if I bought a new rolling suitcase and ditched the old one. Said suitcases STARTED at $200 (before discount). I was also told that I could take my suitcase to a shoe repair show and throw my money away there if I really wanted my suitcase repaired. The price the folks at Rooten's told me is actually more than the upper range I was later quoted by this same shoe repair shop. Really, what it came down to wasn't that they couldn't/wouldn't repair my suitcase. What bothered me was the attitude that the brand of suitcase I owned was junk and I was wasting their time and sullying their store by having brought it in to get it fixed. Combine that attitude with an attempt to get me to shell out AT LEAST $150 on a new suitcase within seconds of looking at my current one, and you know exactly why I left the store barely able to keep a civil tongue. This store gets a 1 star rating, mostly because there isn't a zero star rating. When the day eventually comes that I'm looking to replace my suitcase(s) (hopefully with a more sturdy brand), you can bet that Rooten's Luggage Center won't be where I'm shopping. read more

Old-fashioned customer service + high-quality products = Rooten's Luggage. I am so impressed with how well the sales staff at Rooten's took care of me. I lost my luggage on the airline. I visited Rooten's on a recommendation from a friend and am so glad I did. They have a large selection. The sales staff, Mike, Shouri (sp?), & Steve, walked me through the benefits and comparisons of different types of luggage. They were not pushy and even stayed after hours to help me. They took the time to educate me about various options available as well. While I live in Michigan and travel to southern California monthly, I would rather work with this team than any other. Their service is exceptional. I walked out feeling l had been helped. I walked out grateful. They offer a broad selection in price and quality. They also have many traveling accessories and some clothing too. If you are a weary traveler needing quality luggage and accessories, are pressed for time, and need a little TLC to help you through hard trip, this is the place to go. I highly recommend them. Great selection of luggage, backpacks, and other travel necessities. We actually came in to get a couple of our personal purses/briefcases fixed, and the gentleman who helped us was awesome. Fixed my husband's briefcase, but gave him the card of a place that will fix the problem permanently. They had lots of luggage to choose from, and many price ranges. And they have garment bags! I needed that information back in the fall for a wedding haha But now I know so next time I need a garment bag, I know where to go. read more

I was looking to replace a Rimowa suitcase that my mum "borrowed" and never returned. The new collection is so much more expensive and had colors that I didn't like. So I've been looking for a store that still had stock of the older version. I called to ask about it and lucky for me, Rootens had two of the exact suitcase I was looking for. I got there a few hours later, the suitcase was behind the counter ready for me with a little discount for getting the older model (since the new ones were arriving soon). This is like a Travel Department store! They have expanded and now carry clothes as well as luggage, purses and accessories. The staff is so knowledgeable that it is a pleasure to do business. They point out things I would not have thought of. Rooten's carries the largest assortment of luggage with features I never did see after extensive online research. Sign up for their sales! I just used my 20% discount on two suitcases, a purse, pants & a top (both of which did not wrinkle after being rolled up in a gym bag) and several leather luggage tags. (These replaced rubber straps on cheaper tags that came off the suitcase in my closet ) When I had to return a suitcase because it was too deep, the salesman took a measuring tape to help me find the right size to replace it. Visited Rooten's today...coming all the way from Rhode Island! I have heard from many of my L.A. area friends that this is the place to feed my luggage obsession. I must say, I did enjoy my visit to a brick-and-mortar store, where I could touch and feel and roll around the Rimowas and Tumis, rather than squinting at pictures online. The staff were very friendly and helpful. (Owner was quiet ; ) They have a great selection of luggage, at all price points. When does the expandable zipper on that Briggs & Riley decide to crap out? Sunday at 1:00 pm when you're leaving for NY at 6:00 am the next day. I called Rooten's where I originally purchased the piece and had the good fortune to get Andy Ma on the phone. When I explained what happened, he told me he could accommodate me with a similar loaner. I flew down the 405 from long beach and got there in 20 minutes flat. Andy was ready to help when I arrived with two similar loaner option to choose from while mine was being repaired. Wow! Icing the cake.... Absolutely amazing people. Hands down, one of the BEST customer service experiences I have ever had. I went in to find a new roll-aboard garment bag and after a ton of conversation with an amazing sales associate, I bought one. After a single use, I realized it was the wrong choice for me. I called the store and spoke with the Owner. I believe he is the second or third generation family owner, and he was unbelievably helpful. He didn't have to, but he took back my used back and replaced it with a new bag that I am absolutely in love with. The experience was so incredible - I will use them for any of my luggage needs from here on out. My old roller bad was finally giving out and remembered Rooten's. I bought a luggage do tag 7 years ago. I wanted a Ricardo like I had. The sales person said they did not have one but went to a big bearded guy who said he had two cases like mine and took me over and showed both.
