Bit of an identity crisis. Is it an Italian joint or an old American diner? Stopped here on our way through the UP. There aren't many options and this seemed good as any. Decor is a little old and they could use an update and some help from a designer. But, the place seemed clean. All the staff was very friendly. We seemed to be waited on by the entire staff. Food was overall pretty good. Portions are ridiculously big. Wife had the ravioli with meatballs and enjoyed them. I had fried chicken and ribs. The fried chicken was excellent. Ribs were pretty awful. I'd recommend they just go ahead and take ribs off the menu. The salads weren't great. Don't bother with the onion rings. Nice selection of local bottled beer, but none on tap. Overall, pretty decent place for a stop along hwy 2. Stick with the classics and you won't leave hungry. read more

If I could give this place 0 stars, I would! Got seated right away, asked for a high chair, the waitress said ok, and we never got it. When we asked again for a high chair we were told that we never asked for one, in a very rude tone. We got water when we were seated. No one ever came around to take our order. This restaurant used to be known for homemade sauce, pasta, meatballs and made the northside Italians proud. They still claim their dishes are homemade but my cat poops out better looking meatballs. Over the years they have declined in quality but raised their prices to the point that I tell people not to go there anymore. I want to support them, being such an Iron Mountain staple as they were, but the food is just so terrible and so cheap in quality. The waitresses are tired and impatient. The owner is rude and has a temper, which he often displays in the restaurant. Fricken' horrible is what my Husband just said. I thought that was giving this place too much credit. My Husband, Daughter (4 years old) and I dined at Romagnoli's last evening (a Saturday night). We walked in and said, "Three." The hostess told us that it would be 30 minutes -- I peered over her shoulder, there were empty tables. Huh? She told us to have a seat at the bar. Fine. My Daughter loved sitting at the bar and she ordered for herself: "Pepsi with no ice, please." The bartender said, "We have Coke." We repeated the order and WINKED at her to serve the "Coke" but call it Pepsi. Nope. The bartender had to be right and insisted that they did not have Pepsi. Gee, thanks for helping us out with this. What's on tap? "We don't have tap beers, we have bottles and cans." Oh, how classy! Okay, what kind of beer do you have? She then placed a list in front of us and started making the Coke. She put ice in it. We stopped her and she said, 'oh, that's okay, I can make another one and still use this." She then proceeded to fill another glass with ice and serve it to our Daughter. This is when the warning sirens should have started blaring for us to leave. We asked to see menus while we waited and were told that the hostess would come by and give us a menu. Twenty minutes later, we got menus. Five minutes after that, the hostess returned to take our order. Mind you, we are STILL sitting at the bar. Another five minutes and we were escorted to our table - where our salads were waiting. Did I mention that the dining room wasn't filled? The salad was okay - not sure if it is recycled from earlier tables (it seemed quite watery) and had almost no dressing on it. Instead of garlic bread, a LOAF of bread is brought to the table - with a dull knife for you to try and gnaw through to get a slice. You are rewarded for not slicing your thumb or stabbing your fellow patrons in the eye with a mangled piece of bread that you can spread frozen butter to. My Daughter and I excused ourselves to wash our hands before dinner and came back to a baffled Husband/Father. Our food had arrived in our absence. BUT, the waitress had brought it to several other tables before settling on our table. While we were gone, my Husband ordered another Coke with no ice for our Daughter. Yep - got back and there was another glass FULL of ice and coke. My Husband had the Open-faced tenderloin with toast points and Gnocchi (do NOT get the Gnocchi - it does not resemble any other Gnocchi that we have ever had, they were tubes). Not even good tasting tubes of Gnocchi. I ordered the broiled cod with drawn butter. The Cod came in three pieces and each piece was different: SCALDING HOT, Hard/Rubbery and Cold. The plate was served on another plate (why? The plates didn't nestle into each other and made getting the food into a dicey spear-grabbing attempt). I ordered spaghetti for my side. I got Fettuccine with red stuff. The 'red sauce' on top of the gnocchi and Fettuccine was the most bland garbage that we have ever tasted. I ventured to say that it was canned tomatoes that were pureed. No seasonings were added. Plain, tinned tomatoes. Quite the acidic taste. Ick. A waitress checked on us as we were finishing our meal and asked if there was anything else that we wanted. Were there desserts? Something else that we should order? She didn't tell us and said that she would just get the bill. She returned with a large PAGE - it was our bill! Holy crap. Someone really needs to stream-line this place. The waitstaff doesn't listen and doesn't seem to care. The Décor? I had to laugh when I saw another post that said 1979 called and they want their décor back... No kidding! The floor of the restaurant was covered in mutilated bread crusts/crumbs - but the lighting was so bad that you could only see the blinding crumbs... Why are there large display cases throughout the dining room? Or books sporadically on shelves throughout the place? This place needs to honor their family and Clean this place up! Dingy and Dirty for a seemingly-pretentious eatery. We thought we were going to get homemade Italian food. Nope! My Husband remarked that it was like going back in time to a really bad supperclub from the Fifties that had somehow survived into the 70's. Expensive for horrid food, bad service and an utter lack of caring about people/customers. Oh, and family restaurant? No kids menu. We were advised to order items a la carte. Not sure how that would have worked - our Daughter ate off of our plates. Keep Driving. Go to The Venice or Mama Mia's in Ishpeming. or The Villa Capri in Marquette. I was a bit nervous about eating here, but my hotel recommended it! When I entered, I noticed a "musty" smell! (not a good start) but i didn't turn around. Then the girl seating me poured water from one half filled drinking glass into another half filled, then took it & me to my table! Still didn't turn around. After a couple minutes, my order of Atlantic Salmon on pasta was in! While waiting, had a garden salad with their own dressing and Roquefort cheese which was good, onion rings which were average and bread which was like the baked a loaf of freezer dough bread. Salmon n pasta came! Overwhelming fish order but didn't taste bad, just not good, so I didn't want to chance it and ate only the one bit. The Pasta and cheese sauce didn't have much flavor so I loaded it with the sprinkle parmigiano cheese. Generally, not very impressed! I probably won't go back. read more

Many years ago I ordered a steak and it was under cooked. I told the waitress and she kindly took it back and brought another one. The second steak was still not to the specifications of what I ordered, but I decided to hold further complaint and eat. Near the end of the meal the owner came over and confronted me about the steak. He said, "my food's not good enough for you?" I explained my experience. Kinda weird set up, but I guess everything I experienced in the U.P. was kinda weird. You walk in, place your name on the list (only 5 tables filled so not sure why there was a wait, but there was) and then they make you sit in the bar area with a menu. You have to order from the bar and they come to seat you when your food is ready so if you want apps or anything you have to eat them at the bar. Again...kinda weird and when we didn't know what to do we were made to feel stupid. The menu was a bit schizophrenic and the bar was filled with weird wooden, dust collecting "knick-knacks" that made me feel uncomfortable. I had a hard time deciding on what I would have to eat (do I go pasta, seafood or FRIED CHICKEN?). I chose pasta. The sauce was decent, but the pasta came straight out of a box. I cannot speak for the food but the service and staff are beyond awful. We were told it would be a 30 minute wait for a table for five; 30 minutes later we asked for an updated and we're informed it would be another 15-20 minutes. After waiting an hour in total we asked for an update and realistic expectation for being seating. The hostess and server with her yelled that they couldn't seat us before others and to "just wait patiently". That was enough for us to finally give up; regardless how good food could potentially be it's not worth dealing with their horrible service before the meal even begins. read more

Restaurant is dark and hasn't had a face lift in forever. The Italian food was ok, my brother had meat balls and spaghetti and decided his own were better, but these were passable. There is not enough wait staff. What was there was not inattentive, just overworked, busing their own tables and having to move a heavy shelf unit to reconstruct a dining area after a large party left. i had fried chicken--wonderful. Most of what was on the menu had dairy so lots was unavailable to me. Tried to have northern pike, but was pre-breaded (milk in breading) and so i expect it was frozen. But there's not many other places to eat in Iron Mt, and prices are low compared to bigger cities.The bread (even if it is frozen, i didn't think so) was without milk, and excellent and i was able to slice it all by myself. read more

Wow- and not in a good way! I travel small towns all around the US as part of my job and always prefer to eat at the local places that are recommended by hotel staff- but in this case I should have stuck with Pizza Hut. The place is incredibly dark- I always think places with low lighting have things to hide. I had the Italian Holiday- tip for the chef- before you place the pasta on the plate- take the time to hold it over the water you took it from and shake it to get water off- make sure it is drained- my sauce was incredibly watered down - the noodles were floating in the water they were stored in. The sausage was incredibly over cooked- tasted burnt- I wasn't sure if it looked burnt- again no lighting. The prices were incredibly high for the quality- undercooked fettuccine noodles, one really mushy meatball, one over cooked sausage, a few ravioli and an over abundance of gnocchi all placed in a plate of steam table water and a 12 ounce bottle of domestic beer-$23.00 - Robbery! On a positive note- huge loaf of bread and - if the red sauce was not watered down with noodle water- would have been tasty! As a fellow yelper put it- keep driving! read more

Gross. My mom previously wrote a review and this is my first as I feel it deserves another. Old fashioned wasn't what I expected. Salad was nothing but iceberg lettuce. Spaghetti sauce tasted like it was purchased at the dollar store. Meatballs were tasteless, finely ground as if they were also store bought. The food was A-OK, but not great, actually quite average to below average. Their sauce is not very good in my opinion and the chicken breast and gnochi weren't all that good either. Bread was good and salad ok with crumbled blue cheese and french dressing (add $$ for crumbles). The best part about this place is that the servings are enormous, so you won't leave hungry. If you want to wait 2 hours to eat then go here. Couldn't get the bartenders attention to refill our drinks for the full hour we were at the bar and When finally seated from the bar to the other room we could see several empty tables meaning that long of a wait was very unnecessary. We were seated by a vent that blew cold air at us while we waited another hour to get our food and were given a pitcher of water so dirty we wouldn't even refill our drinks from it. Waitresses walked by several times while we ate and never checked in on us until we were done. The staff is amazing and the food is great. The owner, however, steals from his employees. He makes them all share tips, then at the end of the night he steals half the credit card tips. Those ladies work very hard. From current and past employees the owner is very hard to work for and now he is stealing from his employees. If you eat there and use a credit card leave a cash tip so these ladies quit being taken advantage of. read more

Wow... Thats all I can say about this place. Lets break this down into a few sections. Decor: 1979 called they would like their wood paneling back. I would say overall this place needs a serious overhaul, and the "This is Iron Mountain what do you expect" excuse just doesn't cut it. Food: If garlic is good for your heart this place should be on a list of top heart healthy restaurants! They seriously go overboard on their garlic. Aside from the issues with the gatlic overall the food although plentiful is at best bland. This is going to sound harsh but in a side by side comparison I'm taking Fazolli's. Service: I have no idea who my server was. The hostess is also the order taker while you wait for your table at the bar then she just short of sprints to your table where your salad and appetizers wait, then a seperate woman brings the bland with large garlic flavor pockets main entree, when you can, flag down the hostess for another drink, yet another woman will grab your dirty dishes and bring you a 3 page bill which then you take back to the bar to pay yet a completely different person. Overall everyone is very friendly but they definitely are not attentive. Price: I would suggest stopping and donating plasma before you eat here, you'll need the extra cash and being a little low on fluids might enhance your experience. Overall: I'd have to say pass on this one. I don't want to sound harsh but for 2 people a $60 meal should dazzle a little bit.. read more

First the owner was rude to a bartender then told her to give a person a drink they didn't order because it was close enough and they were our of what they ordered. He is verbally abusive to his employees. Then we were seated by the hostess then literally SCREAMED at by the owner because our order wasn't taken before we were seated. He told us to order or leave, so we left. That's how he treats his customers. This is my first account of his behavior, but I've heard plenty of stories. I normally feel bad writing negative reviews but not in this case. Dwight (the owner) is such an ass. He deserves no business. He is rude, arrogant and selfish. You're much better off diving 5 minutes down the road and dining at El Capitan... where the food is superb and the service is much better. The El cap has a welcoming atmosphere with lovely service and great food.. I'll admit the food at romagnolis is pretty good but not that great to deal with the poor service and that ass of an owner. He's actually made comments about children not being welcome at his establishment. He says to bring them to McDonald's. Steve the owner of El cap is such a great guy. You'll see him make his way around his restaurant asking how people's meals are and starting warm conversation. Dwight on the other hand.... is a cheap arrogant ass hole.. he lost a long time customer over .25 because he literally wouldn't pay .25 for a delivery charge. Let me remind you this man was also a weekly customer at romagnolis. They have not been there since he embarrassed them in front of the whole restaurant saying he wasn't paying that damn quarter. (The quarter was for a delivery charge for water softner). I will never visit this establishment again. I have had many personal negative experiences and have heard of many. I've been in line waiting for be seated and a couple who came in behind me got seated first. (I'm sure Dwight knew them). This is no way to run a business. Shame on you Dwight. This place has great steaks! The bread they serve is really good as well. The service is so-so...they take your order while you are sitting at the bar and then set your table up. When you have a large group you have to figure out who's salad is who's. Once you are at your table the service is not that great. Hard to get anyones attention even though there are people running all over the place. With not many choices in the area all in all a good place to eat. read more
