Friday night's dining adventure this week took us to Roost which is located on the ground floor of the Crescendo Lofts on Niagara Street. Parking is extremely limited. There is a tiny lot at the south end of the building but I doubt it could hold a dozen cars. Construction of a bike lane along Niagara Street has eliminated street parking in front of the building. I was able to park diagonally across the street. Getting in to Roost was the next challenge. There is a door directly on the center front of the building with a rooster on it. When you approach it you find a sign directing you to use the other door. The only other door visible is to the right at the far end of the restaurant. Nope, that's not the entrance either. Thankfully the rain had stopped. To eliminate the chance that we are just inept another gentleman went to the same two doors we did trying to get in. Finally the hostess observed our confusion through the window and directed us to the far left end of the building, where on the side of the building were two doors that looked like a service entrance, one actually saying "Electrical Room." I'm not sure how we were to assume this is the entrance. Once inside everything immediately changed for the better. The decor is quite fun in appearance. There is a large bar with the kitchen area behind it. The kitchen staff can be seen preparing all of the dishes. You are greeted by a very large rooster by the hostess stand. The hostess immediately greeted us. We were seated at a high rise table next to a window overlooking the thruway, railroad tracks and sewage plant. Not the best view but fortunately we were there for the food not the view. I believe there were only two tables with such a view. Apparently we were just lucky tonight. Our server quickly arrived for our beverage orders and made sure we had no questions about the menu. Throughout the evening her and another server insured our needs were always addressed. They were both very friendly too. Don't let the menu deter you from trying Roost. In my opinion the fare here is not what you can find on many other cookie cutter menus. We like to try different things and weren't disappointed here. We started out with a garden salad to share. It was so big we could have shared it with another couple. It was quite delicious too. I can't remember the last time I seen Green Goddess dressing on a menu. The dressing and everything on the salad complemented each other and came together wonderfully. We also ordered the Asparagus Toast. I have never seen such an appetizer before. There was a fried egg on it with a runny yoke. This was an amazing taste combination. For our main courses my wife chose the blackened snapper and I chose the salmon. I know I said that the menu contains items not found on most menus. Snapper and salmon while found on other menus are not prepared and presented like they are at Roost. Each dish appeared to have been carefully sculpted and paired with unexpected items that complemented their flavor. We both thoroughly enjoyed our entrees and found them to be quite delicious. Me a bit too much as I had no leftovers. I definitely recommend getting past the parking issue and taking a short walk if necessary and not to use what appears to be the entrance and to enter through the side of the building. I was visiting Buffalo for the weekend and decided on Roost for a Saturday morning brunch spot after reading all the great reviews. It definitely did not disappoint! The interior is decorated like a cross between a rustic, southern cafe and hipster coffee shop. We loved the decor! My only disappointment was that the brunch menu has more lunch than breakfast options. However, we were able to find two awesome breakfast-y items - the breakfast pizza and Johnny cakes. We've been to Roost for brunch a couple of times now, and both times were excellent. If you get hangry like I do, do yourself a favor and plug the address into your gps so you KNOW when you have arrived. The first time we went there (on a Saturday) we drove back and forth 4 times until I finally saw the little rooster-looking neon light sign at the window and realized that that was it! I also didn't expect it to be in a giant commercial-looking building, so I only focused on looking for a standalone restaurant. PS - they only take brunch reservations for parties 8 or more. The space is huge - open kitchen concept and has a giant bar area. It was kind of empty (noon on a Saturday), probably because it was still so new. Our server was great - he recommend sharing since dishes come out whenever they're ready. So the 3 of us ordered the buttermilk waffles, the breakfast pizza (sausage, panchetta, thinly shaved potatoes and egg), and another pizza with artichokes (ricotta) and arugula. The waffles came with homemade ham - ridiculously scrumptious. It had a caramelized apple reduction with some brown sugar crumbles and topped off with fresh whipped cream. The homemade ham was cured for at least 2 weeks and was the best ham I've ever had (well, in buffalo). Both pizzas were great! The following Sunday, we decided to come back for brunch with some other friends - and holy cow was it jam packed! This was around 12:30ish and we waited at least an hour for a table. What a difference between Saturday and Sunday! We ordered the waffles again and this time it came with sausage - still yummy. We also got the breakfast pizza again - still delicious. We ordered the half rotisserie chicken as our third dish - it was good, but we probably wouldn't order it again. It came with mushrooms (YUM!) and polenta (not so yum). I can't wait to go back for the bolognese and a bunch of other stuff on their dinner menu... though my new year resolution diet is seriously getting in the way of my foodie life!!! read more

Went to Roost last Saturday with a bunch of friends for dinner. The service was great (one wrinkle that wasn't there fault) and the food was really good. The place also had a cool vibe. I understand the menu changes a lot so I had to wait a while for them to bring me there gluten free notes (always nicer and more confidence inspiring to just add tags to the regular menu). Everything my husband and I shared was good. (He had pizza as well, which people loved.) Our part of the bill was reasonable for our shared plates, his part of the pizza, and part of several bottles of wine. Some of the individual prices seemed high for what you got (e.g. octopus only had four little bites). I would definitely go back. One of my favorite places with the ever changing menu, comfortable setting with great style. For lunch the princess is having duck confit with Parmesan and barley risotto while I am indulging in a crispy pancetta burger with provolone and roasted garlic mayo. Unless you know where to find this place, you would never know it was a restaurant from the outside. There is NO sign for it. The interior screams hipster chic. Beautiful interior with cheap light fixtures and decor. A group of friends came to celebrate a birthday brunch and really enjoyed it. The bar is gorgeous. The service was okay...they serve things as it's prepared, which is great because you get the food nice and hot, but weird because there were people who didn't get their food until the rest of the table was done. It was soooooo busy! The place was packed! And it was very loud, good luck hearing the people you are with. The food was amazing...for the most part. I got the mushroom udon and it was AMAZING. We got pizzas and pastellios and all kinds of goodies. But my sister got the Salmon hot pot and it was so unbelievably spicy that it was inedible. We turned it into a game at the table to see who would take a bigger bite without dying. My biggest complaint is that there is no description for any of the food. Just ok. We ordered the soy bean wonton and the Dave Dunn as starters. The Dave Dunn was good, two large shrimp on grilled bread, nice smoke flavor-the shrimp was over cooked. The wonton was good-it was a more of a soup so if you were expecting a gyoza/dumpling you will be surprised. I liked the flavor, my partner did not. Our entrees were the lamb shawarma and Korean short ribs with kimchi rice. My lamb was good, thinly sliced with just the right amount of fat and Smokey. The ribs had nice flavor and well cooked. The salt tho' TOO MUCH SALT on everything...it overwhelmed the food and it was all you could taste. We did not finish our meals. The peach shortcake was good the biscuit is incredibly flavorful but the bottom half was burnt on the top... I was sad about the food. Our waiter was splendid, attentive and fast. We liked him a lot. My boyfriend and I went here for Valentine's Day brunch and WOWFirst off, the place is stunning inside. Super trendy and hip. A little hard to find though - I wish they had a larger sign out front. I ordered the chicken and pork and waffles and it was delicious. But my boyfriend ordered the Nutella bake and that was a total game changer. We are all about trying new places but have been back to Roost a half dozen times. Truthfully, the menus are hit or miss. They change the menus I'd say every couple of weeks if not weekly. Definitely have had some not so great dishes. They experiment with all cultures and dishes. Sometimes it's good. Pizzas are consistent. Drinks are good but pricey and skimpy on alcohol. Wine selection is good. We've had a great dry rose recently. The reservation link always says no tables available but there really are. Idk what to say but you may find it a winner ... maybe not. read more

She helped us with the menu and provided suggestions on what to get. She did note that most plates are meant for sharing, which we did! Had a great time here for my early birthday dinner. The food is clean, and the atmosphere is just amazing for being in the middle of the revitalizing Westside. My mother had the Porchetta, Dad the gnocchi, and I had the Branzino. All the food was delicious, true to what it is, and all was eaten. The one main knock I have is that I wish the menu described everything that came with the meal. My mother's Porchetta has a nice side salad that I would have loved to have as well. Our waiter was also very soft spoken and it was hard to hear what he was saying, or what the specials were. I went to Roost today for lunch. As others have mentioned, the restaurant is easy to miss since there isn't any obvious signage. I ordered the cod which was served with a parsnip purée and garnished with a handful of small fried onions. The presentation was very nice and the food was good. I just wish I had been served more than what looked like an ounce of fish. I know food prices have risen, but that dish probably had $8 worth of food (i'm being generous) but I was charged $22. Very beautiful and unique interior, it is rustic but modern, industrial but classic. also they have very professional staffs who made our experience great. I got breakfast mimosa which was OK and light but tasty. We also ordered breakfast pizza and steak and egg. I loved break fast pizza much better that steak and egg just because of the crust. After parking in the most sketchy parking lot with the assumption my car was going to be stolen by the time I was out, I headed into Roost. I felt like I was Juicy J in a three six mafia video, if y'all don't know what that's means, I'll clear it up for you. It means I felt VIP through my whole experience. I was late for my reservation, like always but they didn't make a big deal which was great. Once I saw the menu, I went in shock. Amazing choices. It made me want to order everything. Started with drinks. I ordered a tequila based drink. It hit the spot. For an appetizer I started with the Blu pizza. Terrific !! I had the Fried Chicken- Green Papaya. I am so happy I was finally able to try out Roost. Ever since moving back to Buffalo in January it was on my list. Even though it took me almost a year I made it and it didn't disappoint! I decided to try out their brunch with a couple of friends. This menu changes every week which I didn't know until I got there. I did glance at other menus a couple of times on their Facebook from previous weeks but luckily didn't get to attached to anything (although I do wish someday I can try the bacon and egg risotto!). I love that it is always different because each time you visit you get to experience new flavors and tastes. We went during Christmas and it was decorated with a lot of different decorations. My favorite were Nutcrackers hanging from the bar. They have a beautiful wine fridges that I wish I could just transport to my house. Since it was brunch I didn't try any of their wines but they have a large selection. We decided to all start off with a Bloody Mary. So good! It was spicy which I enjoy but beware. We then split the breakfast pizza. I highly recommend this since this was my favorite thing out of everything I had. So many different flavors. I really enjoyed the egg and the maple syrup that they put on time. It was a great mix of sweet and savory. Then for my meal I ordered polenta with apple and sausage. It was dessert for breakfast with some protein added in so you don't get hungry a few hours later. The apples were my favorite part and added a lot of sweetness to the meal. I then ended the meal with another cocktail; champagne with elderflower liquor with grape fruit juice. It did have a special name but I cannot remember it. If you look for it on the menu you will find it thou.Very good-you can't go wrong with anything champagne based. The staff were all so friendly and I really liked our waitress. I also like that the chef/owner goes out to tables to deliver the food and check on things. Although he didn't come to ours he went to a lot of others. I have had some great meals here. Meals that have been burned into my brain. The chef is extremely talented with surprises in every dish.This last visit was just meh. Great service, wine apps, the entrees not so much. Three of us ordered pasta and risotto dishes. They all were just plain. My pasta with sausage and peppers relied on it being spicy to lift its under seasoned self all the plate. The risotto nothing spectacular and the carbonara's execution was off. read more

Sharing this review so folks don't have the same experience we had: -The restaurant is pretty hard to find...be prepared to look for street parking nearby and enter on the left side (if you are facing the building). Look for other people who look like they are going to a restaurant-it's how we found it. -The menu is incredibly vague-we couldn't find photos of any of the food on Instagram or on their website. The brunch menu is really a lunch menu...there is one item that could be considered breakfast. No disruptions on the menus, so we had no idea what to order. Our server seemed really put out when we asked questions about the menu for clarity. -The wait time for our food was longer than average...half the groups food was brought out to sit in front of us and get cold while we waited for the rest of our party to be served. read more

I was super excited to go here... once we got there i had weird vibes from the start. We waited an hour and 20 min for our food and while we were already waiting for an hour we saw the owner wearing a shirt that said "I'm super racist and gross". The owner apparently walks around with "bad reviews" on his tshirt. And I'm sorry but maybe a few people... Very few (weird) people would take time to write a FAKE bad review of a restaurant. I get maybe wearing bad reviews but one saying you're a racist is def not a joke. I doubt someone would call this guy a racist if it wasn't true, and then flaunting that you're racist? UPDATED: I came here for dinner this time and once again this place has blown my tastebuds out of the water! The halibut crudo was truly amazing and probably my favorite part of the dinner. Always fantastic and never disappointing. I'm really surprised Roost doesn't have more than 4 stars on yelp. Now this is a brunch that will really knock your socks off! Roost is very trendy and well put together inside. It has a very modern and clean cut appearance. The bar seating quite large which was awesome because the wait for a table was about an hour. My friend and I decided to eat at the bar and we were served relatively fast. The atmosphere here is great because there is plenty of light in the windows and it's not too loud or noisy so you can easily talk with your brunch date. The food was amazing!!! I got the Don don ramen which consisted of a fried egg, pork belly, sprouts, and kale atop very well seasoned ramen noodles. The noodles had a very pleasant sesame taste to them. It was a very well put together dish and the portion size was huge! I was only able to eat about half of the noodles before I had to tap out. I also tried a slice of my friend's pizza and that was also amazing. I would tell you what kind it was, but I don't remember as it had a topping on it that was a fancy culinary preparation that I had to Google. I normally don't like Bloody Mary's, but I tried a sip of my friend's and it was very good. It was just spicy enough and didn't make you feel like you were drinking cocktail sauce like some poorly executed Bloody Mary's I've tried before. I had a tropical rum based drink called the Day Dream and that was also a very good cocktail. It's on the sweeter side, but it didn't feel as though it was too sweet.
