My mother had a phone appointment with him and as she's telling him how she felt ( which isn't good) he rushed her and didn't take time to hear what symptoms she is experiencing!!! Dr. Rollington Ferguson is a consummate professional with superb bedside (people) skills and extraordinary medical knowledge. His assessments are thorough, yet completed efficiently. He takes his time to listen to my concerns and responds to each one in a manner in which I understand and can do what is needed after the visit. He is supported by a diverse staff who also help me to feel comfortable during each visit and are great communicators (multilingual). My husband and I are both cared for by Dr Ferguson. Dr. Ferguson is a most competent and caring heart specialist! He kept my Mother alive and well for five additional years after she suffered a heart attack and another doctor said she'd die that day. He also kept me alive when I had strange symptoms that eluded diagnosis over several years, even after extensive testing! He finally sent me to Stanford ER, where it took them two days to diagnose a benign brain tumor. 12 hours of surgery and I've been on a roll ever since, with annual check ups by Dr. Ferguson. I was referred to Dr. Ferguson by Dr. Strudwick, who needed a pre operation physical. I have my own doctor who is in Marin and this was easier for me as I just had my annual physical in Sept and didn't want to travel cross bay for a simpe, check up. Dr. Ferguson was wonderful. he spent time with me, answered all my questions including those maybe more appropriate for my own physician. Dr. Ferguson is a very professional and kind cardiologist and primary doctor. He respects his patients very much. I work in the health care industry. Sometimes some patients ask me if I know any good cardiologist. I would recommend Dr. Ferguson whole heartedly. Usually a patient can get an appointment within 1 week. I just referred a patient with heart disease who doesn't even have a primary doctor. He is 75, with many complicated diseases. I asked him the reason he doesn't have a primary doctor. He said it's hard to find a good doctor who will accept him as a patient. So I referred him to Dr. Ferguson, and he got see Dr. Ferguson in one week. The patient later called me back to thank me for referring Dr. Ferguson to him. He said Dr. Ferguson is so patient and so nice to him. Dr. Ferguson explained all the important points to him. I had a heart attack a few months ago and was referred to Dr. Ferguson for on-going treatment. He has been a Godsend. He explained what was going on with my heart, etc. He is on top of his game. Dr Ferguson is a wonderful cardiologist. I am sorry to see that there are people out there that would grade him on his interpersonal skills rather than his profession. It goes to show if you give someone something for free they will not know the value and or appreciate the generosity. If you need a hand to hold I suggest you bring a family member or a friend. I've been a patient of Dr. Ferguson for 5 years (congestive heart failure), he's excellent. He became my cardiologist when I went into the hospital and I've stayed with him despite the fact that his office is in Oakland and I lived in Felton and San Jose. He's a damned good doctor, he knows his work and he's easy to talk to about symptoms (he listens) and diagnoses and prescriptions have been spot on. If you are ever in a position where you really need a good doctor, you'll be extremely lucky to find one this good. read more

Good Doctor-Incompetent Staff! Ive seen Dr. Ferguson about 4 times this year and although he is a good doctor he has a VERY imcompetent staff. Ive left 3 messages for Dr. Ferguson to contact me for a very simple question..do I need more bloodwork for my follow up appointment and if I can simply follow up with my primary care physician instead of coming in again. First message left on 8/10/15 and told the receptionist that anyone could call me back with the answer...No call back. Called again...no call back. Called Tues 8/25 and stated Id called twice about my upcoming appt and STILL no call back. I called this morning 8/27 annoyed at not receiving a call back for the 3rd time and asked for the office manager. I was told she was busy and the receptionist asked if she could help me. I told her id called 3 times (this making my 4th) and surpisingly the receptionist knew exactly who I was and told me that Dr. Ferguson said I could follow up with my Primary Doctor.. Awesome...so you asked him but still didnt bother to call me back! VERY PROFESSIONAL! I almost fear how long it would take to get a call back if it was something more important. The receptionist apologized and handed the phone to the office manager who I told what happened. She didnt seem to care I asked her to cancel my appointment and make a copy of my chart to pick up by 4pm. Dr. Ferguson called me that afternoon to discuss my follow up appointment. I asked if he was aware that id called 3 times since 8/10 or that Id cancelled my appointment and would be picking up my chart. He wasnt aware of that. I told him my complaint and he said hed speak to his staff. He told me he wanted to refer me to a rheumatologist. I told him that his receptionist told me earlier that he said i could follow up with my primary and he stated hed never told her that! Ok im sorry...this is BAD. What if Dr. Fergueson never called me to tell me this important information? This receptionist was apparently trying to cover her ass because she never spoke to Dr. Ferguson and LIED and gave me wrong and incorrect information that could have been detrimental to my health!! I went that afternoon to get my chart and the receptionist said Dr. Ferguson was reviewing it. He came down to apologize and review my chart with me. Dr. Ferguson was going over my EKG and noticed a page missing and asked the receptionist why wasnt it in there. Im sorry...I asked for my full chart which wasnt that big and she skipped an important page of my EKG?! Really guys!?!? I told Dr. Ferguson this is why Im annoyed with your staff and now youve viewed it first hand! Another issue...twice I was informed (once by mail with a bill, the second time at an office visit) that my co pay was not paid which infact I paid them at the time of my visit IN CASH which is the only payment method they take. After them searching their receipt books they found my payment stub. Wow...if youre taking cash from people how about process it as they give it to you? Ill be finding a better office to go to. It makes no sense to have more than 5 people on staff for one doctor and to get such shoddy careless service. read more

It's amazing what a long walk and a little Stevie Wonder can do for you; I'm much calmer, and I've gained a little perspective. I had been upset over a phone call that I had received from Dr. Ferguson yesterday. He had contacted me to discuss my review, which he characterized as dishonest and slanderous. He had also threatened to sue me. I'm not proud to say that I was defensive. I was appalled that a doctor would use aggressive and threatening language when he knew that I was at home recovering from open heart surgery. I was angry that he felt it was appropriate to accuse me of maliciously creating a false statement. I was frustrated because I felt that he wasn't listening to me. I was annoyed because he forced me to speak to him at an inopportune time for me. But I'm a grown woman. There are better ways to handle unpleasantness than throwing attitude. And for that I'm sorry. I don't agree with his methods, but I can see why he would be so eager to speak with me. I can imagine how surprised and offended he would have been to see that his only rating was dismal and written by one whom he treated pro bono. I'm not sure which part or parts of my criticism were most objectionable to him. Two people who won't listen to each other aren't great communicators. However, I do remember that he defended his work by saying that he did everything by the book and that he did not misread the EKG test results. This led me to believe that he didn't recall my first encounter with him. Dr. Ferguson first treated me at a free clinic around November of last year. That summer I had been experiencing a burning sensation in my throat and a pain in my chest that was triggered by light activity. As I didn't have insurance, I was grateful that there were people in this world who were willing to donate their expertise and service. That examination was mostly like any other. I told him my symptoms. He didn't take out a stethoscope to check my heart or lungs, but he did request that the nurse perform an EKG test. She wasn't familiar with the machine, so he guided her through the process. When he had the results he told me that there was nothing wrong. Dr. Ferguson then asked me what I thought was the issue. I told him that it felt a condition I had a few years back where my lung capacity had diminished due to inflamed bronchial tubes. Dr. Ferguson gave me Albuterol and Advair and advised me how to use those two products. I walked out of the clinic feeling thankful and relieved that there was nothing seriously wrong with me. The second time I saw Dr. Ferguson was in his own office in March or April of this year. Another doctor at the free clinic referred me to Dr. Ferguson for a cardio stress test after listening to my list of symptoms and reviewing that first EKG test. He said that the results were abnormal. I advised him that Dr. Ferguson had said that the test showed nothing unusual. To which this doctor replied, "Well then, shame on him because he misread it." To be fair, I don't know for sure that Dr. Ferguson misread the EKG. The referring doctor could have been joking. He could have been overly concerned about a minor blip on the test. The machine could have been faulty. But, Dr. Ferguson found abnormalities in my cardio stress test and appropriately referred me to Highland Hospital for a nuclear stress test. I initially wrote that Dr. Ferguson wasn't concerned about my abnormal test results. That's my opinion, not fact. He might have been very worried. It just didn't appear to me that he had any concerns about my health as he made so little effort to speak with me about the results. I believe Dr. Ferguson would like it known that the referral didn't include a consultation. That's true. And I should also point out that he was doing me a great favor by performing an expensive test for free. What I don't understand is why it didn't occur to him that a patient who might be worried for her life might need a little hand holding. read more

I simply had to comment on a prior review as Dr. Ferguson chose not to respond to a negative review. First of all; I am a nurse and I have worked with Dr. Ferguson at both the free clinic at St Vincent De Paul and subsequently at the location where magilla (pseudonym) received free care and is intensely familiar with the situation. Dr. Ferguson has a private office in Oakland and gave charitable care once a week. Magilla was an obese, diabetic who told him that she had symptoms of asthma. She was given medications for her asthma. Her ECG had nonspecific changes which is seen in 80 percent of normal ECGs. Because she was uninsured, Dr. Ferguson sent her to be seen at Highland General hospital...the county hospital for a nuclear stress test. Magilla never went to the county hospital but approximatelt six months later obtained insurance. She then went to a private doctor for increased symptoms. She was appropriately referred for intervention. This case illustrates the importance of having medical insurance. Dr. Ferguson is a caring, competent physician whom I have watched care for many patients in the free clinic. It is unfortunate that Magilla would use her unfortunate circumstance to malign this excellent physician. read more

I've known Dr. Ferguson for maybe 15 years; I was referred to him by another doctor I was seeing of another specialty. Dr. Ferguson is a very nice, concerned and professional doctor. He is quiet and mild-mannered for the most part. He does not wear his feelings on his sleeve, but he is passionate about his business practice. Even if you make a complaint, say, about his staff, he won't go off on them. He'll quietly take them to the side and talk firmly and matter-of-factly to them. But THEY get the message. Being in the profession he is in for so long, maybe he did not see the need to also use his stethascope. (referring to Megillah C.) Maybe he forgot, maybe he didn't feel the need when he felt he could get the required results from the EKG or the stethascope was secondary. I don't know nor do I claim to know. And I've been less than happy with him a couple times myself. But that has nothing to do with his performance as a physician. I understand your emotional feelings from a personal standpoint; however, professionally I feel you were out of line to post what you did. For PERSONAL &/or EMOTIONal things, you would do better to speak to him about it if you feel that strongly about it, or even write him a letter privately. I think this forum is for opinions &/or facts about (his) performance, not other personal issues. I would trust Dr. Ferguson with any cardiology or heart, or health issues I may have. He has never given me a reason to feel otherwise. He is opinionated, but I've never seen him raise his voice over a low tone. read more

I was a witness, When Mary B. allowed her dog to defecate on the grounds of the property. She made no attempt to pick up "The feces". The groundskeeper-who is not an employee of Dr. Ferguson asked her to pick it up. She refused, at which time they had a verbal altercation. It is sad that she would use this as an opportunity to rate a physician: she has never seen. I have been a patient of Dr. Ferguson since 1997.
