If you're looking for lots of stock of new stuff this might not be your spot but if you want fairly priced used records then this is a great spot. I have found a lot of hidden gems in here over the years at both locations. In the past I've gotten nice vinyl copies of hard rock bands like Captain Beyond and Lucifers Friend for NOT discogs/online prices. Last week I got a sealed Weird Al cassette for just a few dollars and this album is not available on vinyl so it makes it extra fun. They are not trying to be cool or capitalize on vinyl - they just like and sell lots of music and media. Go support - Go dig!

Sadly, the Brown Cow is closed for construction, so we missed out. We had already found parking, so instead of buying ice cream, we went treasure hunting next door. We had a lot of fun moving from one vendor area to the next as we worked our way around the store. It is very, very full of merchandise, but didn't feel super cramped. It would be harder to navigate if you are a larger size or if you need a walker or wheel chair. The aisles and vendor set-ups are narrow, so it does take some patience and balance to maneuver in and around. But everything is clean and well organized, so big plus there. And there is a massive amount of unique things. Smelled fine, too, not stuffy or smoky. The owner was walking around with a spray bottle, tidying up. Owners and customers all wore masks. 6-foot distancing marks are on the floor and additional signs are all around the shop, reminding shoppers about COVID precautions, which was appreciated. I think this would be a fun place to go on a masked, socially-distanced date! Ice cream + treasure hunting.

A refreshing opposite, from the jerk owner Vintage Vinyl in Evanston has(won't get into him any further here, but if you want to know more about that place look up my review on them). And I wish all music store employees and owners, were as nice as this guy is! Definitely stop here, if you happen to go out to this part of Oak Park and are either looking for CDs, or even just like to have good conversations with others about music. The Economy Shop is literally a Victorian style house with every room crammed with secondhand goods and antiques. They're only open 3-4 days a month from 9am-3pm, so you need to plan your visit. When you enter, you're handed a paper sheet that is divided into different categories of merchandise. When you go to each room, they total up whatever you want to buy from that given room. When you're completely done shopping, you pay at the far back of the house and exit. Prices are fair and you can find some great stuff here. The basement was one area that was overwhelming. Almost too much to look at and fully absorb. Tips for first time visitors: 1. Bring reusable bags or a tote bag. They will give you bags but a good sturdy bag will work to your advantage. 2. Parking is tricky. You're fine on residential streets but if you park along the train tracks, you have to feed a meter. $2.00 per hour. Card payment only. 3. Leave small kids at home. The rooms and hallways are too packed and tight to reasonably manage kids in tow. I like this place! I will be back!

I even found two that had a different finish on them. He was able to match the finish on the chairs, I can't even tell which were the odd ones! The table and chairs were all taken apart and re-glued, so sturdy now! Just a joy to use! He sent me pictures when the table was stripped to confirm the color of finish I wanted. He completed the job when he said he would.

Incompetent at best, homophobic at worst…read more I walked in looking for seven different books, and they had none of them in stock. I had a gift card; I asked the woman working the register to order four books. I listed out all four books verbally, twice. Three were queer romances they didn't have in stock--two of them being the Gay Hockey Books currently dominating the cultural conversation. Surprise surprise, when I went to pick them up today, they'd ordered the second book in the series, but no the first. Despite the cashier repeating my order back to me and confirming. I walked out with three books, confused. On top of this, their selection is tiny and their poetry section is one sad little table. The "gay" section is shoved all the way in the back in corner like a shameful secret, like it's 2003 or something. The romance section was maybe the largest, and out of that entire section, I found two queer romances (both by Casey McQuiston, NYT Bestseller). Oak Park is an incredibly liberal and incredibly queer suburb of Chicago. Heated Rivalry is one of the biggest shows on TV right now, and it's baffling to me that any bookstore in Oak Park wouldn't have a table display for it. Overall the Book Loft is an underwhelming replacement for the Book Table. RIP
