A Tale of Two Visits - and the Last One We'll Ever Make We had an amazing experience at Root Down in Denver Airport just last week--great food, fantastic service from Tyler, and an all-around solid spot for a pre-flight meal. Fast forward to today, and it was like stepping into a completely different restaurant. Our first server was curt and dismissive, ensuring that every table around us got their food and drinks while we sat waiting. A simple tea took over 30 minutes and multiple reminders--only to be blatantly ignored. Eventually, another server took over, but the service barely improved. It was clear that our experience was an afterthought. To top it all off, as we walked out, we literally heard them talking about us. For what? Expecting basic service? We were never rude, just disappointed. We left a minimum 20% tip to make sure it went to the second server, but frankly, the whole experience was a joke. Root Down just guaranteed we'll never return. Really good place inside the Denver Airport. The coffee was way better than I expected. The breakfast sandwich was legit. I would say not as good as Bunk or Lardo in pdx, but still really good. Good airport food? Impossible! That's what I thought when I looked this place up on Yelp. I've had some fairly mid airport in my time, so I don't necessarily associate airport food with good quality. Root Down changed my mind. Located in Terminal C of the Denver International Airport, they have a lot of gluten-free options. They even have a living wall, which made the place feel a lot more relaxing. I ordered the GF buttermilk pancakes, which hit the spot. I liked the creaminess of the huckleberry Devonshire, and the pancakes themselves were fairly fluffy and sweet. They did get dry, as pancakes do, but it was nothing a little syrup couldn't fix. They also weren't very heavy; there are times when I eat pancakes and they just make me feel super tired. These weren't one of those. This little restaurant has a full craft cocktail bar and is located smack in the middle of the C terminal at Denver International Airport. I was surprised to see a Paper Plane on the menu, but how fitting for an airport restaurant! Rhe cocktails do take time so PSA: only order if you're not in a hurry. The Paper Plane pairs nicely with sweet potato fries if you want a light bite with your cocktail. The ramen was just okay. The noodles were a little soggy and the shoyu egg lacked flavor. The hostess told us 20 minutes and we probably only waited 15 minutes. My husband ordered the Cheese Burger, while I had the Farm to Table Cobb Salad. The Cheese Burger came on a neat pretzel bun. It was literally a pretzel, haha. And, it was accompanied with sweet potato fries, ketchup and a very unique mustard. We tasted curry in it. My husband loved the new take on the classic condiment, as well as, the burger. Stating, "Hey, that was pretty good." Meanwhile, my Farm to Table Cobb Salad was HUGE and SO FILLING. I could only eat half of it. It had great toppings: golden beets, tomatoes, hard boil egg, blue cheese, bacon, avocado and dates. The lettuce was tossed in a creamy ranch goddess dressing. I have a 3.5-hour layover at DEN today on my way to Santa Barbara for work. A few people plus a friend I randomly saw on my DTW to DEN flight all recommended Root Down for food, so I checked it out today. I scoped out the menu beforehand and knew I wanted the banh mi turkey sandwich ... And it was delicious. A bit pricey, at $17.50, but if you go to the quickserve places at this airport everything is about $11+ anyways. I didn't order a cocktail because I'm traveling for work but their cocktail list looked really good too. Had a few hours layover in Denver and this was a perfect spot to sit and have brunch! I got seated at a single-person table with enough room to fit my carry-on luggage under the table. My server, Natasha, was sweet and attentive. The vegan take on pozole was delicious and the serving size is decent for one person, it is pretty filling. I decided to indulge in a breakfast burrito too. I got the one with chorizo, but they do have a vegan version of it as well. It was a good sized burrito and was well filled. Service was quick and friendly and they kept the soda and water refills coming. I enjoyed a large and flavorful salad that I was easily able to add grilled chicken too. Pricing is high (with tip , this was over $60 for 2 for lunch, no alcohol) but I feel like that's to be expected at an airport restaurant. 100% recommend. The beet salad with salmon had just too much vinaigrette that it over powered everything. Luckily, I took the salmon off and that was pretty good. The French fries I got as a side was not very crispy and kind of soggy. I came back on my way back from my destination flight as Denver is my connecting hub and tried the ramen. The staff was great, the wait-time was short (with quick-service) and the food flavors were excellent. I tried the Colorado Lamb Sliders and Jalapeño Cornbread and they were both extremely tasty. But be advised: There can be a wait! This restaurant is busy. We waited about 30 minutes for a table. So if you're in a hurry, you might want to skip Root Down. But if you have a couple of hours to kill before your next flight, then you should definitely visit. When I travel, I just want nourishing foods like salad. Root Down has a great house salad. It comes with arugula and romaine lettuces, grape tomatoes, pickled red onion, watermelon radish and pepitas. It's tossed in ranch typically, but I asked for the dressing on the side. They offer their salads whole or in half portions. I got the half house salad with a small bowl of posole. Yes, they have pozole here, and it's great! So brothy and warm, with lots of hominy. There is a kids menu here at Root Down. My kids for the almond butter pancakes with a side of sweet potato fries (a confusing and carby combination, but OK), and the mac and cheese with fries. The mac and cheese is your typical elbow macaroni with white cheddar cheese sauce. My kids both loved their meals. They have a large local beer menu, with lots of local draft beers. I got a glass of the 4 Noses IPA, out of Broomfield, and it was very good. Also: When you visit Root Down, be prepared to have the Beastie Boys song in your head the whole time. read more
