Look, nobody knows physical media better than me, believe me. I've had the greatest platinum records hanging in the most luxurious towers all over the world, and let me tell you, what this CD place is doing is absolutely Tremendous.I walked into the shop, and it was a spectacular operation, frankly. The rows of discs? Beautiful. Perfectly alphabetized. The plastic cases? Crystal clear, not a single crack. Nobody has ever seen a selection like this before. They have everything from classic rock to the finest orchestras. The sound quality on these compact discs is so crisp, so deep--unbelievable audio, a lot of people don't know that. Streaming on those low-energy phone apps sounds like pure static, a total joke. But you put one of these CDs in the tray, and it sounds like a trillion dollars. The staff behind the counter? The best people. Very smart. They know exactly where every single album is.I checked out that other music store at the mall--the big corporate chain--and let me tell you, it is a total Disaster. A complete failure. They don't even sell music anymore, frankly! It's just cheap t-shirts and broken headphones. A total scam. And if you do find a CD, it's scratched up and overpriced. Very sad! The workers there are completely clueless and have very low energy. They don't know the difference between the Beatles and the Beach Boys.But this CD shop? Magnificent. They do a fantastic job. They win so much, your car stereo will get tired of winning. A lot of people don't know this, but keeping the art of the compact disc alive with great dignity is very difficult. Very rare. I went in today to purchase a vinyl that was posted on the stores instagram account overnight. I was the first person in line. When I walked in and asked for the signed Demi Lovato vinyl a white male told me that they did not have it and it was a mistake. He claimed that the picture that they took for their story was fake and that it wasn't taken by them. Yet the picture was taken inside their business, you can tell by the picture. The white male kept saying that it was not real and that it wasn't signed. I left the store. I then called and asked for the gentleman's name and they refused to tell me the name for review purposes. "The manager" a latina girl said she also couldn't give me her name even though she claimed to have been the manager. Record stores received the signed edition but this store claimed they didn't. They probably did this to resell the vinyl on ebay or one of their employees took the vinyls. They say to support small business and I'm a big believer in that but after this experience and the gaslighting I will now take my business to Shuga Records, or Reckless Records. read more

Bought a 20th Anniversary Deluxe edition vinyl, took it home to find out all 4 albums are warped. I took it back to the store for a refund. They would not refund the sale. Regardless of the sound quality if you buy a Special Deluxe edition of something and it is damaged, the place of business should refund you. I've spent money in this store before and consistently found the staff standoffish and unwelcoming. I will not be coming back here to buy anything and I recommend others stay away too. There are plenty of small business record stores that are way more courteous and stand buy what they sell. read more

Mixed feelings about here. Prices aren't great, and some sections are marked up. I very much enjoy being here as you can find some special things buried in bins, but I've now had 2 experiences where I've learned a $50+ vinyl I've purchased here is a bootleg without knowing until I opened at home. Old school as old school gets. This is how it used to be kids. You would actually go to the record store, hang out, listen, discuss, and ultimately purchase, only not all of the stores were as cool as this one. Plenty of vinyl for the purists, niche items as well, even a pretty janky collection of B movies to choose from. Having said all that, I no longer consume in this manner, so it is almost a bit like a monument or museum if you will. A cool one at that. Definitely worth a pop in if you are in the hood. read more

This place is pretty decent, especially since you can't really find record stores like this anymore. I rarely come here, but when I do, it literally has the exact same smell it did when I came 10 years ago. I don't know how to even explain the smell, but it has a distinct incense-type smell I guess? Anyways, this store has tons of CDs. Like a massive supply of them, and they are all laid out alphabetically by genre. They have some vinyls, as well, but I can't believe how many CDs are in here, especially because it's not even some small hole in the wall; it's a pretty big store. The prices are kind of high, so if you'd rather buy online, that's your prerogative, but I wouldn't mind buying from a local business that has been around for YEARS. They do have cheaper bins and shelves in the back of the store, as well. Some as little as $5.99! The decor is pretty cool with a statue of a dog by the front door that has also been there for decades, and they also have tons of CDs hanging from the ceiling. One thing that bothers me is their huge selection of porn that is seen right when you walk in because it's right next to the cash registers. Very odd placement of all of that crap and its awkward honestly. I never had a problem with workers, but most of them don't seem to really care about their jobs. Very laid back, hot topic-styled teenagers normally are working, but all are pretty nice. Rolling Stones has incredible prices on CDs and DVDs. What are those? Well, sit down on grandad's lap and let me tell you about the 90's! Of course, if you didn't know what a compact disc was, the thousands of shiny discs hanging from the ceiling at Rolling Stones would be a good primer. (see my "forbidden" inside store pic! Seriously, an employee practically tackled me when I took a picture and said inside pics are not allowed). Actually, the employee did pounce, but he was super apologetic and nice about it. The Security Guard on the other hand...he wasn't big on small talk, but nice enough. Still, I had a handful of CDs and DVDs in plain view, doesn't that mean I'm going to purchase them and not expect a five-finger discount? Security, seriously? What is this, Mallrats? I came to RS with a small list in my head of somewhat newer CDs by recent artists to purchase. Arcade Fire at basement prices, yes! Doves' release from a year ago? Asked the security guy because Doves didn't even have its own category card. Nope, that one was gone last year. See, Rolling Stones doesn't keep any past CDs by recent artists, just great prices on New Releases and even better prices on has beens. Rolling Stones' bread and butter is $5.99 deals on reissues of your favorite artists of the 60s-80s. They also carry an impressive selection of live concert DVDs for around $9.99. I'll certainly be back to Rolling Stones' but will leave the camera at home so I don't get tackled next time. read more

As a record store, name and ambiance carries the Rolling Stones experience, in my opinion. My music interests aren't really obscure, but even so, I had a hard time finding albums for those artists, which leads me to believe there's a particular taste in music this store leans toward (and a blind spot to other(s)). Also, don't expect to find a good price-- if the record isn't overpriced, it'll be at cost. However, if you are into exploring record stores, I would definitely add this to the list just to discover the vibe. read more

As a follow up I was sent a reply to my 1st review where they say they are sorry but they do still have a no Returns policy on defective Vinyl... Huh? So if I buy a record that is sealed up and walk out the front door and get to my car and open the record and it's all scratched or dinged like mine was I'm stuck with it. That's a bull carp policy. I did nothing wrong. I'm tired of the employees following me around staring at me like I'm going to steal something. I don't carry a bag or anything. Let's not pretend your vinyl and cds can't be purchased from somewhere else. I've easily dropped around $100 - $150 the few times I've gone, but not anymore. I know you have cameras but I guess that's just not enough to calm your paranoia. If you treat your customers like potential criminals, you're going to keep losing them. This store always has a nice selection and I enjoy the atmosphere. Yes, many music cds can be purchased thru internet but this store is a shopping experience. I never leave empty handed. I also find some novelty items that I wasn't looking for but bought anyways. If you have not shopped here, come here at least once in your lifetime and check it out. Highly recommended. read more

Not welcoming to those above a certain age. I shopped off and on at this store over the years. My most recent visit ( March 6, 6:00 pm) was very discouraging -it seems as if you are above a certain age you are no longer welcome to shop there. I took issue with three (3) things: (1) I was actually looking for something and in the hour I spent in the store NO ONE asked if I needed any help. (2) The staff selects their own musical selections (per the store's manager) without any regard to the content of the music. Before they would blast "metal," that evening the "cool" kids were listening to rap (with profanities included). At first I didn't notice, but then it became obvious where each "swear" word was placed, so you could anticipate it's inclusion. (3) Spurred on by the music, the employees behind the counter partied it up and added their own for flavoring. I had 3 cds and 2 vinyl records in my arms. I decided to get the cds, but left $50 worth of vinyl in the store. I can buy all my vinyl, cds and dvds elsewhere just as easily. Early on the following weekday (Monday), I called and spoke with the manager (Sarah) - she said the right words - but her whole attitude over the phone was dismissive and didn't seem to mind when I told her I would spend my $80 and above elsewhere in the future. I've been coming here for over 25 years. I'm looking forward to getting back to normal after Covid-19. Would love to just walk in and buy a Blues record or T-shirt. Since moving back to Chicago this year, I'm excited to hit all the old stomping grounds. Especially places like Rolling Stones that are thankfully alive and ticking here in Chicago. I can still see CDs of old alternative bands I played in stapled to the walls! Along with many other bands from the Chicago music scene. I think that's pretty cool that they have kept those up there for so long. I lived in LA for 11 years and the famous record store there is Amoeba Records. They also have a great punk rock scene in Long Beach with good record stores there too. But here in Chicago our record store that makes you feel like home is definitely Rolling Stones. Make sure to stop in if you're visiting the city. They have a great selection and this place is Chicago history. Especially if you're looking for some Chicago blues records on vinyl. Somewhat odd place. You don't really encounter record stores like this anymore. At least I haven't since the mid 2000s. They have only new vinyl, and it is way in the back of the store. It's in the old milk crates, too. So they either just recently started carrying vinyl or they just don't care enough about it to put it in a proper display. There are massive amounts of CDs, though. I suppose if I was looking for an album that was only released on CD, this would be the place to go. It's hard to imagine CD sales justify the stock they have. Who is buying them? It was a Saturday afternoon and there was only 1 other customer there. Oh, and 4 (!) employees. There seemed to be a sizable porn video section near the front. Maybe that is their bread and butter? Like the CD, though, it is hard for me to imagine DVDs selling that much in the age of high speed internet. The look of the place I liked a lot. It was like a more chaotic, densely packed and artistic version of a small Sam Goody or Virgin Records I thought. But overall, I'm looking for used vinyl or at least a better selection of new vinyl so I probably wouldn't come back here, personally. read more

I've been coming to this store since I could remember. My sister used to buy CD's and go to signings here all the time. I'm giving 2 stars because this used to be a 5 star record store and now when you walk in they treat you like a musically-ignorant criminal. Perhaps it's because I'm a female, or maybe the employees are just this rude, but these days they make me feel so unwelcome. I work in retail and I understand loss prevention but I was walking through the store looking for a particular new release and was followed so closely I felt uncomfortable the entire time. The next time I went in with my boyfriend to see if they carried his band's CD - which they do. We purchased the album in excitement and on the way out I spotted my keys on the floor. I walked back about 5ft to grab them and was shouted at as if I had just attempted to steal literally all of their merchandise. I said "I just dropped my keys" and they ripped the bag from my hand and told me I had to leave the CD at the counter. I was on shock. My boyfriend was in shock. It was completely insane. I haven't returned since, mostly because my keys and lanyard were in plain view on the floor and we were the only people in the store other than the 2 employees as far as I could tell. Music lovers like myself are often the outcasts/ rebels/ misfits, but this store used to feel like a safe place. Now it feels like a cold empty room shimmering with untouched CD's. In this digital age, they should welcome the customers they have. Not scare us away by shouting and judging us. Also, with the amount of new music they sell, you would think their old-timer employees would at least have SOME knowledge of their newer artists, but they haven't the past few times I entered the store. They were unhelpful and blankly stared at me. Not a good experience. This place is nothing like it used to be. read more

I remember telling all my friends to stop listening to Vertical Horizon and to check out Sonic Youth. We came to you, and you provided us with all the Sonic Youth we could handle. I remember browsing your aisles and picking up some great Smashing Pumpkins bootlegs. To this day you were the only place where I could find an album by the Plasmatics. I used to come here when I was in high school in the early 2000s but stopped when I moved to the West Loop. During the pandemic I was starved for entertainment and remembered Rolling Stones. I've been making monthly treks to stock up on bizarre and kitschy exploitation and horror movies ever since. If you're looking to revisit movies you've seen on Svengoolie or rented at the video store as a kid you'll find them here in brand-new 4K resolution, no less! They also boast an impressive art house and foreign film selection. Everything from Criterion, Kino Lorber, Troma, Vinegar Syndrome, Arrow and more! And essential classics of every genre are always affordable on DVD and blu-ray. I'd say Rolling Stones's movie selection is rivaled only by Amoeba's because even though it's smaller in size everything feels so expertly curated. There's zero fluff. I'll spend at least an hour poring over dozens of titles every time I go because their inventory replenishes often. There's always something new to discover for the adventurous cinephile! Granted, the most awesome blu-rays don't come cheap but when you consider most are so obscure they're not streaming anywhere and physical copies online are priced the same, why not buy them here and support a small business? I had the chance to meet the guy who orders the horror movies yesterday when he noticed my Cold Cave shirt and we talked music for a bit. If anyone in management reading this was ever curious about expanding the music section to include edgier and avant-garde vinyl I would get this guy to make the picks--he has excellent taste in music as well! read more

The clerks seem to ALL have holier then thou attitudes which is absolutely hilarious as I've heard they all make very bare bones minimum wage and are mostly 20 somethings with nothing but a crappy music store job to their names. In today's world, Rolling Stones in Norridge is kind of sad. No one really wants to buy just (or mostly) CDs anymore. Unfortunately, they decided to leave an emphasis on vinyl by the side of the road a while ago, and although that might have made sense in 1995, Rolling Stones in 2015 is now behind the times because of doing so. Yes, they do have some new LPs stashed away in the back, but the selection is more limited than it looks. Like some of the other "baby boomer strongholds from earlier times," for instance Val's Halla in Oak Park or Beverly Records in Chicago, there's a portion of us record collectors above the age of 35 who want to give these places the benefit of history in current times--"oh they just need to catch up or change some things a little, and they have so much history, so...". But the fact is, they've had years to do so now, and they still haven't. Rows of cds, with a little vinyl in the back, was cool in 2005, or maybe even 2010. In 2015, not so much. I spent so many angsty teen years doing what us pissed off, anti-establishment, pseudo-anarchist, parent hating kids do: going to the HIP to eat at the Great Steak & Potato, but most of all, going to Rolling Stones. The strong aroma of incense soon as you walk through the door, employees that think they're "too cool for school", aisles upon aisles of CD's, the listening stations, and of course grabbing The Onion before you walk out the door. Prices have always been reasonable. Much better than music stores in the mall. Granted, I don't buy CD's anymore since getting the interweb at home, thus I haven't purchased anything here in a LONG time. But by browsing other reviews, there isn't any indication their prices have gone up. In conclusion, I've definitely grown out of this place. Rolling Stones used to be a place of childhood wonder. I'd gaze at the cardboard cutouts on the roof and huge posters in the windows from the backseat of my parents' car as we drove to my grandparents' house. So it's sad that years later the only wonder left is when I'm thinking, how the heck does this store stay in business? Rolling Stones gets more wrong than right. From the archaic way they display their band shirts to an analog inventory, none of it's cute or charming. And while it may be ironic to say that a store specializing in CD sales needs to get with the times, GET WITH THE DAMN TIMES. There is something seriously wrong when the nearby Best Buy offers more of a variety in music than a record store. I want to love Rolling Stones, but every time I walk in I come away empty-handed. It's not as though I'm looking for some obscure foreign death metal album either. They didn't have Matt & Kim or Slash. I'd say, hey, at least they offer porn, but then they put that display right next to teenage cashiers. Who the fuck would buy porn in front of the judgmental eyes of a child? Several key improvements could upgrade this store back to respectable levels. They're open till midnight. They have that going for them. On the northwest corner of Irving, Forest Preserve and Octavia is a landmark music store that stood out on that intersection till the towering HIP parking garage and Target store overshadowed it in recent years. For fans of independent music stores, this is like a model of success. For rock fans, this is a shrine for worshipping your guitar gods. I shopped here since I was 16 and still stop in from time to time. It's amazing how this place has survived, beating out the surrounding competition over the decades: Musicland in the 80s, mall music stores, and now fighting off Target and Best Buy across the street, as well as numerous online alternatives like Amazon. Part of it is the selection. The place is well-organized and quick to navigate, for easy locating of bands and genres. There's a separate DVD section with videos you will find nowhere else. They do a good job of catering to niche markets without you needing a special order necessarily. The exterior walls of the store and the display on its roof are its greatest advertisements - larger than life caricatures of past and present pop stars: The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, and among the legends of the past like Bowie, Michael Jackson, Led Zeppelin, Jim Morrison. I still remember their cutouts displayed along the many windows surrounding the store. Inside the store, CD's hang from the ceiling very densely, as far as the eye can see. While the stereotypical Rolling Stone shopper might be a heavy metal or punk type, which is an image it has upheld since I started shopping here over 20 years ago, they have everything from current pop hits to oldies to Yo-Yo Ma, reggae, or even country. Some rare imports or even bootlegs occasionally appear alongside regular releases, which is why it pays to check out your favorite artist's CD row every time you come. The DVD's consist of movie classics, TV shows, music videos, rare B-movies and even the naughty girls in lingerie flicks. There's also a good selection of the usual black T-shirts near the front as well. The back wall carries the best bargains in the store for current releases, in addition to the close-out discountbins near the front. By the exit, you can find a stack of Chicago Readers and other independent publications, promotional concert flyers, and even an occasional "looking for drummer" posting on the wall. In the world of groomed and manicured big box or retail chains, you would never see this. The cashiers, though they are often pierced, tattooed, or downright scary-looking gothic types are also quick, efficient and don't make snide remarks about why you are buying something that does not appeal to their own taste. I'd feel just as comfortable bringing up a Rage Against the Machine CD as I would "Lawrence Welk's Champagne Music" boxed set to the checkout... Which is why I will keep coming back to this place. read more
